  • Ron DeSantis is literally getting on everyone's nerve. Quiet as it's kept, the pundits don't believe that he has the charisma necessary to be electable, but y'all didn't hear that from me. Anyway, a lot of people wonder how it is possible that someone who is black and a member of the LGBTQ+ community could live in Florida. Well, I'm here to tell you...

I’m from florida, and I’ve lived all over the state. While I agree that Miami is VERY different from the rest of florida, the politics are quickly moving and will affect south Florida. I don’t think a lot of people realize a lot of of the policies that are passing will affect miami (immigration, funding for DEI programming in schools, undocumented workers) and people there and it will affect a lot more people than in the past. Miami friends, y’all are not safe either, especially since a large portion of Latinos in Miami (Cubans, I’m looking at you) consistently vote republican. Although not all republicans are extreme, that’s still a vote for Ron DeSantis (who is running for president and even if he loses, he passed a bill in the most recent legislative session to return to florida as governor). We also can’t excuse our latino people for that vote because we need to take a step further and realize that republicans use verbiage to trigger the ideas of communism to keep the latino vote. As someone who works in state policy in Florida, I am very afraid for everyone. Stuff that we’ve never seen happen in politics is happening and will impact EVERYONE.

I hate that we've allows the media to keep creating these boogeyman as if they are ONLY lawmakers to pass draconian, anti-Black, anti-LGBT laws when they are more common than not. LGBT people are not a protected class which means it's basically legal to discriminate against them & gives legal precedent for all kinds of laws. I live in NYC and our mayor might as well be a republican as well as our local and state representatives based on the way they vote and the laws they pass. No matter what laws are passed or not, they will always find a way to enforce them on Black poor people & pretty much anyone who isn't wyt. People need to wake up & pay attention to the both Democrats & GOP & who they really represent bc they are both violating us

What I was not expecting was a perspective from someone who’s thoughts I have come to respect so much and whose reasoning ability shows him capable of dealing with nuance in ways that most people are not proclaiming we are not affected by it so that’s how come we can live with it. I get that you feel like what the gov is doing has no effect on y’all day to day but that’s low key the point of how racism and homophobia are designed to work. Most of the danger is below the surface and you don’t see it till It’s too late. I know you speak of how pro- diversity Miami is but all

It may have worked before but what hapenning now is unprecedented. Your denying what is really happening in the neighboring houses so long as it doesn't get to your house. But little do you know its like a wild fire and eventually baby its going to spread to your house. Next thing you know your trying to put out the fire but its to late kate cause the law has been signed sealed and now delivered. The only ignorant thing would be to live in Miami and not vote because one feels that Miami is that different. I have family in Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, and Orlando. If your governor has his way, Miami will be totally different in a while. I absolutely love visiting Miami - and yes, I do South Beach because I'm on vacation - but what I love about South Beach is that it feels like I'm not in the U.S. South Beach is definitely not the rest of Miami or Florida. But he's coming for all of it, so get ready.

It's not what we are taught that will be the problem. It will be what they aren't taught that will be the problem. In 20 years, the mechanisms of racism (redlining, gerrymandering, excessive IRS audits, discrimatory lending, and so on) will still be in place. However, they won't believe it or won't care because all the work the civil rights movement and beyond did to prove racism will have been erased. Their parents certainly won't tell them. Schools were the safety net that made sure no could forget or deny.

I am a 50 yr old black straight woman born and raised in South Florida. I live in Wilton Manors. We call Miami little Cuba. Because that's mostly what's down there. They have all the little festivals down there but they also have the 1st 48 there every other episode too. Let's keep it real. I agree with some of what Funky says , but not all. We are all subject to the laws here in Florida. However the feeling in the all the counties are different. The people in Dade County are unhinged. The people in Broward County are situational hostages. The people in Palm Beach County are trying to get away. And the rest of the state feels like they are free from all the drama. That is Florida in a nut shell. Just keeping it real.😂
