The drummer's parents were in the audience for the 1st time to watch their son live, and boy he gave it everything.
Wow! That is amazing.
Urban myth I'm afraid though I'd love it to be true
Not true.
They were there, but it was not their first time hearing him play live.
Wow !! He really did. he was having a blast up there...they all were !!!!!
@@SaeedReacts. Williams was part of the best Line up for Dire Straits
Often not appreciated is Knopfler's ability to tell a story. All his songs tell an amazing story. His artistry as a guitarist is undisputed but his talent as a poet is not often recognised. Great ballads like Telegraph Road, Brothers In Arms, Sailing To Philadelphia, Romeo & Juliet and even Money For Nothing illustrate Knopfler's powers of observation, and a capacity to put this into a magnificent package of notes and words. Listen closely to the lyrics - and if possible, read them from a lyrics score. This will add a new dimension to your appreciation of his great talent.
Love storytelling and huge affinity for lyrics, so definitely will pay close attention. Thanks for the recommendations!
Oh I agree. In past 4months I've mentioned a time or two M.K. artistry as a poet and storyteller. You elaborated beautifully. And you are the first I've seen(hundreds of reviews and comments)to mention Sailing to Philadelphia,my favorite song and album. But it's almost like no one else ever of it. I saw MK in an interview recently. I was so shocked til I realized it's been about 50 years! I'm an old lady and he is an old man. What a splendid old man! Three piece suit, kind face and cultured manners. No sign of excessive living. He conversed so easily, not one awkward moment in a very long interview and was quite funny. I guess I am still a fan. The reason for the interview was an event at Sotheby's where he auctioned off part of his guitar collection and gave 11 million $ to charity. GOD bless you Mr.Knopfler.
For my money Dire straits are my favourite live band, just truly brilliant every time.
What I cannot believe is that it has been 40 years and I am still emotionally stunned by this performance, especially when Mark goes into the slow solo after the breakdown. He is literally pulling my heart strings each and every time.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Dear friend, the drummer´s dad was in the audience, watching his son for the first time. The drummer was energised and played it a bit too fast, but the rest of the band was ok with it. They found it hillarious.
Be safe at home.
Elmar from Germany
Thanks for letting me know! Greetings from Belgium.
First heard this song in 1978 and instantly became a fan of the group. Incredible talent on that stage.
🎼🎼🎼❤️🔥❤️🔥 .. this is the bomb Saeed. This ranks very high for me , in best Rock songs of all time. Mark Knopfler has a seat at the table with the best guitarists ever. . The Jimi Hendrix , the Eric Clapton , the Stevie Ray Vaughan , the Jimmy Page , the Roy Clark , the David Gilmour table .. this is a superior song on many levels.. love it ❤️🔥❤️🔥🎼🎼🎼
Epic track!
Mark Knopfler is one of the best rock guitarists of our time. This song is way up there on the list of best rock songs of all time.
Remember Albert Lee? Still reckon Clapton didn't like being upstaged..
@@rickybuhl3176 they're all good. We all have our favourites!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
Definitely energizing to see them perform their craft. Thanks for watching.
Telegraph Road is in this same concert that lasted for 2 hours. I like it even better than this. It is a masterpiece!
Mark Knopfler the composer of music for the movie "Local Hero" (1983 soundtrack) as well has being one of the best finger-style rock guitarists ever.
Mark Knopfler is actually left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players. He's self taught and plucks the strings with the tips of his fingers. My GOAT for sure.
Awesome!
Anything from Alchemy is 🔥.
Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love are musts, live of course. Enjoyed the reaction. Subscribed. 😊
Thank you for subscribing and the recommendations.
I've been loving this song for the past 40 plus years, and it never gets old in fact the older I get the more I appreciate their amazing talents.
I liked how you discussed how in shape they have to be and the stamina they have to have to perform. I would love to see you check out the talking heads live performance of life in wartime. It will blow your mind.
Amazing performance. Will add your suggestion to my list. Thanks.
Aaah! The 80s. My late 20s and early 30s. It really was fun! And Dire Straits were right up there.
The studio version of "Sultans of Swing" was Dire Straits first single from their first album in 1978 and was a hit. This 1983 "Alchemy Live" take is a longer version and with mostly different personnel than the original band. They had just ended a tour so the band was really tight and they did two concerts in London that were recorded and released the next year on an "Alchemy Live" album. The concert video was released a few years later.
Thanks for this info!
The whole album 🤯
Mark Knopfler is my number one guitarist of all time. Absolute legend! You need to check out "Telegraph Road" from the same concert, it's a work of art. And then "Private Investigations", but the version from their concert in Nimes, France in 1992. It was that concert that they made their "On The Night" dvd - that concert is my number one destination when I finally get my hands on a time machine. 😂
Save me a seat on that time machine 😁
@@SaeedReacts. only if you bring snacks
The song was written in 1977 and released in 1978. This performance was in 1983, so they had some experience playing it concert. Mark Knopfler's still working. He's 74 years old and released a new album in April 2024. It debuted at #3 on the British album charts, right behind Beyonce.
Thanks for letting me know! Awesome he is still going strong.
My Dad was/is a big fan and I love their music, Mark is a guitar genius 🤩❤️👍🏻
Amazing track. Looking forward to more.
Sultans of swing 1978.
♥♥♥♥♥ Cool that you got to see this 🙂 Mark Knopfler is easily one of the best guitarists in the world, and he's still going strong. Love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
So good! Thanks for watching. Love from Belgium.
One of the most epic live performances ….
Nice reaction man check for talegraph road
Thanks! Will add that one to my list.
its mastership and flow combined
Terry the drummer is amazing !
If you have seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, the finale of this is being played off camera as Queen are preparing to go on Stage for Live Aid.
Right!
Wrong. The Queen concert depicted is Wembley 1985. This video is from Hammersmith in 1983. Alchemy Live tour.
Another song from this amazing concert is Telegraph Road. It was written when Dire Straits was traveling from one concert venue to another along Telegraph Road (US Highway #24) in Michigan. Telegraph Road runs north and south 70 miles right along the Detroit border.
Mark had a conversation with the bus driver about the history of Detroit and then he wrote this song. It is basically the story of Detroit but could easily be adapted to any large city that was once prosperous but has now fallen into blight and decay.

Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing that backstory. Definitely want to hear that one.
@6.34 knopfler just hypnotizing the crowd
Saeed, my 13 year old grandson is a drummer. He started at the age of 4. His drum instructor would just jam with him for like 10 mins. of his lessons. Afterwards, Kyler would say to him, "man, my forearms are killing me"! He told him that practicing every single day will help to build up that stamina and strength in his arms and legs. It's a vicious workout to be a drummer. Neal Peart and Tommy Lee are my favorite drummers.
THIS performance was out of this 🌍! That drummer was amazing!! 🌍🥁🎶🎸
That is amazing he started at 4. He will go places! Thanks for sharing that. Have a wonderful day.
The music at the end was once described perfectly. Like walking through the gates of heaven.
Beautiful description.
Aged 15, i loved this so much that i bought the record back in 1979. First album i ever bought. You never forget.
Also seen them twice in concert.
That is so true. Never forget going to the store and getting that first album ❤️
I have never heard another guitarist play as cleanly as Mark. Uses his fingers (no pick) with no distortion as his fingers move up and dowm on the strings.
I saw DS on this tour (Alchemy Live) as a 19 year old kid. My mates and I came out drained, and drenched with sweat from the pure electricity they were putting out. In the pocket ALL NIGHT. 😮💨🤘🏼✌🏼
The drummer is amazing to!!!
I don’t think that anyone pointed this out, but Mark Knopfler doesn’t use a pick, which is rather unusual except for bass players. He is definitely one of the all time great guitarists. There’s a live version of him playing I Want My MTV, in a tribute concert for Monserrat, he’s much older but it’s outstanding. He wrote that after hearing some employees in an appliance store who had a demo TV turned to MTV. What makes that performance remarkable is his guests, Phil Collins on drums, Sting singing backing vocals and Eric Clapton on rhythm guitar. It’s definitely worth watching.
Money For Nothing is the song. I want my MTV is a lyric in that song.
I did not know that yet. Thanks for sharing!
Terry Williams is killing it! This is the best live performance I have ever watched. Thank goodness it was recorded.
So glad this was recorded!
This is70’s not 80’s. This was their debut. I love Mark knofler - 4o years later he is till making great music❤❤❤❤
Not he best band but guitar wise they have got he GOAT for sure. Remember Prince was asked what does it feel like to be the greatest guitar player of all time? his answer was You better ask Mark knopfler.
What do you mean not the the best band they had some of the best musicians ever so you haven't a clue sorry but you don't know what your talking about
A similar urban legend to the time a reporter asked Angus Young from AC/DC what it is like being one of the best guitarists in the world. Angus in this urban legend replied with 'I wouldn't know, I'm not even the best guitarist in the band'. He then apparently mentioned that Malcolm could play all of his parts, but he couldn't play everything that Malcolm could. Although one thing isn't an urban legend to me, I still think Malcom Young was one of the best rhythm guitarists of all time.
This is in the 80s... but it's NOT typical 80s music. It's a lot closer to (some) typical sounds of the 60s and early 70s.
What a GREAT reaction to one of the best live performances in history! WTG! 😀
Thanks! Appreciate that. Epic performance!
That banjo playing tennis guy rocks
Hi Saeed,
I was there, I was at Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983, I was just turned 18. It was amazing,
It was my second ever gig (The first was The Rolling Stones at Wembley) and I thought this was normal!
Its not normal, they are all on top of their game, the best.
I knew they were good, but they were way above my expectations.
Terry Williams on the drums was the star for me, absolutely up there with the best you can see live.
There is a story that his father was there for the first time and that made him play harder, its more of an urban myth, he always played like that!
The concert lasted about two hours and you need to watch Telegraph Road, its the encore and they didn't let up for a second.
Amazing times and memories, its great that it was the best recording of the time and we can watch it and enjoy it
No way! That is awesome. Thank you for sharing this. Will check out Telegraph Road. Have a great weekend.
Brothers in Arms is a song you must hear and listen to the lyrics closely. Beautiful, heart wrenching and his solos are too.
Definitely want to check that one out too. I have a reaction to Tunnel Of Love coming later today.
Mark did the music for the show, Hero’s.
j'avais 20 ans j'étais jeune j'avais un moto c'était l'époque où il y avait de bon et de vrai musiciens et les voir sur scène en France quelle chance c'était le "pieds"
I was 20 years old I was young I had a motorbike it was the time when there were good and real musicians and to see them on stage in France what luck it was the "feet"
1st time watching this video - there are different version. But this one was the best by far!!!!
Thank you for the memories and thank you Dire Strait for an awesome performance.!!!!
Thanks so much for watching. Epic performance!
I thought I was the only one who remembered Columbo. So cool. Great reaction, subbed
R.i.p. Peter Falk. Legend! Thanks for subscribing 🙏🏽❤️
They were and all top performers. You dont see that much anymore.
Great reaction. I reckon you will have heard this somewhere in your life, I'm sure. Every decent radio station (and supermarket) plays this week in, week out. Great to watch.
Must have. Sounded so familiar. Love it!
The drummer, Terry Williams, is in a 30 min CZcams video "I'm just the drummer" or similar and it is really good....well worth the watch! I just love this live version of Sultans - great guys the entire bunch of them! Love MK and follow his solo career too! Great talent....
Telegraph Road from the same concert is phenomenal 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
This song came from when Mark went into a small bar to get out of the rain in London. There was a local band playing that were mediocre at best. When they signed off on their set, the vocalist said We Are The Sultan's Of Swing. The rest is history 🤘🏻🤘🏻
"He's done a Columbo on us" 😂😂😂😂😂
Just one more thing 😁
@@SaeedReacts. 😂😂Iconic
Was that EPIC, or what!! I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits once, in Orange County California, and Sting came out and sang with'em.
Glad you caught this performance. 👊🎶
Incredible! Awesome you saw them live.
His guitar playing is just fabulous!
You said it.
Oh yeah, I go way back with this band, still on my playlist as well as "🎸Telegraph Road🎸" which is also on CZcams same venue.👀 I would really enjoy your reaction to that song as well if you could.🙏
That one is on my todo list! Thanks for watching.
@@SaeedReacts. Mark changes up his guitar uses a resonator love the sound looking forward to your reaction when you hear it!
You don't this .... but you know 'Columbo'? Lol nice job! In my top 5 all time fav live performances, they looked like they were having a ball
Been a fan of cinema and tv since i was 6 years old, so my knowledge of that is quite a bit better. 😀 Now i hope to learn more about all kinds of genres of music. Truly a joy to discover these epic performances. Glad they were recorded. Thanks for watching.
Good job, you recognize the drums, so fuckin good, guitar and drums on this live video is so eriplacable, sooooooiiiiii good 😊 , good reaction 😊
Incredible performance! Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
My parents raised me on this kind of music! The whole Brothers in Arms album is amazing! Your Latest Trick is one of my favorite songs! And I actually prefer the studio version over the live version of Sultains of Swing!
Definitely must check out more. I listened to Telegraph Road and really enjoyed it.
Big Time! ❤
Pick rocked it. Wow!!!
You need to listen to Telegraph Road from the same tour
I think that will be the next one i check out. Thanks.
You should also hear the original album version which is great but it will show how much more they put into this live performance
Will have a listen
This is legendary, epic
So I am kind of happy you got this one on your list. On of my favourite ❤your reaction is crazy cool 😎 thanks man ❤they started in the late 70😊
One of those well known classics that i never took the time to actually listen to and pay attention. So glad i did. Amazing. Thanks for watching!
Don't be ashamed. There's so much really good music from the 50s, 60s and 70s to listen to - and enjoy
Looking forward to discover much more. Thank you for these words, appreciate it.
Yeees, Dire Straits. Legends ❤ Mark Knopfler is amazing. In my twenties I used to be up until midnight just to hear his Going home at the beginning of night program of my favourite radio station 😂
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that. There was no instant music streaming. Special moments!
Love the "Columbo" reference! :)
Just one more thing :)
Song came out in 1976. This performance is from 1978.
Thanks for letting me know 🙏🏽❤️
world class
He did a song for a movie, The Princess Bride.
This performance made me love a song I already just liked. My favorites of his are Romeo and Juliet, and Skateaway.
Classic movie!
Check out telegraph road and tunnel of love live
Mark did movie soundtracks Princess Bride which won Best Movie that year. As for story telling you should check into the songs he recorded after as a sosl artist
Definitely want to check that out. I know the movie, but need to listen to the music. I believe he also did something for Color of Money.
Of i can suggest : phil collins .’in the air tonight.’ Live in Paris. Also,a less known Artist: Paola nutini’ Iron sky (Abbey road studio version) . For me one of the best songs ever!
I know those songs, but havent seen or heard those specific versions. Definitely want to check them out at some point. Thanks.
Great reaction 👌
Thank you!
I’m the same age as Mark 74. I’ve seen them twice back in the day. Next up.. Telegraph Road. ?Tunnel of Love. ? Brothers in Arms. ?
Awesome you saw them live. Definitely want to check out Telegraph Road.
😳😳😳😳 are YOU in for a shock lad..😂 the WHOLE concert is amazing..👍☺️
Will check out more from this concert.
@@SaeedReacts. There's so much out there for you from the 60s 70s and 80s British Prog rock bands... Pink Floyd, Genesis, E.L.O. Supertramp, Queen...and quite a few others ☺️👍
I just realized the last sound is exactly the same as the last sound of Interstellar's theme by Zimmer.
I need a side by side 😀. Will listen to both endings.
Really appreciate your reactions
Thank you! Grateful that you are here.
Listen to the original. You'll see why it's easy to love them both. This is one live version that did homage to the original without screwing it up. 😊
Will do!
Now we have Rap and Hip Hop, My guitar gently weeps.
There are great things to be found in all genres in my opinion.
From 1977 or 78. Say: Mark no-fleur.... k is silent. He's one of the world's best guitarist. Writes all his iwn music. MARK went solo in mid-90s(?+/-).
Thanks for the pronounciation! Wish i read this comment before i recorded my reaction to Tunnel Of Love 😅
Héllo de France Bonsoir regarder le live Télégraph Road super 😊
You were really close with the timing - released late 70's
I think you're right. Columbo came out in 1971, Dire Straits came out in 1977.
Iconic show. Epic song!
Watch Telegraph Road (Live) by Dire Straits it will 'BLOW' your mind!
Will check it out!
@@SaeedReacts. you have too!
Damn…a Columbo reference? You really were raised on TV. Here’s a crazy little connection to that for you… Columbo was played by the same guy who played Fred Savage’s Grandpa in the movie “The Princess Bride”…and you will never guess who did the music score for that movie…
None other than our beloved lead singer and guitarist of this very band, Dire Straits own Mark Knopfler!!!
R.I.P Peter Falk. Classic show and movie as well. Now i need to rewatch it!
A LOT of the great music from mid sixties thru 80's was indeed recorded you just gotta look for it - talk to some of us old guys
and we'll steer ya to some legends
Awesome! Thanks so much. Definitely enjoying this journey. All recommendations are welcome.
It took me until a friendly English teacher corrected me at 14, to not call "To Kill A Mockingbird" - 'Tequila Mockingbird' because I'd only heard it in an Essex/cockney accent. Still haven't seen the whole film and I'm 42..
😅. I read the book. Tequila Mockingbird would have been more fun i think.
You should watch it...one of the best movies ever made. You'll be glad you did...promise. :-)
I wish I had a 1961 Fender Stratocaster....
Probably pricey?
@@SaeedReacts. well his refinished and has swapped the neck so in reality probably around $20,000 depending on the neck and who refished it.... but an all original would be closer to $30,000-$40,000...
His 1958 Gibson Les Paul cherry sunburst IS all original and is the guitar he plays in Money For Nothing.... The cheapest one I've ever seen get sold had a poorly done headstock repair, and it still cost about $400,000...
You wanna go down that rabbit hole with DS? You will love it. See Dagmar's suggestions. They have NOT ONE BAD SONG. I suggest taking one th other two more epic ones in Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love and then move on to a slower and different style in Private Investigations, Romeo and Juliet, and so many others. Best venues: Alchemy Tour, Wembley 1985, Sydney 1986.
Definitely want to hear more. Telegraph Road reaction coming tomorrow! Have a great day.
@@SaeedReacts. OK, you too. And consider me signed up;)
Apart from recommending you to listen to Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, I have another request of a song that gives mayor goosebumps: Chakra Khan singing Skyscraper as well as his cover of Monsters.
Will add these to my list. Hope to get to it at some point. Thanks.
MARK KNOPFLER pronounced (NOP-FLUR) is a finger picker, he does not use a plectrum at all.
Thanks for sharing that info. Appreciate it.

Thank you!
Just FYI Mark is left handed and doesn’t use a pick he is definitely gifted.
Thanks for letting me know.

Great Reaction. Listen also to Heart Barracuda
and Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven. Album (studio) version
Thanks! Definitely want to check out Led Zeppelin as well.
These guys were all in high school when this concert took place. Their Mums had to excuse them from class that day. The sax player is missing because he didn't do his homework.
😂
Seriously, what do you do in life that you never heard this song? I find that so hard to believe…
If you watched the video then you would know i did recognize it. There are many things like songs in life we hear, but not pay attention. This is one of instances for me.
lead guitar is not using a pick
I've watched a lot of live performances, a perk that comes with being an old man. I love Dire Straits, been a fan for ages, it seems. I put this one as a solid #3 on my all-time greatest performances list, and that's saying a lot. My #2 is Pink Floyd's Alchemy Live performance of "COMFORTABLY NUMB" czcams.com/video/7kWl-ZGMwkQ/video.html. #1 is Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart doing their cover of "I'D RATHER GO BLIND" czcams.com/video/UEHwO_UEp7A/video.html from their Live in Amsterdam concert. Check them out, sometime. Both performances are to be experienced in this lifetime.
Definitely want to check out these. All iconic names that i know by name , but not familiar with most of their music. Thank you.
