When I first heard Bob Marley….I wanted to know who he was and what kind of music he was singing! When I was told who what and why I was instantly in love! That reggae hit me hard my sister and I must have listened to the album many many times it sounded better each time! Love him miss him!

I think Bob Marley is like the situation you described with The Beatles, where he’s such an icon that you know who he is, but not everyone that knows who he is knows his music. Dive deeper, so worth it. You can listen to him back to back to back and just enjoy the ride.

Bob Marley brought reggae into the mainstream and was hugely influential. Without Marley, there's no Police, no Clash, or so many other artists he influenced. Not only did he have a gift for melody, he was also a prophet.

That is absolutely correct. Peter Tosh taught Bob Marley how to play guitar. Bob, Peter, and Bunny also owe a lot of credit to Joe Higgs. He taught them how to orchestrate in the 60’s in a yard in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica where they went on to create hits on that island for years before hitting the international scene.
Redemption Song is worth a look... Powerful song..
"Redemption Song" is hands down his best! "One Love" is one that most people recognize once they hear it. "No Woman, No Cry" is also another great one. Honestly there isn't a single song of his that I don't love. My mom once got me a boxed set of all of his albums on CD. BEST MOM EVER! :)

pretty much ANY song by Bob Marley is gonna be good. i grew up with I Shot The Sheriff playing on the radio in the 70s, but it wasn't until the 90s that i really listened to more of his songs and just fell in love with him.❤💛💚

Desmond Dekker is a beloved, early star of this genre. "Iseralites", "007 Shanty Town", "It Mek", "Sabotage"
My fave artist of all time. He was huge down here in Aotearoa(New Zealand) since the 1970s when indigenous Māori and also Pasifika people took him in as one of their own. Great lyrics and the Wailers behind him showcase his talent to the world. We call him “Uncle Bob” down here.

My uncle calls him "Pareng Bob" literally translates to either "Friend" or the "Godfather of your kids", which kinda makes sense because he used Bob's tracks as a lullaby when me and my cousins were kids.
How did you both have a UNIVERSITY experience and not find Bob Marley. Owning a copy of LEGEND is like the ultimate college/university right of passage.

I still haven't seen you do No woman No cry. Do that one next. His most popular is No Woman No Cry. Get Bob Marley LEGEND album that's a greatest hits and it's incredible.

What sounds like a lead guitar is actually a clavinet which is a keyboard instrument played using wah wah pedals. It was played by session musician John "rabbit" bundrick who has also played with the Who live. Stir it up is from the first Wailers album called catch a fire and session musicians like rabbit were brought in to add a "rock" feel to the songs so that Bob and the wailers could cross over to the "white" rock Market at the time. Boy, did it work!!

Jay and Amber, Bob's music and writing partner, Peter Tosh is well worth looking into. He was famous for singing the famous Get Up Stand Up with Bob. Coming In Hot, Pick Myself Up, Crystal Ball, I'm The Toughest are among some of his tastiest mellow tunes.
I remember hearing this single in 1972 not by Bob Marley but by Johnny Nash, whose first single, I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW was a huge smash. I read in an article that he had worked with Bob Marley and recorded his version based on the Marley track.
I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW is a song you should absolutely checkout. His clear soaring vocal is inspirational. Enjoy.

"No Woman, No Cry" (but the live version, not the studio version) and "Redemption Song" (the acoustic version, definitely) are two of the greatest songs from anyone. Marley's voice and the lyrics will have you listening to both over and over. You already know what his voice can do with such an apparently simple song like "Three Lil Birds".

Bob Marley was one of those artists who's raw creativity. lyrical content and purity makes his music timeless....there aren't many but he's definitely one of them. You really can't go wrong - another artist taken too soon, who left such a massive void in his absence....one of the greatest - I Shot the Sheriff, Redemption Song, Exodus, Jammin', etc...

Bob Marley will be tough since every single song is a hit
Bob is one of the greatest influences in my life. As a person from the Caribbean, he has shaped much of our culture. Yes he has love songs, but his revolutionary tracks are what influenced our behavior. Peter Tosh was on this track as well on guitar. A big contribution to the sound of the Wailers.
Jammin, from 1964, and Redemption Song, from around 1970, are the most iconic amongst Marley's long list of hit songs. Reggae musicians have unanimously honoured Marley as the greatest exponent of the genre. I'd like to hear more of other Reggae influenced music, such as from Police, UB40, and Jimmy Cliff.
Jimmy Cliff's Many Rivers to Cross is such a great listen.

This song gave me a good idea for you for movie reaction day. It’s called “Cool Runnings”. It’s loosely based on the Jamaican Bobsled team that went to the Winter Olympics years ago. Redemption song! I had the pleasure of seeing Bob's concert at crystal Palace London, burnt in my heart forever! It was sadly his last concert in England, he died of cancer at the young age of 36 😔 he was a ball of pure energy and love on stage so many songs to listen to .Thanks guys xx

I actually met him in 1980, very humble man. I recently made a mix of his tunes, it ended up being almost 4hrs. The weird thing is though, I sang along word for word for most of them. Its like he seeps into your dna.

You should also check out Dennis Brown. Bob Marley dubbed him the 'crown prince of reggae'. He started in when he was around 14. 'Money in my Pocket', 'How Could I Leave' and 'If This World Were Mine' are good places to start.

So true story, this song popped in my head today at work and I listened to it on repeat all morning. But it was Johnny Nash’s version. I just love that one - still with a reggae vibe but mixed with a hint of R&B too. And Johnny Nash’s voice is like silk - I hadn’t heard it in years and today I realized just how great his voice really was.

I think Bob Marley must have been one of those musicians that let fans record and share their music, because there are a lot of bootlegs of his concerts out there. He was amazing live!! They stretch out some of those grooves and solos, and really take you away.
I'm watching Marley playing in Germany on utube to a huge crowd. They're doing "Get, Up, Stand Up" . And for a moment, the camera freezes on Marley as he's throwing his head back, tossing his dreads. And I think, "That is one iconic shot...with the lights giving him an aura, he looked like what he was..a God to the people of Jamacia."
I have bought 10 copies of Legend over the years. Every time I meet someone who has never heard of him(!), i give them my copy and buy another one.

I hadn't heard this in ages! Please hit "No Woman, No Cry" as it's my favorite Marley and has some special meaning to me because of our dog, Grendel. If she got scared or in trouble she'd run to Daddy and want me to sing "No Grendel, No Cry" to chase the doggo blues away. She's long gone to the Rainbow Bridge but the song always fills the room with her presence.

Bob Marley started his career in the 50's w/ his band, The Wailers - they featured Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh... both left the band in the early 70's when the band came to the UK, after being established in Jamaica. Bob Marley worked the scene in Europe, then N. America and built his fame from the ground up, even playing Africa... His cancer diagnosis in 1980 and death in 1981 was a huge loss... His songs had been covered by legends like Eric Clapton, Nina Simone, & Stevie Wonder.
The one record that makes everyone's collection is "Legend: the best of Bob Marley" ... which was released in 1984 after Marley passed away. It had his best material from his 70's career, and has sold over 15 million copies in the US alone, over 25 million globally. It had all his major hits ("Is this love"... 'Buffalo soldier'... 'No woman no cry'... 'One love'... 'Redemption song'... etc.)
His former bandmate Peter Tosh also launched a successful solo career as a reggae artist in the 70's... Tragically, he was murdered in 1987, just before he could release his last album 'No nuclear war'... Peter Tosh's big hits include: 'Na goa jail'... 'Bush doctor'... 'Johnny B. Goode' (Chuck Berry cover)... 'Coming in hot'... 'Not gonna give it up'... 'Maga dog'... 🔥🔥

Great reaction! Everyone has a lot of great suggestions and I saw Redemption Song a few times, there are two versions, one with the band and one is just an acoustic guitar. I like the acoustic version better but both are great! I also like Three Little Birds. Eddie Murphy did a bit on Saturday Night Live where he played the lead singer of a Reggae band playing at a VFW hall and the audience is old white men and Eddie starts singing a song called Kill The White People (But Buy My Record First) and it is so funny! He also played James Brown in a skit called Hot Time in the Hot Tub! The best though is where he does a skit where Buckwheat from the L’il Rascals put out a Christmas album called Buh-wheet Sings!

Love Marley (and I'm sure I'll get hate for this) but I prefer Johnny Nash's version. I think because it was the first version I heard, as a kid, and it had a real impact.
