Mould 45 - Revealing Moulds I found on Gumtree

  • This is the series where I reveal what is inside these pottery moulds I found on Gumtree.
The story goes, I found a listing on gumtree for pottery stuff. When I arrived the seller said 'I have all these pottery moulds would you like them as well?' and I said 'why not'. On the way home, I had the brain child to do a social media video series revealing what each mould is.
The mystery is in the fact that I had no idea what I had said yes to, some of the moulds are labelled and easy to tell but some of them are a little more difficult. The beauty is that all of the plaster moulds surprise you no matter the presentation of labels, titles or identifiable surface inside.
So come join me as I dive into this series and share the mould fun. I would love to hear any information you may have on the moulds and to let me know any stories you have that the moulds remind you of in the comments.
Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe!
    Heaps of love,
    Shelby

From what I remember, these bears would sit on a shelf with their legs dangling over the shelf. I graduated in 87. 😂 They would have been painted as Care Bears and sit with the legs dangling. You could make the holes and use C rings after the kiln.

For what it's worth you made them really cute, especially the hooded one :~) My family is big into antiques and I grew up with at least a few dingle-dangle knick-knacks, but usually they were wooden or cloth. I think you were right to embed the wire loop into the pieces that didn't have holes; if you wanted a bit more structure for the joints, using more wire embedded in the side as a loop instead of thread through the body would help them not wave around as much, but I don't blame you for not wanting to cast them again lol

The number of holes was kind of jaw-dropping. How cute of a result though. Yeah, I think they are meant to be windchimes (unless it's a shelf/mantlepiece decor, like someone else suggested, that just sits). My mom has a ceramic windchime, it has a bell shape at the top and a whole bunch of doves that hang from it at different lengths. It's not very musical, but still very pretty. --- LMAO! Yes. I see the...inappropriate...bear face. What an unfortunate snout! But, well, it is called a dingle dangle after all. XD --- I'm familiar with the acrylic method, because my grandmother used to take me to painting events at a studio near her house. I would pick out a premade piece, paint it with acrylic, then paint it with a "glaze", and get to take it home that day. It's nice for little kids who are impatient for results.

These things have a super nostalgic feeling to me and I don’t know why. And as you were painting mama bear’s kerchief blue, my mind was going “it should be red” for some reason? In the USA these type of knick knacks are sold as Shelf Sitters. Their legs and arms are connected with a metal loop like you made, one in the body and one in each arm or leg. Super impressed Shelby how you made lemonade out of that lemon of a mold. It is definitely a part of a different aesthetic from another time. The legs & arms would be tied in with leather or twine (rough string) and seated in the shelf. Good choice doing the acrylics a glaze would be even farther away from the original. Love how you explain and make things work so we can see your art. 💜

They look like little shelf sitters like these figurines. The legs are attached with cord that I imagine on these bears would go in one solid piece from one limb, straight through the back, then into the hole next to it and then right back out to the next limb. The cord would kinda look like a *U* where the bear’s body is facing away from you and is set in the bend of the U.

They were kind of like 3D paint by numbers with a list of the paint colors needed and a diagram indicating which color went where. I've had seen figures with similar "lose limbs" that are fastened to the body by ribbons or string, obviously you'd just poke the holes early on and attach the limbs once done with the final firing, but the figures are then meant to sit on a shelf and dangle their limbs. The ones I've seen have been pretty cute!

I haven't seen those bears. But I've seen similar ceramic pieces, like turtles with wiggly legs and head, that are similar. The turtles were on their bellies w/ the legs suspended in the shell, with wire hoops (like your bear legs) inside the shell, and little hooks on the legs.
I think that would be the best approach w/ these bears as well. Put the wire loops in the bottom of the body, and make hooks to go in the legs. You could even bend a piece of wire so each end is parallel, twist the open ends w/ pliers, and use that to make the hooks. The twists will give a better hold, and you could probably even use a little slip to glue it in place. Finally, if the hooks are long enough you can bend them around to close them.

I used to go to a paint your own pottery place. I get envious when I watch you do the glazes because as a kid, while I was in ceramics, we weren't allowed to use glaze. It was too difficult. The ones my instructor had didn't show colour until after they were fired, so when a kid used it, the colours would muddy and things wouldn't be in the right spot, and then the kids would get upset.

My first thought when I saw the different pieces was that you would use a thick wire or ribbon to go through both the front and back holes on the body and tie a knot at the back. Then the arms and legs would be attached to the front hole only. You would see the knot at the back but it would be "rustic." It might make the limbs sit better?
Good effort persevering with a pretty wacky mould! I must admit I LOLed at the inappropriate faces and the backwards legs! 😄

I think how you did them is cute, not my style but cute. Also, I totally saw what you mean about the face. I would suggest if you end up doing more danglies in the future that fishing line or some similar clear string might look better. That and having said string be longer might help keep the parts from trying to hide behind the piece. not 100% sure on that tho.

I have Christmas tree ornaments in that style. They have the metal hook on limbs and a hook on the main body and then string tied to each hook (hope that makes sense) means the limbs don't pull back and they dangle.

Considering where the limb attachments are and the bottom is flat, I believe these naughty bears sit on the edge of a shelf. My mom and an apple and pear whose limbs are attached with pipe cleaners and they sit on the edge with theirs legs hanging down.

Acrylic was a good choice, I was trying to figure out how you’d even fire them for glazing! I have little garden ornaments that were in my great aunts garden that are painted with acrylic and you definitely need to repaint them every few years. I’ll see if I can get a sealant next time, might last longer!

Also, I remember bears and dolls that were constructed similarly and the legs and arms were tied on with the fabric their clothes would have been. Like the papa bear’s legs would be tied on with denim scraps and the arms would have been tied on with scraps from a plaid shirt? But the holes are so small on these pieces, maybe a similar looking ribbon?

My daughter and I agree that the muzzle should maybe have a black line painted down and a little mouth painted on underneath and it would maybe indicate that it's an actual face LOL. 🥰

I think the bears are so sweet. But to attach the arms and legs I woulda try using memory wire or something similar. They remind me of the decor that you can put on your fireplace mantel edge and the legs hang off .. but idk if the bear body can stand up with the legs and arms attached.

These must have been shelf sitters that were popular in the 80s-90s. These critters were made in fruits and veggies, each with cute faces. “Anthropomorphic critters”

I've seen toys like these Dingle-dangle bears! usually there's a twine loop that goes through holes in the limbs and body so they hang loosely off of it.

If you get a mold like this again, try making two U shapes with your wire and hanging them thru each other. Then push the ends in to the legs and the body.

I would love to see you actually attach the arms and legs with slip like you do the handle of a coffee mug, and just have them in all different positions instead of the string thing🥰

I think the bears are meant to sitting and the feet and hands are to be attached to a straight piece of wire that will extend out the back and finished off . How I don't know.

The bears look like folk tale characters (Goldilocks) from another country, such as Germany or Russia. They aren't necessarily "cute" in the way many of us think of them, but they are interesting.
