Homeless Man Can’t See. Los Angeles Sweeps Don’t Care

  • Kevin is such a gentle and kind man. He's lived on the streets homeless in Los Angeles for three years. Kevin says he was hurt in a work accident, then life snowballed to where he had no choice but to live outside in a tent.
Kevin has vision problems. It makes me so angry how we treat disabled homeless people. Instead of providing the support they need, homeless sweeps make homelessness worse by displacing people. As a result, Kevin has lost all his possessions several times.
LA Sanitation gives homeless people 15 minutes to move everything. However, because we were there with cameras, they gave Kevin extra time, which is one of many reasons why it's vital to film sweeps and film police.
We were the only ones who took the time to talk to Kevin. To learn his name. To know Kevin's story. To understand that he has trouble seeing, especially when the light is bright. Four case workers stood in the shade across the street, never once attempting to help Kevin. When I asked them about it, they explained that legally they cannot help people move their stuff. If service providers cannot offer help, why are they even there?
Politicians say homeless people are being offered housing and services, but that is a lie. In every anti-sweep video we've posted, service providers verified the best they can offer is to be placed on a waiting list. In this video, an Urban Alchemy manager said, "it's being offered; there's just none available." Housing and services are being offered to homeless people, but there is no housing or services available.
Taxpayers pay over $70 million each year for the Los Angeles Police Department and LA Sanitation to displace homeless people under the guise of street cleaning. We all want clean streets, yet homeless sweeps only make homelessness worse! The only way to keep streets clean is to solve homelessness; however, LA's politicians continue to invest more in pushing homeless people out of sight than helping them. Homeless sweeps do nothing to help people, and they make homelessness worse.
If you live in Los Angeles, here is a link for the City Council contact information broken down by district. Please reach out to your legislators to demand they stop the sweeps. lacity.gov/directory
Nationally, please support Housing Not Handcuffs housingnothandcuffs.org
We all must advocate for more housing and support services and stop homeless sweeps at the local level. At the same time, we must continue to pressure state and federal legislators. Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will worsen.
Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.

Sam, that's not communism. People use communism to describe any time "the government does stuff!" or use it interchangeably with authoritarianism.
Communism, simply put, is a stateless, classless, and moneyless society in which workers own their workplaces democratically and resources are distributed on an as needed basis.
The thing you are describing is the "resources are distributed on an as needed basis," which is only 1/5th of what communism is.
Additionally, do you think you benefit from capitalism?
Capitalism, simply defined, is having few people who own all the workplaces, all the factories, and having workers be subservient to them as they make billions while the workers can barely afford rent.
      Is that a good system?
What if instead, we had workers have control over their workplaces? A workplace democracy if you will? Instead of all that wealth getting funneled to the 1% of people, why not funnel it directly to the workers? And give them choices in how the workplace is ran? This is literally what socialism means (not communism btw, they are different things). Socialism is quite simply, economic democracy, nothing more, nothing less. This is a very mundane middle ground that doesn't even need resources to be distributed on an as needed basis like communism.
Do you wonder why you have been told socialism is bad your entire life? Because those rich and powerful elite pay media to tell you those lies about what these words mean. To keep you in the dark. To keep your suffering and keep their wealth and prosperity.
I seriously wish the best day for you, I hope this was insightful! :)

Any abandoned shopping center could be used as a clinic for them, a clothing drive for them, etc. But, 70 million dollars are instead being used to push them back to where they were originally pushed from, just to push them back out again, only to push them back to the original spot for the umpteenth time.

It’s a form of white supremacy to impose their views on homeless on the Korean communities, when these immigrants literally work 7 days a week to have their only source of livelihood destroyed by homeless

I don't think this man is accepting his situation as much as he has resigned himself to it for lack of choices.
The cleaners are just doing their job and sanitizing the streets, so disease doesn't spread through the neighborhood and kill people, they don't have the power to offer housing. If those cleaners dont do their job then they get fired and end up homeless.
Cleaners are NOT the government, they are probably on a minimum wage and struggle to provide for their families.
The only solution is to build more affordable public housing.

I love this channel and I respect what your doing but I feel like your looking at things the wrong way .... Los Angeles has countless services for the homeless, tons of detox's, free healthcare for the most part, it by far has WAAAY more public resources then many other states .... Trust me I know, I been there, was homeless for 2 years.... I knew there were resources out there but I got comfortable on the streets, I got use to sleeping in a tent, got use to panhandling, wanna know what finally made me get off my ass and get out of homelessness??? I had one night were all my belongs got stolen, I got moved out of my sleeping spot 4 times in one night and then made 2$ panhandling for the ENTIRE following day, I felt so depressed and miserable but you wanna know what... That was the last day I slept on the street. I called detox's that night and got in the next day, got sober, went to a halfway house were they helped me get a job, graduated to a sober house, got a raise at work and got my own place and now I got 2 kids and I'm saving up for a house.... I wish people had stopped enabling my homelessness sooner, maybe if some one ripped down my encampment a year previous I woulda spent one less year on the street... Everyone is different, not everyone is gunna share my story or agree but the services are out there. How many of these homeless people have you asked to go to detox of you'd get them a bed and refused? How many open spots at the shelter are there that homeless ppl refuse to go to? There use to be a van that drove around at night asking us if we needed a ride to the shelter and I would say no I'm good I got my tent and who wants to go to a shelter and follow the rules? Get your bag searched ect.... I was comfortable, and I wish I had been uncomfortable being homeless much sooner.... Not to mention how is it fair to everyone else? Business owners and people just trying to enjoy the community? I got 2 kids, I wouldn't want a homeless encampment in my neighborhood in a area where my kids walk/live.... We as a society should never just accept or allow humans to sleep outside, even if you gotta be mean about it...
Edit: just watched all the way through, you asked him "when they cleared all your stuff out did they offer you any services or housing?" He said no, I believe that's not true but let's say the police didn't say a word and just threw his stuff away... Your trying to tell me he doesn't know where any shelters are? YOU TRY TO DISTORT THE SITUATION you wanna point out there's only 2 spots open, ya dude for HOUSING ...not shelter space, when there overflowed they give you a mat and let you sleep on the floor... THERES A PROCESS BRO, you don't just get handed a free house, no you get off your ass and get over to the shelter by 4 (cuz there will be a line but you'll get in if your even remotely responsible) then you get a CASE WORKER (key aspect bro) wich ALL shelters offer, once you got a case worker you can ALL SORTS of services, got a drug problem they'll get you a bed, you got a disability or mental health they'll get you a counselor, they offer job training programs, paid internships, I even had some service take me out shopping to buy all new clothes and a shirt and tie for an interview ...
And trust me every homeless person who's out there for more then a month knows all these programs exist ... You should to... Like why aren't you trying to get these homeless people services and instead your just documenting ther pain for CZcams clout? How is that I know more about homeless services available then you do and you consider yourself some sort of homeless outreach worker... Or I'm starting to think more so your just a CZcams clout chaser who's capitalizing off a situation and you'll occasionally raise money simply to just enable these people more, like do you truly think your helping an addict by handing them money, who's to say that money wasnt the same money they bought drugs with and overdosed on and now there bloods on your hands, or even forget drugs let's say mental health, do you think it helps a mentally ill person to give them money to make it "easier" to sleep outside or do think it'd be better to tell the person " hey man sorry, I know your going through it trust me I been there but you can't sleep outside, here's all the resources and services that will help you, here's the address to a shelter where you can crash tonight just make sure your there by 3 to get in by 4, and they'll get you a case worker who can help with all sorts of stuff and can help you to try and change your situation"... I think the latter is the way to go ----- coming from a man who slept outside for YEARS....
You think your helping but your not .... Or you know your not helping and don't care cuz it's all for the views, who knows

I have experienced being on the streets not having a place to sleep, money to have life basic necessaries. If it wasn't for my x wife allowing me to sleep on the coach living room. I'll probably be dead. In my personal opinion 3 reasons why in Los Angeles California, there's so many folks unsheltered aka homeless. 1. There's no low cost housing . Even if a person is working if they only earning the minimum wage can't afford to pay for an apartment it takes two above minimum wage incomes. 2. Addictions and mental issues, not enough or limited resources, near by for people to.go that don't have their own transportation or money to uber nearest clinic. 3. Unemployment I gotta include myself on this is very difficult to 9obtain employment without having a place to shower, also work history gaps, not knowing people to network or put down as references, a lot of employers won't hire you if you can't provide this information. Odd minimum wage jobs don't pay enough to survive here in los Angeles California. Politicians fail to see all of the obstacles homeless folks have to get off the streets and be a productive citizen.

There are tons of services downtown, but whether you're homeless, have a family and in a tough spot, or whatever your situation is, you have to find a way and keep moving forward and help yourself. You can't wait for stuff to fall in your lap. Sidewalks are for walking and public safety, not for living on. Everyone homeless loves skid row, drugs and free stuff. Sweeps are useful it smells like urine downtown because homeless urinate everywhere among other things and throw trash everywhere. Public health is important and there are functioning businesses down there that have to deal with rampant homelessness which is ridiculous. Tax payers have already put up a ton on money. Most of these homeless have no motivation to do anything and don't want to truly improve their situation.
