    For over a year ago we successfully built a similar upgrade, "bit" more expensive with Ultegra RX derailleur, Garbaruk cage and pulley wheels. But to further extend the range, we ADDED a GRX front derailleur and a FSA Gossamer pro 2x crankset, 30-46, works just fine. (thus even reducing the q-factor to 151mm and extending only by 3mm the crank length to 155mm for the kid)

Note; Manufacturer's website says 1x only - never mind, don't be afraid to try and check with your chainline. 2nd note: we tried at first with the standard GRX pulley wheels, but in the largest (and the smallest?, can't remember) cog the - unfortunately very nice but no bargain - oversized pulley wheels by Garbaruk were better, no chain rub at the cage.

    • @nikveldkamp8630
      @nikveldkamp8630 Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@peterscott4183 theoretical probably but out in the field, it doesn't matter and nobody cares. Once the chain line gets too diagonal and the drivetrain too noisy (chainrub on FD and cogs), you don't have to, but usually simply switch rings. With those wide range cassettes you then basically have two 1x setups where you optimize the chainline. Bottom line, we don't shift in an mathematical sequential order if gearing, but how it makes sense in the terrain. Width of range without converting to 1x12 on Shimano HG was the goal and we have it. Once it gets really steep, you're in the small ring and that's it. The bike originally was equipped with a 32T 1x chainring with let the kid always be the slowest esp. in combo with the small wheels whe upsized a year later when he grew. So much better now, he's confident, reasonably quick among the older/bigger riders and foremost happy riding.

    Great tutorial. I followed it and put a Shimano Deore CSM5100 11/51 on, after some tuning errors on my part, corrected on the 2nd ride, it works great, I don't notice any noise on the lowest gears. It feels faster/smoother than the stock Sunrace 11/42 though I've only a sample size of 1.
    Before my 1st ride I did add 2 links to the 116 HG701 I was running while the bike was in the stand as it was making noise in the lowest cogs, it also seemed the top pully had little contact. It did seem to reduce the noise in the stand but that could have been my initial tuning error, or because I was using Hope pully wheels rather than Shimano.
    Thank you, you've transformed my ride.

    I've used this mod to allow me to run a Di2 RX817 with 11-42 and 48-32 Absolute Black Super Compact oval chainrings. Couldn't get enough chain tension with the standard cage on the 32 ring/smallest cog (Di2 doesn't allow you to engage the smallest 2 cogs anyway). But with this extended cage, I can get all gears (minus the 2 smallest) working fine. The RX817 is, in theory, 1x only but I found it works fine, it just doesn't do the semi-shift thing of moving cogs when you shift between big and small chainrings. The front derailleur still auto trims.

      I used an 812 derailleur because the parallelogram geometry is designed for larger cassettes, I did not try this mod with the 810. I say fairly well because it was quite fiddly to get the b-screw just right. It looks like the XT cassette has more heavily profiled teeth compared to the 11-34 road cassette and I think that contributes to some of the clunking on up shifts. I notice it in the stand, but not on the trail. Or maybe it’s just the bigger jumps between the cogs.

    This brakes my mind and decades of mixandmatching shimano derailleurs... Derailleur total capacity (read cage length) was never a limiting factor for bigger cassettes, but upper pulley offset is. 11sp XT uses GS cage for 1x11-46 and SGS for 2x11-42 - it is needed to make up the slack of front shifter, not to allow for a bigger cassette. If anything, a GS cage of deore 5100 is the right answer for 11-51 cassette.
    So if SGS from XT 8000 helps, you should have gotten by just fine with original GRX 812 GS, only being careful with chain length and B-tension. You can also see how much more movement of the cage is left in the smallest sprocket of the final build.

    is it possible to use a different cage for this hack? Currently Shimano and all vendors across the US are listing the outer plate SGS cage has sold out/out of stock. The amazon link listed in the description is the only one that I can find that has it in stock at double the price. The only time I felt the missed benefit of 1x was during a monstercross event, when my 2x 105 setup (gravel bike was pre-GRX) dropped the chain a couple times, but I don’t do those events often enough to justify a switch. If I did, going to the Ultegra rear mech with clutch might do the trick. This hack looks awesome though.
    As it is, my 105 handles 11-40 and could easily manage 11-42. This is with a Praxis 48/32.

      Do you use a Wolftooth or something to fit the 11-40? I have a GRX RD-RX810 in the back which (according to Shimano) should shift to max 34T in the rear. An 11-40 with a 46-30 in the front would be real nice for the steeper climbs around here.

    Love the experimentation! Thanks!! Probably could use a couple of extra links in the chain and that chain angle on the big cog on back could get interesting, though.
    Like previous comments, I put a 11-40 XT cassette on my 2X GRX 810 that was supposed to have a 34 max cog I think. Didn't really like the way the B-screw was sitting (although it was probably fine) so I got a goat link and the screw now sits flush on the tab - and the system works flawlessly. Curious how much larger of a cassette I could actually put back there now!
    I'm not in the 1x camp and don't think I ever will be. 2X is much better in my view.

      @PauloSerra Před 3 měsíci +1

      I am also in the 2x camp. Tried and 11-42 cassete with the GRX810 (with direct mount goat) and it kind of worked, but shifting was not so nice.
      I didn't have a 40 cassete to try out ... currently running an 11-36 with 32/48 out front.
      Think is, I also do a bit of road riding on the bike, and the small cogs get used, on the larger cassettes, the 11 to 13 cog gap is very noticeable.
      I found out that the SUNRACE 11-36 cassete still has 11-12-13 on the smallest cogs, which is perfect for stretches of road, and then it gets bigger for offroad :)

      Highest gear on the cassette isn't the issue. It's the range of the cassette combined with the front delta (48 - 31) that'll be the limiting factor. People call it 'total capacity'
