  • It's a Texas institution with a national footprint: a chain of road stop convenience stores the size of the Lone Star State, with a smiling cartoon beaver mascot and a devoted following. Correspondent Luke Burbank travels to Buc-ee's to find out why customers are so driven to visit. (Is it the award-winning bathrooms?)

I've been to numerous Buc-cees and the experience is like nothing else. The employees are incredibly friendly and welcoming, the entire store is spotless, the public rest rooms are terrific and the barbecue brisket sandwiches are to die for. Once you've been to a Buc-cees, it's close to impossible to see one and not stop there. Buc-cees is destined for world domination of the gas station industry.

Never underestimate the power of cleanliness. Especially when it comes to restrooms, customers will go out of their way for a place that is comfortable and clean. That goes double for a world coming out of a pandemic. (And, yes, if you're a CEO who wants clean restrooms, you'll need to pay your employees enough to do a good job cleaning them.)

Many once amazing brands have had their value propositions diluted by overlord bean counters, and it's almost always hurt the bottom line. Whether you need gas or just a restroom break , you can’t help but stop there just for the food and snacks for that road trip. Take a trip north out on 75..,East on 20.... South or north on 35 and you will see one. When I travel out East I usually stop at the one in Terrell along the way. About an hour or so from the house. Used to live right by that one. I go filled up there and headed toward San Antonio down 35 I'd see another one about the time I needed gas and a "pit stop". Worth it for a trip, but I'd not really go out of my way much. They are nice. Maybe they will open the "smaller ones" in town. I think McDonald's employees make more than that. Some people think $20 an hour is way too much. We shouldn't even have to have a minimum wage the employer should $15 an hour at least to make tacos R burgers. But I'm sure that taco would cost 6 bucks easy. Rent was 300 for Apartments back then. Pretty soon the loaf of bread will cost $40 milk $70 all because the green deal. Which is not necessary. We were on a road trip to Texas in 2019 when we discovered Buc-ee’s. What a hoot. On a Florida road trip in 2021, Buc-ee’s was a planned part of the itinerary.
Our excitement exploded when Buc-ee’s announced they had acquired land to open a location near the intersection of I-40 and I-85 in Orange County NC…about 10 miles from my house.
Problems arose with the county commissioners of Orange County. It’s said that communism has been debunked pretty much worldwide except for Cuba, North Korea, China, Russia and Orange County NC. The zoning that was required to allow construction to begin was not allowed. The pol’s infinite wisdom cited noise, and the fact that fossil fuels were dying as a means to power transportation. (Not kidding…they actually said that). The Buc-ee’s folks tried everything to work with the commissioners, but their efforts were to no avail.
The end came, and as the Buc-ee’s people left town without a deal, they wrote an open letter to the community. The best line was they were glad Orange County already had too many $15 per hour entry level jobs that they didn’t need any more. What a bunch of pinheads…but they were answering to their constituents.
Hopefully there will be a friendlier spot for a Buc-ee’s somewhere in NC in the future.

There’s a special beauty is seeing a compassionate business thrive! So nice to have a new Buc-ees in the area. Some of my coworkers in healthcare are thinking of leaving the greedy healthcare industry to work at Buc-ees!

Hands down the best convenience store chain in the country!! Clean restrooms, gas is always decently priced, food is amazing, and employees are happy with their jobs and it shows in their stellar attitudes towards customers. THIS is how you do it. Bucee's, HEB, and Whataburger........ Texas friendly thru and thru

As a kid who grew up in Freeport Texas in the early 80’s, we would stop at Buccees on the way to Surfside beach for gas, the cheapest ice, a 12 pack of silver bullets for my dad, snacks and soft drinks for us! I am so happy for the success of Buccees! I now reside in South Carolina where the first Buccees just opened in Florence. Can’t wait to visit! I’m a life long customer all the way back to their original two stores and I’m in awe of how much it’s grown!

Bu-cee’s certainly has become the go to place on road trips for a pit stop. It, along with H‑E‑B and Whataburger, show truly how great the Texan businesses can be. I hope it stays awesome forever.

Love Buc-cee's. We were driving to San Antonio and saw the billboard for it. My wife looked it up on her phone and after reading about it online said "we're stopping there." Best.Stop.Ever. Brisket sandwiches are great. Always have time to stop at one when we are traveling.

What a great American company. Takes care of their employees and customers. Reminds me of another company - Costco. We need more companies like this. God bless him and he needs to come to California ASAP!

One thing I've noticed since Buc-ees has become a thing here in Texas along most major highways between cities is now the amount of nasty bathrooms at other gas stations has gone way down. Kind of like Elon has changed the auto industry, Buc-ees has changed the gas station bathroom.
