Hey y'all! In today's video I'm sharing all about the upsides and downsides of project pans. Project pans aren't for everyone (gasp!) and I know there have been moments where I felt like giving up panning altogether. Today we're talking about it all and when project panning isn't for you. If you're not a fan of project panning that's cool, and you're probably not alone.

I bought A LOT of makeup during 2020 & 2021 partly because I was just getting into makeup and wanting to try everything and partly as a coping mechanism for dealing with the state of the world. This year I'm on a no buy (with a couple of "rules" for exceptions) and have gotten very into projet panning. While I agree with you that having a goal to use something up can lead to neglect of other products, I mostly set low usage goals. This actually helps me use MORE of my makeup inventory than I otherwise would because it pushes me to cycle through different products regularly by meeting those low usage goals. I've especially enjoyed doing this for eyeshadows, cycling palettes in with a no-pan-left-behind approach.

Project panning has been a game changer for me. To be fair, I’m still pretty new at it - 2022 is my first one ever - but I totally see a mind shift. I had originally thought that I would be on a no buy until May. I’ve extended it to September based on how long it took my just to hit pan on a well used bronzer. Plus, I have other financial goals motivating me to not buy makeup as well so who knows if that’s the real driver.
I was focusing too much on my project pan items so I decided to actively rotate in other makeup but I have 20 usages goals for hand picked items. That seems to have removed the hyper focus.
The biggest win for me is that I now have a very clear understanding and of my preferences. I like cool tones. Didn’t really know that before. I don’t need more than one orange type blush because I don’t reach for them. I’ve also tossed makeup that was in the project that I figured out that I hated.
I’m hoping to keep this momentum but, like I said, I’m still new at this so we shall see.

I learned about panning in 2016 when I first started learning about makeup. I was about 15 years old and watched Pretty Pistol. I loved watching her videos and learning what project panning was. I think me finding about project panning so early on probably helped me so much. I never started a project pan at that point but I saw the consumerism side, and the anti consumerist content. It was a good Balance for that time in the makeup industry.
I absolutely love this consumerism content you have been doing lately. And being intentional. Please keep making these videos! They have helped me so much and makes me think more deeply about the beauty “community” and the beauty industry.
I do agree with your anxiety point. I do get anxious which is why I never project pan. I find if I just use something in my capsule makeup bag I can use it up. I just can’t do multiple products at a time, I find that I just get discouraged. Am I still project panning? Yes I guess I am lol. I just can’t do it like I see on CZcams. It’s too overwhelming! I feel like I can’t keep up. And that’s ok…we all use makeup at different paces

My make up collection is pretty small, but this year I've decided to start project panning anyways, because I wanted to use up what I had before buying new things even though I was wearing make up like twice a month. Simultaneously I've decided to go on a make up no buy for this whole year (at least). Because of project pan I found so many different ways to use what I have and I found different make up techniques that I like and I actually like applying make up so much now, that I do my make up almost everyday, even if I'm not going anywhere.
I'm glad that that I started a no buy along with my project pan because with my newfound love for make up I would have bought way too much make up and I haven't even used up one item in my project pan yet.
For the downsides so far I've learned that even though I don't get bored of using the same make up items everyday, I sometimes feel kinda guilty of neglecting my other products, but something that helps me is telling myself that If I didn't start project panning I would have neglected almost all of my make up.

Project panning, overall, tends to have more positives than negatives for me. I like it because it gives me a good indication of how long its going to take me to use something up, which, might I add, is far too long. It also lets me know what I think of a product. The downside I found to project panning initially is that I would hyperfocus on those items, and then get bored, so I'd go and buy things. Now I tend to do shorter term projects, or ones where I rotate through items. I'll do a seasonal basket every 3 months or so, to give me base and complexion products for the season ahead, as I tend to change my makeup with the weather. Eyeshadows I will focus on every now and then, but i'll swap out when I want so as not to get bored. This i've found has significantly reduced my interest in eyeshadow. I've also come to realise that i'm very boring when it comes to my eyeshadow looks now... I used to experiment with colour, but not so much anymore. Boring neutral for me at heart is what I desire. Currently i'm adoring rose-toned browns, so i'm playing with all the rose toned browns I own to create gorgeous looks that satisfy my cravings. It's a good feeling.

The boredom with panning is why I set a usage goal on powder and cream products- the only items I have to use up are my base products like foundation buy I've only got 2 - I come to accept that as long as I get good use out of my lipsticks and rotate though all of them it not the end of the world if one goes bad after 3 or 4 years and I did not pan it a usage goal makes sure all things get their moment and nothing sits collecting dust

You're right that there are definitely more good things than bad things about project panning! It's a fun way of thinking about things that used to seem mundane before, especially projects with cute names and themes (Pan of Green Gables, anyone?)
That said, I'm starting to feel the downside now that I'm in my second full year of it. Namely, that some of the things I'm trying to get through and get rid of are ones I neglected for a reason. And now they're being neglected for other reasons: they're old, I'm dreading just looking at them (wasted money!), they bring back sad memories, etc.
Right now I'm looking at an old Stila cream blush that I really should throw out, but it's still usable (even if it does smell a little waxy), doesn't break me out, hasn't changed color, and I love the container it came in. I've hit pan in it, so it's not a total loss. But I don't want to be stuck using only that and not my new ones, which won't stay fresh forever either. And that puts me into one of my own downsides of the issue: the dilemma of "do I keep going and finish this damn thing which is taking me forever, or do I just scrape out the container, save it for pressing other things into, and call it done?" The danger of neglecting new things you might like better than your old ones is very real.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Před 2 lety +1

Yes I love fun panning themes and I'm totally with you that it can add some fun and excitement to using your makeup.
However, I am also really feeling the feels about neglect too. People love to talk about the (I don't remember the name) but it's something like the lost money fallacy- you've already spent your money no matter what you do with it. Even if that's true I still feel like if I don't finish something it's a waste of money. I have blushes that I am so loving that I'd rather be using over my hourglass palette but there's no way I can just say ok I'm going to toss that into the bin now. I'm in my third year of panning so I feel like you and I are in similar places with the panning "blues" if you will.

Until I came up with a system I didn't enjoy project panning, I have a small collection and primarily use liquid/cream products which take forever to finish. Essentially I love everything in my kit, I'm not panning to use up stuff I want gone, I'm just trying to get more use of products that are older. And yet I don't want to neglect my newer stuff because otherwise I'll always be wearing old products, and with liquids and creams that can be a disaster depending on the product.
I do what you do, set monthly goals for each product. But I have a week where my makeup is all project pan items and then a week where I have free choice, then a week of project pan and then a week of free choice. I really enjoy the process now because I don't feel boxed in. But at the end of the day these "projects" are guides to me, I'm ok with straying outside the rules if I need to. ;)
Hailey O. and Kat / kitschsnitch have been project panning for years on their individual channels (they do the BeautyNews channel together), they also have done "was that haul worth it" videos for a few years where they look back on past purchases which I've noticed other youtubers doing more lately. Hailey will do reflections for the previous year, so for example when she talks about her March purchases for 2022 she'll then look at what she bought in March 2021 and talk about whether they were good purchases or not.

I don't think I've EVER panned a blush because I often either forget to use it or simply don't bother. But I want to have some blush around so that when I want to use it I can.
Also, I buy very cheap makeup because I'm poor (mostly just a cheapskate. I'm so cheap it used to be a harmful and bad thing, especially in terms of food.) Anyway, back to blush...
Nowadays the only blush I buy is in some sort of combo; previously that was a lip and cheek stain that I finished. And now I have a highlighter, bronzer, blush powder trio that I'm working my way through slowly. I'd never heard of project pan before this year and I think it's really cool. I also really appreciate that you talk about the good and the bad of it.
You're a wonderful content creator and I absolutely had to subscribe even though you're the only person in this genre, and the first person who talks about makeup that I've ever subbed to. You won me over with your video about makeup over-consumption and then I watched a few more and now I'm going through binge watching your stuff. Great video, as usual. I hope a lot more people find your channel because you are so kind and open and helpful and just a great voice on this platform. Thank you for being authentically you 💖

I’ve been panning for 4 - 5 years. I discovered beauty CZcams in 2015 and that is when I started my collection. Before then I only bought what I needed. I would use it all up organically. I always had a few blushes and lipstick options. Ideally, I would love to get back to that.
After panning for a few years I have cut back on spending and used up a lot of products. But I can’t seem to stop spending. It’s maddening. I dedicate myself to finishing products to minimize my collection and curb my spending to buy “the next best thing” once I finish an item.
But, some things I love about panning are having a go to look and really knowing those products. I love seeing my progress . Moving items out of my collection brings me a lot of joy. The panning community is so kind and welcoming. I love new projects and fun ideas.
Some things I dislike: some of my products have gone bad, expired, not as good as they used to be.
I also dislike that anxiety over not using my panning items. Sometimes you just gotta use a different blush, but when you do you feel bad for not making progress.
Taking panning breaks is a must! Focusing on minimal products gives me a break as well.
I’m panning a full face, a few eyeshadows and rotating my palettes.

I like this little mini-series you’ve got going! I think you made good points on both sides. I’ve found that the project panning community to be fairly positive and supportive to each other. While I’ve watched a lot of panning content, I have to admit that I don’t find myself as drawn to the channels that are purely project pan focused. I prefer channels like yours where the content is more varied and of course, lots of reflection on buying decisions and habits, etc. I really like Too Much Tash because she does a lot of content about how long it takes to use up certain categories of products, but I also follow Christina Chang, Alejandra Lisette, and Jessikita Banana.

I’m in camp anti-pan. In addition to the reasons you talked about, my biggest beef is that I feel like so many panners are hitting pan on products that are either somewhat or extremely expired. Like a 12 year old blush, or some ancient discontinued eyeshadow pallet, stuff that’s kind of gross to be still be using. I do not support using any kind of expired products, it can be harmful to you and your skin. Why even buy skincare if you’re just going to wear old expired makeup on your face and all day? Especially eye products, you can get pinkeye from trying to pan a mascara. Clean makeup brands are even worse to pan because they expire much faster, and I happen to prefer those brands. I accept that I can’t use up every product before it expires and that I will have to toss them at that point. Instead of “panning” as my goal I try instead to limit my waste by buying the minimum amount of makeup products. I have a minimalist makeup collection and for the most part I use only one of each product at a time (one mascara, foundation, concealer, brow pencil, eye liner) and for those products I will repurchase when it runs out or expires, whichever comes first. For lipsticks and eyeshadows I buy just enough to give me the variety that makes me happy so I have 3 lipsticks (red, pink, nude) and one eyeshadow pallet maybe 6 shadows total that gives me a couple of easy go-to looks I enjoy wearing all the time and I will replace those when they expire even if I’m only halfway through them. I think that’s totally ok. Yes, some products can last longer than the expiration date, but only by so much and you have to really be careful since many do go bad when they say, sometimes maybe sooner. I think tossing things right when they expire, while it feels wasteful initially, actually teaches a bigger lesson. After you toss all your expired makeup into the trash and realize how much money you wasted it will make you never want to do it ever again. You will buy and use less.

Loved this video! Totally agree with all of your points. Personally I do project pans just on my own without posting because I love looking back at the photos! Also totally agree it doesn’t change your mindset inherently. I really like your channel because I learned to reflect on my consumerism choices more than I had before! But I also feel the guilt aspect sometimes. I had to declutter a ton of products recently because they were all really expired and breaking me out and messing with my eyes but I still felt guilty about it which is so dumb!! But my skin and eyes are so much happier now 😂 still have a decent amount in my collection and I used a lot of it before declutter if so I’m just working on making sure I don’t use it as an excuse to buy more makeup! So far so good tho! Only bought replacement products at the Sephora sale and talked myself out of buying things I wanted but hadn’t searched first since idk if I’ll like them or not! And the sale really isn’t that great for me to have justified a purchase on those items. Love your channel!!

This video resonated so much that I've rewatched it a couple of times!
I've been panning for a while, and one strong positive I've found is that it allowed me to to find my place in the makeup community. I'm not a makeup artist, or even a talented amatuer, I don't feel comfortable in front of a camera. However, I do love makeup, and I love to write, and I love to try and use up what I have. Through panning, I've found groups on Reddit with regular weekly/monthly/yearly activities and challenges, and have built genuine yet anonymous, connections, and discovered my creative writing hobby.
A couple of things I've learned: It's really important to 'know your why', and to tailor your project accordingly. This can help help mitigate some of the downsides of long-term, exclusive use project pans. One downsode you mentioned that I really experienced is that panning didn't curb my overconsumption. Going on a No Buy taught me that when I thought I was buying makeup, I was actually buying distraction, because there were issues in my life that I was avoiding dealing with. Sometimes shopping is not just shopping, and that blew my mind.
Thanks again for such a great discussion! Cheers from Sydney, Australia

I have learned i run threw the things i enjoy faster then the items i use once and awhile. Im also someone who wears makeup 5 days a week, sometimes 6 if we have date night and so i do use more than a person who only uses it 2 times a week. Also if you are light handed and only wear 2 days a week you will have less movement over someone like my slef. I just want everyone to keep that in mind. I have a set 5 itmes im actively panning and 5 others i put goals on that rotate every month so i am always feeling like im enjoying more of my item.

Project Panning has many pros. I think finding an online community might be the biggest one. I think a big negative that CAN occur, is that people focus on panning every product and color, even if it doesn't suit their coloring or their aesthetic preferences. And they apply more product to use it up faster, resulting in a less aesthetically pleasing outcome. I feel like once you know a product doesn't look work for you, it would be better to consider it panned, or finished, and moved on to things that make you feel great.
