  • In this video I painted 4 panels.
2 were laid flat and to were placed vertical.
2 panels I sprayed the base and clear with a $25 spray gun.
2 Panels were sprayed with a $750+ pro spray gun.
I then showed them to 7 guys and the results will surprise you. Check it out.
Products used in the video are available from

I've been painting over 20 years and used both cheap and expensive, currently using a clone devilbiss for backyard work that cost $160 and I love it. The trick with cheap guns is to keep them as clean as the day you purchased them or they foul up and are never the same again.

The flip side is that buying an expensive gun and not maintaining it as meticulously as it deserves will not only waste money but produce shoddy results.

  • @satamanschmidt3428

Exactly as I predicted. On the flat panels you can dump enough clear on that the clear flattens by itself. On the vertical panels the difference in atomization might cause more runs with the cheap gun as that's been my personal experience. If you can avoid runs on the vertical panels you might have more orange peel with the cheap gun. To me it's the vertical panels where any advantage of the more expensive guns is more obvious as you just can't smash it on without having it run if the atomization isn't top notch.

As an additional comment the cheapest spray guns made (NOT CHEAPEST SOLD) is the 3M Accuspray spray guns made entirely of plastic. They charge $200 for an injected molded plastic gun with disposable spray heads that can't cost them any more than $5 to make. The point I’m making is that they spray very well. There has been little change in the science of spray guns since Iwata introduced its split nozzle design that pre-atomizes the finish. All of the rocket science has already been done and the copycat guns can be very good now.

Keeping your equipment clean and in good repair has more to do with useful life than price. To borrow from my other training, it's more about the skill of the person pulling the trigger and the quality of the the ammunition than the price of the gun. Well done presentation.
I have very cheap spray guns and higher quality/priced spray guns. The main reason I prefer my more expensive guns for base and clear...they are a bit lighter and feel better in my hand. Spraying with a gun he's comfortable with has more to do with the finished product than the price of a painter's spray gun. Thank you for the comparison.

Would have to wonder if it would be worth using the cheap guns more often and throwing them out when done - the cost of time and materials to clean a $25 gun (or a $700 gun). Use it and discard.
Also shows the value of skills - No doubt the countless hours of painting you have make a HUGE difference in performance/finish that the average person might achieve with either gun.

Just goes to show it’s not about how much you spend on equipment, it’s about how you use it. I bought a HVLP gun at a pawn shop for $7 and it was a cheapo. Had to be extensively cleaned up but now looks new inside. I think I’ll give it a go to paint an old Dodge truck with.

Once or twice per year DIY will do well with cheap gun, if cleaned properly every time!
5-6 working days a week is another thing.
The right compressor is more the question for DIY, often they will use a inferior one. And if they bought a 500 bucks gun it's a sour lesson to spend a bundle on the adequate compressor...
Left the painting 83 and jumped into carpentry. Still do some jobs now and then. But am woody to the core 😂

bought 2 yrs ago..a cheap 36 dollar gun 1.2 tip.why?? because I figured on a whim.check and see if it did better than the 28$ harbor freight
the Jet tools cheap gun had 2 tips.1.4 ....1.2..if not mistaken.mb 1.1 but think 1.2..
    but anyway.wow how much nicer.
only thing after using few times over 3 days trying to paint pieces.it started to develop a leaking drip.at the trigger area.
was a pain .and had to clean the tip often..It had few extra holes for atomation.but shur did spray well for a beginner..
tool later and spent 700 for a devilbis.and love it.still some learning curve but it sprays as nice.if setting off a little the cheap did a nicer job meaning will take time adjusting to the devilbis.
being new at painting.hope the next round of painting i get things working a little better.21 gal tank is not the best.but has worked thru trials and errors for this 78 nova project.time tells all...
think I will try to practice when time comes to get air pressure down to about 30..I have had learned 45 psi the guns did great.and lowering psi.will most likely be a goal try .and see what is what.good video you done here

I've also seen comparisons where the quality of the spray job gets worse the more the cheapo gun is used. Would one last to do an entire car yourself? Is not only the tool, but who is using it. Give a noob some pro equipment and it will not ended well... I mean the tools and equipment will not going to do all the job by themselves no matter they are the most expensive you can give him, but give a pro some cheap equipment and the results will be very good, not that perfect but outstanding at least and in some cases it will be almost at the same level of the professional and expensive equipment. And of course, all depends on how often are you going to use it. For a DIY cheap tools are ok, but for a daily work or professional auto painting, you better stick with the most reliable equipment and that is never cheap.

So you read our comments and made this video. Thanks. It seems the 25 dollar gun works better than the 150 dollar one you used in the other video.
I'll buy the cheaper one for working at home and use it with my 2hp 10bar 50lt compressor. Is the compressor good enough?
    Thank you guy.

have to ask, do you sand/wet sand the base coat at all?? going to be doing a few little bits at home and had mixed responses on doing like an 800grit wet sand on the base first before the clear coat. and, should i got acrylic or enamel??

@@customspraymods ok, because when ever ive sprayed, the panel always has the last 2 or so line with the "wet" look. but where i first startes, although it had the wet look then has the overspray coming to it once ive reached the bottom of the panel and leaves it looking dusty. dont know if that makes sense or not aha. that why i was thinking it needed that sand to even it all out or does the clear coat do that anyway
