Lead singer & guitar is Mark Knopfler. Here's a quick quote about the songs origins - "Mark had written it in 1977, after ducking into a deserted pub one rainy night and witnessing a lousy jazz band. Undeterred by the lack of both talent and punters, their lead singer finished the set with a mildly enthusiastic, “Goodnight and thank you. We are the Sultans Of Swing.”
I'm so glad you pointed out that the drummer, Terry Williams, was killing it! You're really doing a great job recognizing work when you see it.
If you like them & wanna see more, try "Money For Nothing". It has the famous lyrics in the beginning "I want my MTV".

Sultans Of Swing was on their debut album and was their first hit. Private Investigations and Telegraph Road, which others have mentioned, were both on their 4th album, Love Over Gold. But it was their 5th album, Brothers In Arms that turned them into global stars. Songs off that album like the title track, Money For Nothing, So Far Away (all singles) Ride Across The River, Why Worry? are just great songs. Not as uplifting perhaps as this track right here but they were also downtempo a lot of the time.

Hi, the very first time I heard this song was in 1978 when it was released. Summer holidays from high school, sunbathing in the garden with the radio on. The intro, wow. Two weeks later I bought their first album. This song Sultans of Swing was their first single off that first album. I was there that night as a 17 year old, it was the fourth time that I saw Dire Straits play live and it was a sublime performance. They started off as a four piece band. Drums, bass guitar, rythmn guitar and Mark´s lead guitar. The original drummer Pick Withers was a fine drummer, which is one of the reasons that listening to the studio recorded albums is so different to the later live recordings. Terry Williams, the drummer in the video, joined the band prior to this tour, so it was all new to him. He did take the band´s sound to another level. The keyboard player Alan Clark was also a great addition which added such a depth to their sound but that lead guitar of Mark´s just got better and better as his mastery and confidence grew. He was brimming over with confidence here. He was a newspaper reporter first up and then an English teacher. He twiddled about with the guitar in his spare time but felt that he had to give up the steady jobs and go for the music. I was there in 2019 in my seat to see his farewell tour after forty years of solid gold music. My musical youth was in the late 70´s and into the 80´s, everyone was a song writer or musician then. But we were blending in the UK our guys and girls in music. We had the fabulous Jamaican ska/rock steady and then reggae beats that came to the UK and then British reggae was born. Young pale skins and brown skins, it was our music, we were such an integrated youth. We crossed all the musical barriers. Skin colour was an invitation not an exclusion. I wonder if it is the idea that there is white music and black music. For me there are just great singers, musicians and performers. I am a British pale skin, on my music shelf... Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, I Jah Man, Gregory Isaccs, Jimmy Hendrix, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations etc. All beautiful brown skinned guys with loads of talent. White guys who didn´t have a profession tried their hand at music. We just didn´t stop. But Dire Straits stood out so much in their early days as we were right in the thick of the punk rock era. That was maybe our white equivalent of rap music. Not in the style but more the lyrics and the messages coming through. The late 70´s were grim times for us youths and unemployment was dramatic. No hope for any of us, there still isn´t! Hence I still belt out my punk rock anthems because they stand today just as they did back then. Because nothing has changed as yet!!!! I really enjoyed watching your face as you were getting drawn into Mark´s magic, I was in suicidal mode this morning and I have distracted myself with you. I would suggest that you listen to the whole Alchemy Live album. When Dire Straits played live, their songs were always given a different touch, it´s like they were new every time we heard them played live. All bands have some big songs and Sultans is one of Dire Straits big songs, it was their first. It has become their calling card! They wrote some long songs and I love long songs, songs that you can really get into. On the same album you will find TUNNEL OF LOVE and TELEGRAPH ROAD, two absolute classics. May I suggest that you read the lyrics first and so know what the song is about, you will then see how the music carries the story along. But if you have got one hour and forty-five minutes alone and undisturbed, listen to Alchemy live. If you haven´t got the visuals, no problem. But then I have the visuals stored in my memory. Thankyou for cheering me up today.

Dire Straits are a phenomenon in their own right; as for Mark Knopfler, one of the great guys of music; fantastic song writer and guitarist. Brothers in Arms was a monster album in the same way Rumours was for Fleetwood Mac. It took the world by storm. Every song on that album is fire. They have so many hits. I bet you go to any shopping mall you hear dire straits and think 'where do I know this from? One thing I would say is that late 30s, 40s is the best age to fully appreciate their music and words.

If your looking for another amazing live performance to check out, you can't miss with Portishead live at Roseland NY, they along with Massive Attack were far and away the stars and faces of the Trip Hop genre of the 90's. The entire concert is phenomenal but 2 not to miss highlights are the tracks "Roads" and "Glory Box"!!!

Mark Knopler is considered to be one of the 10 greatest guitar players in rock history. and he doesn't use a pick just his fingers great great reaction to what many rockers consider to be one of the best live concerts ever recorded. i like the way you groove to great rock and roll

Honestly, the best way, in my opine, to fully enjoy 'Dire Straits' COMPLETELY; drive on your favorite scenic drive (45-60min.), mellow, melancholy, whatever evokes chill/thought; then, put on 'Brothers in Arms', skip the first 3 tracks, then push play. ENJOY. Upon your return...(if you've already listened to their other stuff) you now understand 'Dire Straits'. You're welcome.
