When you did the brakes, you only unbolted the caliper bracket. You needed to remove the pads and clean the pad clips and remove, clean and lube the caliper guide/slide pin. That is what’s going to help the pads back off when you release the brakes.

    • @bennyblanko3
      @bennyblanko3 Před 6 měsíci +5

I've rebuilt the caliper on old bikes that sat, and there was so much green goo inside the caliper. I don't think you need to buy any parts. Just let the fluid push the pistons out, and then clean real good (don't get brake clean on the seals). And, clean the pistons real good. Then, they work like new again (although the lines can get totally stuck up too). But, yeah, first step is cleaning pads, lubing wear spots, and clean and lube the slide/pin. But, I'd take them completely apart, and clean inside real good too.

I like how much of the fork stanchion is below the front axle on this bike. However Joe, the front brake hose is routed wrong at the bottom. It goes around the inside the fork tube to the caliper. Check some on line photos to see how it should look.

    • @EarthSurferUSA

No offense to him, but IMO, he needs to slow down and look at the technicalities of everything the best he can, no matter how simple they may seem, until he knows everything he does is right. I have only seen a hand full of his vids, and this is the 2nd time he missed something simple, (chain under the guide was the 1st I saw).
I actually find that kind of amazing. The guy digs right into transmissions and still misses the simple things. I guess I learned from the outside going in. :)
Yea, before the upside down forks, 12" of fork travel would have that much slider tube under hang under the axle. Made riding rutted corners a bit tricky sometimes. The pros of the day seemed to have little problem though. :)

Yeah, I've seen one fall off when riding either. As long as it's installed correctly and you don't let the clip wear down to a sliver, they stay on. In this case, the clip was missing. 23:40 you can see it's missing, and again at 27:59

Congratulations! For me, you and others inspired me to purchase an Adventure Bike, the one you all think is not, 2023 CB500x. Love it and I’m new at this, outside of ATVs. I laughed at your comment in a previous video about not being intimidated by those professionals on some videos and that most guys were middle aged graying beards and chubby lol. Me on the dot. The content I love is the camping, exploration from the riders POV and seeing other bikes go through the terrain. So keep blending those clips and enjoy the rides for us who don’t have cool places to ride. Far East cost here, so not much around without hours of travel. I know, sucks! Ha.

An untrained garage wonder acquaintance of mine bought a dilapidated Mustang and totally disassembled it. He threw every last fastener into a large bucket. All of them. He ended up with half a bucket of mixed, rusty, greasy unidentified fasteners. The car sat in the back yard in the weather and eventually was thrown away one piece at a time. He held on to the engine last saying, "I'm gonna rebuild it." to the very end. He never did.

The bike's "complete" without many fasteners.🤔 So is it "complete"?🤷🏽‍♂
A lot of the existing fasteners are random pieces of hardware off of his lawnmower!🙄
Ten minutes of ride time, with decades of filth.
"Why would he run a brand new top end without any coolant?" Well just look at the bike. Did he ever do anything correct?
When a hammer is needed to remove the caliper, then by all means, rebuild the brake calipers! The assisstance of a screwdriver does not constitute a proper "fix/repair"!
Top end is fresh indeed.👍🏼 Hope you can save this one, Joe.👊🏼

Fortunately this bike was a very good deal , I hope some day you restore one of the two strokes you have I wonder how would you approach a restoration project , thank for posting your videos

There's a good market for older mechanically sound beat up cosmetically bikes. Actually they are the most fun to ride and use because everything mechanical is rebuilt or new so it won't break down and leave you setting. It's not perfect so you can ride it hard without worrying about scratching or crashing it. You can use it for a backup or spare bike to loan family and friends to have something to ride at get togethers. My cousins and I grew up riding 2-stroke motocross dirt bikes in the 1970's and 1980's. When I go over to his house for family dinners and reunions he has a barn full of about 20 bikes like this. We all jump on one and go around the farm to rip them. Several of us are highly experienced riders and are very good at it. Some of my other cousins and their grand-kids and kids aren't. It's nice to put them on something that runs good, yet if they lay it down it's not a huge issue.

Had a 1976 RM 125 I got from my Buddy and went through and restored it. That thing was really Pipey and would pull the front wheel without even trying. Saw a fully restored one go on Bring a Trailer this year for $8600!

There's a good market for older mechanically sound cosmetically beat up bikes.

Don’t be afraid to try and fix one of those Can-am ATV’s. I’ve seen many 800s go for $1000- $1800 that only need a carb clean and few other odds and ends.
