  • Some experimenting with dyeing rubber shifter hoods for you bike. There are so few color options available, but if you start with a light color hood, you can dye them any color you like!

I prefer the darker hood. It contrasts nicely with the bar tape and looks more premium in my opinion.

Dark hoods. Won't show dirt and look really premium like leather. Must say the light ones aren't bad either. Nice job. Thanks for sharing.

I’m sure you could get the lavender ones to look basically perfect by maybe mixing in some black dye with the brown

The leather may also get darker over time though

This is great dye, I've used it to dye disc golf discs and it works great. I also used the black rit dyemore to dye my light red ergon bar tape, turned it into a nice dark maroon color that matches my Poseidon Redwood color almost perfectly. Great stuff. PS I think A&W rootbeer is the winner for your hoods!

Good point, if the hoods do a Giuliani on the first warm ride, you probably won’t want them.

Thats unexpected but an amazing result to be honest. I did not expect to be able to dye rubber that well after casting/molding is complete.

I'm more interested in knowing if anything happened to that very nice stainless pot you did this in. That looked like an All Clad or other quality pot, worth many times what some rubber hoods are worth. I know, I know, but I can't help it. I'm a cyclist but I'm also an avid home cook.

I started with some white silicone R8000 hoods ordered from AliExpress. I already had some of the Rit all-purpose dye from another project, so I thought I would test it. The colour did not take at all after 45min.
Next, I tried the synthetic Rit dye, mixing Sandstone and Apricot to try to achieve an amber-gum colour. The result is quite good!
I brought 2 litres of water to a high simmer, and added a teaspoon of dish detergent. I used 35ml (7 tsp) of the Sandstone dye, and 25ml (5 tsp) of the Apricot dye, and kept the hoods in the bath at a high simmer for two hours, stirring regularly.
After one hour I had mostly achieved the colour, and had also boiled off about a litre of water. I topped up the pot to 2 litres and the second hour made the colour a little more rich. I don't know that this was really necessary, but I thought I'd try to see what would happen.
The resulting colour is a warmer, slightly orange version of the TRP hoods in this video, which I am very happy with.
I tried a second combination of colours, using 35ml (7 tsp) of Sandstone dye, 15ml (3 tsp) of Apricot dye, and 10ml (2 tsp) of Chocolate Brown dye on a second pair of white hoods. With this combination, I arrived at an "elastic band" colour is about 15 minutes, and then added a couple of more teaspoons each of Chocolate and Apricot to arrive at a slightly more brown-gum colour.
Altogether, this was a very successful experiment, and now I have two great options for a more classic look.
    Thanks, @BikeSauce!

  • @The1trueDave
    @The1trueDave Před 6 měsíci

I definitely prefer the colour the translucent hoods ended up, they look amazing!
I wondered if maybe the translucent plastic is colourless to begin with so perhaps they design in a certain surface 'key' to take the blue or whatever colour they're going to use? So then it responds better to your dye too? Just a theory though :-)

dang that looks hella sick! Curious to see what long term duratbility looks like and also to see if it gets off over time and gets into hands maybe? But yea, my old 6700 hoods on my old bike were brown too from Hudz. New shifters are black and no aftermarket stuff yet so this has gotten me pretty intrigued

I've used dyed hoods for about 18 months. (I was the original commenter who mentioned using this style of rit lol) It doesn't come off on your hands but it will fade over time. When the lavender on my hoods got to be too light after about 8000km, I just re-dyed them!
