I think I’d be fun to learn what your “one and done” kind of products/items are. Stuff you have and never think about and never feel the urge to replace or upgrade or accumulate more of. (For me an example would be makeup brushes- I bought the ones I have many years ago and never would replace them unless they somehow broke or went missing. I don’t think about them at all!)

My focus is not necessarily specifically avoiding purchasing things, but to try to spend my time in ways that make me feel fulfilled so I don't go looking for more things. I have been working out more, doing more theater, baking more, I joined a local theater company's board. And for the most part I didn't need to buy anything for any of this. I already have what I need to do the things I love, and have been reminding myself of how much better it feels to do things rather than consume products or content about those things. This helps me to both bring fewer things into my life and actually be using the things I already have. Feels pretty good.

For me: no more perfumes or fragrance oils, unless it's a replacement, and the same for skincare cos I have a simple and cost effective routine that what works for my skin now; no more 'statement' nail polishes; no more sweaters; and no more candles (tea lights excluded). Wow - go, Kate!

One of the ways I know whether something is a "one and done" product for me is the experience of using it once it's purchased. Am I savoring using the item now that I finally own it, or am I almost disappointed that there's now a long stretch ahead of actually using the item? I love using my favorite sunscreen each day, and it's satisfying to use it up and go rebuy it. But when I allow myself to buy a new nail polish, I'm almost sad that the possibility of buying other colors is now gone. If buying an item or product just pivots immediately into dissatisfaction, it's not something that I should keep throwing money at going forward. Thank you for all the excellent videos you're putting out to keep the holidays in perspective!

Makeup is a BIG one on my no-buy, but I think a lot of other people are feeling the same way. Maybe we all feel a bit fatigued after hoarding it or getting bombarded with constant new product releases since 2014 or so; taking a more minimalist approach feels very calming and reasonable. I have de-potted some eye shadows from my original UD Naked palette that I still use to this very day 😅 They're 12 years old and still truckin'! I've come to a lot of practical realizations about what I actually *use* in my makeup collection over the past year or two, and it's been freeing to own up to that.

I have EXTREMELY thick and long curly dry hair to the point where my scalp hurts from carrying the weight of it all. Hair oil has been terrible for my very dandruff prone scalp. It's funny how the moment i believed i started caring for my hair with oiling my scalp i got a bad case of dandruff that wouldn't heal and i began losing more hair than usual. My Indian scalp failed my acncestral oils lol. Also, love your videos! You are such a delight to listen to. So articulate and eloquent every time. ❤❤

May I ask if you’re someone who drinks pretty “default” coffee flavours? I ask because I tend to like “sweet” coffee flavours (without sweetener) like caramel or hazelnut or biscotti… which is a huge reason I got a Keurig -I just don’t tend to see those flavours outside of k-cups! But the environmental impact makes me feel awful… just curious if you had any insights or advice around that, given your shift! Thank you!

Oh, I totally relate to buying shoes for my "fantasy self". Impractical shoes have to be the biggest category of my regretful purchases in the past 15 or so years. I'm really glad I've moved on from that, but it's an easy trap to fall into!

I fell down at a concert once and was nearly trampled; my shoes weren’t the reason I fell, but I’ve made VERY conscious decisions around footwear since that experience. If I can’t run or be agile and nimble in my shoes, my real self and my fantasy self are happy to walk away. It’s an extreme example, but a huge mindset shift. I used to be all about “fashion shoes” - now it’s running shoes and Doc Martins or winter boots, and very little else. (cuts down so many impulse shoe purchases and leaves so much room in the closet, too!)

Mouthwash is an interesing one. I've not used it for many years as my dentist said it was unnecessary. Then I've started again for whatever reason and I do not get cavities anymore. Otherwise I didn't change anything in terms of how I brush my teeth (but am constantly researching ways how to do it better). I used to have like 4 per year on average before. I use normal & interdental brushes, plus flossing and tuft brush daily, now also finishing with mouthwash.

Hair oil is so trueeeee, my hair is very fine, sometimes dry but oil is just too much but the smell and sensory experience is actually nice ! Not easy.
2024 I don’t want to buy any make up products unless I run out of a category!
Planners: I have one blanco for thoughts and goals and an app for everything else. This works fine for me :)

I didn’t like matcha either, and I can’t wait to finish my tiny jar. What really took my coffee to a new level is buying freshly roasted coffee beans from the coffee roasters. There’s one in Canada that I really like - 49th parallel. Now I just drink black coffee without anything in addition, and I love it. Good coffee beans are definitely more expensive, but are so worth it to me.

I’m so with you for hair oil. I have fine, oily hair/oily scalp. I tried “training” my hair and scalp, did no heat treating and sulfates for years. Had oily, oily, stringy hair that was very shiny and strong. Hated it. Now, I blow dry it and I can finally shower every other day because my hair is dried out 😂 goodbye, glossy hair, hello not-stringy hair for me!

No nail polish! I was good this year and only bought around 10 (yes that’s good for me 😂) but I won’t need a single shade next year. Also zero pairs of shoes. I’m sure there are other things, but those two are super obvious for me.

Just trying to minimize my makeup collection-have too many lip products i just dont use like lipsticks when I mostly use clear or colored lip balm. Always want to buy highlighters but I rarely use them. Any type of cream/liquid blush think ill wait til next year once im done with ones i have. Come to realize i prob only need to keep one in my collection since i dont use them everyday. Hair oils are one thing i have to keep at least one (mostly from gifts) my hair is a bit oily but dry on ends so it helps alot to avoid getting tangled.

As an MD, the easiest simplest skin care routine is 1. vitamin C in the morning 2. Moisturizer with sunscreen (I like Cerave SPF 30 or Elta MD UV clear) and 3. a retinoid at night. 3 things. That's it. Good for you for realizing too many steps just aren't going to happen for you.

Hi Shawna! For 2024 I’m not going to buy any jewelry- which includes pins and cute buttons. I actually don’t buy much of anything but I also don’t use much of anything either! Why I have seven pairs of earrings when I wear the same studs every day is beyond me. I’m hoping to declutter more of my fantasy self next year… like my super cute but honestly painful heels that get virtually no usage! Can I ask what do you do for a living? I thought this channel was your full time job but it seems like that isn’t the case. Also have you done a house tour? I love seeing minimalist homes … such great inspiration! Thanks for making great videos!

I’m not buying hair oil either. I have some but I cut my hair to a pixie. It was WAY too short. Really the only hair products I need next year are replacing shampoo/conditioner, dry shampoo, and my dry texturizing spray. That’s it. I rarely use anything else. I’m growing the pixie out so once it’s long enough I’ll work on using up the oil I have. After that I may never buy more, or maybe only small sizes since a little goes such a long way.

I don’t want to assume what your future plans are. I will just say, that when I was pregnant, my feet got bigger. Also, around 40, I started having foot pain and had to get rid of all my shoes and replace them. So, I would advise not to think of shoes as a long term item. Buy them if you will wear them this month. Otherwise, buy them when it is the correct season of life later.

I stopped buying office supplies years ago. I used to love to buy pens and pencils etc. It just tickled my fancy for some reason. Now, i just keep 1 pencil bag filled with nice pens and pencils and that is it.
I was struggling to think of things that I can commit to not buying for 2024, but I think I can realistically say no to:
Blush and bronzer (I simply have plenty)
Makeup brushes (I did upgrade my brushes and I ordered a few extras in a style I recently discovered I really enjoyed. I should be set for 2024 for sure.)
Lipstick (I own 5 or 6 and never wear it. They should be good through the coming year. I have considered just buying lipstick instead of blush in the future though. I rarely wear either. It looks good when you do wear blush if it matches your lip though and I appreciate the dual function. Also, if it looks good on your lips it will probably look good on your cheeks.)
Areas I'm not agreeing to cut myself off from, but that I do want to set some limits on:
Eyeshadow palettes (Eyeshadow is my favorite makeup product. I enjoy it and wear it every time I put makeup on. That said, it does expire and I really do have plenty of it. So 6 new palettes in 2024 max but I'd like it to be more like 3 or 4 for the year)
Gaming dice (I started ceeating groupings for specific characters and that really has helped me cut my spending down. It's like a dice shop my stash for my character. I buy more 6 sided dice for yahtzee than RPG dice these days. Our local gaming store produces sets in new colors every few months. They do get used. I enjoy them. It's not a huge expense. It's supporting a small business. New RPG dice sets aren't really necessary for me, and I switch them out so infrequently these days that just a few sets for the year would suffice. Who knows. Maybe I actually won't buy any.
Cardigans and hoodies (I love cardigans and hoodies. If I do buy any, though, I need to do a 1 in, 1 out system. I simply don't have the closet space to keep getting more without cutting out others from my wardrobe. There are some cardigans that I own though that I rarely wear and wouldn't be sad to see go.)

It’s a temporary fix but is ultimately making it worse in the long run. It’s become well known in the dental community that it kills the micro biome of the mouth and can affect your health. I would research it more and talk to them again. Dentist sometimes just like the health system can be behind the times/ I would get to the root of it, maybe look at your gut health and overall health. Maybe probiotics.

Don't start me with these skin care routine products... I'm 45 and I have been hearing about them all my life... All my friends and acquaintances that used or use them look at least 10 years older than their age, while I - the black sheep that refused to make the effort - hardly look my age. DON'T! Just don't use them! Unless you have a specific skin condition and you have visited a dermatologist, all these skin products are completely unnecessary. Follow a healthy lifestyle and your skin will look at its best for longer! Nothing extreme is required: drink enough water, don't smoke, don't do drugs, sleep enough, don't go crazy on sugar and fatty foods, avoid prolonged stay in the sun or wear a good sun protection, avoid daily heavy makeup if possibly, make sure you de-makeup every day, use a good moisterizer when your skin feels dry...and YOUR SKIN WILL THANK YOU! I really don't see why people pay a ton of money to use stuff they don't need (because the body does the work itself when healthy)! The more stuff you put on your skin the more you disturb your body's natural skin balance and the less you let your skin breathe.... I suppose each to their own.I'm not here to tell anyone what to do, but I speak from experience and I don't have any reason to talk anyone into buying anything, so I can tell my honest truth. :)
I love your content. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences! xx

Girl that’s genetics 😂 I’m only 31 and I have desert dry skin and deep forehead wrinkles that are only helped by retinol and vit c. I’m happy for you that you look younger without skincare, but that’s not most people’s reality. My mom does nothing and she looks 10 years older than she is and she’s never smoked and stays out of the sun 😂 I’m trying to fight it.

    • @kleri1403

@@thejulietocean Well, you are right...part of it is genetics and nutrition and the climate..and yes, there are people who have issues with their skin and need to use these products. I'm not against using skincare altogether. I was talking about all these young girls that have fine skin and choose to use a ton of stuff (heavy make up to cover the non-existent faults, fake tan, creams and serums etc for wrinkles they don't even have yet..). Some argue that this is the way to prevent things from happening...I think it is us being brainwashed by marketing...and my approach is "if it is not broken, don't try to fix it!". I'm happy that you have found some products that work for you. xx
