  • No Goat Links, no Tanpans, no 3rd party mods. An all-Shimano solution to an affordable, reliable, 11 speed GRX mullet setup for up to 10-51t cassettes.
    The GRX RX822 SGS 12 speed rear derailleur is compatible with GRX 11 speed shifters like GRX 600 and GRX 800. You install the RX 822 like any other derailleur, but max out the high limit screw, which limits it to 11 speeds. You will likely need a longer chain to go with your wide range cassette of choice. This video features an 11 speed Deore 11-51T MTB cassette.

    I wanted to try this, but multiple mechanics told me it wouldn't work. In my mind, it made total sense, but they kept telling me that the grx 822 sgs pull ratio wouldn't allow it. Thanks for confirming my hackster suspicion.

      Bike shops will tell you any changes to a drive train is incompatible because they want more money. I'm running my old XTR 8 speed rear derailleur on a 10 speed bike. I'm also running 8 speed chainring and crank on a 1x11 bike.

    This worked super well for me. GRX 11s shifters. Garbaruk 10-50 11s XD. Eagle XX1 12s chain. Shimano GRX 822 SGS 12s derailleur. Absolute Black 42t chainring. Shifts super well. Better than my Eagle MTB Garbaruk setups. Love this combination on my gravel bike.
    Caveat: check your B limit. I found that matching the line on the derailleur (meant for a 51t) to the 50t Garbaruk was spot on. The other thing. Use the Shimano recommended chain length (4-5 links+ quick link on big to big). I cut mine too short (2 links, vs the 4) and it skipped on the 10t cog while riding. With the right length it shifts better and no skipping.

    • @MrKipperfish
      @MrKipperfish Před 4 měsíci +3

      Well established that the Shimano specs for grx 11 are VERY conservative. 11-40 on the 2x and 11-46 on the 1x RDs has been proven possible for years now. That's plenty for most gravel riders.

    • @Fango925
      @Fango925 Před 4 měsíci +5

      @@MrKipperfish eh you could run 46 but depending on the bike it's not optimal. Plus, I'd rather run 40/11-51t than 38/11-46, especially when gravel is turning more and more aggressive, lots of people run grx on Dropbar ATB's/MTBs so while 32/11-46 is fine for 11speed mountain, it lacks the higher end that you need riding pavement. 51t opens up a few different build options that 46t doesn't

There are a few instances of folks doing it on Reddit, and based on those, I just grabbed an RX822 for this same setup, but with GRX400 10 speed brifters paired to an 11-48 Microshift 10 speed cassette. I've got a Garbaruk cage on an RX812 currently which works fine, but glad to have more options!

    • @DETarch
      @DETarch Před 4 měsíci

      @@gustotrails 10 and 11 speed GRX are all the same pull ratio, so the parts are all interchangeable. The shifters just determine the number of speeds that the rear derailleur moves. So if 11 speed GRX shifters in this video work with the new 12 speed GRX rear derailleur, the 10 speed GRX400 shifters should also work to shift the RX822 across 10 speeds and allow for the use of a wide range 10 speed cassette (eg Microshift 11-48). My RX822 is en route to me currently 👍🏼

      Correct me if i am wrong- i have GRX 400 2x , your saying that if when using the GRX 822 RD paired with the microshift 11-48 cassette. So a wide range 46/30 x 11-48 works in this instance? I’ve been running 11-40 on stock GRX 600 rear derailleur for loaded bikepacking and this would add a decent gear range without having to buy a new group set.

    • @Gregorius421
      @Gregorius421 Před 4 měsíci +3

      @@timothydoyle8269 The RD pull ratio would be the same whether 1-by or 2-by. The problem is how much chain slack the RD can absolve, that's the "Total Capacity" in the specifications. RD-RX822-SGS Total capacity is 41T (usually a few more still works), however your huge range 46/30 x 11-48 would need 46-30 + 48-11 = 16+37 = 53T
      That's a lot of chain to keep tight, I don't think the RD would be able to. In 1-by 48-11 = 37 < 41T would easily work, even 52-11 = 41.
      With 2-by the official max would be 46/30x11-36 (46-30 + 36-11 = 16+25 = 41).
      Another commenter said 46/30x11-40 also works with GRX 11-speed.

    I want to do something similar on a road bike. My new bike has Shimano 2 by 12 mechanical 50/34 and 11/34. My idea is to get the GRX derailleur with a 12 speed 11 to 51 cassette and replace the 34 up front with a 47 tooth chainring. I call this setup "inbetween" gearing. Others call it "halfstep". This yields 24 unique gear ratios over the entire range. What are your thoughts and would it work? Thanks

    I'm riding a Canyon Grizl 6 with a GRX 10-speed 2X setup but I really want to decrease my gear inches on the low end. The GRX-400 rear derailleur is paired to an 11-34 cassette and the front 2X chainring is an RX600 crank with 46-30T rings. I would love to get a larger cassette and/or smaller chainring to help with lowering my gear inches as I use the bike for touring and climbing with an added 50 pounds is really difficult at 25 gear-inches. As it stands now, the rear derailleur only supports up to a 36T cassette, which does almost nothing to lower the gear-inches, taking it from 25 to 23. The goal would be to get that to sub-20 but I am having a time finding drivetrain combos that would work. Any suggestions?

      There is only one series of 10+ speed rear mechs I can think of that can reach close to that capacity: the Microshift XLE. E.g. the RD-M665L model, with 47T capacity and max 46T big cog. A sub-compact 2x crankset, e.g. 46/30, would only really work perfectly with 11-42T without getting in trouble. As I don't own one, I don't know if you can go bigger than that as you can with most Shimano derailleurs, but maybe someone out there has tried it out?

    I bought the derailleur to try this and haven’t found the need to wind the high limit all the way in or anything. It had to be wound in a bit but only what seemed normal for setting up a derailleur.
    My results aren’t as good as yours. My shifters are a bit old and beat though. There seems to be a compromise between the derailleur shifting into the low gear easily but not shifting up to the last 3 high gears easily or not getting into the 51T at all and having good high end shifting.
    It’s probably a bit better than the performance with the tanpan and RD-M6100.

The standard Shimano XT chain is 116 links, which is ok for 34x51, but for 36t you need 118 links. When I finally found the dealers manual it says you might need to add up to 6 full links! I used the CS-M5100 11-51 11sp cassette, GRX RX 822-SGS and a new 11sp chain. Unfortunately, for some reason, the 39t sprocket skipped, clunked and carried on. No amount of indexing or B-screw adjustment (noting new position) worked for me. Every other gear was flawless though. I also tried a different wheelset, new quick link, new cable, hanger alignment, however it made no difference in that 39t sprocket. I also tried a 12sp chain however it wouldn't interface with my 11sp GRX chainring.

I have however, read numerous reports of CS-M5100 cassettes being returned/replaced under warranty due to the rivets being loose and the 4 largest sprockets moving independent of the entire cassette body. In my case, there's a small amount of lateral cassette movement (within tolerance), and the rivets appear intact. • @MrKipperfish
      @MrKipperfish Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@TheBikeSauce The difference is clearly explained on the product page for every single wolftooth chainring that comes in a ST version. It's all about the extended inner plates, look at the diagram. The effective inner width is NOT the same as 11 speed when it comes to 1x. In the case of WolfTooth, running a 12 speed HG+ chain on a 1x ring made for 11 speed shimano chains will be louder and will wear the ring (and likely the chain, though chains are much harder than rings) faster due to the interference of the extended 12 speed HG+ plates with the wider wide teeth on the 11 speed ring. There's really no reason to run an HG+ chain in the setup detailed in the video. The only consideration would be for pulley wheel fit on the chain, but I doubt that will have an appreciable effect on shifting performance. Shimano has always had a rather loose fit of pulley teeth on the chain in the laterial dimension, and doesn't do narrow/wide pulleys. So as long as those 12 speed pulleys have teeth which are the same or very close width to 11 speed pulleys, shifting should be pretty much the same.

      I spent about 25 years riding 2x (and 3x). 1x has its place in the modern era. No one's bending the big cog because they're too strong 😆😆

    Still not clear why this won't work with a GRX 810 double chainset 11 speed 48/31, or am I missing something?

      Chain length will be an issue. Even running 1x the GRX 12sp rear derailleur barely has wiggle room for chain length when using 10-51. Yes you could run 2x for a bail out gear, but the chain would be slack once you get to about the middle of the cassette when in the little ring in the front. Additionally clutched rear derailleurs usually don't allow smooth shifting in the front anyways.

      The rd capacity will limit the 2x range more than the max cog size. Depends on what rings you're running

      46 30@@TheBikeSauce i heard some people putting XT cage on grx rear derailleurs on 2x to put 11-40 cassette.

    I'm no expert, but having recently done the hack of swapping the shift ratio fin on my SRAM Force 1, 11-speed, rear derailleur (Mechanical), onto a SRAM X01 Eagle (12-speed), there was no need to limit the 12-speed rear derailleur into "thinking it's an 11-speed". The shifter is the brains, and determines how gears can be shifted, not the derailleur. Anyway, curious if anyone knows if this GRX RX822 SGS 12 is compatible in terms of pull ratio with Shimano (Dura-Ace, Ultra, 105 11-speed mechanical)? I was think of doing the Goat-link / Tanpan /XT 11-speed thing, but also curious if an XT 12-speed (52T) will work with just a Tanpan?

      You’re right, setting the high limit screw is just a best practice to prevent chain from falling off in the absence of chain tension.

      XT can already take a huge cassette out of the box.

    So you're saying that 11-speed shimano shifters work with 12-speed shimano derailleurs ?

      Do you have the GRX812 RD? That officially works up to 42t and 46t is easy with B screw adjustment
