This Is What a $45 Million Viola Sounds Like | The New York Times
/ thenewyorktimes - Zábava
Hmm, let's record a $45 million instrument with deep, rich sound on audio equipment that doesn't have the dynamic range to record the sound, then compress the audio further thru the internet, and then have viewers listened to the soda straw thin mimic of the actual sound on speakers and headphones that cannot even translate the already internet compressed audio files and say, "This is what a $45 million sounds like."
Yeah, that should do the instrument justice....
GIMME DAT FLAC
Ayy Lmao
it sounds like you know a little about sound
it's just a clickbait for more views and money.
Came here to say the same thing, you've done the comment sections justice
He's holding something worth more than all the houses on your street combined.
You clearly don't live in Auckland...
I'm sorry I excluded these over the top expensive areas... I live in a 5 bedroom 2 floor townhouse with garden/lawn, terraces, 2 car garage... 500k it's on sale + the sun shines all year here and you eat mediterranean food in one of the most sought after locations of Spain... I think for that price you get an extremely good deal, of course this violin costs more than my entire neighborhood
So if housing seems an issue where you live, you can come here, residency is easy to obtain
+Nihilanth Non Serviam Haha, don't worry. My home in California is just like yours. It's just that Hong Kong's government doesn't care about their residents' homes, as some of my relatives there say.

Yeah I know, it's crazy, i've seen the termite nests they live in, huge blocks of apartments, tiny rooms, people living crammed together...

Someone needs to post this on their reddit page
They have, they referenced it in one of their videos a while back.
If you look closely you'll see it's actually his eyebrows making the sound.
Well played
I'm dead omg
GrandmasterofWin hahaha
GrandmasterofWin 😂
You just gave my life meaning.
for $45M, it better come with that guy as well
ikr
dracolnyte It better resurrect Bach himself. He can come out like Genie...or wreck the stage like the Kool-aid man for all I care.
😂😂😂😂
+LagiNaLangAko23 Yup, that's definitely how record players and jukeboxes worked. They were just tiny people playing even tinier instruments.
LOL!!! XD

Digital recording can never capture even 10% of the quality of the sound of a Stradivarius. Hearing it live is an incredible experience.
Alex Lanoux There is little, if any difference between analog and digital, but hearing live music is incomparably better than ANY recording.
@Alex Lanoux Dont forget that youtube compresses video and audio. Quality will be lost. Also, different speakers/playback devices have different response rates at different humidities, air pressures, angles, rooms. What also matters is the quality of the amp reproducing the sound. The sound is inevitably changed once its played back.
I think what the author of this comment meant by digital recording is the youtube playback being a form of digital media. (Semantic difference of the word digital)
I do agree with you on your comment since recording containers like FLAC are amazing and do preserve 99.99% of what they record.
@@ilanrodriguez6127 Maybe by "digital" he meant "with fingers."
that is so facts i heard a strad violin played in live concert it was one of the most beautiful sounds i’ve ever heard in my, sounded what i would imagine an angel would sound like 😭
No it definitely can. I have a 96kHz sample rate lossless recorder and it does just fine thank you.
Ah yes the sound of my dream mansion, six Ferraris, college tuition, and a giraffe
Stirling Duncan lol
Stirling Duncan but do you really have enough ghinis in your ghini account?
why giraffe. may be a Lion lol
sam sein if you have to ask why the giraffe, you're missing out on life
More like 27 giraffes
Ah if you guys were wondering this Viola was made by a famous viola maker in 1719. Only 10 were made and this one is the only surviving one that is in perfect condition and able to be played regularly. Interesting stuff.
Bryant Guidry I wish this was the top comment instead of all the jokes about how expensive it is.
Bryant Guidry I figured it was old as balls.
Bryant Guidry geez 1719! basically 300 years ago oml
Tori Volz Yes. Another hundred years or so and it would be older than the entire city/everything around it. That object outdates probably 90%+ of the entire modern city.
Ah so that's why its expensive no wonder.
The viola itself sounds as if it has a whole symphony and percussion on its own.
Actually_H ikr
my ears have never been so satisfied
It's the piece mostly but yes it does project very well.
by the 2 min mark ....wow
what the crap?? So is this a Stradivarius viola? Asking seriously.
The Viola is underrated. Most music written for strings is for the violin or cello. Viola is like an afterthought.
I decided to play viola because it was the more unique string instrument. Now I know it has the most unpopular clef and the least variety of music made for it because of that. Pain.
@@budbutterson9577 i mean we can just transpose cello stuff very easily and violin stuff just has to be brought down an octave
@@telebtw5697 It's just inconvenient :(
I know. I play by ear, since I left the college orchestra at the end of my 2nd year. But I'm leaning towards Irish music and movie scores, with some famous Alto or high tenor covers like Patsy Cline, Cher, Paul McCartney, The Everly Brothers and The Carpenters. Best of all trying to incorporate movement like Maired Nesmitt from Celtic Woman, or Anna Phoebe from Trans Siberian Orchestra.
@@telebtw5697 Or half an octave...
>This is is what a $45 million viola sounds like after undergoing CZcams's audio compression off of a crappy on-board laptop sound output through cheap head phones.
yes.. it's awful. even on my 250$ headphones
hakurimakamuri there's a limit to quality...
It sounds amazing on my headphones :D
Still sounds amazing but not as good as it would be in person.
There's some an eq cut-off, pop filter or something altering the sound.
Give it to me and it will sound like a 1$ viola you bought at the thrift store
Man Kev best comment ever
Man Kev it's not even a violin lmao
allison, it WILL be))
LOL
Man Kev you made me laugh 😂
In my opinion, no matter how beautiful and expensive an instrument may be, its all about the player and yes, the price can definitely help the quality and tone of the sound, but a professional always ties everything together. I think we all are glad to see this man is getting the praise he deserves in the comments.
Look how big he is! He makes that cello look so small!!!
There once was a really small lad, (about only a foot and a half tall), who desperately wanted to play cello. His stuttering teacher went to the top maker in town. A very small cello was made for the boy, and when the teacher presented it, he shouted, “viola!” meaning of course to say, “voila!”.....
And it stuck
And I may have made this up... 🙃
I hate people who get these instruments wrong, it's a double bass dummy head
ortsacPH no it’s a violin loser😂

With Healthbars lmao
With Healthbars that’s awesome!!! 😂🤣
With Healthbars hahaha . basically its his price for life hahaha
He is so yummy oml
im your thousanth like
I love the viola so much. I don’t understand why people dislike it so much more than the violin or cello. This is my 6th year playing it and I know I will never give it up. It’s beautiful and deserves just as much praise as all the other instruments ❤️
its because there are way less people that play it, much less repertoire, and less interesting parts in orchestral music. it also seems too much like a violin, but with less pieces and music for it, so people will generally opt for violin.
@@thereddestsuninthesky That makes sense, I wish people would make viola music more interesting so more people would play it though. I just find that the deeper sound of it is super pretty
@@svenolycannoli yes, i agree. the viola has a very rich sound.
I play it now for 3 years and I absolutly love it even if there is not so much repartoire you can learn. But I'd love to have CZcamsrs like TwosetViolin for the Viola
Hey, playing any instrument is good. More power to you and keep it up!
Rick Harrison:
I mean the bow is used and the instrument has been played a lot.
The best i can do is 40$ and im taking a big risk here seriously.
😂
I mean I know it's worth a lot, but I have a business to run here. I don't know much about strats, but I have a friend that will know everything there is to know about the instrument.
Expert- well Rick, I could see it going for around 1000 in a competitive auction.
Yea but he needs to hold on it for like 10 years before someone buys it
does the guy come with it
captainKaP I wish
lol
I was thinking the same
captainKaP LOL. Just have him stand in a corner and play
LOL nice.
captainKaP you read my mind like a book
Today, on Pawn Stars,
You bought that Viola for $45 million?
Let me call my guy.
The best I can do is $5.
Amanda Pritts
He knows a guy who deals in Viola's worth as much as the GDP of small island countries.
"Hey, this is a business; I gotta make money here too"
come on man can you go up a little from the $5 and meet me at $44 million?
adam cisneros how about a entire 5 dollars and 4 cents
Omg! How beautifully played that was, and what a magnificent sound. I will be getting a Viola very soon to replace my Violin. These videos are making Violas much more popular than they ever were I believe. The huskier voice of Viola is quite an attraction. I love it.
Ew
@@LorenaBla2208 ew to you hater
Carry on, the Viola is a beautiful and underestimated musical instrument
good
This instrument is exactly the same age as the piece being played. Bach could have had this piece played on this particular viola.
No ones gonna say it? Alright. That’s pretty awesome. :)
and the sound didnt deteriorate over time? genuinely curious if sounds from well maintained old instruments sound the same as when they were initially made
@@kathrinevanezasierra4312 some people think that older instruments sound better, actually. I’m not sure though
@@kathrinevanezasierra4312 with string instruments not so much, but for more mechanical instruments like the piano or harpsichord they do depreciate over time.
That's really cool!
I'd be too afraid to even breathe anywhere near it.
Same here
D Heyes you are very funny.. I like it.
Like the story of the guitar that was broken on the set of The Hateful 8.
D Heyes lol same
D Heyes I'd snap every single hair of that bow and kick the bridge and stomp it into smithereens
Doesn't sound anything like a $45 million Viola. It's much closer to a $39.6 million one. I can hear the difference even on a mono speaker in my smartphone.
Adam K Haha so true
Adam K I agree. This guy made a bad deal
HAHAHHAHAHA XDDDD made my day
XD
I completely agree. Made no difference on my laptop speakers.
The way he makes bow changes unnoticeable is so beautiful
*imagine him dropping it*
I had a bit of shrinkage just contemplating your comment. We would never see that man again.
that man is a billionaire
Sacrilegious
@@lincolnyonghaozhang7965 doesnt matter. he could pay 20 billion but wouldnt ever get a violia as good as that one again. Unless he brought Antonio Stradivari back to life and then waited around 300 years for the wood to age
Jeez! Don't even say such thing. It is sacrilegious!
i bet %99 of the world can't tell the difference between that and a 4.000$ viola , myself included as a musician.
Thus making its price tag fairly meaningless. I'm also a musician, but I play classical guitar, so I definitely wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
i play guitar too
And as a musician you should know that great instruments makes a difference in very, very subtle way.. And of course, judging the sound of 45mln viola by listening to really crappy recording is not the best to.
not only that. play that viola on a room with poor acoustic qualities and that 45 million dollars are a waste. in a live performance you might well notice the difference but there is no way you can tell the difference on a record unless it is quite well done. maybe you can say the armonics sound quite rich on that open strings but..... come on dude. 45 million lol
CZcams compression takes away a lot of the detail as well.
Half the reason it sounds great is the very skilled performer using it.
Puzzling exactly, it takes a true musican to perform something passionately enough to show the full potential of the viola.
in fact no. I am a violinist and if you use a better istrument it sound better tham a cheap one. How I know? I played in a violin of a professional one time and it sounded like I was far more betther tham I was in my normal violin
Cheap viola and violins has more wolfs(like one you can hear in 2:03~2:05) and a diferent timbres
Puzzling 3/4 the reason
a violin could never 💁🏻♀️ , the viola is so beautiful
wavvy eliie , say it louder for the violinist with the big egos in the back
I don’t play any string instruments but I like the depth of sound from the viola better then the violin.
It's no cello. But yeah
@@valermink so true, ppl get so full of their self trying to make the viola look bad
A violin could never.
A viola did never...
😂
so passionate, Must be incredible to lose yourself in the music like that, he is somewhere else during this performance.
marvtheandroid agree - he lives what he does here
To be lost in the music is the sign of a bad musician and to think that this is the aim of music is a sign of ignorance. One doesn't get lost or be allowed to be lost in good music. You became closer to the music and you feel it more intimately and therefore you are more aware of everything
@@kanatsizkanatli ew
@@kanatsizkanatli umm no its not. good musicians do get lost in music for solo performance. I think you’re talking about ensembles. Good musicians don’t “get lost” in the music for ensemble performance because they have responsibilities but when solo performing you aren’t paying attention to anyone but you therefore it is OK.
@@kanatsizkanatliI agree he's playing for himself here, playing way too fast and not carrying the listener with him. I get it, I play viola too and this is cello suite 3 prelude. I've played and practiced it a million times it's ok to run some parts fast but you have to stop and smell the roses too. Well that's the way I interpret bach you have to observe the signposts along the way, remembering that the listener maybe it's his first time hearing it. But he doesn't get that idea. Playing it like one big cadenza.
Legends said he did not wash his hands to this day after touching that viola..

It's not the Stradi making the music beautiful, it's the massive, beautiful, specially designed concert hall with great big echoing walls that amplify the sound.

Me when mom calls me in to the family
There was a study that found that even top violinists couldn't tell the difference between a Stradivarius and a modern (and less expensive) violin. The sound alone doesn't make the instrument worth millions. The price comes from the "brand name" and its value as a work of art with a history of being played by famous musicians. More expensive doesn't always mean a better sound.
me over here wishing i could feed my violin vitamin pills to make it grow bigger into a viola
@Skink Knitter Well you can make the strings grow with the viola too, which would change their sound
Wow, really love the music, the musician, and the precious Viola! I always love Viola; the richer sound is wonderful!
Can I put something straight? This is directed at all you people saying, "I wouldn't pay 45 million for a viola," or, "It doesn't sound any different from any other viola," or, "It's not the Viola, it's the violist."
1. You wouldn't pay 45 million for it because (A), you probably don't even know how to play it, or (B), you don't know how valuable it is and can't hear the richness and colors of the tone that resonates from it. And not only its playability and sound, it also has a history. Made in the seventeen hundreds by one of the greatest luthiers in history, Antonio Stradivari. Depending on which Viola it is, it was probably passed down from some guy to another guy and sent as a gift to some other guy and yadda, yadda, yadda. Anyhow, it being 300 years old ALONE makes it priceless. You see, the older a string instrument is, the better it sounds, and the more the wood resonates. Search it up.
2. It doesn't sound any different from other violas? ...What..? If you had a viola, or even heard a normal Viola, or played a normal Viola yourself, you would know that this Stradivari viola is exceptional in tone. Getting this sound out of any other instrument is extremely hard.
3. "It's not the viola, it's the violist." This statement is partially correct, if a beginner played this Stradivari, it will sound horrible, but if David Aaron Carpenter played a cheap viola it wouldn't sound very good.
Thank you for taking your time to read this.

You read my mind! I was thinking...what's with the poor sound quality?
The mic is probably fine. It's the room that is at fault.
***** Thanks, im getting into recording myself and terminology still flies over meh
it's like they used the camera mic, in a shitty room to boot with. good job
I cannot get over the sheer transportation he experiences while playing, so profound that he's spellbound for nearly 10s after it finishes BEFORE HE EVEN BREATHES AGAIN. Extraordinary! We're all richer for having experienced a tiny fraction of it with him.
Sounds smooth as butter. Love it.
But I only got a small loan of a Million...
Please Give This Man A Beer!!! xD
Dracule Mihawk adjust for inflation.
Dracule Mihawk sell your castle. Taka no me...
Can I have that small loan 💲💵💲💸
And yet you spend all your time on a creepy raft....
It's funny & awesome that the better a musician gets, the more they sound like 3 or 4 musicians playing at once.
mlaro888 This is actually real! If a musician plays really in tune, it sounds like a bunch of other notes are also being played. It's the overtone series at work. This is also why a good barber shop quartet sounds like there's like 20 guys singing - they're all so in tune that their chords get extra notes.
I know :) it's so cool! Thanks for the insights, I'm interested to know more and exact science behind it just out of curiosities sake. :D
mlaro888 in music there is something called the pyramid of sound. It is a structure of how much of each sound you need. ( bass is on the bottom and soprano instruments at the top). When you get the right balance of power like In a barbershop quartet or the right strings on the viola it makes the sound fuller and sound bigger than it actually is.
Don't forget the fact that there's some reverberation in that room. A dry signal of a viola doesn't sound as big or full.
The secret is that the best musicians are actually stacks of smaller musicians in a trenchcoat.
A performance worthy of subsequent guitar smashings. Bravo bravo 👏🏼👏🏼
I remember seeing this video back when I first started taking viola lessons. Now I’m a senior in college about to graduate playing in orchestras.
That’s cool
He looks like he got touched by an angel at the end
His face says that he enjoys playing 15th century music more than having sex with someone.
+etamlous Exactly xD
+etamlous This piece is 18th century.
Looks like he came a bit to me.

Forgive me. Spice Girls is the only classical music I know.
