    Okay, so I have a point to make about the Mausoleums that I thought of during this video: Note that, as stated at 5:49, whenever Ms. Chalice explores one of the Mausoleums for it's powers, she somehow ends up trapped, regardless of there being no one there to trap her. Also note that there are 3 Mausoleums, one per main island, as well as 3 Super Arts per character, each typically tied to the Astral Plane in some way. ALSO note that, while IRL Mausoleums CAN contain multiple tombs, typically a Mausoleum is created to commemorate someone who was extremely important, and what kind of burial urn is resting in the middle of each Mausoleum? That's right, a chalice! This implies that whoever originally killed Ms. Chalice was so dead-set on her NOT being able to reaccess her powers that they divided her ashes (assumed to contain the powers) between 3 separate islands to try to keep her from unlocking those powers again! This also explains how she keeps getting trapped and needing to be saved, considering that that makes a lot more sense if it's HER who's remains are stored within the Mausoleums. Not only this, but note that a TON of other ghosts ALSO have their sights on the urn, stating that the power resides within it, but considering there's 3 Mausoleums for 3 Super Arts, and the fact that Ms. Chalices Super Arts are completely different from Cuphead and Mugman, it comes off with a lot of unrealized implications toward more of Ms. Chalice's history!
    Also, in terms of the boys' Super Arts being tied to the Astral Plane, while the second and third are pretty self-explainatory, the first one actually seems the least magical of the 3, but when you consider that Ms. Chalice does a similar burst from her head when giving the boys their powers in the first place, it starts to make a lot more sense!..
    Absolutely loving these Cuphead Lore analyses! Keep up the amazing work man!! I can't WAIT to hear what you come up with next! . .

    I don't think the Elder Kettle is as old as the ruins, maybe he's a descendant or something.
    And the warriors probably were defenders of the land who got involved in the astral plane war at some point. That's when most died and the Legendary Chalice became what she's today.
    I don't think mausoleums are that old either, they have glass windows. Also they're not temples, they're basically tombs.

    Okay, so what if there are 3 paths for the souls of the dead
    Sinners who engage in gambling or other ground upon acts are collected by the devil for some type of business purpose, maybe these souls are kept for cleansing and sold back to new bodies for reincarnation, allowing the devil to make a profit on these used souls that have been cleansed of sin and free to be sucked back into a new body whenever they are requested.
    The second path are neutral, souls that are not sinful nor heroic are left to roam, populated abandoned house, spooky woods and graveyards.
    And the final path of course is the astral plane, where it is believed that the bravest of warriors and the kindest of souls live the rest of their afterlives. Ms Chalice I believe is held in high regards for leading the war, whatever that war may be about, perhaps defeating a dangerous beast that threatened the isles or someone who discovered the plane and wished to take its power all to themselves, Chalice and her followers who lived or died in battle were granted a spot in the astral plane.
    However, Chalice has a bit of history with getting away with shoplifting and potential criminal activity, she might be as risk of getting booted out of the astral plane if any of those big guys in charge of it were to catch here. Unlike most spirits in the astral plane where they are fine living the rest of their lives, Charlie tries to get away whenever she can, often trying to hide away from the gods of the Astral plane.
    So in order to get out of their nose and hopefully lay low for a while, she dries the help of chef salt baker to make the wonder tart and live her life a little bit longer and maybe even try to do some good to undo the years of bad deeds.

    I have a theory (heavy speculation alert)
    In rugged ridge, there are statues of what seem to be dish warriors, the most intriguing ones being the statue of a very old kettle, and ms chalice in her 3rd super art. When these warriors died (in most likely a war) their souls went to the astral plane. (Speculation starts now) in the astral plane, time goes backwards, so these warriors must of aged backwards in the astral plane. So, the very old kettle was actually elder kettle but when he came back into the real world, he was younger. Same with ms chalice as she looks much older in the statues. Now why does chef saltbaker want control of the astral plane, well chef saltbaker is like spiritomb from Pokémon, he has souls trapped inside him, and eating the wondertart will bring the souls of the warriors back to life. Why would he want this? Because he wants to re-enact the ancient war.
    Now this theory has a lot of holes:
    How did elder kettle come back to life?
    Why does chef saltbaker have loads of souls in his body?
    Why does he want to re-enact the ancient war?
    Well, I haven’t thought it 100 percent. Share your response and maybe an idea too!

    The Eyes might have a simpler explanation:
    If you’ve ever read the book “The Great Gatsby,” you might know about the “Eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg.” In the setting of the novel, it’s simply an old, worn-out poster. However, the “Eyes” watch the actions of everything that happens across Long Island Sound, which includes all of the events of the novel. George Wilson (a character from the novel), when he mentioned God, looks directly at them as if the eyes represent God’s gaze upon the world.
    What Cuphead might be doing with the eyes is using them as a representation of God. The tapping into the astral plain by all of these figures in the game is representative of the desire to have the power of God, which would explain why the devil wishes to claim their souls.
    The bosses in the game have often committed some form of sin, especially those who try to tap into the astral plain. It would explain why the devil would even want their souls in the first place and why tapping into the astral plain is such a dangerous thing.
    Mortal brings using the astral plain is playing God, which is, itself, a dangerous game to play.

    Hello Internet!
    Welcome to INTERNET THEORY!
    I am back and please ignore those two lines!
    So here's the thing, I have managed to piece together a possible explanation as to what the Astral Dishes are, and what their story is!
    The most notable thing you'll see when you use the exclusive to Ms. Chalice-third super art is that same yellow glow that we've seen in many Astral-related things in Cuphead, and then you'll notice the dishes that don't seem to have that same glow, but rather they look exactly like The Ghost in Phantom Express! But what does this mean? Well think about it, the warriors don't have any yellow glow, and they only show up when Chalice, using the astral abilities she gained from the cookies, summons them! So it appears to me that they do not posses the same astral abilities, and they do not show an interest in coming to the isles unless Chalice, their leader, orders them to do so! Now that explains what the Super Art means, but what is their story?
    I have an answer for that too;
    After some investigating, I think I know what the Astral Warriors' story is! The most obvious thing to note is how they have statues of them put everywhere! So that means that they're historical figures to the fourth Inkwell Isle! Now, why would they be so well known? Well, the Astral War is the reason! Although I agree with the fact that The Astral Warriors fought something that was linked to the Astral Moon, I don't think it was the Astral Moon that they fought! I believe that The Astral War was a war between The Astral Warriors and the Astral Worshippers! Now, I believe so due to one factor, The Mausoleums! Let me explain;
    The Mausoleums hold Container Vases that hold an Astral Super Art for each Mausoleum. And how else would those abilities end up in there, other than the Astral Moon securing those abilities in the Mausoleums! But then, what about the ghosts, why are they protecting them, and why are they pink? I have an answer for that too! Firstly, I believe that the ghosts are the chosen Astral War, Astral Moon worshippers that did the most they could during the war, so the most talented ones! That would explain why they're in the Mausoleums and why they're protecting the abilities. I have reasons to believe that The Astral Moon granted them the ability to interact with everything, and not just things that they died with, unlike the war weapons and the magnifying glass that the detective ghost holds. This would be in exchange for the risk of being killed very easily, as seen and symbolised by the parry moves and the pink look! I also believe that the Inkwell Isles were once a complete island, before being split into four by the Astral Moon, who wanted to end the war, as it's army was losing! The split caused the two war warrior groups to split, ending the war! The warriors then died some time after, due to many different unspecified reasons. This made it possible for the Astral Moon to select some of the best warriors to give limited astral control to. The Moon told the warriors to build containers, disguised as Mausoleums, where the Abilities would be hidden in. Because the containers looked like Mausoleums, and they were filled with ghosts, nobody ever dared to enter them!
    Let me know what you think of this theory!
    And as always, remember that:
    IT'S JUST A THEORY!
    AN INTERNET THEORY!
    I am not MatPat!

    Gnome Berries: They give you the power to transport consciousness to another part of your body.
    Destillery Dough: Cloning or firing streams of light as the Light Bug did.
    Desert Limes: Longer live.
    Mortimer Freeze: They make the soul leave the body when you want.

    It's shocking to me that a game based off of 1930s cartoon style has lore. At first glance it's basic premise is you fight bosses in grueling matches and die repeatedly over and over again.
    But with the DLC release and seeing one of Ms Chalice super art form and the secret bosd fight makes you go "wait this game has lore?!" Studio MDHR did a great job on this game without shoving lore in our faces unlike other franchises.

    This gets into my personal theory/headcannon about power in this universe being tied to one’s domain/influence and/or the soul and astral plane, but it’s my guess that the Devil has both the entire domain of an underworld type realm and the deepest knowledge of the astral plane and he trades this knowledge w/ the various bosses associated w/ the astral. This is why the stronger a boss is the larger a domain they control is or the stronger their control of it is. It is my opinion then, that various characters like Hilda and probably Beppi traded their souls for power over whatever they were passionate about and further bolstered this power with dabbling in whatever these ‘dark’ arts are which grant access to the astral plane, possibly explaining the seeming gulf between them and weaker bosses in the scope of their ability to transform as we see the Devil is one of the most adept at this.

    It's pretty cool that the astral plane is fairly esoteric so it seems if anyone looks hard enough they can find out how to mess around with it. Though safely is a different story. But it makes the world of Cuphead feel kind of like Earth probably did before we discovered so much we know there's no astral plane type thing around just any corner.

    Beeping isn't on the Devil's "bad side", methinks. After all, how did the cups end up in debt to the Devil? They made a deal. I think Beppi basically exploited him- gaining powers of the Astral plane but falling short on his end of the bargain, his own soul. Actually, that'd make an interesting lore video topic- what deals did each of the bosses not follow through with, thus triggering the events of the game?

    I imagine in the case of some of the bosses, they traded their souls for the powers they use against you.
    Like Grim Matchstick growing three heads.
    I'm willing to think for a few of them, their powers are more natural, like for example, Dr. Karl's Robot just falls apart except for the head, and Sally Stageplay is just doing the performance, and is mostly her and her staff doing these things.

    I believe elder kettle is related to that cup statue in rugged ridge (perhaps a son or descendent to it) the potion could have been used for a war that happened in the inkwell isles and I think there might be a tie between the cyclops and the giants (I say giants, plural because there are multiple sleeping giants in the background of the glumstone giant fight)

  • @Lazuli_Starlight
    @Lazuli_Starlight Před rokem +1

    Ok this is gonna be long but I have Thoughts.
    You know one thing I have noticed? A great deal of the 'final transformations' in the bossfights have yellow eyes, even non-astral themed bosses like Cala Maria, Brinybeard's ship and the Dr. Kahl's Robot (who was the one in the contract, not the doctor himself btw!). In fact I think any time the final transformations eyes have color, the color is yellow. Apart from King Dice, funnily enough, who has green eyes. Most of King Dice's casino minibosses have yellow eyes, not just Mangosteen. And if you chose to hand over the contracts the cuphead gang gain yellow eyes. I don't think Saltbaker is outright possessed by the devil, but the yellow eyes could be an indicator that a person is using devil-given power or merely being infernally influenced. Hilder-burg had yellow eyes and red pupils like the devil, but I'm not sure if other characters display this.
    So possibly Yellow Eyes = Devil Influence
    OR it could just be a sign of having magic power or astral power in general. I mean, Saltbaker clearly still has a soul, as seen from his final phase. And if he had a contract with the devil for his powers and refused to honor the deal, the cup brothers would have had to fight him in the base game for his contract like the other base game bosses.
    If non contracted bosses have yellow glowing eyes it could merely be a symbol of power and magic, but we don't know if any of the DLC bosses have infernal influence or not, as the DLC *can* be beaten before you defeat the devil. And the devil is not dead after his defeat, he just had to let the Cup Gang burn the contracts they collected.
    So, TL;DR: its possible you might be on to something here with eyes and the astral plane, or it could be related to the devil.
    The devil creeps me out and the astral plane based power is much cooler in concept in my opinion, so I hope the astral power interpretation is the correct one.
