PLEASE read the details below if you are planning your own roadtrip here :)
Aboriginal held land in Australia is private property and to travel through, you need permission often in the form of a permit. For Kiwirrkurra Country, a permit allows you to travel along the main road, into community and camp at approved campsites. Access into any other areas aside from this is still prohibited. More information on traveling through Kiwirrkurra country can be found at www.tjamutjamu.com/travelling.... The Kiwirrkurra Traditional Owners thank you for respecting their culture and country.
ALSO! If you are looking to buy Aboriginal art, make sure you buy from the most ethical sources which are community artist-owned art galleries and collectives. For Kiwirrkurra art you can purchase through Papunya Tula Artists (papunyatula.com.au/). For other Central Australian Aboriginal art, visit Desart for more information at desart.com.au/ Thank you :)

    Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here: • 100th COUNTRY DOCUMENTARY
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.
We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)
So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.
Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this channel to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.
4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time!
After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time international traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)
We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. 😊🎥🌎 Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey!

Another fabulous picture of traveling and enjoying the outback. Will share a picture later of me on (in the 1960s Ayers Rick). Very happily to see the respect now given to the Aboriginal People and their culture. Back then these people were not even counted in the census. Looking forward to your rail adventure.

I haven’t completely watched the first part, but I do look forward to watching the second part after having finished watching the first. When I think of equivalents to what within Mainland Australia is the Outback, but in the Americas, I think of the Bolivian salt flats, much of Montana and Wyoming, and huge parts of Northern Ontario (particularly those well off the beaten path, and if not within Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay or the small town of Kenora) for starters.

Stunning episode, well done K and N. It can't be emphasised enough that a trip like this requires permits, as mentioned. You can't just drive into Aboriginal land and communities without them. Many communities are actually totally off limits. And Fun Fact... the camels were mostly brought over to help build the railways through the outback and the cameleers that came with them were called Afghans, even though they were from all over the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. That's where you get The Ghan, the famous outback train. Many of the cameleers were also the first Muslims in Australia and their descendents are still around today. The camels are now the only wild camels left in the world and they fetch huge prices if shipped back to the Middle East.

@@hamsie98 No, it isn't. "First nations" is a Canadian term that specifically refers to the Canadian native peoples who, before European settlement, actually had nations and were indeed the first people to reside on the continent.
Australian indigenous people, on the other hand, neither ever had any nations, nor were they even the first people to settle on the Australian continent. Therefore, referring to Australian aboriginies as "first nations people" doesn't make any sense.

Just found your page and watched the journey to the most remote town in Australia. A wonderful experience for me. I was a Fulbright teacher for one year in 1967-68. Spent time in Adelaide, Mt. Gambia and Darwin. I’ll be following your adventures with great interest. Safe travels and wishing you peace and happiness.

Hi Kara and Nate! When driving on dirt roads you will have noticed the corrugations. The accepted wisdom is that you either go really slowly and gently go through each dip or, you go really fast and try to skip from peak to peak. There are so many dirt roads in Australia that in the early 1960's there was a famous incident when an Australian rally driver was driving in Europe. His French navigator kept telling him to go faster on the paved roads. When they got to the dirt they did not slow down as this was the Aussie's wheelhouse. He was awaiting instructions but none came. He looked over and the Frenchman was cowering under the seat. He was not used to dirt roads being driven on that fast... Enjoying the series!!!

And, here we go…another masterclass in content creation. You two are the best - thanks! And…note to self…if Nate says it takes X hours to do something or go somewhere, make it 2X. Though if Kara is driving, make it 1/2X (😱).

Hi Kara and Nate, Welcome back to this amazing land of ours I hope you enjoy your stay and thank you for you respectful representation of our beautiful country. Nate the broken down cars, well it would probably cost more for a tow truck out there than the cars are worth. Don't you just love the cost of groceries here in Australia? Many families are struggling here right now because of the cost of living so it was a joy to watch this one and escape for 36 minutes.

At the end of this I got goosebumps of joy, just so happy that you’re having so much fun exploring the back blocks of my home country!! (I’m in Adelaide).. Everything you experienced on this trip is what we Aussies are so familiar with. The long dusty, corrugated orange dirt roads that go forever, the big starry skies, the flies, the camels, the lizards and the wonderful aboriginal communities… I’m so glad you’re here and we now get to tag along with this Epic adventure!

One thing I've learned to do with the outdoor fridge on my RV while I'm driving somewhere - put towels in it. Empty space - roll up and stuff a towel in it. Bonus points if they're slightly damp too - they will help the fridge to not have to work as hard. This looked like a fantastic adventure. Thanks for sharing!
