  • Werner Werman lore has always been really fun to to speculate on, with some cool details and backstory. The Howling Aces seem to have some slight tie-ins with this lore, so I gathered everything I know about the two and made a fun video discussion on them! Also how does Elder Kettle fit into this theory?

    I see it this way:
    - Werner is a WW1 veteran from the Central Powers (either Austria-Hungary or Germany) in either the Western or the Balkans front or even during the Gallipoli campaign.
    - Werner's platoon could have captured the enemy's flag and medals during some sort of failed British amphibious attack, so that could explain the Union Jack and the British war memorabilia.
    - The cat could also be a reference to the Thompson submachine gun (also known as the "Tommy Gun"), which were widely produced from the end of WW1 until WW2. ACME could have taken it literally and produced literal Tom Cat Guns for mass production, thus explaining why the Howling Aces have access to them despite their seemingly lack of connections with Werner. Werner himself could have been inspired by them and attempted to create a far larger, more mechanized version of it from scratch.
    - The Howling Aces are using far more modern technology, so I imagine that they are more likely veterans of some smaller conflict from the interwar years (1919-1938), perhaps even volunteers of the Spanish Civil War. As a result they might be a new generation of war veterans that have little to no connection with Werner, who is still stuck in an outdated, World War 1-esque mentality

I think there could be a connection between Cala Maria and Captain Brineybeard. In Cala's boss fight we see multiple destroyed ships in the background which look a lot like pirate ships. One of Cala's attacks is shooting out ghost pirates. In Brineybeards fight he dosen't seem to have crue which is od since he is a Pirate Captain and his boat is big enough to have multiple people. Cala is also possibly based on Sirens who are famous for luering sailors to their death's. Also this can't be a covinsidence since you unlock Cala by beating Brineybeard so that could be a connection. So my theory is that Cala killed Brineybeard's crue

He turned on the howling commandos but not before using it to kill other rats (Unknown which side.) I'd like to think that maybe Werman and the Howling Aces were old comrades in arms. I know that sounds a little odd, since one is clearly based on the British aircraft, and one is the German's with hints to being among the Marine corps; but... we don't exactly get a solid hint on which side of the line Werman was on. While it's easy to point and go 'he's German, so he must've been against the British.' If he lived in Britain, there is always a chance he could've been drafted to fight for the nation's freedom, and refusal likely would've seen him removed due to the security risk he might've posed (I'm pretty sure if you live in one country, you're expected to uphold the security of the country you live in, and choice to fight would influence whether you can stay, or be removed so); which means there is a chance he might've willingly, or unwillingly fought either alongside, or against them, depending on his choice; which would make the presence of the British flag and medals; make more sense to imply he fought willingly alongside them.
Then again, it could also imply that being a Rat; Werman would steals things from the people he downed, so that's entirely up for interpretation. As for the Howling Aces; I think the reason they have the same cat; is because the Cat they have is the real cat, and the cat Werman has is a robot replica of that cat, he built to aid him in combat. Having it, would allow him to fake his own death; to make it seem convincing to his enemies he was out of the picture; only for him to retreat and come back later with info against them.

as for him serving on the british side or german side, im fairly certain he served for germany, and the british medals and flag are probably just from whoever owns the house, and werner took them simply because he's a rat and he enjoys hoarding things, or he collects war related items, which i'm pretty sure is the case.

While you mention the Inkwell Isles are isolated, there is the opening lines to the cuphead show theme song
“Come on down to the Inkwell Isles.
Just off the coast maybe 29 miles”
This implies that the isles are somewhat near a mainland
Thought the map of the isles in the theme song seem to be inconsistent to the game, with quadratus, the water spirit that tells you how many times you died, is located between elder kettle’s house and Hilda Berg’s observatory, which are inkwell 1, not 2.
So take the Intro with a grain of salt

Maybe the war on Inkwell is the war between The Devils' goons/imps and the peaceful people of the Isle, it could've been raging on for centuries if those ruins are to be believed. Him both being a reference to Jerry from Tom & Jerry and him being German could be a reference to that.

I think the rat designed technologies that were used in the war and sold them to both sides. He could have designed boats for the navy which would explain that award and the non registered one and he may have designed the cats for the howling aces and some tanks. The reason I think they were bought by both sides is he has the Austrian award and he has the German helmet he may have designed and sold to them.
TLDR our rat friend designed technologies for both sides of the war of all varieties and got awards for it.

I did ask this on the Cuphead Reddit. Based off of the uniforms of bother Elder Kettle and Werner, people really indicated that the war E.K. would have fought in was World War 1. Some said that he was part of the British army, which isn't entirely wrong but during that same war, American soldiers had a similar uniform to the British, though not 100% the same.
I think in the terms of Inkwell having a military, either it does but we have not had any indication, or the closet we ever get is a few people who've had experience with war and some are some small militant factions.
I even went far as thinking that the screens of the various wars occuring in the show were tied towards a war that happened around the 1930s but it got a bit weird. As in one was related to the Spanish Civil War, the one with the bombers was related to Italy's invasion of Abyssinia and the tanks relating to the German invasion of Poland. And if you know your history, that doesn't make any sense. But, hey :)

  • @SwiftpawWolffox

I like the idea that Werner wasn't an actual soldier, but someone that horded memoriabilia (military and otherwise, thus the soup can for the tank and the bottle caps), and is using his mechanical skills to build tributes to warfare with his tank and (mouse) traps. Maybe some of those British things are filched from the Aces. Some of the caps are from the casino, which is probably how he got in trouble with the Devil.
Katzenwagon being revealed as another Werner contraption also could be seen as a reference to how Tom and Jerry, while rivals, would also team up against someone that cheesed off both of them.

The theory I came across on TVTropes came to the conclusion that Werner is indeed Austrian, but defected over to the British at some point for whatever reason, and I personally like that idea a lot. No clue how historically viable that is, but also we’re in Fictionland, so who knows what kind of rules apply and what don’t.
The Howling Aces, on the other hand… well I’ll be dead honest: aside from the bulldog indeed reminding me of the bulldog from the Tom and Jerry shorts, my first thought was actually TailSpin. More specifically Don Karnage and his crew. Aside from them, y’know, not being pirates, obviously.

Then why does he have so many references to the German army you may ask, ITS BECAUSE HES A RAT, maybe he was a spy for the British and went in to get information from the German and thus he has some sort of medals for both. This just came of the top of my head and there’s probably a lot of flaws so please correct my ignorance.

A potential tie-in between the Howling Aces and Werner Werman is that he was a German soldier/engineer from Austria who defected to the British side during the conflict. Him being an engineer who defected could explain why both he and the Howling Aces have the Katzenwagen, due to it being an invention made by him during the war. It could also explain why he has both German and British war medals and memorabilia.

Something reallly weird that the Cuphead show revealed is that Werner has an ENGLISH accent instead of German, Austrian or even British so that means he might actually be American.
So i guess he actually belonged to the Ally Powers (both Britain and USA, along some other countries) and because of a case of PTSD from the war he collects stuff from both Austria and Germany.
That would also explain why he releases prisoner rats to help him, but it is uncertain wether they are enemies he killed or allies that died.

Werner's Tom and Jerry reference goes further than just visual similarities, Werner is a rat with a German name, and wearing German military apparel (the spiked helmet worn by them during WW1), while the owner of the house (and probably the "owner" of the Katzenwagen) is British due to the Union Jack flag, Germans in WW1 were known as Gerries (Jerries) and the Brits were known as Tommies, it's literally a layered Tom and Jerry reference and I find it hilarious

  • @MatthewChenault
    @MatthewChenault Před rokem +1

It’s all a reference to World War I and the Interwar period (along with some subtle World War II references).
Werner’s first name happens to be the same name as Werner Von Braun, a German scientist most notable for the development of the V2 during the Second World War.
However, it’s fairly obvious that Werner is meant to represent the mentality of the Great War, since most of what appears in his little lair is references to that war with the name being an outside tongue-and-cheek reference to the German’s capability of designing _Wunderwaffe._
As for the Howling Aces, they’re meant to represent the Interwar fascination with Aircraft and flight in general, which was commonplace during the 1920’s and 1930’s thanks to the exploits of the time (Charles Lindbergh, Richard E. Byrd, etc). It seems the Flying Aces are meant to be modeled after that, though with more of a military spin.

While I don't personally consider the Show or the Comics canon, I do think the Comics do get quite overlooked and could be used for insights on characters, as in Cuphead Volume 2 "Cartoon Chronicles & Calamities" the first titled story, "Building Blast Off!" features Werner Werman as the central character. In the very beginning of the story Werner calls himself "vone high-riding rat during Die Fatten Kasetage of Zee Great Scrap!" This would clearly state he does have military experience in war as he even calls it a war saying "zer ist no more war!"

I'm pulling this idea out of nowhere, but could a potential war in the Cuphead universe be between characters who are animal based, against those item based? It would make sense for Werner and the Howling Aces to serve beside each other (Despite in real life being inspired by both sides of WW1), while explaining why the flask guy is our pilot in the Howling Aces fight, and seems to do this role enthusiastically. It would also explain why the mechs used in these fights; Katz and the Chinook are both animal-based themselves, as a side who is representing animal based characters wouldn't want their mechs to look anything but animalistic to follow the ideals they are fighting for.
