  • The Cuphead DLC has added a ton of fun easter eggs and story bits. And its finally driven me mad. Mortimer Freeze is a cult leader, but what exactly are the plans of the Snow Cult Scuffle? And how does Hilda Berg fit into all of this? What is the ice palace? who is that snow golem? Bepi the Clown?

    Actually with how classic cartoons used to nearly copy-paste character archetypes, it makes perfect sense to me that Hilda and Mortimer (two individuals involved with witchcraft, astrology and demonic whatnot) would have the classic witchy nose at the height of their power

    Here's an alternate take on Mortimer's Tarot card attack that I think makes more sense. Mortimer is telling the cups their fortune. With the sun card, he's telling them how great it is to have Ms. Chalice join them on their adventure. With the moon card, they're unknowingly Chef Saltbaker's minions. Attacking everyone on the island and stealing the ingredients for the Wondertart for him. And finally, the three swords. Which tells them that Chef Saltbaker's playing the cups for saps. Intending to use a living soul as the secret ingredient and try to kill the other two cups!
    Personally, I think Mortimer Freeze is more benevolent than the theories in this video make him out to be.

    • @invhazion8141
      @invhazion8141 Před rokem +11

      If we use the traditional format of one card for the past, one for the present and one for the future, I reckon the moon would be the past (representing the cups’ experiences fighting everyone in isles 1-3 and in hell since you could argue there are themes of deception there, but it’s also possible to be about how you’re deceived when talking to saltbaker for the first time). The sun is the present (things are going well and there’s hope for the future of ms chalice) and the 3 of swords is of the future, where saltbaker betrays them. A fundamentally sorrowful experience could be either describing the past or the future, however, but the moon can’t be the future card because by then there won’t be any deception anymore

    Remember that during Mortimer’s third phase, he is simply still just “inside” the snowflake just as he was the snow golem. When he throws the buckets at you, he’s summoning them with his own two arms as he’s piloting essentially this frozen “mech” of sorts. I always thought it was interesting that mortimer never actually has the ability to change form, he just plays dress-up for the whole fight.

    I'd like to think that in reality there isn't a snow cult- instead Mortimer's just insane yet lonely so to compensate for his crippling loneliness, he MADE every cult member. Considering his second phase, it's not exactly too far off. Not to mention just how in his losing screen of the first phase- "It'll be a warm December before I let you be a member"- it implies that he won't LET people join the cult. Why though? Well because he thinks actual people are probably going to backstab him

      She does owe her soul to the devil, so that sounds solid. Unlike most other bosses in the main game, Hilda actually seems to actively use powers that seem to be unnatural to her - she's a blimp, but her main ability is for some reason the power over stars. Even the queen bee has a magic wand that visually suits her theme. I'd guess that she's literally using a sort of witchcraft, and that's why her soul contract started acting up in the middle of the fight - because she was directly drawing power from it.

    The way I see it, you're one of three thing, Earthbound, Semi-Astral, or an Astral being. Characters like Cuphead and Mugman, are Earthbound, as they're obviously very alive, however like Ms.Chalice, upon death their souls move into the Astral plane. They can "return" and interact with Earthbound beings, but ultimately can't do much besides move physical objects or get parried. Semi-Astral beings are characters like Hilda Berg and Ol' Mortimer here. They draw power from the Astral Plane, giving them abilities that are unlike anything an Earthbound being could hope to achieve. For the most part, they're simply stronger Earthbound beings. Finally, there's Astral Beings, such as the Phantom Express, and The Devil himself. These beings either live withn, or draw extreme power from the Astral Plane. Being an Astral being allows you to return to a physical form, or possibly grant yourself one, however this is only if you're strong enough to draw such power from the Astral Plane. Personally, I see the reason Saltbaker wanting to gain Astral powers, is to become immortal, however the reason he chooses to be immortal, is to maintain his title as Greatest Chef in all the Land, with the Wondertart becoming his sole reason to keep the role, while functioning as his Magnum Opus as well. That's just a theory though...a CUPHEAD theory! Thanks for reading

  • @Artcat932
    @Artcat932 Před rokem +127

    Hers my try at making a theory about this:
    I want to remind everyone that the main game bosses made a deal with the devil whilst the DLC bosses didn’t. I think Hilda Burg made a deal to turn her into a sort of demigod, which lets her transform into godly celestial beings including a moon. I think that Mortimer worships Hilda, the god of the celestial beings, and inducts cult members to experiment on them to discover a way for him to become a similar god but not by making a deal with the devil.
    The reason I think he experiments on the members is because the beast he summons is just a bulkier what I assume a more powerful version of the bucket wearing members in the background. Perhaps he’s a failed experiment that didn’t fully become a god but made him extremely powerful, and the final snowflake is the final experiment, a being that can summon energy shooting enemies and float in mid air, just like Hilda floating in the sky with her energy shooting UFOs.
    In the end, Cuphead manages to destroy his form and cause to revert back to regular Mortimer.

    Perhaps Werner and The Howling aces were at war with each other, then Werner signed his soul away so he could fight the howling aces with the very cats they used again't him. Since Werner and his battle have lots of references to War and also that Werner speaks German, and the Howling Aces look like a military army... I usually just go by the Casino Cups, (fan comic), version of Hilda Bergs story. If you haven’t read that part of the comic, I shall enlighten you. Hilda was a pilot who was paralyzed in a crash and she made a deal with the Devil to and the Devil quotes, “Get her back into the sky no matter what.”, so he got creative and turned her into a mechanical being with the ability to take many forms including a moon.

Possibly Mortimer freeze sacrificing one of the members.. that's why there's alot of weird gasps and stuff.. and then that's where that weird laugh comes from.I think this is the devil taking the member or Mortimer freeze. So we know why the devil would laugh. HES F- IN EVIL! But. Mortimer must be a monster.. his true form is that snow flake!He died in it .. came back with the Wondertart that chef saltbaker made possibly then he leaded a cult tricked them into making him into his powerful form again... So he can RULE!!!!

    During cult indoctrination, they have a step where they show punishment or “withhold the prize” which is what the swords represent. The sun is the prize, the moon is the leader, and the swords are the punishment. This means that if someone goes against the cult, they are given the punishment (here quite literally with three swords), showing how the player is in the wrong (through the cults eyes) because they will never get the prize.
    I think it’s intentional that the thing they’re being promised, a sun, is what would kill the whole snow cult, due to melting. Maybe this is sort of the same type of thing as the ascension types of cult that causes dozens and sometimes even hundreds of people to die.

  • @Punykirby
    @Punykirby Před rokem +1

    2:19 I think its either the crowd of Snow people getting hype for the fight, as the area looks similar to a colosseum, or its some sort of cult séance
    Something else interesting is how similar Mortimer and Hilda really are
    Both have long noses, both have a pointy headpiece (Hilda's weather vane, and Mortimer's hat), both are rotund in their first phase (Not counting Hilda's Intro appearance) also this may be a stretch, but Hilda gets yellow eyes like Mortimer when in a constellation phase
    You should also take into consideration that maybe Mortimer fully made the cult, we see him make ice shards that attack you, and the snow golem appears not to be alive until Mortimer goes inside him
    He's also fine in the credits after being destroyed
    Mortimer may be able to make snowpeople, so maybe they aren't exactly being used against their will, and they were purposely made to help him in his cult

    With the Snow Cult, I feel like it's not just over-board speculation, but you're missing some obvious details:
    1.) The Cult looks less like what we'd now associate with a cult and more like a silly secret society, ala the Royal Order of the Corn.
    2.) The theme of the location is The Arctic, the "Land of the Midnight Sun." The whale is connected to the Arctic, PS.

    As a freemason, a few things stood out to me about this snow cult.
    1.) The buckets they are wearing may resemble fezzes that The Shriners wear, which is a subset of freemasons.
    2.) The Sun, Moon, and Swords have heavy symbology in Freemasonry. Without having to go deeper by what I mean, I recommend you look more into that.
    3.) Probably the weaker of the few, but Mortimer appears to be more of a Grand Master of this cult. It would kinda make sense given that he’s a wizard. Like I said, it’s definitely weaker compared to my two previous observation, but it’s still food for thought.

    I'm sure people have said this already, but I have the artbook, so I can confirm that the building we fight Mortimer in is supposed to reference a Roman Coliseum. I think it gives the idea of a cult conditioned to enjoy fights to the death.
    Things the book also emphasizes is the snow monster's bucket as well as the throne Mortimer starts his fight on. Not sure what it means, but it's clearly important.
    The monster is in fact a reference to The Snowman (Eshbaugh 1933) and the Jack Frost you mentioned before, among other things.

    My theory for how bebpi ties in to all of this is so when we see Mortimer, freeze or Hilda berg, do this ritual, we see them take a larger and stronger form, same thing with how we see bebpi turn into a large carousel thing and also I think saltbaker does the same ritual because we see him go from twice the size of ms chalice, Cuphead, and mug man to a lot bigger, and we also see him somehow turn non-living ingredients into actual living ingredients and I believe him stealing a soul somehow gave him the powers. The ritual does but a lot stronger, but then when you beat him he loses his power and goes back to his original size and it turns back to day as we see in the cut scene you get after beating him
