CAN YOU HANDLE SUB-ZERO VAN LIFE IN ALASKA?
Vložit
- čas přidán 14. 07. 2024
- We are Alaska residents and traversing Canada and the Alaska Highway in the midst of the 2nd wave of covid. Van life camping in below zero temperatures is extreme, but our DIY Mitsubishi Fuso FG140 4x4 RV was built for these winter conditions.
In this video we reach the Alaska Highway in Tok, AK and drive our expedition vehicle to the Canadian Border in Beaver Creek. Thankfully after some questions the border agent lets us into Canada. The days are short at these high latitudes, we drive into the night and pull into a gas station truck stop to boondock camp in Haines Junction, YT.
***Our trip south through Canada falls under essential travel because we going down to the Lower 48 for work.

Hmmm.... as a Canadian who is under lockdown and can't leave my house to visit my beautiful province, I truly hope you appreciate and show respect for the fact that Canada has allowed you to pass through. So welcome but take this serious and pass through quickly without interacting with Canadians as best you can!
We are very thankful for Canada allowing us passage. It’s mentioned in every video.
Avoiding Canadians is easy because generally speaking we don’t like any humans that much. Lol.
Thanks for watching.
@@outliersoverland I thought I was the only human that didn't like other humans! I appreciate your honesty. I have enjoyed your videos through the years and look forward to more safe travels.
What are you talking about Forester ? Because they have what it takes to undertake a journey like this and you in Canada do not ???
It didn’t take much for me to adjust to pandemic life.
An individual is fine but people as a herd no thank you.
@@mpower6004 Yes that is exactly my point.
Kruggerands - how 1980s, but some of us get it old farts get it. Ben, you are absolutely right, cold weather can be deadly. It ain't about being scared it's about being smart. Hope you guys had fun in Canada. I grew up in Detroit and it used to be fun to go to Canada, not so much any more. It's got nothing to do with Canada, it's the getting back into the US that's a pain. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
He didn’t ask about bullions...
Great minds think alike about the weather conditions.
Amazing to vicariously experience crossing the border to Canada. Best video I’ve ever seen! Be safe! From San Antonio,Texas
Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it.
In the early 70s, our family drove from Virginia to California, then to Anchorage. Camping in tents and our van.
Liked and subscribed.
Another great video very detailed and well produced. Love the drone footage. I also love the Pizza. I was watching this evening when you posted and I ordered me a pepperoni pizza. Love you guys and always besafe. Thanks for allowing me to tag along.
Thanks. Unfortunately that is the last drone footage of the Canadian journey. Even though we have the Mavic Mini that’s legal to fly in Canada, that would not be respectful during our transit.
You must also have smell a vision!
glad your trip through went well, maybe soon you can stay and have fun! safe travels....
So nice to just be out on the road! I have to admit, I laughed when Ben threw the water in the air and it fell flat😂. I'm so glad you guys made it across the border. Safe travels!
Thanks. It feels great to be traveling again.
Yes that was an epic fail.
Well that brought back memories. I changed my alternator in the NAPA parking lot in the winter at Tok!
Good memories!!!!
Yes , Ben and Rebecca forging ahead all the way toward the lower 48 , great job .
Just arrived here and really enjoyed the video - subscribing and thanks so much for both understanding the need for our border regulations and encouraging others to be as relaxed and respectful as yourselves! Looking forward to watching more and trust me we Canucks are looking forward to the day when we can all travel back and forth again!!!!
Wow. That scenery is breathtaking. Cant imagine those temps when its 38oc here . Hot humid and the sweat never ends. Cheers from Down Under.
I have driven the hwy 27 times now and never get tired of it. In 1975 I drove up in march with my VW camper it was 20-25 below zero and couldn't get a hotel for the night, at midnight finally stopped at Muncho lake and they had a plug in so I could plug the van in to power to run a little heater inside. Wind was blowing 30-40 mph. I damn near froze to death finally getting up and going in to the restroom of the lodge and sleeping in the men's bathroom for the night. But would do it again in a heart beat as the trip was challenging and so beautiful.
the west coast sure is blessed with beautiful scenery. sights like that are rare on the east coast.
You two are so lucky to cross the border. Drive safe. Those roads look so icy. Love the scenery and the animals. Thanks for letting us know what they are, as we dont see them here in PA. Looking forward to the next video.
Great photography, especially the Alaska Highway. Thanks.
Thanks. I wish we could have captured more, but between the cold and needing to cover a lot of miles it was challenging.
Like how you always names the places you go thru, this way I can follow y'all. thanks.
Thanks. Glad it helps.
Hi Guys its good to see you back on the road again i wish you a very safe and happy journey
Thanks. It’s feels good to be rolling again.
That was very interesting, especially crossing the border. And great drone shots! I'm from Michigan and I know cold...but this is a whole new level.
You know I just stumbled on your video my dad was an engineer/surveyer on the Alcan Hwy in WW 2 he had flat feet so that made him 4F which meant he couldn't go into the army. So he served the War Effort on the Hyway. I'm now 70 and I'm planning to drive that Hwy this summer if I get a Class motor home. My dad shared many stories about the Hwy. I'll send you a colorized photo of him and his crew of surveyors. One thing he told me was that if a heavy piece of equipment got stuck they would bury it because they did not have time to save it because of the war.
Wow. He was part of history!
I hope you enjoy your journey.
Thanks for watching.
My Dad and his brothers worked on the Trail of 42 as well. Well worth the trip and effort. Enjoy the trip.
Your drone shots...wow! That vehicle is a beast!
Thanks. Unfortunately that’s the last drone flight of this trip. It could be interpreted as having fun....
By the way great drone footage , and breathtaking scenery .
This trip along tbe highway seems so very peaceful. I'd love to drive it in the summer.
It is amazing all times of the year, except covid season.
@@outliersoverland I believe it but don't think I could handle -30 degrees😊
When I drove through Tok in 1977 the pizza place wasn’t there! Good vlog guys!
Good memories!!!
Glad you made it into Canada. We were refused entry in August and will be staying in Wasilla at our home for the winter. Hopefully we can travel down south next fall, but we will see.
Always a great Vid guys all the Best be safe

Wow. Interesting journey South. Good luck guys.
Glad you enjoyed the video. It was an interesting trip this time.
@@outliersoverland I’m sure it was. You must be a lot warmer right now. Funnn.
That was beautiful.. ty.. would love to see a close up of the reindeer when you can lol.. safe travels..
Thank you.
Over our 6 years making videos we have made two videos of our caribou hunting trips , but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
We went through -60 once in Fairbanks and it was truly different. It hurt to even inhale! This was decades ago and I still remember the feeling!
FWIW We fueled at that Shell both ways to and from Alaska, even Camped at their Campsite next door and washed the Motorhome and tow car ( in the campsite, with permission of course), after coming down from the "Top of the World" highway. Thankyou.... Shell Station!
Tok is an amazing resource for the traveler.
Great information going into Canada
Thanks. Glad you liked it!
I'm amazed your drone worked in that intense cold ❄️🌬️🌫️
You must have made it to the lower 48 by now. Hope your drive was uneventful. Good luck with your work. Stay safe.
We loved Fast Eddy in Tok. I think we ate there 6 times the summer we were there. Safe travels.
I agree I lived 8 years with winters being windchill -20. 30 of my 40 years of marriage I have lived in the southwest and yes it is a dry heat. I love it here. I grew up in the mountains with snow.
There can be many places one calls home in their life.
Thanks for watching.
I enjoyed it. Really nice.
Thanks!
I'm impressed you got the drone out. That must have been a cold procedure.
I would love to take that trip. The scenery is amazing. Y'all be safe
Under most circumstances it’s an amazing trip. Thanks.
Fantastic to see you are on the road again. I will be excited to see this trip.
It took us three months but we have our exemption to enter Canada and expect to do so in another 10 days or so. We still know that it is still up to the border agent's decision when we arrive. We will see if they let us in.
Thank you. We wish you safe travels.
hope it went smoothly! Did you get through?
@@eirika2001 Actually it went amazingly smoothly. There are six lines and you normally wait half a half hour or so to get to the front of your line. When we arrived there was only one line open and no cars at it. The border agent took her time with us but handled everything from our pickup window and let us in after reading our exemption papers, studying our quarantine plan, asking health and food questions warning us to obey the regulations.
It would take a good 4-wheel drive vehicle boy y'all picked a good one good video guys
Thanks. We love our camper. Living in Alaska dictates that we need 4x4.
I sold Mitsubishi Trucks in Cincinnati back in the 80's and 90's......! * ! * ! You cut
yourself short on your camper. Cabover chassis(s) allow much longer bodies
with more rear overhang. Additional room would come in handy on long trips.
We are actually the 3rd owners. If we can build a new habitat we’d add a couple feet and taper it to the departure angle.
Wow. We thought Tasmania was cold. Loved video 'girls from Oz'. 😊😊😊😊😊🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks. Stay warm down there!
About a month ago we had a cold snap here in Winnipeg, it was at -40 below felt like -50 and it was like this for 2 weeks lol it was cold lol
Thanks. I want to take my camper down in March, and now I know what I'm up against at the border. I might have to ship it, or come up with a good, believable reason to go down.
You might need to get a job in the L48 that doesn’t provide housing.
Sweet..
Next time take care guys, cheers
you are lucky don't stop lol 🇨🇦🛠️🇨🇦🛠️
I'm glad that you guys made it through Canada!!🎆That second and third mug/cup of water thrown into the air was pretty impressive!!🥤❄❄❄That pizza looked amazing🍕!!
Yes. That was a funny fail.
A very nice video, thank you for the "be respectful" comment when you crossed into Canada. It would be nice if more people practiced that line of thinking.
Glad you like it.
You’re welcome, we are very thankful for being granted passage there Canada.
We didn’t even fly our drone there because it could be interpreted as recreation.
@@outliersoverland they've gone off the deep end in the Great White North with oppression. How sad.
@@DeHuwite nope we are simply protecting our own citizens, we are a sovereign nation and you have no integral right to come into our country, it is a privilege. You folks were given easy access to go to and from Alaska at the beginning of the border closure and several asshats decided to lie and pretend they were headed to Alaska or the lower 48 and then went off on vacations in Alberta and BC. THAT is why there are so many issues and regulations at the border now. As Canadians we really appreciate folks like this couple who are respectful and pleasant. We love our US visitors and neighbours but now is not a time for visiting or touristing.
@@DeHuwite If I showed up at your house and wanted to come in, and you asked why, would you be oppressing me? No .. you would just be protecting your property.
@@eirika2001 I know Windsorites who were coming here for work everyday. I don't know how shut down it is for them to come here now, but I agree that these are different times with the virus and all. I hope it gets better soon.
Boy, that immigration officer was 't screwing around... Yikes! he was about to ask for your shirt size and inseam sizes!!
Edit: I haven't driven in Alaska (been to Shishmaref on a assignment) but totally agree with you to have a full tank of gas as often as possible specially in unknown and unpredictable weather. Totally the right thing to do.
It’s was intense. I think he had a script that he had to go through before letting us in.
@@outliersoverland Felt intense for sure!
I miss Alaska , was stationed at Fort Richardson Alaska, army
Thanks for your service.
We were on Ft.Rich too, early '70s.
Its cold out there.... -15 we are just starting to have fun in Canada.
I stopped at that same gas station in TOK twice...driving to Alaska and driving out of Alaska
Fueling up there is critical.
@@outliersoverland I was stationed at Ft. Richardson and I actually drove from Whitehorse all the way to anchorage only stopping for gas and bathroom breaks
Thanks for your service!
@@outliersoverland thank you
Man that is intense, he asked so many questions.
There were a lot more due to the virus situation, but yes very intense.
@@outliersoverland next they will want an a#@s swab...did you pan for some gold while you were there?
@@outliersoverland They were nicer than every US border agent I met, even before Covid.
There has been a lot of unlawful (vacation) travel into Canada from the US, so they have upped their game at the border, which is nice too see. Still, after watching a documentary about the Spanish flu well before this pandemic, I thought, well thank goodness we would never be as stupid as they were in 1918. Having public gathering etc because we would know better. I could not have been more wrong.
Thanks so much fir sharing I can’t even imagine that cold be safe cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
You’re very welcome.
Stay warm down there.
Hey guys HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thank you for the update, and that was nice of the border agent to let you continue on your journey. I will be traveling to Anchorage from the lower 48 next week for work, BTW, is the engine (gas) that hard to start in that weather?
You mean there's a truck that can actually drive on plowed roads in freezing temperatures? Say it isn't so! Jesting aside, I'm happy for the both of you and your adventure!
Not all campers can survive this climate though.
Thanks.
Canadian border has been closed for months, for non essential travel. You realize you have to quarantine during your time in Canada - typically 14 days, no contact with anyone, no friends, no shopping. I had to stay inside for 14 days, food had to be delivered to my door. You are lucky you are free to travel through Canada to a work destination in the US - what work are you going to? Do you consider travel to Mexico - CZcams episodes once a week - employment?
We accepted multiple videography gigs down south and yes CZcams does contribute to our household income.
We are legitimate business owners with LLCs, state / local business licenses, and we even pay taxes.
They didn't quarrentine a minute! Scammed they're way through!
@@happydays59 hey that is not true - they had to follow our rules and laws. The requirements are structured so that they are essentially self isolating for the entire trip - no staying at hotels or campgrounds, no trips into stores, no restaurant meals and you have a set time to get from one border to the next. As long as folks follow those rules they aren't exposing anyone to anything. There the kind of travelers we want in these times - they had essential reasons to go through. I don't love anyone crassing right now but folks like these are respecting us and our laws. :)
We always found Fast Eddy’s service to be slo-w-w-w!
I know the Border Patrol are doing their job on both sides but man it will be nice for all when they can get back to just looking for drugs, firearms, wanted felons and etc. last time I went to Canada was a while ago and it just took about 5 minutes and showed my state drivers license and insurance. Nothing is easy anymore. Be safe.
Don’t forget about looking for contraband produce.
We miss it too Badger, we really do. Used to be able to take a day trip to Washington or a weekend shopping trip...I can't wait til it is safe again!
real talk fast eddies food is so good, no matter what you get.
My husband and I stayed at their little hotel as we came into the state and had their burgers and a few other things and it is SOOOOO good. If you are driving through dont skip on the Fast Eddies food.
🤗🤗
Hi!! I love your channel!! Can you go more in depth about how your rig is different and better suited than a car or RV for this trip in winter?
Oh my. Well there’s a lot of features.
We have 2” of insulation.
Dual pane windows,
The engine heats the camper when driving, which is critical.
We can also keep our engine from freezing at night with a hydronic heater.
Hope this helps.
@@outliersoverland Thank you! Yeah- those are some big differences. I’d love to do this drive next winter to visit my bf in anchorage without having to rely on hotels, but I don’t have a rig like yours. I’ve done the drive in summer and it was splendid. But looks like the cold would do me in. Thanks for the info!!
Famous Fast Eddie's in Alton Illinois you have to check out
It seriously looks like you have the entire road to yourself for this entire trek.
At times we did.
Except for sharing it with wildlife.
Thanks for watching.
Man, that tension at the border.
It's like when Canadians cross the American border
There should be a lot more tension!!
Amen~!
Thank you.

Question, and my apologies if this was already covered in another video and I missed it. What kind of tires are you guys using in your rig? If winter tires, do have a summer set?
Safe travels!

I wish for a partner like this for this kind of trip.
Glad they let you through and I know you will be/were respectful of Canadian laws. One thing I’m sorry about though, is the terrible fact that I missed Fast Eddies all four times that I went through Tok! 😥
Well you have to make another trip now...
I'll tell you a secret about at the pumps they try to keep it at a certain temperature underneath the ground so it's constantly making that price and changes and excetera excetera but it's better at even a lower temperature cuz it might reach it depends on how far things going to need to ground that they buried right to make you fuel up
Beautiful welcome to Canada .....love your video 🇨🇦
Thanks for granting us passage!
Amazing Guys i am new here
Welcome. Thanks for watching.
Signpost forest! Welcome to Canada. Hopefully you travelled through safely.
Crazy knows crazy...
Dry heat dry cold just like Colorado. But in the winter Colorado never used to but it does nowadays gets really high winds so it feels like 40 below it's turned into Wyoming Winters! Well that's not true they get to 40 below all the time and with the wind is feels like 60 below. Thank God I don't live in either place anymore I don't miss snow and cold one bit! Although natural thermal pools are nice when it's snowing... you won't like it either 30 years from now when you're full of arthritis not fun! lol
Wyoming is pretty desolate. I’d love to explore it further because I like less populated places.
I can’t lie, I’m becoming less tolerant of Seward’s wet winters.
@@outliersoverland lol yes Wyoming is desolate. I'ma Denver girl originally my first ex-husband was from there. But let me tell you a few places in Wyoming that are really nice Saratoga is one it's a resort town if you're ever there you have to have lunch @the wolf Hotel. They have the BEST thickest BUFFALO STEAKS you'll ever eat in your life. And they have What's called the hobo pool. It is a thermal pool that is gated like a swimming pool. And guess what? it is still FREE to this day! The pool is so hot you literally have to inch your way into it. Feels great when it's snowing and cold. I was only 19-24 living there but still it made my bones and joints feel wonderful and that's before I had any problems with my bones and joints!!lol Medicine bow area is pretty too. Laramie is a cool little place too probably because it's a college town. Cheyenne of course is known for they're big rodeos. And Yellowstone of course Jackson Hole Wyoming is really pretty they have thermal pools just all over the place you can walk out to and sit in. So I hope this helps my dear if you ever go up there I prefer Jackson Hole in the summer! Oh and please be on lookout for antelope they run in HERDS of 40 or MORE they seem to come out of nowhere.Well I guess if you're on a winding Mountain Road. Anyway I hope these tips help if you're ever down that way. But like I said for me I'm glad I don't live in either places anymore and haven't for decades. My 👪 what's left of them still live in Colorado.p.s. I love you videos. This is always something I would have wanted to do. So instead I just had to end up moving to places staying a few years and then moving again. People used to think I was a wanted person or something because I moved so much. LOL when you don't have kids you can do that!!! And you have the type of job you can work anywhere you live too!
Fast Eddie's in Canada (London, Ontario ) is a fast-food restaurant that sells cheap burgers lol.
omg minus 30! That's crazy.
Yes it is!!!
And it’s no fun.
Thanks for watching.
Good luck getting through the Yukon and British Columbia. Have a safe trip
Thanks. It was thankfully uneventful.
If you want to eliminate that ice from the uprights, open a small hole in the top and bottom side and inject it with expandable polyurethane and bye, that problem will not rust.
Interesting.
Thanks for the tip.
Aluminum frames conduct the best!
Yes it sweats and forms a glacier.
Shocked you were allowed to transit via Abbotsford. I thought they were going to tell you to cross by Lethbridge
Is it possible to pass through Tok without stopping at Fast Eddies? I know it isn’t for me either!
Wow they grilled you pretty good at the US-CAN border! I’ve never been asked that many questions about where I live and how long, they must have ramped it up with COVID.
We need a wall!!!
You have to fuel up remember that okay you've made it very prevalent to have some gas tanks maybe on top or in the back or something extra canisters because the prices change so I'm saving you money just suggesting that that's my opinion though I'm sticking with it
I've heard our gas is very expensive compared to yours - it is hard to do a quick compare since we are in litres and you are in US gallons but you are so right, a dollar's worth of gas goes further in the US!
Our 🇨🇦 gov't is very strict about American's entering our country because of the absolute dismal state the U.S is in concerning Covid. We take the pandemic seriously and work together to overcome it and return to normalcy
As a resident of the US in the "hot bed" area of Los Angeles, i can tell you that the "dismal state" you mentioned, is mostly main stream media hype. Reality is much different that the doom and gloom being reported.
@@r0xjo0 take your head out of your ass, we are not stupid here!
I'm so happy for y'all being allowed to cross the border into Canada . Safe travels & stay well . Ben you look great clean shaven .
Well your living the life travel where you can stay away from urban centers drive sail fly around the world do what you can beautiful rig.
I’d like to know what has been done to your van in order for it to handle the extreme cold where are you live. Here in Texas we have to have extreme air conditioning!!! But this being February 11, 2021, we’re expecting down to 1° on Monday night February 15, 2021
