The second half of the video talks about how to find balance on your no buy if you're struggling, if your no buy has lost its shine, or if it just sucks right now.

    I feel the best way to control a no buy or low buy is to limit the amount of social media influence u get. Be it Instagram, checking out your fav blogger. The moment your eyes get set on something interesting, u start yearning to purchase. I have been controlling my no buy for the past 2 months and I have to say its pretty tough. U can be critical and make the best decisions. But the best thing to do is to cut off all the " entertainment "

      I wholeheartedly agree ! I never feel as content with what I have as when I steer clear of social media. When I fashion makeup content creators on youtube, instagram or pinterest, I hyperfocus on it and feel tempted to buy new shiny things. Same with makeup content, or interior design/decor content. If I don't think about it, and just use what I have, I am much happier and more satisfied with what I already own.

      Me!!! I have been buying less than before but I still spend way more than i should. I blame it mostly on the fact that I still watch beauty content. I need to stop. Watching Netflix instead is a great idea!

      I stopped following most of makeup influencers because their content was repetitive. Everyone is getting the same PR. Then I noticed: I declutter and give away waaay more than I buy. My collection shrunk from a few drawers to one makeup bag and I didn't change the way I do my makeup at all.
      After that I found that I'm no longer interested in that type of content at all. So I unfollowed most makeup brands on Instagram, only left my favourite one.
      It helps. A lot

    A good influence in booktube: Withcindy! She actively avoids buying books. She sets a great example for reading without spending a lot on books. (These days she gets sponsorships & PR, but she gives away many of her books to her subscribers)
    Her sense of humor is also great lol

    I think the difference about a book only no buy is that people force themselves to take breaks in the buying so they can read what they've actually bought, usually because they've run out of space in bookshelves. lol. As it has been described multiple times, buying books is a hobby in itself, actually reading what you've bought is a whole other hobby. lol. And you can get through a book a hell of a lot faster than makeup. I guess you could say the same applies to makeup.... some people love buying it, and not so much wearing it.
    You've hit the nail on the head with the contentment aspect. I've just done a massive declutter to move continents, and i'm really content with what i currently own, even though I only have 1/3rd of what I had at the start of the year. I'm interested in looking at some new stuff, and I bought some replacements for items I didn't have (powders, etc). when I got here, but i've got no real desire to purchase anything new, because i'm enjoying and using things that have been around for YEARS that have seen barely any use, because they were buried under all the other stuff I owned. Like right now, i'm adoring a basic matte eye, and i'm giving myself permission to use a neutral brown shadow as much as I want, because I adored it. But it's now 5 or 6 years old (still fine, not irritating) and i'm learning I need to not squirrel stuff away, because it will go bad. I'm loving delving into other stuff that has seen minimal use, and I feel amazing knowing whatever I pull out of my drawer, for the most part, i'm going to love. But i'm still feeling overwhelmed, and that's a good motivator to keep using stuff up. I'm rejoining the Project 50 pan - finish 50 items before i'm allowed to buy anything non-essential. I feel like this will give me time to settle into my new collection size, which is what's needed. There's things on my wishlist, but they can wait. :) Although I think i'll have to buy a full size of the NARS creamy concealer I'm on the verge of using up.... I'm LOVING how it looks, feels and sets at the moment. I have others in shades that don't really work right now with my current colour or skin texture, so I think that's ok. :)
    For me, my balance in a no buy was nothing essential, or I didn't already own. So if I ran out of something, I could replace it, or if I found something (like iridescent multichromes) that i couldn't dupe out in my collection, I could purchase it. I felt like that was a really great balance. It helped me work through what I had, and rotating stuff out and really playing with what I owned was really helpful, because it gave me time to really play and see what I liked and enjoyed.

      Thansk for sharing your experience here! You're right that the parallels between the book no buy and the makeup no buy. My friend and I have been speaking a lot about this and I've found it quite interesting!
      I'm loving hearing about your contentment and goals and just the joy you're getting from using up your stuff! Congrats on the move as well!!

    I decided a low buy (for me) for nail polish starting now... I was thinking no buy..but it won't work 😅I just bought a whole new collection of an Indie brand. So that's that. I decided to restrict myself to buy only 1 polish at each monthly Polish Pick Up. From my fav brand Moo Moo's Signatures. I actually wrote the owner & she confirmed she is participating each month. I hope/think focusing and being able to buy my fav brand will help me to restrict myself without feeling like loosing out. I'm not panning polishes but I do wear 3 to 4 different manicures a week usually mixing colours so I'm actually using my polishes quite a bit.

    I still haven't broken my no buy. I had commented on a previous video that I was planning a birthday spree with birthday and Christmas money but never did. And have decided not to. Instead I'm spending that money here and there on replacement items that I either would put off buying or not buy very good quality. So far that's been 5 new VS undies (old ones were saggy and baggy), new pre owned purse (mine was too small), and new phone case (partly cuz I ruined the plastic cleaning it and partly cuz I've had the same style case for my last 2 phones and needed a change).

    I can relate so much! I've found myself being overly critical of my purchases (and former buying habits), which has led to a lot of negative self-talk... Btw, you made me finally drop my "use up x number of products" yearly goal! I've kind of realized that it does not really contribute to my overarching goal (which is roughly that I want to feel authentic & free :) - e.g. feel like my collection represents my needs/lifestyle and that I don't feel weighed down by guilt (of not using x enough, of having bought x, ...), shame (of owning too much x,...), and, which you have highlighted, anxiety (which for me results from tracking too much by the numbers..).
    Your contentment project in general is super inspiring to me!! I'm still focusing a lot on buying/not buying (yet) instead of what I already have.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  Před 2 lety

    It's a good point about finding out via no buy and taking a break what we actually miss, what we use daily. What matters to us. I have been on a skin care no buy since November last year as I had bought a lot of stuff during sales.
    Going through the different things and routines shows what you like or what skincare steps you need or are willing to invest. I guess for me it reinforced old faves. I have quite a few holy grail items I'm loving and using for years and they still hold up!! So I decided for me to simply buy replacements of my faves. There's no point trying random products when I have perfect for me products already

    So many good points!!! 😁 Yess contentment is individual and not the same for everyone. Just looking at numbers gives the illusion that contentment and what is right for you can be measured and quantified by simple numbers. It might even lead to us loosing the joy in our things or maybe even decluttering things we love or need... Simply because it looks a lot on paper

    I'm on No Buy Journey this year too and recording it here for You Tube what I find is that I'm having to explain myself a lot because people come to see No Buy content as that your a 'massive' over spender or have luxury products / items to go through and how your going to 'changing' your shopping habits and have this massive 'ah ha' moment. For me it's just every day stuff and clutter that is in the house and years of direct sale products that we want to use and go through people that follow me know I'm a frugal person so say they enjoy watching as they know I'm already coming from a low spend lifestyle and how I'm able to be even more frugal with things.

    Last year i did a makeup low buy and failed horribly. This at frist put me in a ruff spot, however i have learend alot and put it to good use. This year parshal low buy and parshal no buy. I look at all my item's something's i wont buy due to i just want them all out of my inventory. The other things i use up i only replace it once whole category is gone and i will only buy once this has happens. It is working for me so far. I have un subscribe to emails, types of social meida, it has really helped. Im really thinking about doing this with other things in my life next year like eating out, clothing and entertainment etc. I feel like cutting some of these other areas down a bit will benefit myself for the long run, i just have to figure out a balance for it frist before i dive in.

    The journal of consumer behaviour sounds fascinating! I'm definitely feeling #6 on my low buy, finding it hard to buy things that I'm actually allowed to according to my rules. On the plus side I have support from my partner and he's even said maybe he should do it though he isn't right now. In fact he's been mostly paying for all our dates because he knows I'm budgeting even though dates are one of my free spend areas! It's nice anyway, I appreciate it. What i realised watching this video is that my low buy is really how I plan to continue beyond this year. I really like having a budget. I'm thinking maybe i should have done it monthly rather than seasonally because it feels like a looong stretch to my next buying opportunity... At the beginning it felt like fun. I've realised that buying things gave me a feeling of agency and control over my life, yet it also led to being "out of control". Anyway paying off that next chunk of debt in a few days is going to feel good 👍

    I want to do a no buy but I don’t think it’s the right time in my life due to fluctuating weight and moving to a house. Instead I found a way to incorporate no buy categories. I am doing no vending machines at work 😂, no books, makeup, skincare/bath, stationary, and accessories.

  • @DDixon-kk1kf
    @DDixon-kk1kf Před 2 lety

    I haven’t bought a book in over a year so I guess it counts as a no-buy although it wasn’t intentional at the time. Last year I read 58 books and this year I am on book 13. While I haven’t read the majority of the books that I bought before this no buy, I have really utilized my local library. I have a Kindle and I found out my library has Libby. Through this process I have discovered that listening to audiobooks provides the right amount of mental and audio stimulation while I do work and homework that prevents me from getting bored.
    There are some downsides like listening to a 40+ hour book but being unable to finish it during the 3 weeks that you have borrowed it for. Then having to wait 3+ months to get access to it again to listen to about 4 hours of additional content. During this time however, I have started other series that are also enjoyable and by the time the initial book is available again, the storyline will feel like a new season of a favorite tv show coming back on.
    I also realized that I rarely go back and reread books I have already read, so it works better if I just wait for the book to be available at my library. There are some books that I will likely purchase eventually but it will be because I have already read them and find that they have a wealth of knowledge. I want to eventually own them so that I can make all types of annotations in the margins and see how my mind changes over time.
