    I hate sharpening my chisels and hand plane blades. This jig made it a bit more manageable and less time consuming.

    Quite a common occurrence on Banggood unfortunately. They often split sets up and then the price goes way up compared to what you thought it was originally.

    I notice that as well, and i couldn't justify basically buying the set for more than £50. I got the trend honing system for £35 on amazon prime day.

    I’ve got one these and it’s a really good system. I bought a second honing guide so one is permanently set up for sharpening plane blades with wheels inside and the other is set up for chisels. Personally I only sharpen to 1000 grit then polish on the strop but I sharpen fairly regularly to be honest. Regular sharpening for a couple of seconds works better than irregular but spending 5 minutes sharpening stuff

      Yes thats what I started to do now as well. Rather than spending half a day on sharpening everything once in a blue moon I do it on regular basis now. Its just easier and quicker for me to do now.

    I think splitting the set is actually somewhat justified for these products. I've got both, and while I definitely appreciate the angle fixture gauge, I found that 80% of the value is in the honing guide. Using a flat reference plate, you can set the chisel in the honing guide and match the current angle to within 2°. With basic trigonometry (or eyeballing) you can work out the distance the chisel needs to extend from the jig for resharpening at other angles.

    Just to let you know the rollers are available from banggood for 9.99 for 2pcs. I also have the same set and would agree it is very well made, also the advertising can be a bit misleading if you’re not aware. Ps. Love what you do, been following your channel for around 5 years keep up the good work and best wishes for the season to yourself and family.

      Just get some cheap 635 2rs bearings and replace the rollers with some thin washers in between. Much nicer feel and cheap to replace. Hard steel and last 10 times longer at least.

    Very helpful video - thanks. I bought the two units recently and they arrived today - no instructions included so your video was super-useful! Like yours, mine arrived in two separate boxes, but I notice that the larger box also has a moulded foam section which the honing guide fits into perfectly, so I'm guessing that maybe originally they did sell the two items as a single purchase - strange waste of packaging!

      Glad that my video was some help. Maybe they wanted to earn extra money by making separate products...

    A lot of listings are like this one, all they had to do was add a third picture with both parts and the appropriate price, that would have been far clearer!! Another nice piece of kit, made from nice and chunky pieces of aluminium 👍
    I also hate sharpening and think I've only done it once or twice in my life ... hopefully that'll change when I make my water based sharpening system using diamond lapidary wheels (but don't hold you breath) 😁

      Exactly, shame they make it unclear at first glance, especially when this is actually a very good jig.

    It’s a great honing guide, bought on3 myself after seeing it recommended on hooked on wood. Beautifully made. The brass wheels are now available as a separate spare part; I bought a set as well

    I like this sharpener apart from 1 thing. The brass wheels rub directy on the bolt and start to get sloppy after a while. I think this was done intentionally so that you have to keep buying the spare wheels. I replaced my brass wheels with some 635 2rs bearings with small 5mm thin washers to space the bearing to the same size as the brass wheels. They are exactly the same size as the brass wheels and the bolts are a nice tight fit so that the bearing sits properly and clamps up so that only the outer bearing rubs on the stone. If you think you had a smooth sharpener before, you should get ready for a whole new feel. It should have been made like this to start with, the bearings will last many times longer, and the bolts never get worn out.

    • @robinguysharman
      @robinguysharman Před 3 měsíci

      I like your idea of replacing the brass rollers with 635 2RS roller bearings. Did you put one or two roller bearings on each side?

    • @paullisi1137
      @paullisi1137 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@robinguysharman I put 2 bearing on each side with a small washer as a spacer between them. There were 2 fitted nearest the body of the sharpener. so inside out, 2 washer, bearing washer, bearing and washer. Comes to the same width as the original and the bearings clamp up so that the middle doesn't rotate on the bolt. Only the outer of the bearing spins and only that bit gets worn. Ther're hardened steel, so will last ages and are cheap to replace. The action is so much nicer.
      I also have a veritas mk2 and am trying to find some bearing to replace that roller. Odd size, but I'm looking.

      Keen to buy one as well, but the brass wheels sound like as if they are not the propper material to use on stones (wet or diamond).
      Was thinking to look for something the 'richard kell no.2' honing guide uses.
      Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene roller (UHMWPE).
      Durable and stone friendly.
      Just need to search if there are stock size rollers that found fit this guide.

    The stones should be in water for at least 30 minutes before you sed them. The grade of those stones are not exactly reliable but still, before the strop they can do a good job.

    • @CasualDIY
      @CasualDIY  Před 5 měsíci

      As I said I'm not a pro at this, as long as they sharp my chisels to a reasonable level then I'm good

      It's a figure of speech. By Bangood tools I meant that you can buy them there, and it clearly indicates where the tools were made.
      And yes you can get some gems for good money but there's also a lot of products that should be avoided.
