    I learned that all of these things actually take up space and I don't have all the storage space in the world, so the products that I do decide to add to my collection have to be good and no impulse purchases. Pluuuuus I learned how much money I actually spent on all of this and that I better get my money's worth out of them looool

    One thing I’ve learned that is more about buying than panning, but has still been helpful: paying more attention to individual shades in palettes before I buy. Specifically, I don’t like dark shimmers. I just don’t use them. So when I’m looking at a palette that catches my eye, I try to look at the shimmers and see how many are dark, as those are a total waste to me. Realizing 40% of a palette I thought I liked has shades I just won’t use has stopped me from buying so much, and helped me realize why I wasn’t using some of the palettes I owned.

    • @justsiobhan1658

      I feel the same darktoned shimmers arent my thing and fushia pinks make me look ill, i have tried numerous times to make those types of colour work...it is not happening! Lol now i can can avoid those buying mistakes!

      I feel the same way except the bane of my existence is nude neutrals, especially the warm ones. Virtually every palette these days that has a theme of dark or vibrant has to come with at least 50%, if not more, of nudes. And it's already bad enough when the remaining 30% of shades are absolutely gorgeous, but it gets worse when I can't get single eyeshadows. Single eyeshadows are almost non existent these days- catrice and essence have a very limited selection for example, and Nux discontinued theirs. I am sick of paying so much money for five eyeshadows I'll wear when I'll eventually have to throw away 7 full pans because a)I don't wear those warm nudes b)I have a million of them leftover in other palettes and c)my friends are just as freaky as I am and won't be caught dead wearing those shades either

    Hi Sarah! When you talk about not being ashamed of liking makeup, and having it as a hobby - I completely agree with that. Of course I believe we should be mindful consumers in every aspect of our lives, but to make a comparison to some hobbies considered "less girly" (as we know society tends to think less of traditionally feminine activities):
    - Someone that likes woodworking. Are they going to use up every single bit of paint, thinner, glue etc before it dries down? What about the scraps of material, the used sandpaper etc? Do they feel bad about that "waste"?
    - Someone that enjoys figurines/miniatures - all of that is, like makeup packaging, also made out of plastic, rubber etc. Are people shaming them for their collection?
    So I agree - let's openly enjoy makeup - it's something that I do almost every single day of my life, that brings me joy and peace of mind. All of that to say I won't feel too bad for owning more blushes than I can use up.

    • @Alex-kn3dg
      @Alex-kn3dg Před 2 lety +16

      I relate a lot to this! I’m so ashamed That makeup is a passion of mine and feel guilty for the waste.. but there are things that are much worse and I need to let myself live lol

      @@Alex-kn3dg Yes! I feel that as long as we are not letting a hobby take over our lives - for example using up life savings to purchase makeup - or buying harmful counterfeit produtcs, it should be fine to enjoy something that makes us happy!

      YES!! I’ve been thinking the same things for a while now. Of course it’s a nuanced topic, but I do think there’s a bit of misogyny woven into some of the shaming of owning more makeup than one can use up.

    I've learned how long it actually takes to use up makeup. I've also learned how versatile some makeup can be, and that I don't need 15 different shades of pink blush because I can get the same effect from 1 or 2. I think the hardest lesson was to stop panning things I wasn't really enjoying because the urge to use them up to get them out of my collection was strong; I had to remind myself that I'd rather be spending my time using up the products I loved. And I have occasionally fallen totally in love with a product through panning it.

  • @R.L.Maverick
    @R.L.Maverick Před 2 lety +36

    I have taken a new approach in that I purposely try to pan or get more usage out of my most expensive products first. That isn’t to say I don’t reach for the less expensive items. Also, while I completely value your opinion and experience with panning, and agree that we shouldn’t make ourselves miserable…what I have found for myself is that by making myself use up less desirable products I have become much more selective in what I purchase. However, if I truly dislike something or it just does not work for me after using all your awesome tips for repurposing items, I declutter it immediately and I don’t look back. Great discussion!! I value your videos and outlook!!! 😀

  • @agingophelia9812
    @agingophelia9812 Před 2 lety +27

    Right on! Knowing I will never realistically use up most of my makeup, I'm on long-term low buy & I'm fine with that; as long as I enjoy my stash and use it regularly, I can allow myself to purchase something special once in a while. For me panning is mostly about rotating through, not using up, although in my time I've used plenty of color cosmetics as well as the easier to pan base products.

  • @jessicalevy2415
    @jessicalevy2415 Před 2 lety +25

    I totally agree with knowing/cultivating what you like being key to a collection that works for you. Sometimes I have to remind myself that the reason I don't have that color lipstick or whatever in my collection is because I've tried 3 different ones in the past and I know it never works out!

  • @gasparinha
    @gasparinha Před 2 lety +13

    Agree with all of these! I like to think of the cost of makeup per use, or amortized over its lifetime. If I have an eyeshadow palette for three years, and it cost $50, that's $1.39/month. I rotate my palettes weekly, so if I have ten palettes, I'd use that $50 palette about 109 times, or 46 cents per use. Much harder to feel guilty about that!
    I have also "hate-panned" on multiple occasions, and it always leaves me frustrated. You already spent the money - no point in torturing yourself further.

    I've also recently learned it's okay to not finish everything. I have a foundation right now that I hate, but I do have a way to make it work. However, it would take forever to use up. So instead of making myself miserable, I put it in my donate box and I'm looking to buy a new foundation.

  • @943862

    The thing I've learned from my project pans is, if I don't love a product as much as I want to use it up, I can mix it up with some other products that are being neglected and create a stunning formula. For instance, I tried to finish my The Balm Plump Your Pocker lipglosses which I found too watery, lacking pigmentation and shine. Yet I was loving the three colours that I had. Then, I mixed them with the Physicians Formula Healthy Lips liquid lipstick in the shade Bare With me, and bingo! I came up with three glossy liquid lipsticks that are suitable for most of my makeup looks! I'm using and enjoying them now, besides the p.f. liquid lipstick is saved from being neglected :) One of them is already finished, and I'm halfway done with the second shade. The good thing is when I finished my project, I'll be using up 4 lip productcs with a great joy :)

    Totally agree with everything you said. I‘ve only been project panning for less than a year, but it has changed my mindset so much already, especially when it comes to buying new products. I’m so much more thoughtful now, do a lot of research on every product I’m considering buying and really evaluate if I really „need“ and want to commit to it for as long as it takes to use up. 🙌🏻 project panning really is life-changing when it comes to makeup consumption

    I've come to find out that I only like watching "Empties" videos if they're talking about makeup. Since most of those types of videos mainly consist of skincare I tend to avoid them. Having said that, I agree.. empty videos are a great way to get a thorough review of makeup. I wish there were more if them, but I understand that since it takes so long to finish a makeup product they'll be few and far in between.

    I just came to realize the other day that panning a product, although satisfying, does not mean I am wasting less products. Most people, myself included, already own way too much makeup to being with. Let say you own a total of 10 blushes. If you only use up 1 blush a year, that still mean you are wasting 9 in total, no matter how you divide it between the 10 blushes you own. The amount of makeup you can use is set and panning a product does not make you use them up sooner. What is more important, is to curate a collect of makeup that give you options, instead of owning 10 of the same product in the same shade.

    I started panning and shop my stash projects this year thanks to your videos and some other creators and I'm loving it! I wanted to focus more on what I have and not buy so much. Thank you so much for all your tips and sharing what you've learnt so far. I think what you say about not being ashamed of the amount of makeup you own and making it fun is the key question, even if you've had bad habits of spending too much, like I've done sometimes, shaming yourself is not gonna help.
    I've learnt that for me the most important thing is not to finish products, although it's extremely satisfying, but to make sure that all the items in my collection are loved, that's why with most products I'm focusing on usage goals and not necessarily on finishing them up. I've also learnt a bit more about my preferences, and like you were saying to truly get to know a product, so you can decide if it's something you want to keep around or not. It's also pushed me to be more creative and use my makeup in different ways. And best lessons, all your lipsticks are also blushes!

    I have learned through panning that I’m pretty light handed with my products and also that I don’t/can’t wear makeup every day (more like 3-4 days a week) so my panning takes even longer than others and not to compare my usage to someone who uses makeup 6-7 days a week.

    I have realized that owning multiple of the same shade is not smart for me. Chances are I'm not going to finish 3 different blushes that are all the same exact same shade, that would literally take over 5 years of every single day use and by then they are old and chances are I want to use a different shade or am bored of it. So I don't buy dupe colors now. I also realize how long it takes me to use things up so I don't need 2 back ups. A lot of things I use 1 of until its gone then move on to another one, like everything except colored cosmetics. So I don't need a ton of them as back ups

    I use up most of my makeup. When I buy something new, I keep it on a shelf with the receipt, and I use it on and off for a month. If it ends up being something that repeatedly doesn't work, then I return it. No guilt. Also, if something is worn seasonally, and it is no longer available when the season comes up, I throw it out, or recycle the container. Most of the containers are recyclable. Again, no guilt. Don't feel guilty. Life is too short.

    Hi Sarah, What do you do with the makeup you have used several times and don't like it? For example I purchased the too faced shadow insurance eye primer and I really don't like it at all. I like the milani one better and want to go back to it. Thank you!

      Have you tried setting the primer with a skin-toned shadow first? That helped me use up my TF eye primer.

      I have a video on ways to rehome makeup! czcams.com/video/9mpwe7_e7GU/video.html
      Hope that helps!

      @@MsCarterElise Yes, I have the new TF Primer with the wand and hardly anything comes out. It's a pain to use...I guess I like the squeeze tubes better.

      @@ts1358 I just looked it up - I didn’t realize they changed the packaging! I can see how that would be annoying.

      @@MsCarterElise Yes it is! I know UD has a wand applicator but at least it is in a squeeze tube.

    Such thoughtful insights! Panning is not for me - although of course it’s fun to finish a bronzer etc. I like doing a makeup basket style where I swap I. Whatever I’m enjoying at the moment!
