17 Years Military to 10 Years Homeless in Los Angeles

  • I first met Bob last Sunday. I was invited to join West Valley People’s Alliance on outreach in Chatsworth, a suburban neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. I forget how hot the in the San Fernando Valley gets. It was 109 degrees out. Far too hot for anyone to be outside, but tens of thousands of homeless people do what they can to survive.
Bob spent 17 and 1/2 years in the military until he was hurt on the job. It took almost five years of tests before they could validate his medical discharge. Around this time, Bob was going through a divorce, which made navigating the bureaucracy even harder. I have heard similar stories from other homeless veterans.
Bob should be getting approximately $2,700 every month in VA benefits and $2,100 from Social Security. That amount combined would be enough to get Bob and his wife off the streets into an apartment. Instead, Bob receives $143 in total benefits every month. He cannot even get food stamps because they look at what Bob should be receiving, which on a computer is too much to qualify, but in the real world, Bob has to live on $143 every month.
Bob likes to work on cars. Make sure to watch to the end to hear his 3rd wish. Bob makes extra money through his mechanic skills, but because of his disability, he cannot work enough to maintain a normal job.
Bob's wife has been in the hospital for two weeks. During a homeless sweep, police and sanitation were pushing them to hurry up. Bob's wife cut her leg during the sweep, which eventually got infected. Homeless sweeps and the criminalization of homelessness are growing in Los Angeles. Politicians just passed 41.18, which makes it illegal to sit, lie or sleep in or upon any street, sidewalk or other public way. THEY DIDN'T PROVIDE MORE HOUSING OR SHELTER BEDS - they just made it illegal to live outside!

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I lived next door to a lady who was blind. She was on the section-8 list for 12 years. Suddenly they told her a place opened up, and she had 14 days to move in, or she loses it and gets bumped to the bottom of the list. Getting into section-8 would lower her monthly rent from $800 to just under $300. She was telling me she couldn't afford to move. She can't drive, so a rental truck is out of the question; and the moving companies are ridiculous, they wanted over a grand to move her 5 miles. I told her there's no way she can afford $$ to pass this up; so I rented and drove the moving truck for her. She got some more friends to help pack/move her things. We got her checked in, and moved in, just in time.

I was actually had a employer who wanted to hire me after work program! Could not get any VA healthcare so how can you keep housing and a job! Went to the rockies for Obamacare got 4 major and 4 minor surgeries plus housing and being over 55 did a senior work program got hired but back gave out it does take time to go through the mostly worthless Doctors till you find one worth a damn! Had back surgery and finishing up treatment then will do Senior work program you can do 4 years of the federal program but it also has to be done one for each year! Some states have senior work programs also! On vet per diem and work programs the managers do not want you to know you can do more plus be careful of shelters that have them! Adm. offers assistance for continuing education, home loans, free medical, & for some, service related injuries where Vets. are paid monthly for disability compensation. These benefits must be applied for & the wait times can take months to years depending on the type assistance. In many cases, claims are denied with no appeals filed. Social Security alone typically will not sustain applicants & the process can be equally as long. Only Veterans whom have served 20+ years are eligible for pensions. English appears not to be your primary language so I'll try to keep this simple. Money is not paper. Money is invisible; a promise of someone else's LABOR. If I earn ten dollars, I can use that ten dollars to purchase goods and services made by other people.
Now suppose I print my own, or the government prints unlimited supply. I could print myself a million dollars, do it every day! But so can you and everyone else! How much labor do you suppose you could buy using paper money you print yourself? What does the other person GET when you buy something with phony money? Nothing! They don't want it.
If the minimum wage was a million dollars an hour, the price of a Bic Mac meal would simply be a million dollars.
In other words, you TRADE an hour of your labor for an hour of someone else's labor assuming similar investment in skill. A dollar represents that hour. Except of course now the minimum wage represents an hour of unskilled labor. That is what it IS.
Government can print "money" but cannot provide LABOR to match. Therefore, printing too much paper money simply devalues the value of it.

It takes YEARS to get VA benefits. My husband has been through it, and so have many other people we know. When you finally get it, that doesn't mean you get the proper amount. So the cycle begins again. You refile and have to wait YEARS for the proper benefits. In most cases, a lawyer has to be involved. My husband retired from the Army after 20 years, and has been working for the VA Hospital for over 10 years now. We all know life can be difficult, and even more difficult for others. Let's not be so quick to jump to conclusions and be so judgmental and actually help out, at least one day a year, to those is need. Not all people want to be homeless. The homeless were being left alone. Everyone complained, "Ooh, we're scared". "Clean up our streets", etc., so the party that treated the homeless like humans were going to lose their political power due to their humanity. So now we're back criminalizing them and kicking them down the road to make the complainers happy. Yes, police are a problem, but when it comes to the homeless its the public who want to not see them (but not actively help them) who are the problem. Also keep in mind the judge in the LA case who ruled that LA County had to magically solve homelessness or house all homeless in about 6 months. With a timeline like that, the easiest solution to make the biggest change is to criminalize homelessness and kick them down the street far enough to be out of the County.
As for why the BILLIONS of dollars California spends each year on ending homeless is having so little success, that's the real crime there.

Having read how much these shelters and agencies are actually PAID to literally warehouse people, and keeping them homeless as a result, it makes ones blood pressure rise and even boil over ! If people Google " profiting off the homeless," you will see what's really going on,and I wish more homeowners would do this also,to be educated on just how tax money is stolen by officials, instead of going into housing for both working class and homeless people. For most of the week, there's been articles on how " regular" people are catching on to just how much mismanaging has gone on, regarding this ongoing humanitarian crisis. They need to see for themselves how corruption, deals behind closed doors, between politicians', the agencies, the police, city councils- and lastly, real estate lobbyists and speculators, developers have kept the apartments in low supply for 40 years, because it profits THEM. My prayers go out to this hero.* We need to take care of our own first before illegal immigrants and people such as vets should be at the top of the list to be helped without question PERIOD.*

Its people like this homeless guy, that society should give an honourable award to, for his very noble ideas towards helping his fellow human being! I would call it simply 'The humanitarian award'

That thing that happened to his wife, happened to me. I cut my leg, didn't think it was big deal, got blood infection and ended up in a hospital for a week. With a 100k hospital bill afterwards.

I'm sorry to hear about his situation. I'm lucky. In my old stomping grounds, nonetheless... I'm a vet too, 16 years of military service, medically retired Ssg, US ARMY. OIF vet and I am very lucky. The government takes good care of me. I am lucky to have a descent career.... Grateful for all I have.

"These people", as a user called them, serviced their country. He protected many, including those saying bs. This man IS still working; he's not waiting for someone to pick him up and help him out. Watch the full video. Ignoring poverty does not make it disappear.

My opinion is the food stamps office you go to should issue the food stamps asap (you need to eat) and they can easily see the date(s) when your income changes from pending to approved to stop the food stamp benefits. If there is a time delay they can retroactively recoup the difference and you as the benefits receiver can set aside some money in case you have to repay. This no food stamps benefits while pending leaves you to go hungry which seems very wrong (only say seems since there are lots of rules, people are to follow rules, yet letting someone go hungry is terrible).
Also, if there is a time gap between when you applied and now, possibly retroactive benefits to allow you to begin eating well sooner rather than later (all laws considered and with consideration they may be contributing to health issues if you are not eating).
