Homeless Man Used to Be a Banker Before the Recession

  • At first, Mark didn't want to talk on camera. We chatted for a bit and as I started to walk away he asked for a business card. He wanted to know what the video would be used for, how it would be used, and what organizations I was connected to. I assured him this project was completely independent and my only agenda was to tell the homeless story with real people telling real stories unedited and uncensored. Mark is extremely intelligent and articulate. His story really wrecked me because I could identify with so much of it. This is a great story. I hope Marks story and the other stories on this vlog inspires you to continue the homeless conversation.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, theyíre on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as CZcams, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and canít ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nationís most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath ñ its founder ñ and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of Americaís homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

The people that are critical of this man do so out of their own sense of fear and cowardice about such a thing ever happening to them or loved ones they know. Thus to mollify that anxiety they aim to create distance between one's self and from such a reality ever coming to fruition by trying to make the homeless man seem bad in ways that they themselves, or any person acting decently, would ever fall victim to.
People also derive a lot of pride and soundness of mind from the idea that their country and value system is great as-is. Thus they see the idea of a good man having to live homeless as an attack on the notion of the justness and goodness of their culture and country: things which their personal senses of identity can be deeply wrapped up in. So they narcissistically attack him to undermine the credibility of the perceived slight on one's own culture which the homeless being a good person represents.

I wish these stories were longer. I could hear each and every story for at least 30 minutes. I really like this guy, how is he doing?

I wonder how this guys is doing now. I mean, this interview was recorded in 2008, and it's been almost 10 years since then. In any case, I hope he's doing well, and isn't homeless anymore. He's too intelligent to be wasting away on the streets, so I hope his situation has been sorted out, and he's found a home, and can make a living, or at least draw on social security. I'm sure he's old enough by now to draw SS. It makes me really sad when I see any homeless people, and I wish there were more services available to help them either get on SS for disability, help them find jobs, get into university, and above all help them find homes to live in. There are so many abandoned buildings, but the corporations that build these buildings are too greedy to give them away, or sell them for a decent price to be built into apartments for low income folks. The United States has the highest homelessness statics in the world, so if other countries have successfully figured out a way to keep their citizens from becoming homeless, then the United States could do that as well. However, we live in a very greedy country, where the federal, and state officials want to keep a lot of that money for themselves instead of helping their people like they should.

The same thing happened to me with my storage unit, over ten dollars owed, one day late, that I tried to pay and they wouldn’t accept it. It’s so traumatizing, I can barely speak about it, and it was more than ten years ago.

What a terribly sad story. An articulate guy with a good head on his shoulders who went through a lot of terrible things. That story about his stuff in storage is some of the saddest shit I've heard. I wonder where he is now.

So, he lost his job, his wife, his child and his home. You know what scares me most here? How quickly all this can happen at once.

It didn’t happen quickly. It took a while he just failed to notice it was happening.
