Was decluttering all of my categories all day - make up, hair products, nails exactly for the same reasons you said. I’ve never had an extremely excessive collection but I have been guilty of using shopping to self soothe. I’m just in a place where I’m tired of the constant push for consumerism and the mental stress that having too many things brings. Buying more organizers. Spending hours organizing “my stuff”. Just absolutely tired of it. It isn’t fun anymore. I miss simplicity and spending my mental energy and time on things that actually matter more and bring me more happiness. I’ve also slowly unsubscribed to beauty channels over the past year.

Tbh I came for the beauty a couple of months ago but I prefer the conscious consumption videos. Your channel is unique in that aspect. I think you summarized perfectly why project pans stress me out to do myself. My aim is to use more but then I end up obsessing every more

    • @shawnaripari

glad you stayed 💕 project panning can be great but when it starts sliding into the realm of stress it's not worth it anymore. At least that seems to be the case for us

  • @alexandrah535
    @alexandrah535 Před 11 měsíci +13

I’m totally with you here! Project panning drove me to obsess over makeup, over using it up fast enough, over having the “perfect” capsule makeup collection… now I pan makeup, because I just have makeup I need that works OK (not perfect) and I will use it until it isn’t good anymore or until it’s gone. I just refuse to let makeup be a priority in my life anymore, whether that’s buying or curating or using or any of it. I’m the woman now who owns 4 imperfect lipsticks that float in her handbag or makeup bag, getting dinged up, and if it goes off or is used up, I might buy a different one, or I might buy the same one, or I might not have any lipstick for a while. Basically, Im endeavoring to be my mom 😂

Same about the project panning being obssessive. I actually started buying more so I would have the "perfect" products when I panned everything else.... still enjoying the hour I take to do makeup in the morning but done with obsessing over what I do/don't use/have

Mine too, sister! Somehow at the end of 2022 my interest in make up just went poof! and now do not watch or have ANY interest in beauty content. Don’t even enjoy using my own huge collection that I collected past 4 years. Actually very relieved I’m over it. Trying to declutter mindfully. What a waste, but guess had to just go through it….

My makeup era has started being over for a little while now, and when I got depression earlier this year, I felt that I knew what I needed to live and what was unnecessary. I was in the beauty community since Michelle Phan’s beginning days on YT. This year, I deleted my ten year old Sephora account. But I’m content.

It has been amazing to follow along your contentment journey! I love your videos makeup or otherwise, and I’m excited for the new direction you are taking ❤
Also, what you said about project panning REALLY resonated. I don’t think anyone needs to pan for more than a few years to learn the lessons from it. It’s not really necessary to keep doing it forever unless you just really enjoy it. I’m so glad you’re being true to yourself and letting go of things that don’t serve you anymore!

I definitely agree with your stance on panning. When I started I didn't have a plan beyond just starting, but for a while there I assumed I'd be a planner forever because I enjoyed it so much. But if the goal is to be "conscious" I think stopping is a big sign of success which I love.

I think it is inspiring that you are allowing yourself to break away from subjects that no longer interest you in the same way. It makes me wonder how many other CZcamsrs feel kind of "trapped" in their niche because they depend on their viewers for their income and may be afraid to try anything different. I've recently stopped watching most beauty CZcamsrs, in favor of the exploration of aesthetics and identity (generally unrelated to makeup), social analyses, and other more intellectually engaging content that you do so well! I'm excited to see what you decide to do next!

Thank you so much 💗 I actually heard from a really big creator (around 500k at the time) that it was basically impossible to break away from their niche because even when they started making other content their audience really demands their old stuff and youtube wouldn't stop categorizing them as their old niche so they didn't get the fresh start they hoped. In some ways being small is a blessing so I can pivot as I see fit, even if the pivot is small

I can really relate to your feelings towards makeup. I was so consumed with the beauty yt community for years and it definitely made me make more beauty related purchases than I would have on my own. I decided this year to project pan and keep myself accountable with a yt channel and it has completely made me look at makeup differently. I just don't have as much interest, even though I still enjoy doing my everyday makeup, all of the new items just don't hold my attention anymore and I'm also not interested in watching CZcamsrs talk about the newest products. I had some major life changes that affected my view of my makeup collection as well, but in all I'm just not interested like I once was.

I relate to this a lot, first I swapped from fashion/hair to beauty. There's so much more to life that I want to share than new makeup. It deeply effected the core of my channel to change from a review based channel to mindful consumption, so no-buy and project panning became an interest. Then beauty consumption dwindles and life is evolves, you just don't feel the desire to create content about that anymore.

At the end of this video you said thank you to us but I wanna say thank you to you. THANK YOU! I have been project panning for less than a year and I get sick of it. I’ve been buying new make up but been like I will just use it once and then gotta get back to my project pan items. I saw the bh cosmetics waffle face palette on Sarah Roses channel and when I saw it in store I was so happy. This was after revolution brought bh cosmetics and you couldn’t buy it in store in England before this. I was so happy and this is the item I was just talking about. I paused this video and emptied out my make up bag went and shopped for all the new things I have brought but haven’t tried or used a handful of times. I’m so excited to do my make up tomorrow. I am gonna delete the notes on my phone which has the tally’s for my project pan, my make inventory and my empties. I find myself looking at all lists multiple times a day and I have been aware that I have a problem for a while now. I feel is very easy to be labeled and branded in YT as one thing. We, ourselves, forget that we are all a whole and what we choose to show in a video is just part of that wholeness. I love talking or using beauty products and dont have many ppl close to me that enjoy doing talking about eyeshadow as much as I do and that's why the "community" is interesting. But again. I like to talk about other things too. I enjoy spending time with friends that have nothing to do with beauty or YT for that matter. I just discovered your channel, and this video really resonates with me! I’ve never been really into makeup, but during the pandemic I got interested in trying out different kinds of makeup, which turned into overconsumption. I don’t have a huge makeup collection, but I’m also not using it all that much, so I’m thinking of doing a project pan alternating with monthly product rotation, so I don’t get obsessive with the project panning and still use my makeup collection. The algorithm got it right by suggesting your video. I totally used to binge watch beauty CZcamsr content because it felt like I’m interacting with people who love the same things I love. Then in direct correlation the more beauty CZcams I watch the more I consume. Now that I work from home full-time I don’t use my makeup nearly as fast as I used to. And my interests are geared more towards health and wellness. So this past weekend I decluttered soooooo much. I now have what I consider items I really enjoy using and yes I still have about 10 blushes, 6 bronzers and probably 10+ eyeshadow palettes but I don’t miss all the products I said goodbye to. Plus, I don’t feel bad about the money spent because it’s gone and I did enjoy the fun of getting the products and playing with it. Long story long, I still love my beauty community on CZcams but I more easily sit out some launches. Have a great day and thanks for the honest video.

I do have a large number of makeup products, but it has been my hobby for 25 years. I think carefully about what I want to purchase, and while I sometimes have regrets and go through periods where I don't buy anything, I can never see myself giving it up. My main concern with the space is that it's mostly driven by new launches, as that generates revenue for both companies and creators alike. Recently, I have been turning to products that have been on the market for a while and refraining from purchasing new releases, because it can be very difficult to distinguish between quality and hype. My favourite type of creators are makeup artists who focus on techniques or people who provide entertainment value, like Theresa Is Dead.

@@shawnaripari I'm glad you addressed women still being labeled as vapid when being interested in makeup. I was hoping younger generations wouldn't have to deal with this issue, but currently, it seems we're going backward and not forward in terms of feminism. Yes!!! I know I've internalized the judgement I've received. When I was in my PhD it was positioned as "smart girls don't..." or she's not "smart" because of it. The latter happened more in undergrad before the channel. People took one thing about me and made it all of me. Even if it was a joke I took that idea and ran with it and now I'm undoing it and I wish I still had that interest to help rewrite the narrative.

I came to you because of the beauty content.
But there are other people who can inspire me or give me recommendations, although actually these types of content lead to overspending, I’m not sure if a subscription to those creators is good for me and will revisit that.
    that said:
I stayed because of contentment and intentional spending talk. Even your goal content is great!
Everyone has goals, everyone has problems to reach them. And achieving things while being kind to oneself seems so hard.
You give us great ideas not for products but life itself.
That to me is far better!
    Thanks a lot :)

I found you through your no buy content (probably because I'd been watching Cindy Guentert-Baldo's no buy videos) and I would say in that time I saw your overarching theme as less "beauty" and more "conscious consumption while still enjoying a niche hobby (which happens to be beauty)". Which was interesting to me as someone who has a different niche hobby that involves consumables and is notorious for being a rabbit hole.
I really appreciated your understanding to the people who aren't interested in sticking around! I don't always see that attitude.

When you said your make up era is over... It reminded me how I'm for many months now thinking how I'm mainly over the "beauty community". I've watched so so many channels the last 3 to 4 years to see if I find creators I enjoy and most of it is just not interesting or even frustrating to me. And I think it's mainly because of how it absolutely is not what the average consumer does or cares about. It's all about (not) buying, collecting or decluttering, amassing or reducing. It's hardly ever about just wearing make up, getting ready, giving plain, informative reviews or just enjoying make up. It's over the top and kinda extreme in all directions. Panning also isn't normal 5 consumer" goes through the length of emptying products that most panners do. people spend much time obsessing over make up that goes beyond and can even ruin the joy of make up. The only channels I really enjoy are plain make up news channels that simply share random make up release news from the companies without adding their own sell /spin on it, Emily Noel because she truly and actually loves applying and wearing make up day to day same as me and never wants to sell anyone anything (nor does she think make up is this huge self important entity) & very few channels that I know do truly informative, detailed and accurate reviews of products and hold back on opinions, hyperbole and making products look better than they are + Lara and your channel. None of the above ever make me think or feel that I should buy or try something nor do I feel I'm watching a shopping addiction or vicious cycle in action. I think you can still love and use make up and just be over what the self proclaimed beauty community at large thinks make up is all about 😅 I'm in this weird space... I very much like make up but the beauty community is just not giving me what I'm looking for, rather dulling the joy of make up for me

you make a lot of interesting points here. I'm a little torn myself on whether I think the beauty community (herein referred to as BC) reflects their audience's actions/interests. At one point that was definitely true, for a long time. Review, haul, buy and declutter channels were the BC for a long time, this is what was "normal," but with the rise of conscious consumer creators, the popularization of project panning, no buys etc, there's more pushback and alternative content available that has changed people's minds and interests. I've tuned into some big creators now and then and some aren't getting the views they once were while others still are. I might just be applying my own feelings to the masses, but it feels like there's only so many years someone can watch the same BC content and a, not get bored b, not have their spending/shopping habits affected c, shift interests. Even if this isn't true, I tired of the mainstream BC content a while ago, and have just been watching small creators and/or conscious consumer creators almost entirely for 3 years. There are many creators who are making content where their beliefs align with mine so it's not a problem of i don't like how you shop, but just a true interest shift. I think maybe what kept me in the BC as long as I was, WAS the shopping aspect. Now that I've changed I wonder a little if I was ever all that interest in makeup or if this was something I was interested in because I could buy stuff? Like, what if the book community fell into my lap at the same time? Would it have been this exciting thing I fell in love with? Just a thought. Anyways, I'm sorry that the BC isn't giving you want you want anymore Having it be a place that dulls the joy instead of enhancing it can be a frustrating experience.

@@shawnaripari for me the beauty community which is really the Western, English speaking community - as I have some differing thoughts on the Korean beauty community which I'm following for even longer - never fully reflected me and my interests at least not since the explosion of big channels and beauty gurus which made it much more commercial and sales oriented. But it seemed a bit more varied /interesting for a time and the release cycle, push of products wasn't as insane yet. The early years on CZcams looked quite different. I think all that is what turned a lot of people off once they started to actually see through it. Early on most people were really not thinking that creators are not just normal folks like you and I with no other motives but could actually be salesmen no different than any marketing team. I definitely heard this sentiment a lot. But I also often had a strong impression that'
many people who don't actually love make up got pulled into it either to make money as creator... Definitely saw loads of those... or as viewers just to kill the time and yes find stuff to buy. You can see consumerism in every other community on social media... Stationery, computer games, nail polish, books, collectibles... They all have their hell cycle of hauls, collection videos and declutters. And you see people switching from one to the other never changing their actual behaviour. It's turning me off in all of them 😒 guess we just have to find the select people we enjoy

I love this for you. Its not fun or creative to do something that you no longer love and its OKAY and healthy to grow as a person and that means you can shift and evolve your content. I will miss our project pans but I understand why you aren't going to be doing them anymore and thats okay. You may find new ways to love on makeup that share in the future but ultimately I love your channel for way more than just the makeup side as you have such interesting and relevant ways of sharing with us about consumption and consumerism and a bunch of other things. I love reading and if you are talking about books too I would love that as there is the concept that on YT you tend to get pigeon holed and for me that doesn't make sense. You can love reading and makeup too without having to prioritizing one over the other.

thank you so much for your support! I do have a book channel that I post on occasionally, mostly fantasy reads. As I figure out my posting schedule and things I hope to post on their more regularly if fantasy is your thing. So I do have my reading outlet there because sometimes cackling about books is truly such a joy. I think it could make sense to talk about the occasional non-fiction book here like I did with Marie Kondo and her books, but I'm still not 100% sure on that.
