I read a lot about a lot of topics. And I've figured something out: I'm a real dumb dumb. But that's a good thing. In this episode I look at something called the Dunning-Kruger Effect (and graph) and break down why innovation, technology, science and the future are built on the back of not knowing stuff. Feel like you've got Imposter Syndrome? Not as smart as others? Watch this video...

You're Dumber Than You Think (That's A Good Thing)
Key Words
Imposter syndrome, dunning-kruger, how to study, how to be smarter, why am I so dumb?

I lied and still got applause: DOGS are better than CATS!
Join the discord to argue with me: discord.gg/9cMaDbBURA
Noooo
Cats are better than dogs
Dogs are wolves but weaker and uglier cats are tigers but just as fierce and cuter take your pick if you choose dog your so dumb you cant concive how dumb you are.
Cool that you have a discord server now. It’s amazing to see how much your community has grown in the past few years
Nooooo cat good she cute
joke's on you, i'm already aware that i am, in fact, very dumb 😎
Well well well, welcome to the Valley of Despair, next stop: remaining dumb because that slope looks steep
Mm
My son came to the dinner table last night and told me with full confidence about Dunning-Krueger, I said, wow, you sound pretty confident about all that, did you just start reading about that? *beat* oh!
Oh damn haha! You win.
if i'm dumber than I think I am i'm screwed
Wow, thanks, Tom 🥺😭😩
I warned everyone that I was about to offend some people...
I think the peak of mount stupid is also a reason why all those "it took this guy 10 minutes to explain what my teacher did in a year" comments exist. The explaining in most educational entertainers' videos is a surface level understanding, but because peak of mount stupid and very experienced are on about the same level of confidence you don't realise how much more you learned at school/uni.
*Thanks for reminding me about something I get reminded everyday*
That's ok 😍
Oh, you've met my wife then?
@@likebot. Yes, and have done more than just meeting her
@@shinchanthebest My condolences, then.
1:45 I love the stock footage of "Lady circling numbers and chalk breaks but she pretends everything is normal" That was really the stand out clip
Right!? Haha I had to use it after finding that gem
"Last year, when doomscrolling was a thing"
Me: starts sweating 😅
I loved the editing and the way you integrated Storyblocks so naturally : )
Great vid and smooth integration of the axe and bison ;)
Ahh the Dunning-Kruger effect...even when you think you do know, you don't.
That’s pretty much it. Both depressing and empowering.
Doesn't this remind you of high school, when you're coming out of an exam and the smart kid thinks they did poorly, and you think you aced the exam. But in reality you over estimated your performance, whilst the kid who knew what they were doing totally underestimated their performance.
Also, that thing about going from high school to university is a feeling almost everyone goes through - big fish, small pond (Except the kid, who is always the smartest person in any room). Can you imagine being the smartest kid at your school and then going to a college like Harvard, and you're the dumbest person there LOL.
Haha yep! Like I performed well academically all my life and then at uni I was just....fine
2:02 literally me learning fluid mechanics last semester 😂😂
"All that I know is that I know nothing" - Socrates.
Taken literally, this statement is paradoxical. Knowing that one knows nothing is knowing something... However, viewed more metaphorically in the context of the message of this video, it makes perfect sense!
Fantastic video, Tom! I personally think this is your best video yet!
I didn't realize how much I missed different camera angles in these kinds of videos. Very well done.
Great video - I think more people should know about this! The valley is a very inspiring place. It's a hope that you can learn so much more. That there is a much more exciting journey ahead!
Jeez... you don't have to tell me twice...
But for those who reading this, have a great weekend! :D
Thanks!
Just found this channel, never been interested in this stuff but the video quality and editing is class, got a new sub
Great video! Literally going through this right now with my first job out of school and realizing I don't know nearly as much as I thought. Working on embracing the valley of despair and learning as much as possible.
Good luck. Hope you are feeling better a year later, bud
Thanks man.
Really needed that encouragement.
Anyways great video lol
Fantastic vid! I think I can relate:
I started learning Japanese two months ago on Duolingo. It was amazing at first, I learned an entire new alphabet (Hiragana) and even some words and phrases. I hit the peak of mount stupid when I finished the second phonetic alphabet (Katakana) and felt like a champ. Then I fell hard into the valley of despair when I learned that there are over 2000 unique characters that represent words (Kanji). That sucked. There is SO much I don't know. Is it even worth continuing?
Instead of giving up I started taking Japanese 101 at my university, and these days I'm slowly climbing my way up the slope of enlightenment!
"Being weak (or stupid) is nothing to be ashamed of. However, staying weak is!" - I think Black Clover?
I look forward to learning more with ya'll:

Great video, Tom! I think it's safe to say that this experiment was a triumph! Complete success!
you're vids are always pog
I learned what Pog means the other day, am I Internet Folk now?
@@TommoCarroll One of us... One of us ONE OF US
@@TommoCarroll yes haha 👍👍
Blows my mind that your channel is still so small! Love this "experiment". I think it makes it feel more personable and less... scripted? Either way keep it up man :)
Great video , More people need to hear this 🙌
0:02, my teacher when I get a math problem wrong
Now I know everything there is to know about Dunning and Kruger! Thanks.
Over 50% of drivers think they are better at driving than the average driver.
Yes, that's how stats work.
There needs to be some ideology that everyone follows that teaches humility. Not calling oneself "stupid" or worse and hating oneself but starting at "I know nothing [probably] so I need to do some in depth learning and listening rather than spouting my mouth off on the latest news." We get the pleasure by being buoyed by others with a similar knowledge base. We are being **emotionally** supported, we need to know that it is simple emotions not knowledge or wisdom just because we **feel** better.
I agree completely!
the worst part was studying this for the MCAT then realizing "oh shit I'm not ready to be a doc"
In the words if my very passionate maths teacher: pride is bullshit
He just described my entire existence in the first 5 seconds of the video
Keepin it real, nice
Great video, it really hit me! I am about to change my path of work and being humble certainly doesn‘t hurt 😉 - but being confident about what I really know neither. But the real challenge is probably to know them apart 😱😳😊!
That is 100% the biggest challenge! Good luck or your new journey Stefan, I’m rooting for ya!
I love your video editing , which softwares do you use man ...
Your content is like big media companies like vox ...that really defines your top notch content quality .....I'm a beginner youtube creator , plz guide about this editing stuff
Plz reply mr tom
Dude great respect
"Your dumber than you think"
Yoooooo im in the negative IQ
And this, kids, is how you DO SPONSORSHIP.
So stoked you liked how I did that!
This video was an excuse for the audience to hear “schtewpid” over and over
I am such an expert on the Dunning-Kruger effect
TIL the name of the effect I experience while learning a second language
Welcome to the Valley...
true tho. I find myself being too confident at times
Me dumb... thanks Tom.
dum dum give me gum gum
Actually such an underrated film...
Better than I expected, but grossly underused Robin Williams.
I already know I am dumb. There was a period in my life where I thought because I was a straight-A student, I was super smart, then looking back I realize how much I didn't know and still don't.
Learning how to surf I remember thinking “man I’m getting pretty good.” Then I got a little better and realized how bad really was lol. Dunning-Kruger got me pretty good there for a minute
I’m out of the pit of despair in surfing but not in rocket league haha
lots of people will finish the video sitting on mount stupid about the Dunning-Kruger Effect but think otherwise 😔
:axe: See y'all in the tribe that totally isn't a cult!
"I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing and that is, that I know nothing,"
~Socrates
You got an awful lot of confidence in your understanding of the Dunning-Kruger Effect there, Tom.
I may have even spelt Kruger wrong :/
Just checked. I DID NOT.
I'm still falling down to the valley of despair...havet reached the bottom yet. Can't wait for the climb up in 30 years.
Well I’m screwed.
Been living in valley of despair for 20 years now 👍
Reading more make you understand how little you know. I've experienced that, many times
I only know that I know nothing... and this quote which makes me seem smarter.
Tom I think you need to add ““ to the link the description :)
Now I'm questioning my own existence 😎
Assume that you know nothing about anything and you’ll start to question more which will lead to you making better conclusions and decisions
Nice demonstration at 5:30; rockets like we have never seen before like Falcon 9 baing able to land - well... 1990s man - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_DC-X
I know I know. I’ve seen this counter argument a lot. But didn’t that prototype not even make it to LEO? Falcon 9 is an absolute workhorse, sending multiple payloads including humans to LEO, landing successfully *most* of the time and being reusable and doing it again. It’s a different beast altogether
My parents when I get a B is school 0:00
Philosophical, I like it.
Cool video tom i love it ❤️😍
I have the delusion that my graph is a straight line with no Mount Stupid to ski from. On the other hand, even though I know I'm kinda uneducated in a thousand topics, it might be true that I'm stuck on a thousand Mount Stupid summits. Boy-o-boy I wish I could be certain that I did a quantum tunnelling trick and am actually at the valley of dispair without having spent my life on that vista of self-confident arrogance.
Tom if youtube doesn't work out, you can always have an acting career haha
I can't be dumber, its literally impossible
Indeed; i am stupid, but i didnt think its possible to be so stupid that you blind yourself to your own stupidity. Oh god ive said the word so much its losing its meaning ;-;.
RIGHT? I geninely got scared when I read that....
@@TommoCarroll as you should *insert gun emoji here*
Says the guy who calls basic farming an “infinite food glitch”
chemistry.
I realize more and more everyday that I don't know ANYTHING
Tom looks like the guy who would tell himself that he's dumb even tho he's smart and good looking and all the other kids want to be him
The thing that got me here is the accent
Ironically, the research by Dunning and Kruger is actually not as clear cut as it is often represented, and there is specifically not really a "valley of despair". I recommend reading this article about the meta-Duning-Kruger effect, i.e. how many people believe they completely understand this research, despite only having read about it a little bit:
blog.kazitor.com/2019/12/meta-dunning-kruger-effect/
I want to be an electrical engineer...So no its not good that im stupid. Barely understand basic maths, and Im not very technical, so life is gonna be a wash when you cant do what you want to do...Specifically im fascinated by SOC architecture, so amazing work they do...To have devices that we have today feels alien, its insane.
Hey man, if you're interested in it and want to put in the work, you should definitely do it.
Math always has been my worst subject in school, I'm now in last year of Electrical Engineering and passed all the math subjects.
What matters is passion and dedication!
It was a shit tonne of work and stress, but I'm very proud of my achievement. Just wanted to give you my view, since it would be a shame to let this go because you are underestimating yourself. You can get up that slope of enlightenment, just takes some work.
If you've got any questions about electrical engineering and making this choice, let me know.
@@erikpoephoofd Mate I went through high school recently, without barely understanding C-level, and then I tried b-level witch I should had failed, but our exams got changed due to corona...Denmark is retarded like that, but that also meant I just passed B-level...With no real understanding on vectors or whatever we learned...Like I barely understand ohm's, watts and so on, Id be happy to just be an electrician at this point.
Some of us just dont have the brains =/ I hate my genes...Dont even try to make me understand chemistry, technically failed c-level there as well...I got nothing but 12's and 10's in the useless subjects, which has no real interest for me anyway...Well biology B-level I got a 12, so thats something.
me dumb dumb
We all dumb dumb
The bison commands you to like and subscribe, and ofc turn notifications on!
I know Tom, no need to rub it in.
👌👌
The way you say stupid is cute!
STTOOOOOPID
Lol
😊
Yes Im Very dumb ,I think I have only two brain cells but then I must be dumber
What if i am smarter than i think , ok i said it i am stupid again
I'm in the valley of despair wrt my German speaking abilities ):
Why are you so underrated this is so unfair people like Jake Paul are so ahead, i like every vid of urs i can and have subbed with notifs on
Yep I think I understood absolutely all of that, im practically an expert
Nailed it 😂
I knew that already. Or did I?
You might have _thought_ you knew it but really.....it's worse than you think....(maybe)
WHO YOU CALLING A PINHEAD?!
My cat is perched on my desk, absolutely fascinated by the sound of your voice and the flicker-flicker on the screen. I think it was the d*g heresy that caught her attention. You've been warned. ;-)
Tom this is exactly what a degree in humanities does to you. It challenges the very way you think and makes you realize that you don't actually know anything about the world 😂
for the algorithm
❤️ 😢 thank you!
Is this video about us developers? Because if there's one group of people who "never know anything", it's we developers. We're all basically just good at googling, at this point.
Imposter syndrome AF.
I tell people I'm really dumb, I make the dunning-krurger effect work for me.
This is a joke, thanks for the downvotes.
:axe: only The People Of The Discord Tribe will get this :> AXESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Totally not a cult, we have Bisons and Cute Dogs and Axes
I do agree that cats are better than dogs...
Nah I am pretty confident that I am smart
I'm ignoring the fanboying of musk's clusterfuck to regulations that is SpaceX bc the rest of this video slaps, but you really could have used a much better example. NASA blew up teachers in the challenger, bro. Still a way more reputable institution.
So Rude but not rude
I'm Confused
*Maybe I'm dumb after all*
I know that peak of stupidity, but in learning you cannot just dive into everything you read that will just leave you in tangents, I rather prefer the black box approach that is, Learn the outline of something first and slowly learn more in layers. let's take an example of someone who is studying the subject "computer networks" if he/she tries to search and find the meaning of every term they encounter they would know everything about IP header, checksum, Packets and frames but will know nothing about how all the layers in the model interact with each other to enable us to use the end user application and allow us to access the internet.
I don’t know if you are cool with promoting other channels but i am cool if you are not. Feel free to delete this post
Watching Thunderf00t i get this feeling more than i like.
He is really good to push others and you as a viewer from this peak
Lately he focuses a lot on Elon
I am not a fan of all this drama but i like his inner BS meter
hm some things he does are really amazing
but i removed my sub because he was just so damn negative and hammering down on the same thing over and over, all while thinking is was funny or something
maybe i have to look again
Think Like A Horse
is good at what you said, too btw
@@marc_frank yes sometimes i skip half the video
He reuses some clips like 20 times
wash that hair bro
What you on about?
I hate this politically correct idea of everybody being smart in their own way.
