- Derrick is a survivor. After losing millions of dollars in the Great Recession of 2008, Derrick's life then snowballed to living in a tent homeless in Oakland, California.
Over time, other homeless people started camping around Derrick, and a small homeless encampment grew into a tent city. I featured the tent community here: • Oakland Tent City Home...

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Here, in Eastern Eu u can work 60 hours a week and still be poorer then homeless American
It's called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.
😂😂😂😂 imagine working close to 60 and still being in the same situation
Even if they raise minimum wage it still isn't enough to pay for lot rent in a trailer park. These landlords need to be put on a leash!
It's happening all over. There's a homeless area on the outskirts of Bozeman, MT that's just beautiful (green grass, mountains rising up in the near distance) where there is one or two long streets with campers lined up. Apparently almost everyone living in the campers, trailers, etc. work and some are even small business owners. So outrageous. The wealthy arrived in droves and home prices and rental costs went through the roof. Societal collapse all around us, aided and abetted by local, state, and federal governments.
This guy lost everything and still is going and is helping other people! This guy is a legend and I hope he gets his life back. He’s a good soul.

We could not sell, there were thousands and thousands of homes belonging to the banks. Well, we are here in 2022 and are safe. Watching these videos, it is so fascinating to know that it is a simple lifestyle with freedom. I am older and I only travelled on the cruise ship, I admired these people they are so brave. At home, I lock my doors, live in a guard gated community and have security cameras and a huge guard dog. I want to experience this one time very soon. We know where to go for a month on the road in the summer. Nice meeting you David. I did not lose money in 1987, I almost did. But 2008 was my biggest loss, we made a lot of money when I moved to Nevada, but we lost it all because we did the 1031 exchange, our portfolio looked so good, until the market collapsed. We cried. We could not sell when nobody was able to get financing. As of right now, the prices are still low compared to what we had to pay in 2008.
@@BriteImpressions1 thank you for that explanation. Good to read and an educator for me.
@@dd007x nice to meet you David. Happy Holidays to you and your family. This story touched my heart ❤️. We were on top of the world and one day we felt like we were at the bottom at the Ocean. We have a lot to be thankful for. Hang in there!

@@user-lo2zw8pw2y He never told us how exactly he made his millions, did he ? My guess is through banking and speculating with other people's money. Not by hard graft. That's why he lost everything in the crash. Unless someone knows otherwise. This guy was leveraged to the max. He should not be confused with the ordinary person born into poverty and left in the shadows. That is not to dismiss this guys hard luck story or his family crisis, but some perspective on his crisis is required. It ain't here.
I lost everything too my friend…stay strong and know there is hope. We are learning what needs to change so we can be that change in the world 💕

You can tell by the tone of this man’s voice he’s educated and very sincere. Dang it, for some reason his story stings me more than the usual homeless story.
This guy sounds very complicit about being homeless.
@@debbiehunt5940 You are afraid. I know people like you who lecture others about being "prepared" and they are the most fearful people I know. The moral of this story is homelessness can affect anyone. Even the professionals can't predict downturns reliably.
I hope he becomes mayor. He seems like a great man to run the city.
You really do need someone whose had everything and nothing to have a good vision that helps all people.
I would vote for him
I was homeless after working in the steel industry for 20 years.. same company until it shut down. I didn't make this much but it was respectable. At the top of 08' I had a house, cars, savings, 401k, stocks, and fiancé.
Now,,, I work full time at Amazon and am renting a very expensive motel room, no car, a couple hundred saved for a studio at some point, my clothes and some miscellaneous items that All fit in 2 suitcases,,, single.
At least I can be thankful to sleep in a bed with heat tonight and have the possibility of everything getting better gradually. America is a struggle for people who are poor, it just seems so much harder these days.
Oakland should do themselves a favor and put this guy on the City Council...
For real!
This guy should do himself a favor and go to the Oakland salvation army and get his life back together.
Because he's homeless?

You can hear by the sigh in his voice it hits his heart every time he tells the story but he still holds his dignity I’m proud of you
For someone who had lost everything he seems very calm and collected, respect and good luck man.
Calm and collected yes. But you can still see the pain in his eyes, you can hear the confusion in his boys. He had the rug pulled from underhim
cos he is stoned
well this was like 12 years ago so theres that
i'm sure it gets exhausting to constantly be in fear mode. he made a community and set up a structure like the military.
His surviving itself looks miracle to me. I can't believe he overcame all the harsh happenings to his life. So sad...
What an incredible man, the amount of knowledge and advocation for his city is incredible. I just heard about him being "accidentally" left off the ballot. INSANE.
DO NOT FORGET...WE COULD ALL BE ONE PAYCHECK FROM BEING ON THE STREETS...when you look at someone...SEE THAT PERSON...
It may be true that we are all one check away from being on the streets but the reason why we are not is that we continue to get back to the grind ever morning. we work hard and don't stop. if you have that drive you will survive. If you go back to some old post from this guy in 2016, he said he could get out if he wanted but he was going to help this group be better. You can do anything you set your mind to it.

@Lana Rhoads Are you including yourself?. Do you consider yourself as a generally good person? Most people have flaws, most people have lied. I've heard these kind of stories all through time from homeless people. I'm a lawyer, I was a banker, I was a president of the company.
On days when I feel sorry for myself, I'll come back to this video for an attitude reset. Derrick is a shining example of what gratitude and a positive outlook on life look like.
None of us will have a Brink's truck follow us to the grave yard! LOL
Dave Chappelle sure you can learn from his mistakes in that regard but I think she means just all that he went through.
