I'm happy because the new generations are starting to find out what real music is about.
💯 agree
Take that attitude elsewhere, dude. You should know better by now...
@@sandercohen5543 Truth hurts. Today's music is RUBBISH.
Absolutely thank goodness we have music like this, real class. I saw them they are awesome live like this.
Same concert, Telegraph Road.
One of the greatest live performances of all time!
maybe the greatest!
@@normankennith7919 Best guitarist in the last 40 years after clapton imo.
@@christaylor4441 both eric & mark cite other guitarists as better than them but maybe they are both just being modest!!
one can point to terry kath of chicago, joe walsh, the eagles & pink floyd's dave gilmour! they can all be seen on you tube, so why not enjoy their performances instead of comparing them!!
the twang's the thang!!!
This is one of the best live performances of a song in all of rock music.
there are some brilliant tracks on you tube apart from this brilliant offering by dire straits, all of them live & they include, the eagles, 'hotel california, 1977, chicago's, '25 or 6 to 4', 1970 & pink floyd's 'comfortably numb', 1990's!!!
Gotta be that guy am afraid, but the studio version on Sultans of Swing, is, in my humble opinion, far better. Wanna hear great rock played live, can't go much further than The Band or Little Feat IMO
it's no mean little feat to outshine dire straits!!!@@MichaelDoherty1981
@@MichaelDoherty1981 You're so damn right! I feel so exhausted reading all those comments about this or that being the GOAT, all comments obviously made by persons having little to none musical culture, who seem to discover the wheel with every old performance. It's good to remind them about the fact that real music isn't something new and no, the world doesn't revolve around Comfortably numb or Bohemian rhapsody. Feels so down to Earth to see somebody mentioning The Band and Little feat ; THX to you!🙏
@@Onlygloo i love studio versions! It's the songs we hear first, But this imo all the stars in the sky aligning all at once. Beautiful performance. Not a note wrong.
One of the world’s best guitarists.
i agree, clapton is no1 for me personally
@@christaylor4441Clapton ?!! My a** = overrated as f**k.
Terry Williams, One of the worlds greatest drummers.
The stars aligned perfectly that day.
indeed! they were on the stage!!!
Every single time I listen to this performance, I feel like I'm about to levitate, It is 'eargasmic' !
Thank goodness they captured this performance for posterity. Because they did, you just got to witness one of the greatest live performances ever!
Indeed
Absolutely modern rock cant hold a candle to these
Same concert...Telegraph Road...a true masterpiece. Then also the studio version of Brothers In Arms...sure to get your eyes all wet.
Brothers in Arms voir le live de 1993 super 😊
"Telegraph Road" from this Alchemy tour is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Around this time in the mid-80s Dire Straits were the biggest-selling band in the world.
I still listen to their albums. They worked very hard at their game. Class.
The drummer´s dad was in the audience to see his son, for the first time in his life. The drummer was energized and played a bit enthusiastic. Thats why the guitarists grinned. Mr. Knopfler asked him if he (the drummer) was ok, and he nodded to Mr. Knopfler.
Mark also go ahead and show off a little. Said we’ll keep up.
Nonsense! Did his Dad, who bought him his first kit at
13 years old also bring Billy the Budgie and Hammy Hamster.
They must be missing him too.
@@kellahella5286 No he didn't. They play the same every concert.
They don't change it just because you think it would be cool if they did.
@@bjsw1949 well thank you for so succinctly dispelling the rumor going around it, apparently.
I got a bit emotional when hearing that about his parents feel free to laugh but music like this is just unbeatable
I’m a guitarist of 30 years, and Mark is one of my top 5 greatest influences. In fact, the older and more skilled I’ve grown. the closer he gets to being No. 1. Mark is a master of melody. He never plays fast to simply play fast; every riff is so melodic. This performance has about 15 different melodic ‘hooks’ on the lead guitar alone.
Every reactor on CZcams reacts to this song. I understand why: *Alchemy* is one of the best concert films in existence. However, as I’m just a guitarist, i like to see Dire Straits when they were just (the greatest) four-piece pub-rock band. No synthesisers, no sax players…no 12-piece drums kits. My favourite performance by Dire Straits can be found if you search CZcams for ‘Dire Straits Rockpalast 1979’.
Best songs: ‘Lady Writer’, ‘Single-Handed Sailor’, ‘Down To the Waterline’ (one of my favourite make-out tunes, when I was an adolescent, 25+ years ago), ‘News’, and ‘Once Upon A Time In the West’. This is a much more intimate show, and the band are still young and hungry-not quite superstars, yet.
This blows my mind every time I watch it.
It is not often that any musician could upstage the magical Mark Knopfler, but the insane drummer Terry Williams came pretty damn close. Wonderful music.
As a drummer , the Strength & Stamina it takes to play THAT way for some 10 or so minutes , just WOW !!
@@user-bh5jv8hi3b he was wild. I would of keeled over i rekon.
I wish that today's drummers could represent like that.
Check out Telegraph Road from the same concert. It is an amazing journey 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑🤑🤑
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
Brothers in Arms. Telegraph Road. Walk of Life. I could go on and on. Great reaction!! 🙂🙂
One of the best performances of any rock band ever. It's an incredible performance!!!
Mark Knopfler has said that the song is about stopping into a bar in London and seeing a pretty bad band playing to a virtually empty bar but seeing that the guys were into it despite their lack of talent and some stuff being said in the crowd. Knopfler said the singer closed the show by saying, "Thank you. We're the Sultans of Swing."
Hey that was my PRETTY BAD BAND playing in that honky tonk. And if i had know what Knopfler was going to do to MY SONG I never would have let him in the bar!
Harrumpffff!
Just from the originality of his style alone, Mark Knofler is one of my favorite guitarists ever, especially lately...im 47 years old & in the U.S. ive heard dire straights on classic rock radio my entire life & always loved them, but lately im a little obsessed, a seriously great band. And, a great reaction:)
Same story. 46. Its good stuff, give me some Steve Miller next.
Yes!
was lucky enough to have seen them on this tour. they were fantastic.
Telegraph road from the alchemy live performance is excellent & worth the watch!
Just an Elite level Band with Iconic Guitar playing. This is a lesson in "dynamics", the art of band members being aware and listening to each other on a nuanced level of hard to soft and back again. A very seasoned and mature band. Incredible "clean" (non-distorted) guitar tones. The drummers performance is simply outstanding. You nailed it "It is so Perfect"
Mark Knopfler is a really incredible guitarist and musician. I know his son. He lives in Brighton in the UK and he’s also a very good musician.
Check out - Tunnel of Love . .Telegraph Road . . Money For Nothing - Brothers In Arms
Guarantee the most requested one will be Telegraph Road from the same concert, it was the closer and is another awesome live track that will go down as one of the greatest.
Terry Williams the drummer here took this version of the song to a wholle new level at the time, Dire Straits were already awesome, and this is one of the most famous guitar solos of all time. I love that this is your first time hearing it, my hair stood up when i heard for the first time, the year this was released!
He found out his father was at the concert and hadn't spoken to him for a couple of decades. This gig brought them together again. That's why he drummed out of his skin.
Dire Straits came out on their first album like gangbusters, "Sultans Of Swing" was their first real radio hit, it is more dressed up here, more jammed out, which enhances the whole experience. They had a big hit with "Money For Nothing", and, at the time, a ground breaking video which got massive airplay on MTV, because the song mentions MTV, with a little help from Sting, of the band The Police.
Great reaction! You could have stood up and danced. No one would complain about it 😃
Dance!! Feel the music!!
Wish she had - she’s lovely ! 😊
I love your reaction! Seeing the appreciation for what we grew up with. And the most amazing thing is Mark is left handed, self taught, and uses his fingers to pluck the strings not a pick. Chett Atkins called Mark a Certified Guitar Player, one of only 6 or 7 people he ever made that comment about.
They took the drum kit off stage on a stretcher....It made it. 😂❤
Whew! No drums were lost in the making of this song. Maybe lost a half-life?
@@edhorton2766 😭
I also got myself a cup of coffee straight away ... I used to play in a band myself, and I know what kind of energy there is when you're on stage and the audience goes crazy.
You are such a delightful wee person. This is a great song. I'm glad you liked it. 💯🥰
Maybe my favorite group from that era. Knopfler was amazing
Yes kids, meet Rock'n'roll! :)
No machine will ever be able to replace a man or a woman who mastered his/her instrument, a passion and feeling... remember that!
Terrific enjoying you having fun discovering new music. First time I heard this group I thought they're great and have a new unique fun style.
I have to say you hit on a lot of points I've always thought. I realized this. While loving trance, house, rock, metal ....Well basically everything. It seems for example that all good trance tracks have breakdowns and huge buildups and it gives you an euphoric feeling. This is obviously a totally different genre and this particular version of the song. Done Live is what makes this version of the song the best. The break down and long build up is EPIC. Every reactor i have seen can not stop moving from start to finish. As you said and showed. Great reaction.
Perfection
My favorite song from Dire Straits is.....Heavy Fuel.....reminds me of my crazy young days....lol....I think you'd love it!
Mark Knopfler was considered the 44th best guitarist of all time by the North American magazine Rolling Stone, which is no small feat. He is now 74 years old and still plays, and fantastically.
He is my favorite. to Me he is number one.
44th is a joke-he's top 10 easily.--Santana #1 -Keith Richards #2. But then as we all know that is IMO.
Personally, I think he's way higher than that
@@quintondees4501 He’s in my top 5. In no particular order, I’m most influenced by Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Lindsey Buckingham, Jeff Beck , and Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult). If you question my last choice, look up ‘Sinful Love’ and check out the solo from that song. If you want something longer, try ‘Astronomy live, 1978, Some Enchanted Evening’.
@@glennsmith8390 You know, I was thinking the same thing. The problem with the US, is unless it's super popular in the US, it doesn't rate. You only have to go through his library to know how good he is.
¡ Fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dire Straits with the lead singer Mark Knopfler
got a real music treasure, listen to "Brothers in arms"
the lyrics are sadly still true .
One of the best songs ever together with "Sultans of swing"
Nearly everything Dire straits did is a masterpiece.
Best band ever!
Mark Knopfler use only his fingers when he plays the guitar , never ever a plectrum.
Do Telegraph Road, from this same concert, Alchemy
Mark Knopfler, the one in red, is one of the top rock guitarists ever. Next time you watch this (I know you'll watch again), pay attention to his hands. One interesting thing about his playing style is that he plucks the strings with his fingers rather than using a guitar pick. That's normal in classical and flamenco guitar, but it's less common in rock.
But he's also a songwriter... he wrote all the Dire Straits songs (6 studio albums plus singles), and he has put out 10 albums as a solo artist since then. He's also done 9 movie scores, including the one for The Princess Bride. His most recent album came out in April 2024. He is 74 years old and has retired from touring, but he's still writing and working in the recording studio.
The best version of Dire Straits first song : great way to begin your journey.
Recommendations : Money for nothing (first : official video, then from Live Aid) / Brothers in Arms (first : official video, then any live version) / Telegraph Road (Alchemy Live) / Tunnel of Love / Romeo and Juliet / Once Upon a Time in the West / Private Investigations / Your Latest Trick ...
I could continue with so much : you won't find anything bad with them...
And don't forget to check Going Home, they usually ended their concert with this one and Marc Knopfler just released and new recording of this one with a bunch of great musician with him to raise money for the children suffering cancer.
Mark Knopfler joue sans le médiator mais avec ses doigts etc cela donne un son unique
This is one of the most epic and beautiful song ever ♥
I would like to remember the names of these wonderful musicians:
Mark Knopfler (The King of guitar) - lead guitar and lead vocals
John Illsley - bass and background vocals
Hal Lindes - guitar and background vocals
Alan Clark - piano and keyboards
Terry Williams - drums (he is really insane on drums)
Tommy Mandel - keyboards
not present on stage during this song:
Mel Collins - sax
Joop De Korte - percussions
My 12 and 14 year olds are obsessed with dire straits and pink floyd etc which makes me really happy 😊
I bought the album where this track comes from back in the summer of 1978 a time when the UK was in Dire Straits itself. I was a bricklayer, 34 years old married with two kids and we played the heck out of that album. On our 25th anniversary the kids put on Two Young Lovers (Alchemy Live) we got on the floor and showed all the kids there how to dance rock roll. I'm 80yrs old now and still rockin dudes.
I was there!
Never been called cool before, it must have been all the other cooler people!
We were on the balcony and it was jumping!
I was18 and this was my second ever gig, the first was the Rolling Stones at Wembley and I thought this sort of thing was normal.
Its not, its outstanding. Everyone on stage was at the top of their game.
Terry Williams on the drums was the biggest and best surprise, I think its the best live drumming I've seen.
They say his dad was there, he hasn't confirmed it, but then again he always played like that!
Telegraph Road is the stand out, Alan Clark's keyboard playing is sublime.
Its hard to believe it was recorded in 1983, I'm so glad we can revisit it and bring back great memories for me, when I had long hair!
You should react to Telegraph Road, its unique. But if you want something faster, Solid Rock is fantastic as well
Yes, Mark Knopfler is a musical genius. A wide variety of works, from rocking to somber, to bittersweet, and he even wrote scores for movies. Here's a few examples:

"Telegraph Road" from this Alchemy tour
When you hear the term "Tight" about a band, this is it. They were having a ball
Wow just wow that extended guitar solo they added to the performance 😮
Hi just found your channel. Nice reaction. From the same concert I think you'll love Telegraph Road and Once Upon A Time In The West. These guys do it so well Live, even better than studio versions. Cheers all the best from Australia 😂🎸🎸🎸
Entire concert was pure magic.
They had several excellent songs. They made an animated music video for MTV , entitled "Money for Nothing" (some call it "I want my MTV" ) with Sting joining in on vocals. Knopfler went on to have a solo career, and in his elderly years, did several duets. You might want to check one of his live performances with country music star Emmylou Harris.
I caught "The Straits" on there first tour through Canada, (Toronto). They played a set close to the recorded version. It was nothing like this. I kept thinking "come on boys, let 'er rip", but they never went over the top. Still, a fantastic show. Mark Knopfler NEVER played the guitar, he WAS the guitar - and still is! Thank you for your reaction Olavity.
Great Reaction, Glad you loved it
Mark was (IS) one my favorite guitarist. Sultans and "Money for Nothing" are my go tos from them. Also, Mark wrote a lot of the music for the movie "The Princess Bride".
I also loved Walk of Life. Like this song, it celebrates the joy of struggling artists
You should listen to their song "Brothers in Arms"
Master peace hands down. 😮
Oh he was still singing, with that 6 string beast draped over his shoulder!!!
Hi Olavity Music, Thank you for your lovely reaction to this amazing band. Sooo refreshing you understand that Dire Straits are best watched in Live Performances. Please forgive the length of this comment, but you might find some of this information interesting, and as you said you would like to see more of them, I hope the following links make it a bit easier:
Dire Straits, were a brilliantly gifted band of British musicians, led by Mark Knopfler, a Geordie, and one of the most celebrated British guitar heroes to emerge in the late 1970s and '80s, a phenomenal finger picking guitarist/singer/prolific songwriter/lyricist/composer/musician, who wrote & arranged every song for Dire Straits 6 albums, before leaving the band in 1995. For the most enjoyable video experience of Dire Strait (according to an early statement by MK) it’s best to avoid the ‘official’ videos, & watch their live undubbed performances that have additional content and are a lot more atmospheric. MK has had a helluva musical career, collaborating with many other famous artists, writing music scores for 9 films, & all the wonderful songs & lyrics for the albums made during his ‘Solo’ career with another band of multitalented musicians. Their 10th album was released this April 2024.

(Inspired by Britain’s short war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, way back in 1982, Mark Knopfler’s emotive song & lyrics ‘Brothers in Arms ‘focuses on the pointlessness of war. The song is a timeless anti-war song which has become an anthem for many ex-servicemen & women & the men & women serving in the armed services today. He sings the lyrics in the voice of a soldier dying on the battlefieldI
❤️MK with DS & Solo
Live at Wembley, is the best version ever, see and hear that one.❤❤❤
Oh yes, as usual always the same recommendations are mentioned: Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road, both masterpieces by the way 👍
Dire Straits fans almost never talk about the opening track of the Alchemy concert: "Once Upon a Time in The West". I think Knopfler does an outstanding performance in this song, but apparently nobody seems to care, because this song never was released as a single.
Really, take some time to listen more closely to Knopfler's brilliant melodic performance in Once Upon a Time in The West. It is phenomenal!!! 👌
Great reaction. Have seen many reactions to this one. So two 👍👍
They really are the UK twin to Bruce and the EStreet band. Both working class blue collar rock. And they both sing songs about normal everyday people.
I was there -The old Hammy Odeon !!
Now you have to see them a few years later - check out ‘Calling Elvis’ from their ‘On the Night’ gig! Loved your reaction-looking forward to your next video 😊
Loved your reaction Ola, loved how you started moving as soon as the music started . It does that to everyone.
Great reaction thanks ❤❤❤
Good reaction to the most perfect live rock music ever!
Mark must be one of the top 5 guitar players in the World.
I was looking at my settings but it’s at normal speed. This video is a little bit to fast. But it’s lovely to see that you enjoy the music of my younger years 😉
Mark Knopfler picks at the strings like a banjo. Lindsey Buckingham has a similar style. Different sound but the same technique.
Yes indeed, great band and stage blast performing. More Dire Straits: Money For Nothing and Walk of Life from the 1985 album Brothers in Arms. You`ll enjoy it as much as you did with this one.
Iam a bluegrass music musician and I can’t get enough of marks pickin style and dire straights music
Private Investigations & Romeo & Juliette Live are 2 more great tracks by Dire Straits, this group has stacks of great music ❤
i would be very surprised if you haven’t at least heard parts of Money for Nothing and not realizing it was Dire Straits
mark Knoffler has a unique guitar playing style
Sweet pick, awesome song👍🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶❤️
So when my brother and I were growing up, this song was hugely popular. At some point my brother decided he wanted to play guitar, and I remember the first solo he ever learned was the first solo you hear in this song (although the original is MUCH better than this live version, where he missed quite a lot of notes).
The song just has such a cool groove and beat to it.
Thank you for your reaction.
Oh, and another big hit of theirs was "Money for Nothing." That one has an even MORE famous guitar intro, probably one of the best ever. You should check it out.
Check out Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. It will make you cry, Mark Knofler makes his Guitar cry while he tells the story of a Soldier who’s dying in the Falklands War. If I’m not mistaken his friend died in that war.
This is just the beginning of your journey with Dire Straits.
From the same concert I recommend 'Once upon a time in the West, Tunnel of Love' & 'Telegraph Road'.
You have great energy! Good job on the review!!
I was a kid when this came out on the radio & god did I hate it !….Now I love it & especially this video !….great reaction !
As I always say... This was effortless fun...!
I'm so glad you've found one of the all time classics... I played this relentlessly when if first came out. Mark Knopfler redefined the guitar.
Best wishes.
I had the privilege of hearing all these classics when they were just out ....... keep going with Dire Straits, they're awesome, and Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players of all time!
Welcome to the part of your life where you know Mark Knopfler. One of the greatest guitarists of all time. I love trance like you (ASOT FTW) but these guys were legit good. Their concerts have so many talented musicians up on the stage. Check out "Telegraph Road" from the same concert (the Alchemy tour) and then also check out "Private Investigations" but make sure it's the 1991 concert they did in Nimes, France. It's epic.
Ahhhh, you never pause in those outtros!
Great reaction and with Dire Straits one of the best rock bands ever this is only the tip of the iceberg. Please try Tunnel of Love and Telegraph road from the same live show and also Romeo and Juliet and Brothers in Arms from their live 'On the Night' show.
That Mark Knopfler is fantastic! Money for Nothing, Chicks for Free.
