  • Come underwater and learn to fish a spinnerbait! Look at the bass’ perspective as we compare different baits and trailers under water! The spinnerbait is a staple in bass fishing but many anglers don’t know how to use them effectively. Come below the surface and learn how subtle differences between baits and trailers can be the difference between catching bass and just going fishing.
Spring spinnerbait fishing can be amazing! Some anglers swear they’re the greatest baits ever made, while others insist they can’t get bit with them. How can different anglers have such different experiences? Matt insists the keys are in the subtle differences between baits. Pay close attention as Matt discusses bait size, color, trailer selection, and so much more in this in-depth look at spinnerbait fishing.
Below you’ll find links to the exact baits and trailers discussed in the video. The guys have included their favorite colors and sizes for each, as well as some of the gear they use to throw them. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

This video is a prime example of how experience and knowledge can come together to improve the use of a fishing technique.: I think good fishermen and women are naturally obsessive as well as tenacious. Those qualities, combined with a video like this that "does the homework for you" on a topic such as spinnerbaits (generally), sure cuts to the chase, and gets people of any bass fishing level and competency on the right track quickly, or serves to comfirm their own experience and knowledge.

Awesome video Matt! You can definitely tell when you are extra excited about a particular lure category. I found a Shad spawn by accident in the Pit arm of Shasta a few springs ago and it was lights out. I thought I had a bleeder fish in the afternoon but it turned out, my thumb was bleeding from shredding it on lipping spotted bass all day! I wish I would have thought of trying a spinnerbait but mine came on an 2.5 LC American Shad, hence the flash you mentioned since it was sunny and windy. Thanks again Matt.

I caught my first 3lb+ on a FLW rabbit dog spinnerbait and most of my 6lb+ bass spinner baits in general. The only reasons I give them a nod over senko style worms is because of the ease of use and the ability to attract bass not necessarily in the area you casted in. Thanks for the video.

Good tips and awesome footage here Matt. I wish you guys were around back when I was hanging out in tackle shops trying to con advice out of the old dudes. I feel you on spinner baits. I still love to hate spinner baits. I use to hate them with a passion until one year I decided I was going to learn them. I ended up with boxes and boxes of spinner baits too. Now, I can catch fish on a spinner bait pretty consistently. It's pretty cool, and funny when I can give friends the same spinner bait that I'm catching fish on, and they won't be able to "buy a bite".

Great great video Matt! I love throwing a spinnerbait. You can flat out throw it where you can’t throw other baits. I like you find myself throwing white with double willow silver blades 90% of the time. I prefer NO trailer though. Unless I’m specifically targeting laydowns. Muddy I go chartreuse and white with a silver main blade and gold little blade. That’s it. You did make me go buy a bright orange with orange blades though! 😞. I fish the Potomac River and when it’s muddy, look out boys! Keep up the great work Matt! Your amazing at what you do.

Matt, IMO the YUM Pulse swimbait has a tail kick like the Storm Largo Shad, check them out. They also have ridges on the sides that make them WOBBLE side to side, causing that secondary action that Tim and you discuss so often.
I think you should consider the YUM Pulse swimbaits for your swim jigs and spinnerbaits. They are also inexpensive and have great colors.
The only drawback is the absence of a clamshell container for the YUM Pulse swimbait. Therefore, their tails can come kinked, and they are best purchased in-person.

I think the most important part of adding a swimbait is giving some surface area and book for the bass to vacuum in when they open their mouth. They will strike at the general source of the vibration but they will end up getting suction on the swim bait and therefore suck the hook into their mouth. I have experienced the same increase took a percentage just by adding a chunk of any random plastic onto the hook even if it’s shorter than the skirt and doesn’t really change the overall profile of the bait. So I think it’s more about suction than the visual look of the bait when the bass comes to strike

Ty for this video. I usually fly fish n have caught some on the fly but want more bass especially during the winter months. The lake I fish at year round only caught two bass both at least 6 lb. Was on a spinner. I was standing on the rocks n trying out the spinner just to make sure it was moving right n behold this bass came out of no where n took the bait. Lol

Another great trailer tip is to rig a 3.2 Kietech on a trailer hook all the way up to the eye, almost in the plastic, and put it on a spinner bait. The trailer comes out of the skirt right in the middle. Gives it a better baitfish profile from the side view. The skirt of a spinner bait usually runs higher than the hook and the trailer is hanging out the bottom of the skirt instead of being streamlined.

46 seconds in and the memories he brought back with that opening got this video a immediate like. Crazy how tomorrow I’m going pond fishing and just got some spinners to replace what I lost last year. Until today I forgot I caught my first bass on a gold blade spinner. Those are some of my best memories. Thanks guys for a amazing video. You never disappoint us.

And spinnerbaits are awsome with wind. Its a go too besides lipless. This video helped me categorize how I fish them with the conditions. And yes i need more guidance with a zman spinnerbait. I wanna see how it rides in the water. Ive only caught 3 fish early this year.

I had a hard time catching anything or getting any confidence with a spinnerbait for a long time, despite knowing they are a proven bait, and kind of stopped throwing them for a long time despite having several in my bag all the time, then handed one to my little brother the other day and he caught a 3lber right off the bat, so I threw it the next day I went out and caught a 4lb bass pretty quick. I'm a big chatterbait fan but I think i'll be throwing the spinnerbait more than before now, and definitely putting the knowledge here to good use.

Caught my first spinnerbait bass a couple days ago. A greenfish Firecraw red with gold/slvr blades. Caught a 3lbr. I’m one of those people that can’t seem to catch bass on spinnerbaits. That 3 lber was my first ever bass. Typically, I would tie on a spinnerbait when targeting pike, Muskie as my go to lure. ..... I’m making it a point this year to try and toss the spinner for bass. I bought a bunch of Nichols and greenfish spinner baits in bluegill, white, and shad colors. I’m gonna flip them around like jigs and run them into things.

The original terminator t1 titanium spinner baits are one of my favorite bass and pike lures of all time. Unfortunately Rapala won't make them anymore. I got lucky and found 20 brand new ones online from some tackle store in turkey. Ranging from 1/4 to 3/4 Oz. The 3/4 Oz ones are large like a 1 Oz spinner and handle the abuse from pike and musky all season. I wish they still made them.
