Elderly Homeless Man Living in a Tent as a Retirement Plan

- Dirk lives in a tent homeless in Venice Beach, California. This is his first time being homeless. Dirk is 64 years-old. He lived and worked as an independent contractor in Montana for 14 years. In his own words, Dirk says he is tired. It's time to retire. As most American's do, Dirk has been paying into Social Security all of his life. He figured Social Security would provide his retirement funds. When Dirk filed at 62, they told him he didn't have enough credits. Dirk has now filed again at 64. he says that he is wondering if they will ever pay him after 40 years of working and paying into Social Security.
At the beginning of this interview, Dirk shares about how lucky he is to be living in a tent one block from the beach. Truth is, Dirk is disabled. Dirk told me after this interview, he is losing his sight and is partially blind. He can no longer work. Montana winters are cold. Dirk was looking for a warmer climate. Dirk didn't plan on ending up homeless on a sidewalk in Venice Beach. He was passing through, and the coronavirus hit. The pandemic made travel almost impossible, so Dirk is making the best of it.
Dirk says he has a case manager helping him get into housing and file for Social Security. At the time of this interview, Los Angeles police allowed homeless people to keep their tents up all day. CDC guidelines changed how police dealt with homeless encampments.
Elderly homelessness was a growing crisis even before the pandemic. Boomers are reaching 65 years-old at 10,000 people a day. Like me, many lost everything in the 08 crash. They don't have retirement funds. Now with the pandemic, all demographics of homelessness will skyrocket.
Dirk's point of US vs THEM may be true. He's right that there is plenty of money in this great country of ours. We the good people need to do something about them the bad people Dirk says. If we all just learned to love each other.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I remember as a kid that I wanted invisibility as a superpower over any other super power.
I guess I got what I wanted. Homeless now in El Paso TX.
@Heart Hexed The world doesn't work that way lady. Always blaming others for your problems, you seem like a child. The man in the video obviously wanted to be homeless. He almost tries to glorify it, by talking about being around amazing scenery. Many people chose to be homeless from lack of discipline. You're not the only, "homeless survivor" (lmao). It took me a long time to grow up and get my shit together. Your bohemian ideals are the same reason why so many people are homeless to begin with. No one is gonna help you, no can can help you besides yourself. I'm glad someone gave you a golden ticket out -let's hope you don't end up there again.

What an articulate guy. I hope he gets his retirement social security. His beach solution makes a lot of sense.
876vanred I have no idea how retirement works in the US, but that sounds complicated.
@@876vanred he said the Social Security agent told him he didn’t qualify to draw it. He claims that he’s been self employed all his life. A lot of people who are self employed don’t claim all their earnings to escape paying more taxes. Young people don’t think about being old, but you find yourself in trouble because they go by how much you made in 35 yrs time. Example...if you work only 30 yrs, the 5 yrs is tallied as 0 each yr. deducted and figured into your monthly payments.
Yes, he is very good at articulating his ideas and I also agreed with him that they should be able to stay in the beach instead of the concrete which was hard. In addition, it would be better that they could at least stay in the beach with some diginity and privacy.
@@876vanred Maybe his case manager will figure that out for him. I really hope he gets what he deserves from his hardwork.
@@876vanred Yes, agreed with you. The sooner he could get off the street, the better. For the other point, I don't know how to put it in a better way. If there is a chance in life, we might all take a chance to experience how a homeless person's life could be in a day or a week and what kind of struggle there could be. Sitting on the sidewalk and observing how some people could treat us or look at us. Then we might have a better understanding of what they might need and how they really feel. Losing one's house might not mean that one should lose everything as a human. It's just my bias. Thank you very much for your comments.
This man has amazing morals and responsibility. He makes sense. Seems like a decent human being....
I'm homeless, but there's so much more to me than just "I'm homeless" I'm a human being. So are we all...

Interesting video - shows how complicated homelessness can be. When I was pretty young in the 70s you still saw the odd ‘tramp’ (UK term). It was a different thing to modern homelessness - they were a certain sort of self-contained character. When we asked about them back then our parents used to say that that had been a lot more in the immediate post-war years - many had returned from the war and they just couldn’t live inside anymore. They just had to keep wandering and thinking. They never asked for anything - apart from occasionally knocking on your door to beg some tea, milk and a sandwich - then they’d be off again. Dirk’s attitude and mannerisms sort of puts me in mind of them…
These days we're so surrounded by "stuff" that we think we "need" which in reality, we don't need half of it.
The system has failed this poor man. I hope and pray he gets all that is owed to him and then some.
The man clearly has addiction issues. Also, if he's been working hard all his adult life, where are his savings and where are his wife and children? Where are his brothers and sisters? Where are his cousins? Where is the property he should have paid off by now? No one owes him a thing. The system doesn't owe him a thing. He made his choices, free and clear.

Mean while their friends and families can obviously see that there is a problem.

It is laughable- just the cognitive dissonance people have to believe so they can't realize it can happen to anyone.- normal people who worked. If COVID lockdowns prevent Americans from working, it won't be long until 20, 30% of the population is in his situation.
This man is just amazing! One of the most intelligent people I've had the privilege to listen to.
This man is beautiful and he understands. I'd love to hang out with him. I'm sure he super interesting.
This is a good example of wisdom and experience. Hes being too modest saying he's not smart enough because he gave away whatever money he had to people he wanted to help. That's the opposite of stupid, it's true selflessness. Feels like a really good person in a tough spot.
Although I am financially stable because I've chosen to live modestly - I would have a LOT more money if I hadn't given so much of it away through the years. Fortunately, I have made good financial choices, remained debt free, and live below my means by choice, so the money I have given away will not change the outcome of my future.
I live in Austin. Texas where we have a large homeless population. I just found your channel. Thank you for helping us understand homelessness better. I used to know a Mark Horvath at Chennago Valley High School in Binghamton, NY and I'm proud of the good things coming from my hometown. You're doing important and good work. Thanks again.
for a man that is partially blind he sees more than so many people don't ,the lord is with this man
The faces of the homeless are so sincere and kind.
Not everyone
He is content in his love for Jesus Christ, that's what he's saying, feeding on God's word.
Had he paid his self-employment tax when he was an independent contractor he would already qualify for social security. I don't remember if you grew up in Appalachia like me or just lived there, but for about $400 a month one can split a mobile home with utilities. That's two days a week at a minimum wage job which is enough to earn credits toward social security. Not only would he receive more money at 67 (full retirement), but also qualify for SNAP (food stamps), HEAP (heat subsidy), PIPP (electric subsidy), etc. immediately. I also know several people in subsidized housing there which once he got in would reduce his housing costs to 30% of his income. The solution for so many in your videos is relocation and education on how to leverage existing programs.
Bruce Clark you are absolutely right. I think it’s absolutely bullshit that a lot of the most beautiful places in America are just becoming for the elite only... such as the west coast. Just 50yrs ago a regular working person could afford to live there and live relatively close to the ocean. The fuck is going on in USA its really going to shit
Am I the only one that sees a problem with working for 40 Years and not saving any money at all and then hoping the government gives you a great comfortable retirement when it’s all over ?!?
Paychecks to paychecks and rents keep increasing 😡 Too many greedy politicians 😡 God bless everyone 🙏
OMG.... I am his age.... I also cannot work due to a disability! But WOW.... I am soooo damn thankful I live in Western Australia.
I saw this I’m disabled too in south Australia- it’s shocking he can’t get ssi , eh
Wondering how you manage to get any support from the government in Australia
@@nowirehangers2815 ? Same as there I reckon?

That is exactly the point. Good for him to put it like this.
Yes
I had a cat, that was left by a friend who went abroad. It was about 9, had lived homeless all its life, and would not, come near me to help it. I fed it well, but could not change its mind. In a damp part of a pleasantly warm summer, it died from too much mucus in its lungs. How I could have changed its mind, is a question that does bother me. People who live outside, also die early from too much mucus in the lungs, as the body seems to be in a constant battle to stop a pneumonia like situation, and dampness and lack of warmth seem to allow something to reduce the life span. I think some permanent damage is also done, so that just going on a holiday somewhere better does not reset the physical condition completely.
But the real problem is changing the mind. Everybody likes a gift, well wrapped up, and given in a pleasant way, even if the gift is as unwanted as usually the wrapping is. The key thing is the joy of being worth considering, in a truly genuine intention.
In Jesus this can happen for strangers, and I praise God for that.
But it still does not happen enough.
In John 21:11 there is 153 fish mentioned, and early Christians were fishers of Men and Women and Children using the symbol of a fish.
I testify as a person who knows more Mathematics than an average person, that the number 153 is quite odd Mathematically, and so gives value to the Gospel, and shows a God who knows more Mathematics than the average person.
John 6:29 "The work of God is to believe in him whom he sent" and my interest in the quiet miracles of numbers helps me do this work.
But the non believers and the Church denominations are anti the numbers, because they are afraid of the numbers causing Theo argument.
I value God, and believe that God is right, and that I am wrong, though I am not understanding how.
So I still say let us Praise God...
We all have different situations. I'm 88 years old and retired at 68 after working for 44 years and paid into SS for only 23 years. I draw a pension for the other 21 years of work. I never made more than 50K a year. Through good planning, I manage to own my own home and completely debt free at the time of my retirement, 20 years ago. My retirement income is 45K and my non discretionary expenses is 35K. Life is good, if you plan for it and have some discipline.
Good for you! I’m assuming you are healthy for your age too? Enjoy your retirement
@@vickiladu6755 I neglected my health until age 58 when I had a heart attack. Since then, I looked after my health. A lesson to all: eat healthy and be active throughout your life.
we need decent shelters for peoples like him.
smokers and peoples with mental problems have to go separate, but elders have to come first and those with no income should benefit from charity...when u make a video like this u should find a way to show the public how to reach to that person: some peoples could send him some money via western union...some peoples dont trust intermediaries...And me personal, I dont like to see peoples begging on the street and I dont trust them...watching this kind of living, I think they could live better in prison...the society provides better conditions for criminals than for this unfortunate neighbors...Shelters for them should be better than prisons...we should have based on income shelters and charity shelters for those without any income...
We need public policy to catch up with the tiny house movement. There are many organizations ready to jump on dignified tiny house villages for the homeless, but most places and cities don't allow them.
I totally agree with you
Worked 40 years and now 64 living in a tent. Obviously made some terrible financial decisions but he seems to be in good spirits.
It homelessness was a punishment for bad decisions, we’d all be homeless. There are 30 million households at risk of being evicted right now. Elderly homelessness is growing because most Boomers like me lost everything in the O8 crash and now cannot afford rent.
@@ESOInTeNsE I understand. A lot of boomers worked labor jobs for several decades and saved the old fashioned way. Having "side hustles" and multiple streams of income like many millennials (including myself) is very very normal now. It is nothing special even though it feels like this extraordinary hard work sometimes. As millennials we know if the rug is pulled out from under us.. we should have saw it coming anyway and hopefully we will have the savings and work left to keep us housed.
Not just terrible financial decisions, but terrible people decisions also. Where is his family? Where are his friends? Have they all given up on him? Security - at the end of the day - is less about money and more about stable and reliable relationships with stable and reliable people. The poorest societies on earth don't allow homelessness. They will squeeze in every last family member. Of course for that to work, everyone must be decent, clean living, hard working, and responsible. They are able to support each other because everyone is doing the right thing.
@@InvisiblePeople fyi you only lose if you sell. Tons of people become wealthy in bad markets because instead of selling at a loss you purchase more.
@@SomaraSon agree with your comments, but just because we HAVE to have multiple streams of income, doesn't mean it's right. The US is notorious for not having any work life balance and normalizing the exploitation of its workers.
He gets his Social Security I pray that he does seems like a nice normal guy that just wants a normal life like anyone else God bless
