Kelly is homeless yet you'd never know it unless she told you.

  • Kelly approached me at a forum about fighting the increase in the criminalization of homelessness this week. She walked up and asked, "are you Mark of Invisible People?" Kelly then asked if I can help her tell her story. I didn't think she was currently homeless so I responded that Invisible People empowers people still in some state of homelessness to share their stories. Kelly then enlightened me that not only is she still homeless she is sleeping outside in an alley.
Since May of 2016, Kelly has slept in this alley in Washington D.C. She goes through a dumpster each night to find cardboard to sleep on. Kelly shares candidly about how homeless women need to wear a skirt at night to urinate, however, doing so increases the risk of being sexually assaulted.
Kelly has two master degrees; she is intelligent and articulate. She says her homelessness is a result of her search for justice after ongoing legal battles. She came to D.C. to continue her fight for justice but ended up in a women's shelter. When that shelter was closed last year, she had no place to go but the streets.
I have to give huge props to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NLCHP) for including Kelly and several other people currently in some state of homelessness. Even more, people still experiencing homelessness were not just scholarshiped into the event, they were at the table and included in every conversation.
People still homeless are by far the most important voice that service providers and governments need to be listening to. Some homeless conferences just bring in homeless people as a form of tokenism, so it's very refreshing when organizations like the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty and the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness include homeless people in the event and treat them as equals!

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as CZcams, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Why is it so many of you have a hard time believing that a homeless woman is wearing makeup and takes some pride in her appearance? First, I met Kelly at an event hosted by The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. Kelly was scholarshiped into the conference. The event just ended moments before this interview was recorded. Kelly spent the night before in a hotel funded by the National Law Center on Homelessness.
When I was an outreach case manager working with people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, 80% of my clients you would never know they slept outside by looking at them. For many, homelessness is not the end. People are survivors. Even while on the streets people do what they can to take care of their appearance.
Those of you commenting about Kelly wearing makeup need to let go of the wrong perceptions you have about homelessness and homeless people! The image you have of a dirty baglady or some bum with a wine bottle with a cardboard sign is not an accurate representation of homelessness and homeless people. Yes, it's sad when the human spirit gives up, and there are hurting people on the street in horrible conditions - BUT THAT'S ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF HOMELESSNESS!
In any community, the percentage of chronic homeless people runs between 20% to 40%. Around 60% of individuals YOU'D NEVER KNOW THEY WERE LIVING ON THE STREETS UNLESS THEY TOLD YOU! Many have jobs but cannot afford a place to stay. Most wash in fast food bathrooms or 24 hr fitness facilities!
I know this may come as a shock but HOMELESS PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE! REAL PEOPLE!

David Tiareh - fact is makeup to get the job done can be very cheap. They have an abundant selection at the Dollar Tree where everything is actually $1. So for $5, you can have enough for a month. This whole makeup deal isn't where anyone should be concerned.

Invisible People I am one of the many people without a home at this time and taking a serious backlash for being on here. I'm more about informing and encouraging others. My situation doesn't follow the stereotypical homeless person either. The video on my channel provides proof but most won't bother to look at it. God has plans for me and I am fighting back. We won't be homeless for long and I have a great case. I only wanted to share a little but I that wasn't enough. Many people are genuinely caring and curious but my goodness some on here are just evil with their comments to me. No matter I push through it all and give thanks. My kids read these comments and are so grateful that most are kind. We're not giving up or backing down and will always help others to get to a better place in life. Blessings to you all.

Alisha jane Bless you so much. We don't want to be in this situation but it does happen plus it isn't a permanent point in our lives. Many homeless people recover from their ordeal and move into a home again. We're not mindless zombies begging for your entire life savings. We want others to understand that this is happening all over the world especially America. We don't need bashing but encouragement. Kindness goes a long way. Alisha you are so awesome and. Blessings and Love

I got a very bad incurable disease so my husband didn’t want me anymore n I was too sick and on my deathbed to fight my husband legally and he took all our money and everything and I ended up homeless. He hired the best attorney and I cannot do anything. I found an attorney who will help me for a retainer of $3,500 of which I don’t have. So yes..... anybody at any time can end up homeless!!!!

I'm so sorry this is happening. The same thing is happening to me and my kids. My former neighbors are also facing homelessness too. My home was full of mold, asbestos, sewage and I was hospitalized. I was bullied property management and charged $600 for mold on a bathroom vanity. The apartment owner was a famous civil rights advocate and a very influential leader in Atlanta. No one would listen to me. HUD refused to come out to investigate and the news only made my situation worse by adding that I was a burden to tax payers even though I worked as much as possible before my health started to fail. The city of Atlanta had very little interest in my situation because of this man's philanthropic giving. It is so amazing how quickly people are to dismiss your proven claims when you're going up against a person of power. The great thing is that I documented everything with video, photos, hidden voice recorded conversations etc. I have a media background and I'm going to show what citizens go through that are less fortunate. Please check out Atlanta Deadly Government Housing to see my neighbors unit next to my unit. My documentary will be out soon. Blessings to you all. piperpepperpickeda peckofpickledpeppers Hello and thanks for your concern. They're a number of people and businesses that turned a blind eye to this evil. The owner and property management company, The City of Atlanta, HUD, The National Housing and Compliance, The City-County-State Health Departments, State Representatives and
Community Leaders. I have reached out to so many people and organizations that I lost most hope. Then I remembered that God chose me for a reason. Out of everyone that's being bullied by this company, I'm the only one with all the documented proof. I saved everything from the nasty letters that property management sent out to residents, hidden camera conversation, pictures of my unit and other units, I documented each time I spoke to anyone, and have copies of everything in other places. This coverup is bigger than Al Sharpton, Kasim Reed, or Jesse Jackson, and yes, they know the owner too. It is so sad that even attorneys are quickly to to discourage you from fighting them but I must. God is with me and that's why I must fight for everyone that's too afraid or too tired to continue on. It has been hard but I have no fear. Only for legal reasons I don't mention the owner's name at this time. The irony is that I once worked for this company at the location where I lived. I know the dirty deeds and I am exposing the real evil of this company. A sweet person from PBS has been working with me so I can get my documentary out soon. Thanks again for your response.

When I was homeless, me and some other females had about one cosmetic each, and we'd share. I totally understand not wanting to go to a shelter, which can be very manipulative and abusive. Watching the videos has also shown me that you can be highly intelligent, articulate, etc, and still have mental health issues preventing you from living a functional life.
I don't doubt some local Kentucky govt crooks screwed her out of justice, but how did she decide to abandon her job (did she even have one), social network of friends and family, home, all her earthly possessions, etc to live in a homeless shelter in DC for two years while 'pursuing justice'. It doesn't add up at all. She sounds like someone who is intelligent/articulate with paranoid schizophrenia--and if you put her in a home she'd tear down the walls convinced of wiretapping or something.
And when people generically say "I've got two masters degrees, three PhDs, four BAs" etc like a qualifier for intelligence, it's usually a sign they don't actually have said degrees.

    • @user-jz2bm4wz1g
      @user-jz2bm4wz1g Před 3 lety +2

Also, there's no such thing as what she's talking about--an EPA roundtable for the homeless, EPA stands for protecting people from the environment? It's literally the other way around--the EPA is to protect the environment from human pollution. When the EPA discusses homelessness, it's to address the pollution issues it creates--not the wellbeing of human lives. That's for other govt branches, like the dept of housing and urban development...

I would too but I think it’s really hard. I’m a vendor that regularly visits a beauty shop in Beverly Hills. There was a regular customer I would always see who eventually lost her job and would come in for free samples of shampoo, skin care and etc. The store would always give it to her too! After 3 months of being homeless she literally broke as a person, she would walk up and down the street talking to herself, come into the store yelling and didn’t look put together anymore.
I think you have to be amazingly strong like the woman in this video to not have homelessness affect your mental health and the way or the ability to take care of yourself. On a brighter note! I used to volunteer at a women’s shelter that provides personal care products and some beauty products so it is accessible! :)

My mom is sick and when my parents got a divorce she would of been homeless if it wasn’t for my siblings and taking care of her as much as we could. My sister claims her on her taxes and she’s only 26. The state only gives my mom food stamps, she can’t get disability even though she is sick and the doctors have written that she is sick. She’s been to court so many times in the last 5 years yet they refuse to give it to her. ANYONE can be homeless. Your health gets you wealth. If you’re sick and can’t work, unless someone is helping you, you could be on the streets.

Kelly Miller blew the whistle on fraud, corruption, misuse of power in law enforcement and government agencies which resulted in retaliation against her. Ms. Miller took her fight from the eastern Kentucky Coal Mountains to the nation’s capital in Washington DC. where she currently has litigation in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia for the RICO Acts of law enforcement and government agencies.
Despite Ms. Miller’s ongoing personal adversity of homelessness, she continues to give back to society by actively advocating for others. Miller is an advocate for homeless persons as well as basic human rights and devotes her time advocating for the needs of the homeless community and fighting for homelessness and human rights across the nation.

I'm also from KY originally, but raised in NC and I also experienced homelessness for a few years. Fortunately, I never slept on the streets. I never knew where I'd be and furthermore, I had two children (now we have 3). This was all a direct result of a substance use disorder involving prescription opioids which was a result of the trauma I experienced at 17 when my *perfect* life was flipped upside down and my parents died in a tragic accident. No one believed that I was homeless or going through addiction, food insecurities, etc. I was always well kempt, was highly aware of my physical appearance and spoke with intelligence and a broad vocabulary. Thankfully the right people crossed my path at the right time and I am now 32 years old and 6 years into recovery. I work as a Certified Peer Support Specialist/Recovery Coach/Administrative Support Specialist for our county Public Safety/EMS Community Response Support Team. Now I have my own office where I help connect struggling individuals to basic support. I am extremely effective because I have the shared lived experiences and that is a priceless addition to my resume. Life can change dramatically in a very short amount of time and I am proof of that!
