    That bike is, as we say down South, "done all used up".
    Run hard, put away wet, and left for Joe to rebuild.

    4:00 These bikes have an accelerator pump in the carb that squirts a jet of fuel down into the intake when you twist the throttle. They'll normally fire right up when cold if you give it 2 throttle blips, choke it, and the DON"T TOUCH THE THROTTLE ANYMORE! Blipping the throttle like 20 times like that just flooded the bike and ruined any chance of it starting.

      Yeah, then the plug gets all wet and it's just too wet inside there over all. Usually let it stand for a moment or help it evaporate the gas off by taking the plug out for a while.

    51:09 for anyone watching who needs to know, those dished valves are Titanium. Ti valves are "soft" but have a hard coating/plating. When the plating wears through on the valve seat area, they sink into the valve seats quickly and need extremely frequent adjustments.
    Replace them immediately when their clearance gets tight.

    • @YouriCarma
      @YouriCarma Před 2 měsíci +3

      Can they be replaced by steel ones then?

    • @mostlymotorized
      @mostlymotorized Před 2 měsíci +9

      @@YouriCarma yes. But the springs are rated for the weight of the valve. As far as I know they're marked with a colored paint. So you would need the correct springs for heavier steel valves

    Good catch! You’ll have it going in no time.

    A little starting fluid {ether} and pop starting it {pushing and then popping the clutch while in gear} might have gotten it running. And if it was merely stuck rings, getting it running and warmed up would have unstuck them. Something to think about for future attempted starting iterations on unknown ring status.

    2 strokes might be easier to work on but 4 strokes got them in the easy start reliability.

    Hey Joe, I’ve been watching your vids for years now and Ik you can make a rock run if your really tried so I figured I ask you. I got a 1998 300ex (has reverse) with some issues. I cannot get it to spark and I’m absolutely stumped. Timing is correct, new cdi, new stator, new rectifier, new (used) inhibitor box because it’s discontinued, new coil, spark plug, starter, key switch, kill switch and electric start module, and even a whole new wiring harness. I’ve done my best to check everything over, clean grounding surfaces and make sure it’s all good but I got nothing. If you can think of anything let me know. I love watching the vids as you do a very good job. Thanks

    I use the smaller jets same problem the kit came with a 64 starter jet changed that to the 68 that was in and it fired up in about 2 kicks

    I would check compression with cams out and timing. Chain off would give u a Tru compression reading

    Buying older 4 strokes is a risky business as they always have valve and cylinder issues and a proper rebuild always exceeds the value of the bike, especially that model, the cam lobes were in surprisingly good condition but you should replace the valves as mostlymotorized mentioned.

    Your spidey sense for finding problems is extraordinary. I think most would have thought the crank was good and then rebuilt the engine only to have to tear it down again.
