I know, right? There were several instances where Jerry was the instigator.
An example off the top of my head: There's the Serenade episode, where Tom is trying to serenade a female cat he likes; which he first gets Spike out of the way, before playing her a song on guitar. This unintentionally wakes up Jerry; who instantly takes it as a personal attack; and rather then asking Tom to stop, or trying to reason with him (in which case Tom's reaction would've instigated the fight); Jerry opts to physically assault him instead. Feels like he instigated that conflict himself; even if Tom's music was annoying him; that's no reason to go full on aggression out of nowhere.
What about the Episode where Tom inherited a million dollars; but loses all of it if he harms an animal? After learning this; Tom tries to live the big life, and be a respectable person with all that money and no fears to think of ever again. Except one problem; Jerry also reads the message, learns he can't hurt him anymore; and begins extorting Tom for all he's worth, and using it as a blockaid to literally harass, torture and hurt Tom, because he can't do anything; which finally culminates with Tom losing his temper; and literally saying "I'm throwing away a million dollars; BUT I'M HAPPY!" all because Jerry wouldn't leave him alone.

When a radio announcement declares the mouse safe, he kicks it and blows the house to bits. Of course, Jerry had been posing as the white mouse to taunt Tom crazy. He had initially thought the real white mouse to be Jerry disguised again, only for Jerry to make himself known at the other end of the room.

Hanna-Barbera's Tom and Jerry is simply a masterpiece. It is so excellently produced and connected that I am constantly in awe whilst dying of laughter when I watch it. Scott Bradley & Carl Stalling made good use of their companies' music libraries with a generous helping of public-domain classical music thrown in. This is why a lot of people claim their introduction to classical music was from classic cartoons.

    • @KaizerHuter
      @KaizerHuter Před 8 lety +189

I honestly always hated Jerry. He's just SUCH an asshole. Maybe it's just the episodes I saw, but more often than not, the conflict would spark from Jerry's desire to have a little fun at Tom's expense. Jerry knew Tom would chase him, and purposely showed himself so that he could lure Tom to a trap.
There was, straight up, an episode where Tom's owner tells him that if Tom causes a mess in the house, He's going to "get it" when she comes back, and Jerry overhearing that proceeds to try his best to mess up the House for the Rest of the episode.
One thing I remember happening WAY TOO OFTENLY in the series, are scenarios where Jerry carries Tom's fate in the tip of his fingers, Tom Begging, like SERIOUSLY BEGGING for his life, for Jerry to spare him, and Jerry pretends to spare him for a second only to fuck him over soon after.
      FUCK JERRY.

I think he forgot one very, very crucial thing -- the music. It's amazing on every level. The prove is that we usually don't even realize that there's a music involved. It's so perfectly synchronized with the visuals and the story, that we sense the music as just being an acoustic representation of the actions and emotions.
Try it! Look at some Tom and Jerry short and listen to the music. Imagine an orchestra playing it, imagine you are the cymbalist, the violinist, the drummer accompanying the suspension. You can even try to just hear the shorts without watching them. Just from the music, you will always kknow almost exactly, what's going on...

The episode is just Tom trying to sleep while Jerry and a grey mouse constantly beat the crap out of him and at one point making him think he stabbed himself with the use of a knife and some ketchup. The payoff at the end? Both mice stuck in a bottle that rigged so that if they try to leave by pushing the cork out, a revolver will shoot through the glass..the same revolver they actually used on him earlier in the short, meanwhile Tom sighs in content while laying on his cat pillow and using his tail to hold a fan and use it as he goes to sleep.

Am I the only one who preferred Tom over Jerry?
For me (as a child), sure I preferred Jerry over Tom, it was 'evident' that the mouse was the good guy and Tom was the bad.
But as I rewatched the series (AKA some episodes :P), I noticed that I felt more sympathetic towards Tom than towards Jerry.
Maybe it's just me, but it seemed that some (or even most--probably exaggerating there) endings with Tom getting beaten, or mistreated was unjust towards him (for me).
I mean, he's a CAT. He's *supposed* to catch mice--Some of the episodes he tries to catch Jerry due to his owner.
For example, there was an episode (I don't remember the name) where Tom played the role of an infant due to his owner's wishes.
Jerry began picking on him and relentlessly continued after having the knowledge that if Tom continued to 'misbehave' (by giving in to his *predatory* and *cat* instincts) he would be punished by his owner. (However this could be wrong due to my memories of childhood).
But as I said before, this is just my opinion and I did not intent to offend any readers/viewers.

Tom and Jerry is one of the most amazing cartoons of all time. Up there with Bob Clampett and Tex Avery. And I agree with everything Doug said here. The animation was fast-paced and lifeful. The violence is also very cartoonish and does not feel too violent. Modern cartoons are more violent, especially Family Guy. The timing was also perfect. The music is also beautiful and truly remarkable.
And then we have the characters. Despite Tom's name being first, Tom is the antagonist in this show. He doesn't really need to chase Jerry, he does it just because he wants to.
Jerry is the real protagonist of this show, and a great protagonist too. Jerry always has to fight Tom in order to stay alive. He is sometimes brutal towards Tom, but it is justifiable nearly all the time, since Tom always try to hurt him. Tom and Jerry were basically Hanna-Barbera's Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, only quiet and with a lot of different setups.
But there are two things I don't understand. The criticism towards Jerry and the show itself.
Tom is, just like Doug said, asking for it pretty much the time. Tom is usually a big jerk to Jerry. The main reason is because he's bigger. Therefore, Jerry punching Tom are acts of either revenge or self-defence. Jerry usually has a reason to be a... I'm not gonna call him whatever his detractors calls him.
The criticism towards the show itself mystifies me too. Who is foolish enough to think people would imitate all the violence?
And on a final note: If people were not sympathizing with Jerry, the cartoon would not have been very popular at all. There are lots of people who are supporting Jerry (like me), but in comment sections like this one, it feels like no one likes him or the show. It's almost the same thing with Spongebob. If nobody liked him, no one would like the show.

As Doug also mentions, Jerry sometimes enjoys defending himself a little TOO much, and there are in fact those rare times he actually starts the fight and gets away with it. They're not often (and yeah MOST of the times Jerry acts worse than Tom, he loses instead) but I think that occasional unfair stipulation made Tom easier to sympathise, the world will punish him even if he wasn't the one in the wrong while Jerry will sometimes be seen as the hero and get off scot free even if he's the instigator. Also Jerry's 'defensive' stipulation was sometimes skewed, such as when Tom was just trying to stop him stealing food.
It's like some of the Sylvester shorts like 'Canned Feud', the mouse is the instigator, and a very sadistic one at that. It feels like they skipped over the 'He started it' scene because we are supposed to assume the cute little mouse has been provoked and deserves to torment the big nasty cat by default. That writing flub makes it VERY hard to root for them even when they ARE playing fair, and sometimes ruins the humour, which comes from the 'villain's' cruel arrogance coming back on them.

I think you're wrong. The driving force was each character's personality. I grew up on Tom and Jerry. Loved both of them, although they were very different personalities. Tom was alway trying to figure out how to catch Jerry and Jerry was always trying to figure out how to excape Tom. They were both clever, although the undermouse was always the most clever in the end. It was big guy against little guy and little guy always found a way to win. We knew what was going to happen all the time, but were amused when it happened. It had nothing to do with pain, because we all knew there was no real pain involved. It was the unexpected way the little guy defeated the big guy. That was the fun of Tom and Jerry.

I'm sorry, but the movie for Tom & Jerry is actually one of my favorites, and although the movie is dialogue heavy, they gave the duo some great character voices for the film. Granted they hardly ever talked in the first place, but having them talk (back when it came out) for a full length film was actually a breath of fresh air. It still kept the slapstick, it still kept the air of conflict; just not between the duo themselves anymore. They had the dog, the villainous aunt and lawyer, the captain of the carnival, and the doctor turned stray catcher to keep them on their toes. They turned an iconic vs duo into a team vs the world scenario, and it worked.
