This is the pilot episode for what was to be a series on the Sci-fi Channel based on the comic book Amazing Screw-On Head, written and drawn by Mike Mignola. Unfortunately, it was not picked up.
Screw-On Head (Paul Giamatti) - Literally a screw-on head, apparently made of metal; Abraham Lincoln's top agent in occult matters. He was well over a hundred years old at the time of the American Civil War. Nothing is known about his origins.
Emperor Zombie (David Hyde Pierce) - Highly intelligent and articulate for a zombie; he apparently brought about his own undead state using ancient, forbidden knowledge, out of a lust for power.
Mr. Groin (Patton Oswalt) - Screw-On Head's ninth manservant. He aids Screw-On Head in many ways, including acting as a surrogate body.
Abraham Lincoln (Corey Burton) - The President of the United States and Screw-On Head's boss.
Patience (Molly Shannon) - Vampire lover of Emperor Zombie. Renamed Patience in the pilot, while mortal she was the only woman Screw-On Head ever loved.
Aggie and Geraldine (Mindy Sterling) - Two of Zombie's servants. One is a werewolf, the other a cannibal who takes over Dr. Snap's role from the original comic.

this is the second time i see you
Ok, So let me get this straight... Sci-fi gets movies with cgi so bad that it wouldn't pass for a Chinese rip off, but this only gets a pilot? I call bullshit.
what you are not a fan of sharkando 7 1/2?
Just follow my saying: Anything that isn't true effort and well done doesn't deserve crap and must be burnt for true talent to take the spotlight and laugh at inferior work trying to claim it's good
2D animation costs ALOT of money to produce to be honest. I loved this, but I can see that they cut a ton of corners with the animation, so at times it looks really cheap. Especially with the complex shadows and style of the characters.
For this to be successful it would need to not only have to extremely popular and win over test audiences, it would also have to find some way to streamline the animation, without it looking so bad. Cause stylistically it's amazing. But animation wise it's mediocre at best.
Most pilots are like that, though.

I quite like that Emperor Zombie's lively voice contrasts his soulless design.
its quite cute
The visuals are LITERALLY just like the comic. Expertly animated and hugely entertaining. I would seriously pay good money to see a series of this.
Well that's good, because it likely cost a fortune to animate in this style.
JBlask me too, it looks so good
alexandra galici We have Flash
Like what Pan Pizza said: The fact that this pilot even got animated like this is a feat to behold.
Nah, flash is perfect for this, Alexandra - you clearly know nothing of flash because guess what... THIS WAS ANIMATED IN FLASH!
But... it was cleaned up in after effects and ripped from the TV, which is why it looks cel-shaded.

The same neurotic and refined voice he uses in Frasier and his other roles becomes amazingly menacing here. Well done.

*clears throat* alright now that that....wait a minute...no, ya thats correct; that that is out of the way i agree, the comedy in this is top notch.
No wonder there's only one episode, Screw on Head cremated himself after this episode.
I am so excited I just made water in my pantaloons!
I'm amazed that Adult Swim did not pick this up after Syfy rejected it.
Kind of a shame.
I was thinking the same thing. I can't believe that a show like Squidbillies can get eight seasons on TV but Amazing Screw-On Head only gets one freaking episode.
Mike Mignola did an AMA on reddit and when asked if he would ever revisit screw on head, said "No, I got it right the first time."
too expensive the voice actors alone must have cost a small fortune.Remember what happened to Adult Swim when Stephen Colbert got famous.every show he was a regular voice in was cancelled.
Shane Sprague Boss answer right there
@@cgaffney2001 Bro I know you commented a decade ago, but Squidbillies is an 11 minute show with cheap voice actors that costs nothing to produce. This episode alone probably cost almost half what a whole season of Squidbillies cost.
In our current world of shows like Adventure Time and Rick and Morty, this would do well. I think the pilot came just a few years too early
Joshua McClellan lets get it to come back but I’m just worried that they would make it political somehow someway
The reason it never got made was the amount of money required to make animation this good in Mike Mignolas style. The SyFy Channel doesn't have that kind of money

@crptic9925 I hope so.
If it comes true I'll watch this for sure.
this needs a kickstarter
I would've loved to see a full series of this, amazing art-style, funny dialogue, and hilariously odd characters.
... Unfortunately, I can totally see why it wasn't picked up: I imagine animation like this takes a lot of time and money, and this show has a very bizarre sense of humor, and producers need to think about how a general audience would take such weird jokes like these.
Maybe we'll get Screw-on head sometime down the line, I'd love to see it get the love it deserves.
"Foolish mortal"

"Do I look mortal to you".
"Groin's looking out for your behind, Head." OMG.
WHY is it that shows like this don't get past a pilot episode and yet mind numbingly stupid shows get like 8 seasons?
+Raun Carswell because someone knows someone in the system. its who you know, not I your talented anymore.
Money. I was actually surprised to see Mignola's style animated at all. With all the complex shadows it looks like it would take a shitload to animate properly. Even in this pilot you can see some very obvious parts where they had to cut corners. The lips on human characters don't sync great and for a couple bits they would just bob an actor up and down.
It's also niche enough that it's unlikely it would ever attract the kind of ratings to make up for the production costs. On the studio's part it's way to large of a risks.
An idea has to be resource efficient as well as cool. Most of the really nice stuff your gonna see is ether one-off pilots like this, youtube animators who do it on their own time or movies made by big ass companies who can hire big ass celebrities to put asses in seats.
actually only a site had a voting thing to make this a show or not but sadly the votes were for no
the sad truth is that this is new and different and the general population doesnt like new and different
They cater stoners.
The picture of Ab Lincoln talking is really some Steam Punk stuff lol
If this was picked up when it aired, it would have given me a real reason to watch SyFy.
This is the greatest thing in my little life.
leyen how did it never get past the piolet episode?
i wonder the same, this is awesome
Mike Mignola Disliked it.
From what I understand, just as the comic was a one-shot that wasn't intended to be a continuing series (the story is based on a character that had originally been an idea Mignola had for an action figure), the pilot episode seems to have followed suit; meant to seem like the first in many installments, but not intended to be stretched that thin. It kinda adds to the greatness of it that this one self-contained story can be so fuckin amazing without any further context.
Why you a basic bitch
I think Emperor Zombie is one of the funniest and most entertaining characters I've ever seen. His lines are full of character!
"Pardon me if I say poppycock!"

Emperor zombie was just like "mine now." when he took patience...that is hilarious.
It's a perfect translation of the feel and look of Mike's comics into animated form, it looks amazing, who the heck in their right minds would cancel a show that looks this amazing.
It wasn't cancelled, it was never picked up because it would cost the network too much money to make, pretty sad

This was clearly far ahead of its time and needs to be rebooted ASAP.
Legit, I wish I could see a comic book accurate hellboy series animated like this, or maybe even a movie going over Baltimore's first Omnibus
A Hellboy series and Baltimore movie would be awesome!

I laughed so hard I just made water in my Pantaloons
Love to see a Hellboy and Screw-on Head crossover
I cry every time I remember that this isn't a show
I was thinking "Man, this looks really Hell Boy" and then I saw that it was Mike Mignola and I was like "ah". He wrote and illustrated the Hell Boy comics which are really really good! If you like this, you should check them out!
Hellboy comics are a bit more serious, just something to keep in mind
Also check out the original one shot comic that inspired this pilot
The comic had the better story & satire imo. Translating it onto the screen in the Mignola way however deserves praise on its own. It's criminal that there is not a Hellboy animated series though.
I haven't seen the movies, thanks for that I'll have to check em out. But Screw on head was just an one shot so this is the entire story, maybe they could have expanded on it n made it great, sad we may never know.
Why didn't this get picked up?!
*looks at the date it was aired*
Oh. It was back when the Sci-Fi Channel sucked. Had they made it a few years later, it would've had a better chance.
LOL WHAT?? That was the days of Battlestar, and Stargate, the only bad things on sci-fi then were the shitty horror movies and uwe boll movies they constantly insisted on airing.they didn't get shitty untill after Battlestar when they felt they could rest on their laurels, and got proven wrong, and they had to cancel all their shows and rush their endings.
They have only just started to get over that, and even now their shows mostly suck ass.
I just watched the greatest thing I've ever seen. 3X in a row. I had to watch it that many times, because it was THAT awesome. The dialogue, action, political slams, (though incredibly ancient) were amazing. It saddens me greatly that a show with this much promise will never be brought to it's full potential, and I can only imagine where the creators would have taken it.

We should start a petition to do a series on this.
Really surprises me this didn't get green lit.
No really, this is way too addictive. I mean, I saw this back at the zenith of SciFi in 2006, and now I have to watch it at least 7 times every time it comes up somewhere.
Screw-on Head = dieselpunk Iron Man.
Angry Squirrel Productions I always imagine him as somekind of modern iron golem

It’s funny because the trailer for this was on a dvd for an Iron man movie
I like how Emperor Zombie does the whole 'summoning ancient evil to conquer the world but the ancient evil has an agenda of its own' thing, except he is totally %100 down for letting the ancient evil control the world and he's like 'oh i get to be an advisor to an evil demigod? how excellent!'
Patience: that was before you allowed me to get horribly murdered...
Head: give me a break woman, I'm just a head
😂😂😂
Man, everything about this was just so perfect. The art style, the voice acting, the characters, the writing.
Shame there was never any more of it.
I can see why this wasn't made into a series. The lighting in every scene looks incredibly expensive.
So this is how Abraham Lincoln became a vampire hunter.
