Kumartuli, a neighborhood in Kolkata, India holds an important place in history which has a long tradition of clay idol-making along with a strong association with the most important festival of Bengal - Durga Puja.
It is located in north Kolkata along the river of the River Hooghly, Kumortuli (also spelt Kumartuli, or the archaic spelling Coomartolly) is a traditional potters’quarters.The city is famous as a sculpting hot-spot which not only manufactures clay idols for various festivals but also regularly exports them.
The potters of Kumortuli, who fashioned the clay from the river beside their home into pots to be sold at Sutanuti Bazar managed to survive in the area. Gradually they took to making the images of gods and goddesses, worshipped in large numbers in the mansions all around and later at community pujas in the city and beyond .
Kumortuli is located mostly between Rabindra Sarani (formerly Chitpur Road) and the Hooghly River. It is between Ahiritola and Shobhabazar.
The settlement of Kumartuli, meaning "potter locality" (Kumar = potters and Tuli = locality), is over 300 years old. It was formed by a bunch of potters who came to the area in search of a better livelihood. Nowadays, around 150 families live here and earning a living by sculpting idols for the various festivals. In the lead up to Durga Puja, thousands of artisans (many who are hired from other areas) toil diligently in approximately 550 workshops to complete the idols of Durga in time for the festival.
The artisans live here with their families and have set up their own studios for pottery and idol making. Their studios are in congested areas with no proper ventilation and with the small windows which refuse the daylight to enter. As for equipment and materials, they have clay, straw, ropes (made from coconut fiber), bamboo sticks and two skillful hands that can transform the shapeless mound of clay into a beautiful and awe inspiring idol of goddess Durga.
As we made our way down the alley, I was amazed to see half-done idols with a variety of size and features, comprising of large, small, and medium; with traditional wide-eyed face revealing anger, or with a soft compassionate look more like a simple, native Bengali beauty; posing like warrior against the demons or blessing like a mother.
• Kumartuli is in North Kolkata. The main location is Banamali Sarkar Street.
• The nearest railway station is the Sovabazar Metro. Sovabazar Launch Ghat (alongside the Ganges river) is also close by.
• Idol making for various festivals happens mostly from June to January. Of course, the biggest occasion is Durga Puja.
If you love art, then you should not miss visiting Kumartuli. But regardless, it's a place that offers an unique dose of culture.
Intangible cultural Spirit of Durga Puja
Heritage is multifaceted and comprises built heritage, natural heritage, cultural heritage, and the list goes on. It is also important to understand that built heritage is not discreet rather it is manifestation of the faith, belief and cultural practices of any particular society. The blend of tangible cultural heritage or built heritage and intangible cultural heritage builds an identity of a place which is unique and significant.
The art of idol making is a unique and requires creative imagination skills with a long process. It is an important part of cultural practices for any culture and cannot exist without the tangible component.
we can classify the process of idol making broadly into three stages:
• Making the framework out of bamboo and dried straw twining them to render the basic shape of the structure.
• Making of the clay images and putting the paints in the process mentioned above.
• Decorating the clay images.
Today, these activities are still practiced during the process of idol making at Kumartuli. The livelihood of people associated with this dependent on this. But unfortunately, the lack of basic amenities, poor infrastructure and the lack of free space are some of the major issues faced by these artisans in Kumartuli. The lanes or streets are very narrow because these are occupied by newly constructed idols as the space inside the so called Studios/workshops isn’t enough.
