- Welcome to a day in sub zero van life where we are sharing daily travel routines and winter camping at a Walmart. Our overland rv truck camper is equipped for off grid extreme travel, but we are happy to reach warmer climates. We are sharing an experience dumping our cassette toilet at a rest area and talking about how we pass the time when traveling.
***Our trip south through Canada falls under essential travel because we going down to the Lower 48 for work.

I would love to do this but my wife would be miserable. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your adventures.
Thanks. It’s a very challenging lifestyle but there are a lot of amazing aspects to it though.
Ever considered getting a divorce?
@@edenbreckhouse nope
Tell sweetie that you'll miss her!!
Same but my hubby would not sleep in a camper.
A bit of irony. We are watching this while in quarantine in Canada, waiting to visit our children and grandchildren. We are the loyal subscribers who watch every post you make. We love living vicariously thru your travels. Thank you and please keep them up.
Definitely ironic.
Thanks for being a good neighbor and letting us pass through.
@@outliersoverland Sorry, I miscommunicated. I am an American required to quarantine for two weeks before visiting my kids and grandkids.
LOL at the exploding egg. Can't wait to see it in full. Enjoying the travel videos again. Stay warm and safe.
It was painfully funny.
Hey guys! As a Canadian, I want to thank you for your absolute respect of our Covid requirements. I can say with certainty that not everyone does. Hope you have safe travels!
You’re very welcome.
It’s the least we could do.
We are just thankful for being able to pass through.
@@outliersoverland Please come back, when this is done and dusted!
I can guarantee we will be back. We live in Alaska!!!
Hopefully next time we can drive slower.
That is a cool looking rig - I am excited to go back thorough your older videos to see it's story. :) I spent a winter in the Northwest Territories and lived in Fort McMurray, AB and Winnipeg to I completely respect your approach to the cold!
Ahh love you guys this was such a fun video, it’s amazing how you guys can traverse across such frigid temperatures. Be safe out there❤️
Thank you.
I'd still sprinkle a lil camping toilet chemicals in the cassette . As a truck driver senior lady, I keep a paint bucket lined with kitchen can bags and the chemicals really help with odor at least on amthe daily
We use the orange stuff from Walmart.
In this case we didn’t pour it in until the evening.
Thanks for watching.
Glad it's getting "warm". Crazy cold temperatures are a pain to deal with. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Definitely warming up!
Your videos are relaxing because you're laid back people. I hope you show some of the big mountain passes. Take care! Welcome back to the lower 48!
Thank you very much. Unfortunately the it was challenging capturing cinematic content on this trip. It was bitterly cold and we were not supposed to have fun.
Stay tuned for the Eastern Sierra videos, they are beautiful.
Awesome! I really enjoyed your video.
I like your videos. A few years ago I worked for a truck and trailer rental company out of Montreal and we use to rent Fuso trucks . Eventually the rental company stop renting Fuso because of all the problems they had with them. Especially the DEF would always produce a check engine. The rental company changed to Hino trucks . I'm glad you enjoy yours
Thanks. We very intentionally bought a 2007 for that reason.
In the early DEF ULSD years all Diesel engines experienced issues. They are getting better though.
First time watcher.
You look and sound like a healthier sized Tom Hanks.
Welcome and glad you enjoyed the video.
Really pretty scenery. I love to travel. Can't now my health is an issue. So I have you two to take me along. Ty for sharing your journey with me. Stay safe
Thanks. I hope you find good health in the future.
Be well.
Found your channel through Roaming Radfords. Really enjoying your vlogs. Thank you.

Thanks for watching.
Now that I think of it, all restaurants of 2021 should have some sort of a drive-thru!!🥪🥙🥤☕ Don't worry, someone loves your kettle!🤗
Unfortunately most drive throughs have height restrictions.
Love the content. Love it! Stay safe and happy!
Thanks!!!!
Glad you’re enjoying our videos.

Found you and subbed and binge watching. I like it!
Hello and welcome.
Glad you’re enjoying our videos!
You two...such a solid attitudinal settling in to the miles together that you are sharing....I get it.... Ive done long mileage journeys.... at time multiples on same route.....in winter... keep on trucking
Thanks. We’ve been traveling for 5 years so we’ve seen the best and worst of each other and everything. Lol.
Glad you liked the video.
If you're going to be spending a lot of time in sub-zero climates the rig's water system has to be prepped correctly. The water tanks need to have 12v heat pads applied to them and covered with as much insulation as you can fit. The pipes should be wrapped in 12v heat tape & then covered in insulation. You can turn your pipe & tank heaters on as needed and a lot of them come with thermal sensors that allow them to turn on & off automatically within a set temperature range. When I go winter hunting I'll pour some antifreeze into the black & gray tanks for extra measure.
I can’t disagree the grey tank is a weak link on our camper, but camping in these temps is no fun so we just muscle through them to warmer climates.
We can survive these temps, but definitely don’t thrive.
@@outliersoverland Roger that. I saw you guys were headed toward the lower 48. I just mentioned it for the viewers who are told that you can't take an RV with plumbing to freezing climates. It can be done by prepping the RV properly but it'll also cost you in battery & fuel consumption. I guess the smart thing is to avoid going to places with extreme temps, whether it's hot or cold unless your rig is equipped for it.
Love it. You guys are great.
Thanks!
This is my favorite channel. 😊
Thanks Tommy.
Looks like Oregon is treating you well.
You guys are awesome, I would love to do what you are doing so lucky, cheers!
I've driven 5 legs Northern Michigan to Anchorage..F250 diesel/truck camper....solo...loved every mile
I LOVE the teapot 😁
I love warm weather. :-) Stay safe and safe travels.
Yes. Warm weather is nice (as we sit in the Arizona warmth).
Thanks!
Be well.
The roof fan thawing, add a large size garbage bag, so the accumulated water goes in the bag yet holds the water in and not dripping out.
Glad you made it to the lower 48
Thanks. So are we!
Great video
Thank you
You’re very welcome.
I can imagine how relieved you are arriving to Prince George and having temperatures 20 above zero instead of 20 below zero . That extreme temperature puts a lot of pressure on the driver and the vehicle and that is why you tried to make it through as soon as you could . But the good thing is that now you can take it easier since you have reached a more friendly temperature zone .
Thanks. Yes it’s much nice when it’s not bitterly cold.
We drove hard through the worst of it and once it warmed up drove more reasonable distances.
Loving it 🙌🏼
Thanks. Glad you’re liking the videos.
We got a roll of reflectex (shiny coated bubble foam) and cut pieces for our skylight, vents and windows in our camper. Really noticed a difference in comfort and less condensation. Also keeps the heat out in summer. Always keep the roof vents and a window cracked as well. Comfortable to about -30c.
We had reflectix covering the roof vent and always keep a window cracked.
It was just that cold.
Thanks for watching.
I would love to go with you guys one day! This is something I want to do once my kids are grown up, but I'd love to try it before committing to this lifestyle! You guys are very informative! Love from Ottawa ontario
Great Vid Guys be careful be safe. Staten Island New York.
Hello from Arizona.
Thanks!
Hey guys! I love your adventures and am glad to support local Alaskans! I hope to get into the Van Life soon. Maybe we”lll see each other on the road!
Thanks. You’ll love traveling.
The FUSO are very reliable trucks, thats a nicely done rig for sure.
Great video 📹. Looks so cold 🥶.
Your truck looks cozy and homey. Wish we also have that kind of weather here in the Philippines.
Thank you. When in the north country, tropical weather is appealing.
Lol.
Hi Guys you maybe living in a 13ft box but your living in a winter wonderland it dont matter if you live in a big house or a 13ft box its what you make of it that counts beautiful scenery good luck and stay safe
Thanks!
We much more enjoy living outside of a 13’ box in a warm climate though.
Be well.
Love your videos. I would like to do this some day. Subscribed!
Thank you and welcome.
I don't know about that cassette toilet business, a composting toilet seems easier
We are interesting in switching to a composting toilet.
If you plumb them to your grey tank they are very low maintenance.
We have gotten used to the cassette though.
Thanks for watching.
Sandra Westley we have the tanks in theUK I wouldn’t even consider a composting one, much easier the tanks and you can purchase bio degradable liquid there are no smells whatsoever and no harmful chemicals to damage the environment.
When a diesel is running at idle it doesn't heat up very well. When I retired in 1987 I ran my Snap on Tool business I never shut down the heater all winter we are from Minneapolis Mn so it's just like Alaska. At one time I had an ISUZU truck like yours and it was real reliable.
Very true. Our engine is very cold blooded. We have to climb a grade to even get the thermostat to open.
My family is from Minnesota.
Hey guys another awesome video. I was watching some of your earlier videos where you were driving a great big RV but you also had 2- 4 legged travel Buddies. May I ask where are they?
Y'all went through some brutal country I've never been in an area where it's-30 cool video guys
Thanks. We are glad you enjoyed the experience.
Nice video, I think they make foam inserts for the vents that pop right in to the opening to help with the cold.
Thanks. I’ve seen those but always hesitated for this camper because space is so critical and we generally don’t enjoy camping in these temps too much.
Thanks for watching.
Thank's guy's just what I needed to see on a Thursday night. You may feel like you have escaped the cold when you got to Prince George. Living in Georgia that's is still freezing cold!! LOL
You’re welcome.
It’s amazing how big of a difference there is in -20 to +30.
Be well over there in Georgia.
WOW, that was a fast reply. Where are you right now?
We try to be around when the videos publish to talk with you guys.
We are in Arizona right now,
I just finished editing the Eastern Sierra videos and now we are getting ready to another adventure.
@@outliersoverland Great. Can't wait for the next video. Bye
you can buy a heater wire to keep those hoes and lines working in super sub temps. u can even hook them ups to a temp pitch for its automatic and and add an indicator light to see when that system is working
Also just wanted to say I hitchhiked That very road back in the late 60'S . 3 times loved it up there but was too expensive to live for me back then. I also spent 2 years in Quesnel BC dredging for gold. It sure has changed now.
I am also not a fan of cassette. Love the truck. I wish I was confident driving in the frozen roads and snow. Due to damage to my right eye . I try not to drive on city streets. Theres no problem. I love watching the winter trips on the road. Enjoy your travels.
We are torn between getting a new cassette or switching to a composting.
Dry frozen roads actually have pretty good grip.
The worst is 32° and raining on an icy road. That’s when studded tires are necessary.
Just 8 more hours to go! Drive safe.
Making good progress.
Well done you two!! Making great progress. How long will you go between seeing another vehicle out there?
Thanks.
In the most desolate stretches we’ll go 30-60 minutes between vehicles.
thank you for share beauty detail video
You’re welcome. Glad you liked it.
Love your massive truck
Thanks. It’s big, but not too big.
Great video guys.
Can you run the diesel heater in the camper while you're driving?
Thinking of installing one, just cant make up my mind on where to cut the hole in the floor. Stay safe, well and positive.
Thanks. I think you could, but it’s not necessary.
Our hydronic heater is on a loop with the engine so we turn it off when driving and the heat generated by the engine heats the camper while we are driving.
Do you have an air fryer? We have a Ninja Foodie XL in our motorhome, makes meals so much easier.
We made the trip from Washington to Anchorage in January 2009. That was crazy. Maybe I missed it, but how were you able to cross the borders?
It was the first video in the series.
czcams.com/video/X_ylHyITCmY/video.html
We are Alaskans and Canada kindly grants us passage for work.
Cool vid! Heads up! You should never empty a cassette toilet into a pit toilet. Pit toilets are dry toilets Cassette toilets are wet toilets.
Wet toilets create sewage and dry toilets create compost.
My fantastic fan has a vinyl quilted snap on cover to help insulate it. Came with the motorhome so don't know where you get them.
We have a reflectix cover , but it was that cold on this trip.
Don't think I could ever get used to the cold again skin grafts from being burned when I was young the older I get the more temperature they feel. I hope the rest of the way goes easyer
I can’t argue there is a point where it’s too cold.
Ben: here in Indiana every once in awhile we get the neg. teens and or 20 temps. I use to drive diesel trucks, and even with block heaters and winter blend fuel our trucks would freeze up. (the wreckers that came to recover us mixed gas in with their diesel) Our problem was resolved by fuel tank heaters. Hoses from the engine to warm the fuel. Does your truck have any thing like that? Have you ever had a problem with your fuel gelling.
John,
Thankfully have never had gelling problems in the north country.
We do not have anything to heat the fuel or keep the batteries warm.
Thanks for watching.
What is size of tires and the rated speed of tires. Also, can u cruise at 65 MPH on flat highways.? Or what is your normal cruising speed?
I love the form factor of the compact Fuso trucks, but I'm worried about them pulling out of the North American market. They say they'll support it for another 10 years, but I can't see how it will be easy to get parts.
Interesting to see how the ol' honey pot is emptied. It doesn't seem like a big deal. Not bad! I don't know how a composting toiled works, but I can't imagine why anyone would choose a composting toilet over that cassette toilet.
I've heard the gas version of that truck is all around less expensive to buy, maintain, and operate. I've heard the FUSO is being discontinued.
Yuuw, I was drinking my pepsi and there is the pooper xDD
**it happens.
Thanks for watching.
Did you guy's leave Becca's MOM at your place in Seward, or did she go south earlier and i missed it? Places like Lordco ,Wallmart ,Where they sell RV stuff, all have a 2 inch thick plug for the max fan openings about $20. canadian. CHEERS Steve h.
She actually left Alaska in August.
Thanks for asking.
We have actually been visiting her in Arizona right now.
I’ve seen those but for the short periods of time when we are in below zero temps we never felt it was worth the space it would occupy 99.9% of the nights we wouldn’t use it.
Fortunately, it doesn’t happen in temps above 20°.
Vous etes formidable.
Je vous aime bien.morroco
Question, would you have done these trips in the old class A?
If the roads were dry and the plumbing was winterized it might be possible but it would be cold.
That class A had so many air leaks and would burn through propane every other day just to keep if from completely freezing.
But, no we would not have tried it. This is one of the main reasons we got this truck, so we could come and go year around.
Unless your aircon system has a reverse valve like a domestic split, your heating in the truck will be coming from the engine via piping going to a heat exchanger in the dash. So the aircon should not be running during heating cycle because the two will be fighting against each other.
Would a small dehumidifier help with the melting snow/ice?
I don’t think it would help when things are thawing, but when parked it would help prevent it.
The diesel stove is our dehumidifier, the combustion air is drawn from the inside of the camper and goes out the exhaust.
It’s a cool system.
I’m so glad you are explaining the Canadian side of your drive. You’ve said before how one time you would show more of Canada, but unfortunately it’s not the time for it now. BTW I’m using a small clear 3M with a metal hook I’ve attached to my dash to hold my mask. That way it’s out of the way and stays clean. Just an idea.
There’s always something making us drive quickly through western Canada.
If u r re using your mask it's not clean anyway.
@@aldinapiscatelli8989 I only use my mask for one day, unless it gets wet, then I will use a second one. I hang it off the dash to hold it there until I get to where I’m going to use it. I recognize fully it’s not sterile. Nor is any procedure mask.
How long is this vehicle? What are the dimensions of the inside living space? Thnx!
Front bumper to spare tire =
Bonavita makes a temperature selectable version of your kettle...
We love the low wattage hot water boilers.
In the lower 48 even when a gas station is closed , 95 percent of the time you can still purchase gas with a credit card. The best way to tell if the pump is on, the light say how many gallons and total amount of money pumped. I use a cassette toilet and like it way better than any composting toilet. Put just a cup of rv antifreeze in your black tank it you have a issue with freezing solid.
We were at the station pumping fuel at 11pm and the pumps turned off.
Interesting, we really want to test drive a composting before switching.
Thanks for watching.
@@outliersoverland Thanks for the reply. You guys have a cool 4x4 box. I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC, and I'm in the process of finally building myself a new x Penski box truck to pull my 28' enclosed race car trailer around the country. I am looking to starting hitting up big street and track no prep drag racing events again after a yr break. I plan on making it out there to Alaska with my rig to do sight seeing on my motorcycle and to do some drag racing. I am sure you probably know, we have a big schoolie, van, tiny home convention every yr. People from all over come in to show off their stuff and get work and companies come in and sell stuff for the builds. You should bring yours and show it. I am a new subscriber of yours. There is a Facebook page for it and you can Google schoolie tiny convention Asheville, NC. Safe travel!
You’re welcome. We try and respond when life allows.
Thanks we love our truck.
Sounds like you are working on a great build.
Candian Walmart is hell!
I hate to take sides in a major controversy but in our 12foot living space we use a collapsible kettle. And I get tea on the road as our van’s driving space is integrated.
Interesting. Is it an electric collapsible kettle?
If we have to use our stove it takes too long.
Other than the toilet dump...loved the video
Greetings.
Thanks for watching.
We try to share the real and authentic side of traveling in a vehicle. Sometimes there are dirty jobs.
Have a good evening.
I have a cassette toilet on my camper van. It's actually good to see how others empty theirs. I never slide off the sliding thing for emptying. I'll try it next time.
It’s not good if it falls into the toilet....
Just curious if you know what branch of the military were those folks in? Did they say?
thanks
It was an Army family.
I'm a little lost at 16:35 are you talking about getting off 97 for a bit and then jumping back on 97 to save time?
We cut a corner between Fort St John and Chetwind, it bypassed Dawson Creek.
Nice rig,,except the mpg Ouch
,I drove cross country few times too chasing work
Had Chevy truck w homebuilt camper,
Great in summer but winters I stayed in motels
Thanks.
Once the temperatures got into the 20’s the mpg returned.
You should idle your engine specifically in cold weather above 1000rpm the main reason is for the oil pressure I don't see any tarp in front ya ya I know what your answer gonna be but the truck is nice and warm sorry it's deeper than that it's about hot and cold fluids anyway take care be safe
Great information.
I’ll be sure to run it up to 1000 next time.
We have thought about putting something in front of the grill but there is so much exposure elsewhere I wasn’t sure how effective it would be.
Plus we are only driving through it for a few days.
Thanks for watching.
I've never seen anyone show 9:45 on #vanlife on Instagram or CZcams. It's the part nobody talks about.
Are you not worried charging the batteries off of the alternator will cause it to prematurely fail?
Not too worried because it’s not a constant charge going to them. We manually flip a switch.
Our last motorhome charged the batteries every time we drove.
....so I’m not too sure....
Fortunately we tend to travel in areas where the solar panels keep things charged.
Thanks for watching.
How does the heater work that it matters for starting the engine? The AC compressor is a significant load on the serpentine belt in most vehicles, but the heater is just an electric blower that pushes air past the warm parts of the engine, it's free heat if you're driving because the car dumps out a ton of waste heat anyways.
There came a point around the turn of the century when some auto makers made the compressor turn on when the heater is in use.
They did this because there are parts of the world where AC is never or rarely used so the compressor would fail prematurely because of lack of use.
@@outliersoverland Ah, I've had cars that have the compressor on for defrost (to dehumidify the air before it's heated) but never noticed it turning on for regular heat. Makes sense, and totally reasonable to avoid. Thank you for explaining it.
@@opcn18 I may have said heat but it was actually the defroster that I had running.
Good morning, I ask you from Argentina, what is the fuel consumption of the truck and at what average speed are they traveling? Thanks a lot
Hello from Arizona (at the moment).
If we cruise around 62 mph on the interstate, the truck gets 11 mpg.
If we are driving slow 35-50 mph on back roads we get up to 14 mph.
@@outliersoverland thanks
To make good time, you have to get going in the morning. The less driving at night.
Thanks for the cassette tutorial. In the extreme cold is an antifreeze needed? Just thinking.... fudgesicle??
You’re welcome. It was a bit slushy, but our camper is heated while driving so it didn’t freeze solid.
Head South ... yikes
Horrible weather...💯🤯🤯🎭😱
lots of the pumps are open 24 hours by pay at the pump
They shut those down too.

It was definitely a learning experience.
Hint take a hair dryer to speed up the thawing on the vent.
It only dripped for about an hour.
We managed.
