- CARTOON EVOLUTION #4
I take a look at the history and evolution of TOM & JERRY, the manic and madcap debut creations of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, and the first break-through cartoon stars for MGM.
Debuting in some of the most violent cartoon shorts ever seen, and paving the way for an entire groundbreaking animation style and entertainment empire with Hanna & Barbera at the forefront - the characters’ appearances were tamed and toned down over the years, with acclaimed animator Brad Bird once calling them “the most screwed up” and “abused comic characters there are.
I take a look at how Bugs evolved alongside Warner Bros. other popular characters, including Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam and more, and how he co-existed and outshone characters from Disney including Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and creations from Hanna-Barbera.
I discuss the most important changes in their design and personality and in the stylistic and narrative structures of their films prevalent across more than 8 decades of shorts and series

I grew up watching Tom and Jerry. It was a cartoon that I love for it's slapstick gags and a large amount of violence that they got away with back during the '40s and '50s. As an adult, I have to say that after 8 decades, these classic shorts still hold up really well. Heck, I'd even argue that the slapstick holds up better than Looney Tunes. William Hanna and Joesph Barbara did a really fantastic job with the comedic timing of the gags and they established the one single rule that the title characters aren't allowed to talk with a few exceptions of course. Overall, Tom and Jerry will always hold a special place in my childhood as a timeless classic and will always be considered one of the greatest cartoons of all time.

Weird thing I noticed, the seven animators noted are the amount of Oscar’s tom and Jerry won.
My grandpa (from Mexico) loved Tom and Jerry. He didn't need to know English to understand what was going on. I grew up watching Tom and Jerry, knowing this much this episode is better then that controversy, I wouldn't even have guessed. All the episodes were absolutely good, even if there was more or less violence. The series as a whole has a perfect balance.
thats kinda similar to mines my gramps came to the us in the late 60s knowing little to no english. ive heard he was a huge tom and jerry fan, he would wake up early on his days off just to watch it. sadly he passed back in ‘93 and i really didn’t get to meet him.
Oh my goodness! My grandparents were Mexican too and they introduced me and my little brother and sister to Tom and Jerry. We were mesmerized we loved them, we would watch the old shorts over and over and over again.
The older version episodes are somehow the most satisfying to watch.
Just like how everything in media is. The older movies (Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain, It Happened One Night, etc.) are SO MUCH BETTER than today's movies, why? Cause today's movies are all hollow cash-grabs full of special fx, and lame cliches that just copy stuff that was already done better in the past with originality. The old movies told a story and made every scene entertaining with great acting, today's movies just pump it full of 'awesome' stunts and budget-breaking effects that nobody asks for and then figures out a plot like after all the film shooting is done (see the latest Star Wars movies, ugh).
Tom and Jerry only got worse as it continued because none of the ones after Hanna and Barbera could copy what made it fun originally-- they just tried to copy it for a quick payday. The 2021 Movie I hope will stay true to the cartoon's roots I hope, or it will be another box office bomb.

I just hope they don’t switch it to the boring 3D animated format. These characters need to stay the way they are.
3D animation stands for reality. Tom and jerry would lose the absurdity we loved then for.
It wouldn’t have the sense of realism, a rather ironic way to put it. Tom and Jerry was the cartoon that would give the atmosphere of comedy of the way 2D characters move, like how Tom always has this weird angle when he turns around

Back in 2010 I would cheer loudly at 6 in the morning whenever a Fred Quimby short was chosen to be shown to my small argentinian mind. I used to wake up early just to see these. I can't possibly choose a favourite, but most of the candidates are from that age. Jerry's cousin and the one where Spike gets Tom to be scared of Tyke were some of my favourites. Mammy Two-shoes was also one of my favourite characters.

I’m really hoping that Tom and Jerry will find an outlet to truly shine again. I would really like to see them go back to their roots much like Warner Bros is doing with the Looney Tunes right now.
If only it didn’t use Flash animation though. That show still looks pretty cheap.
I still want WB to do a Tom and Jerry crossover with Looney Tunes and/or Scooby Doo. If they can do Willy Wonka, there's no reason not to do one
Scooby-Doo could possibly work, Looney Tunes not so much. Mostly because of their different comedy styles. The comedy from Looney Tunes comes more from the words the characters say rather than the physical actions. Tom and Jerry’s comedy is based more on physical humor than verbal humor.
Tom and Jerry could easily cross over with Sylvester and Tweety. Surprised WB have yet to do it.
kingovharts Maybe.
Tom's screams are the most rememberable part of the shows. If you watched the old cartoons, you know what I'm talking about.
Fred Quimby's Tom & Jerry is my favourite of all time. Animation is to the point the way it should be.
"You can't make everyone happy", this is the quote that sums up fandom in general.
there seems to be a generational gap in fans as well, and it's difficult for some to be so open-minded with such differing perspectives.
That’s why there are dislikes on this video
I always assumed that Tom was named that way since he’s a cat, you know, like a Tomcat
E Man I think that they named Tom that because of the fact that he’s a cat, but then Jerry got his name because in the war British soldiers were known as “Tom” or “Tommy” by German soldiers because that to them was a stereotypical British name, and British soldiers called German soldiers “Jerry” since they thought that was a stereotypical German name.

you just can't beat the OG cartoon golden age Tom and Jerry. That was when they were at their best and had the most detail and effort put into them. I don't think anyone will be able to ever truly recreate the quality and style of their golden age. I would also point out one thing you really missed and found it a critical aspect of the golden age shorts, the screams and vocalizations of Tom and Jerry. Because they very rarely talked these vocalizations were their true voices and were done by William Hanna himself. I don't think anyone gives these screams of comical and yet also visceral pain enough credit.

Yeah, the original Hanna-Barbera were the best. Sad that we'll probably never see them on TV again, what with the ever increasingly draconian "anti-violence in cartoons" laws.
Well said! It is these screams that really make my belly hurt from laughter every single time. They are an integral part of the Tom and Jerry cartoons.
The old tom and Jerry is so much better than the new one.
The new one isn't funny at all
the new one looks awful compared to the old ones, not that it's particularly bad (it's a hell of a lot better than other flash animated cartoons) but it's just so... layered? like, you can tell that some parts are just being tilted on a layer or stretched and squashed on a layer rather than being redrawn to make sense with the body, and it just looks awkward and incredibly amateur
also the old ones are funnier and more memorable
The Original 1940 - 1958 were the best!
PikaPerfect I agree
Tbh I agree, the old one ruled! The new one. . . Not so much.
Basic flash animation really isn't good enough, they should stick to the old animation.
I am an animator and I even know what's best for T&J.
Fred Quimby’s production, the first and oldest version where always the best. You can see it from the animation and direction quality. The modern generation just doesn’t hold a candle.
I feel kind of old. This is the only cartoon I always wait everyday on Cartoon Network with three episodes every weekdays.
Tbh I definitely believe that the classic 1940-1967 cartoons were absolutely the best. They were made for all ages, not just children. New Tom and Jerry after 1967 (after Chuck Jones era) until present are too kid-friendly and are really boring to watch for older ages. The Hanna-Barbera episodes were absolutely the best, but the Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones episodes were also really great, and all 161 classic episodes are absolutely enjoyable for all ages from children to old people.
Seriously, Tom and Jerry are my literal childhood. The first time my brother laughed out loud at something was Tom and Jerry.
I have 6 tom and jerry cartoon discs with the first 2 shorts part of them.
In my eyes, they’re worth more than gold.
I think i have 3 movies and idk how many shorts and episodes
Nothing beats the animation of the Hannah-Barbera MGM period. There's a fluidity and weight to the characters like no other cartoon I've seen.

1. The Tom and Jerry Show (1975)
2. Tom and Jerry Gene Deitch (1961-1962)
3. The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980-1982)
I feel so addicted to watching the old style
I've seen Tom and Jerry for years, but never have I once though of it as violent, just entrainment.
I think of violence on a more mortal kombat level. People are just way too sensitive
Generation full of snowflakes 🤣😭
- Vixlo - it's not the kids who watched it, it's the parents who are like "omg!!!!! that's too violent for my kid!!!!!!" which... most of the current generation isn't having kids right now, so that only leaves boomers and gen x 🤔
My family never stopped me and my siblings, cousins from watching the show. In fact they sometimes used to sit down and watch it with us and actually enjoy it.........good times
Or Violentainment
It's violence just not extreme violence
it really warms my heart to know that this show was a big part of people's childhoods across multiple generations ♡
This was a fantastic evolution video! I learned so much about my favorite cartoon characters, Tom and Jerry! I’ve watched this video like 5 times so far! Going to check out the spike and tyke one after!
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed! 😁
@@DaveLeeDownUnder But Where's Tex Avery I Love To Singa?
I remember seeing a really weird Tom and Jerry cartoon, where Tom was committing suicide because Jerry got a girlfriend, and a much better life, but then Jerry broke up and decided to commit suicide himself.
And this was a real episode.
yes it was i have seen it too
That's called "Blue Cat Blues" (1955)
that's the 1950s for ya
Ok why did I realized Tom is WAY older than Garfield?
Yes that is strange.
Hey i'm older than Tom and i'm still only 12.
Tom *uhhhhhh, cat years*
Wow
How old are them?
I've always been fond of the Chuck Jones era myself. I tend to love his expressions and movement in cartoons, they have such a personal signature of his unique style and I like it a lot.
i’m the same way
That was the first classic version I watched on the TV when I was 10
he did my favorite opening of the Tom & Jerry cartoons where the MGM Lion becomes Tom lolz
I like them too. I really began to love them once Dean Elliot replaced Eugene Poddany as music director. The jazzy intros to Jerry, Jerry, Quite Contrary, and Cannery Rodent, really appeal to me.
When I was a kid, I used to think that Chuck Jones' version are Tom and Jerry's past because not only they looked younger, its also looked like it was before they met Tom's owner which is the lady who kept shouting "THOMAS"
Modern animators just have to watch Mouse in Manhattan and then realise how much better hand drawn is over computer drawn. Also add in that amazing score of Mouse in Manhattan and you have an amazing series.
Just saw the Tom and Jerry 2021 movie and I liked it. It is not groundbreaking or extraordinary, at times clichéd but we don't go to see the narrative of the Tom and Jerry. We go to see our childhood on the big screen. Ngl I did want to see more of them in the movie though. Btw, the animators did a sick render.
The movie flopped , we don't want to see humans in T&J , storyline is about humans and Tom an Jerry are just side characters
My all-time least favorite movie ever made. Words cannot express my hatred towards that movie.
@@user-zd7ru5wd9dexactly,tom and Jerry don’t work in films, that’s because they’re simple cartoons, they could never peak to who framed roger rabbit. That’s why the 14 films are now infamous for being crap, well except for the magic ring.
I think tom and jerry was an example of a basic idea that was executed really well. The animation and timing and energy of the slapstick was the best there was at the time. I think the problem of the later shorts and series was the lack of the great exicusion of the slapstick. Thus making the farly basic idea more obvious and less interesting to see. Plus the later movies just throwing them in other movies like willy wonka and the chocolate factory for no real reason.
Whats bext tom and Jerry and looney tunes and scooby doo
Golden rule of Tom and Jerry is....
Gravity will work when the Tom and Jerry look down
Edit: Can we made it into 1K???????
If only gravity worked like that in real life...
@DeWherewolf and run into each other.
That’s the golden rule of cartoons as a whole
so they can walk up the side of buildings as long as they don't look down
What doesn't kill you deforms you
Tom and Jerry was my most favourite 50's cartoon. More than the Looney Tunes. I can't believe my grandparents also grew up with this show. Even if T&J is super old, it still makes many laugh to this day.
there was nothing like staying home sick from school and curling up on your couch to watch Tom and Jerry and the older cartoons that would air on CN. they'd marathon Boomerang stuff on Thanksgiving too--i have vivid memories of sitting at the kid's table with my plate, watching Tom and Jerry with grandma.
Tom and Jerry: Fast and the Furry is definitely the best Tom and Jerry movie made.
That's was the one wear they race and there's a whole bunch of people right? Sorry if it's a stupid question but it's been 8 years since I've seen it (15 now)
@@christopherwinter2099I'm just leaving it as a blunt yes.
Me: watches a 1940's Tom and jerry video
My parents: This episode was from 1940!
Me: wat
G Smasha you got a music note but very unfamous, sad
@@cxtex well if u fell sad then help it u idiot gacha,
@@cxtex I'd be more willing to watch his videos than yours
Bro, wtf, I was just pointing something out, this was 5 fucking months ago.
The 1940 - 1950 show and the 2014 show are the best
Wow, no one in my family alive is older than Tom and Jerrry
Fun fact: Tom and Jerry are the only big name cartoons that didn’t appear in who framed roger rabbit.
Wasn't it because they weren't owned by warner bros at the time?
@@mr.badass9442 I dunno, I do remember there was also mickey and his squad in it. I was like isn't that from disney.
They tried getting Popeye also, but weren't able to.
Casper the friendly ghost wasn’t there, his scene was scrapped.
Like Droopy Turner owned them at the time, and still technically do despite Warner handling distribution for the MGM shorts.
I wish they would go back to the old animation style!
Yeah...
Damn I LOVE this show! Brings back so many memories.
Good on ya Dave!
The 1940 Tom and Jerry is to date one of the most high quality cartoons of all time.
*aight, who remembered the Tom train tracks scene?*
I do, the episode is “Blue Cat Blues”
That was sad af
i swearrrr that was so sad fr
That was a heartbreaking episode. To think I've seen DAMN near every episode of T&J that and Jerry freezing in the snow and Tom taking him in... near tear jerkers
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Can't wait to see the voice evolution of Tom & Jerry, that'll be interesting. 😂
“In this series, we have briefly discussed the evolution and history of Tom and Jerry, right from their inception in 1940 up until to the modern age. What we have yet to cover, however, is the evolution of the character’s voices, given life by a small number of voice actors over the years. So, without further comment from myself, I will allow the voice actors to guide you in this edition of Cartoon Evolution.”
“YEEEOWWW!”
“If this is your first time checking out one of my videos...”
@@fredarok579 LOL Yah. Which funny enough all of Tom's screams and yowls of pain are mostly done by Joseph Barbara during the theatre days I believe.
@@tails230 William Hanna actually.
And tom's cat screetches we're provided by Clarence Nash, Donald duck's voice actor by recycled voice clips from Disney films
Also Tom's new screams Since 2005 is Spike Brandt.
I watched that episode of T&J from 1941 in 2004. Never feel old. Even after 80 years they keep on entertaining but i still want old version back.
Boy the early tom and jerry was the best, the animation, music, the comedy, everything just top notch
