    People tend to forget that range is hugely affected by the amount of noise in your environment. If you're flying in a relatively RF-quiet environment you can expect to get far more range than if you're in a noisy one. This probably goes a long way towards explaining why some folk get good range and some get poor range, even when using identical setups. The other thing to remember is that lower frequencies (868/900MHz) carry further so can be affected by noise sources that are further away than would be the case with 2.4GHz. Clearly there's not a hell of a lot of activity on these lower frequencies around where you fly Nikola, so you are lucky. I suspect that there are some places in the world where you'd be lucky to get to the end of a football field before things started getting bad.
    By the way, why did you edit out the parts of the video where you collided with manned aircraft and brought down airliners with your "drone". We're constantly being told that this *will* happen if you fly over 400ft AGL and/or BVLOS so we know you edited the video ;-)

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  Před 5 lety +24

      That is true... but I get the same results flying around the city where things are anything BUT quiet! Thing is... 868Mhz is legal around here and there is nothing on it... 915Mhz is not exactly permitted... but nothing is happening there as well! So yeah... I do enjoy that fact and the range it allows! Will be doing some tests on a racing copter and lower to the ground soon... so we will see how things will change! And yes, Bruce, you are correct... so many casualties during these flights... it is insane... and yet... I've downed so many piloted aircraft with the Talon GT... but it still survives... that ZOHD foam is damn tough... goes through planes like a knife through butter at room temperature! ;) :D

      I think that part of the spectrum is going to be progressively wiped out as more IOT (LoRa) devices come on line. Even though their packet sizes are generally fairly small and transmitted in chirp spread spectrum, there is still only a limited bandwidth available, especially with potentially tens of thousands or millions in a city and up to 30km radius beyond.
      It depends initially on uptake, but LoRa is making its way into literally everything in Australia and the world, as phone picocells, gateways and end nodes, sensor devices etc. They are already in everything from from bus shelters to parking meters and anything imaginable in between, the only escape may be a reduced density in remote area's, (until farmers start monitoring crops in live feed grid array's) but many systems are also now being utilised in rural area's for their amazing long range potential with secure end to end performance and running at automated, potentially higher power levels. As Bruce says, the interference can carry further, especially as the sources are designed that way..
      Given time it will inevitably take out 433mHz, 2.4gHz and 5.8gHz. Basically all ISM bands are up for grabs once saturation point hits.

      That is the penalty for the people that fly around and inside the airports and approach area. I am also an air traffic controller and if the pilot spots one and he decides not to proceed with his approach you have no idea how complicated situation this becomes and sometimes safety wise dangerous. Now outside the aerodrome zone, up to 1km altitude, (i am using km but is not the measurement of altitude in all the countries) you might encounter fire fighting aircrafts, police aircrafts, search and rescue and small aircrafts / microlights. Those aircrafts are in higher risk and usually are in priority if they are having operations A. Noone will ever find you if you crash on them but lets be responsible adults here and try not to endager other people or damage property. Unless you will fly long range no need to go that high and you can plan your route in "safe" areas

      @@alasdair4161 Correct... which is why I believe that if governments are going to make us register (and pay for the privilege of flying drones/RCmodels then they should set aside some dedicated spetrum for control and video links. I don't mind paying... *IF* I'm getting something for my money but the current strategy of turning a freedom into a privilege and charging for it is unacceptable.

    Low RF clutter environment, low wind, warm, dry conditions...it all helps...Oh, and flying at 11,000 feet probably helps with the distance too...lol...Agreed on the DJI Camera, that's pretty impressive image stabilisation...Looks like you need to turn the Roll gain down a bit..

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  Před 5 lety +1

      Well... RF was clear... but wind was not low... and those clouds in the second flight were quite wet!!! Yes, will also have to turn the roll down a bit for sure, will do before the next outing! Altitude does help... but that is a way to get max distance from the battery as well! Besides... it is really hard to do low altitude range testing around here... it is all hills and mountains!

    • @JasononaBike
      @JasononaBike Před 4 lety

      @@ArxangelRC Maybe it has an issue or has something to do with the encoding. There's some clear distortion when your voice reaches higher pitches. Could also just be mic positioning - is it possible that as you speak you're blowing into the mic at all? Cheap windscreens/foam covers do a great job correcting for that.
      Just googled it and apparently the Rode mic can have issues with electrical and radio interference depending on the phone.
      This mic + a couple of foam covers has been pretty great to me: www.amazon.com/Sony-ECMCS3-Omnidirectional-Stereo-Microphone/dp/B0058MJX4O
      I've seen LGR use it on his channel, too. Surprisingly robust $20 mic. Wouldn't easily connect to a cell phone though.

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  Před 4 lety

      Well for LiIon the ESC should cut ideally at around 2.8v per cell... which for instance the HobbyWing ESCs do when set to the "low" voltage cut off option! I think it was the ESC that cut off... but it cut off around 2.8 or 3v, which is OK... the battery is indeed empty at that time anyway! Problem was an empty battery... not the ESC cut off!

This will also allow me to eliminate my tx as the issue too, since I did once power on the R9M module without the antenna on but switched it off really quickly.

      @@ArxangelRC I have to admit I know nothing about Bulgaria. But looking at the Jeppesen charts the ATS routes seem to be a bit higher than for instance in germany (often more than 8000 feet) but that is nowhere near 8 km. I looked around a bit and FL260 was class C airspace pretty much everywhere. No way any model flying would be permitted there, even in Bulgaria.Mostly it is above 10000 feet, sometimes down to 7000 - not much different than any other country. And below I guess it is all airspace G but I have to look up the regulations there.

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  Před 5 lety

      Well... regardless of the airspace... there is very little piloted air traffic below the passenger planes!

    • @rainerzufall689
      @rainerzufall689 Před 5 lety

      @@ArxangelRC That may be but there is traffic and I am pretty sure that there are designated areas for model flight (like in germany). No way just flying in airspace G can be legal between aircraft that actually carry people - maybe under 500 feet since aircraft are not allowed under 500 feet.

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  Před 5 lety

      Thing is... around here... I am safer flying above 500 feet, because the few planes we've seen around these parts over the years... have always made sure to come and do a fly by 10 meters above our heads!!!!!!!!!! Besides... we always listen in on the radio control traffic frequencies... and trust me... there is nobody around these parts when I fly!

      @@ArxangelRC lol, what's wrong with starting from where you usually fly, all you need for Frensel zone is about 400-500meters of open space in the direction you'll be flying in. DL at 1W should be enough for 5-6km below 100m in a city on stock antennas, in the countryside i've flown around 6km at only 15-20meters after 6km had to go up to 100m till about 11ish km. Around 130meter till about 19-20km after that had to go uppppp :) Me and my cousin had almost identical results in the same area/time he had DLv3, I had DTF UHF with openlrsng. Both on dipole antennas. Crossfire 915mhz at 2watts (keep away from ur balls thought) should yeld the same results afaik, of course if you hit inband rf noise ymmv :) good luck and plz plz plz don't you screw it up for all of us by hitting another airliner ;)

    • @ArxangelRC
      @ArxangelRC  Před 5 lety

      Hahahahahaha, there are no airliners to hit... so you can put that concern to rest! Thing is... with all the hills around here... even if I move 3kms in some direction... I have to go up 300-500 meters above the take off location so I wouldn't hit the terrain at 3kms... and then I have to keep going up so I don't end up behind the hill, which will take me higher over the take off location and even higher above the ground, because now there is a hill between me and the plane! It is not simply a slightly sloping area that spans for many kms.... the terrain is quite jagged!
