- The C-17 Globemaster serves as the U.S. Air Force’s primary strategic lift aircraft for global transport of troops and equipment. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required. The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.

My old man worked at McDonnell Douglas's Long Beach, CA Plant when the C-17 took it’s first flight. Interestingly, his father-in-law, my grandfather, worked there at the same time! So the Globemaster III has a special place in my heart🙂
Cool
As a airborne infantry vet, I loved the C-17. It was like a Cadillac to jump. I’ll always have love for the C-130, but the 17 is super smooth and everyone gets their own seat, as opposed to being piled on top of each other on a cargo net bench lol. We flew C-17s from Alaska to Australia non stop, did an in flight rig, then jumped into Australia on a training mission. A C-17 also carried me on a litter to Germany from Iraq when I was wounded in action. Between the C-5, C-17, and C-130 we have a great fleet of fixed wing cargo/utility aircraft.
I worked on the c17 back in 1991 for Douglas aircraft in long beach and my brother was a quality engineer in quatzite..Arizona the same time. Proud of what we did
Worked there also from 1986 to 2003 as one of the Flight Dispatcher. Dispached several of these in test and production besides the other aircraft MDC produced. Miss those days.
I had the joy of sitting in the Captain's seat in a C17 when it last visited the Ysterplaat Airforce Base in South Africa, in 2008. It was fantastic. Thank you USAF. I now fly my own Globemaster in fsx. Blessings to all the guys that fly in this beautiful plane. Happy landings. John
I’ve been inside a C17 at a local airshow. Inside the cargo area is a huge space that could accommodate a huge range of cargo. The rear ramp means many types of vehicles can be driven in. More impressive is it’s short take off and landing capability. To see the C17 do short field landing is awesome.

Back in 1997 the Air Force had static air shows throughout the country, celebrating their 50th birthday. I went to the one at Standiford Field in Louisville, KY. I believe that was one of the greatest experiences that I've ever had. They had the C-17, the C-5 and they had the C-130 in every configuration that you could imagine. It was great.

Just before McDD (original contractor) was bought by Boeing, right after they released this plane, I built two sets of 17 racks of test gear to simulate opens and shorts to test 17 of the 51 on board computers in these things. They had "peg boards" that allowed the testers to simulate any open or shorts in the cabling and demonstrate proper redundant system turnover and activation. It was a pretty cool job and we had two of the head-up units with us to make sure the slide trays on those two racks worked correctly. Lots and lots of inter-rack cable sets. It was a fun job and I am proud that I was a part of it. That was at a place called AP Labs in San Diego. I went on to work at ViaSat and made multiple sets of racks that were called "Stimulators" which were used down at the big Hughes anechoic chamber in Texas to test the F-22 and F-35 and B-1, etc. Hundreds of channels synched up to nanoseconds of each other. That was like 9 racks each and I built three sets of them.
NOTE: A C-130 is NOT 97’ long with a wingspan of 38’10”. Wrong, that is the HEIGHT. The wingspan is over 132’.
I was about to say that lol.

Mine as well. They are absolutely MASSIVE in the sky.
@Bail 10k
and the earth is flat right?
@Bail 10k
actually you are right, the exhaust of those massive engines definitely poop toxic chemicals into our atmosphere. But to think they are purposefully spraying toxic chemicals on the people is just childish. They fly over because they are constantly training. However I will say again those massive engines definitely poop toxins into our atmosphere and that really sucks!
@Bail 10k
well Bail, first of all I typed spews and my jackass spellcheck put poops. I have to
turn off my spell check for sure. Next, chemicals you are referring to are called carcinogens and teratogens, if these things are trying to control the population they sure are doing a lousy job. And if that’s what they are doin we would expect to see a massive number of cancers and baby deformations, but these are both declining. And how exactly do you think they are controlling the population? This is a question asked in goodwill, and I am truly interested. If they were trying to control populations they would be flying routinely over Bangladesh, China and India, not the USA.
moreover bail, dumping carcinogens and teratogens over populations would be a horribly inefficient way of controlling populations. The deep state would poison our drinking water, not the air.

I think of comparisons: it's about the same length of a C-141 but much fatter and wider for larger cargo. It's about 2/3 the size of the C-5 which performed amazingly in Vietnam and other places.
Respect for the troops for sitting 19 hours straight on those tiny seats with extremely limited legroom. How does the military prepare for the very real possibility of deep vein thrombosis under those situations?
You will never know unless you are in the know... Most the time even the ones jumping only know they are about to jump out of a perfectly flying aircraft
Might be an issue for us lazy turds watching CZcams, probably not for these in shape guys and gals. Hehe.
They have crews so they can switch every few hours. To get shut eye and to streach your legs out and they're also in top shape as well
Laying on the floor/ramp is authorized and even encouraged. Guys who are jumping never sit that long. They come from much closer in. While these planes can fly that long, they pretty much never do. Crew time-outs when it comes to flying time and our bases along the way means that it has a chance to land, refuel, crew rest, etc.
wow that plane looks awesome

THE C-17 IS PURE VICIOUS !!!!
My last deployment I was supervising force protection team in Afghanistan. One day I was managing the checkpoint for aircraft traffic entering the active runway, keeping TCN (Third Country Nationals) construction crewmembers from driving vehicles where they weren't supposed to. Had a younger group of military/civilian security on site that weren't as experienced with confrontation. As I was managing the site, I had a TCN blow through our checkpoint on a tractor as a C-17 was approaching the active runway. I had to run up from the opposing checkpoint and charge my weapon in front of his to face to get him to stop. Any other military member would have taken the opportunity to shoot in the desert and get a medal but luckily for him I had enough time to think and sort out my aggression out there beforehand. He drove straight towards me but I charged up and was half a second from blowing his head off. He went back to the first checkpoint, I remember seeing the faces of the C-17 crew members as I escorted the driver back to checkpoint. Found out later the tractor driver got kicked off base 6 months earlier for running over and killing his fellow construction worker with an "earth mover" blade. If I did not realize how we control our own actions whether military or civilian and have the power to make decisions above general authority, I would have made a poorer decision that day. Killing is a final option, not the first.
Excellent story and the ending is to me, what police officers need to be taught and trained.
Fantastic work horse, so useful, here in Australia our airforce have a few, we love them!!
As an American who would love to visit Australia one day, it makes me happy to hear such..much love & peace from Boston ✌🏽
After 19 hours in the air, I cannot imagine the joy of the paratroopers having a relief leak on the ground.

@@1m3agle More than the aircraft's built-in lavatory is necessary at times. When the mission requires added capability, an Air Transportable Galley/Lavatory (ATGL), a Distinguished Visitor (DV) pallet, or a Command and Control (C2) Module can be rolled on. These have lavatories and increased waste storage.
Hard to believe this amazing aeroplane is almost 30 years old! Love it. Shame they don’t build them anymore.

I worked as a structural design engineer for MacDac on the wing design program (I designed the fittings that attach the flaps to the wing). You may want to sharpen the ol’ pencil when measuring the C-130 wingspan.
38’ foot wingspan is a Tad narrow for any operational C-130.
I’ve seen a few that hit the tarmac that 38’ is a genuine measurement for overall wingspan...

The AN-225 loadmaster said the same about the Galaxy.
@@afcgeo882 it was built to be bigger than the C5 for bragging rights. There are only 2 and one is now used for scavenging parts to keep the other flying.
@@thomasblankinship98 Only a single AN-225 was ever made, bud, and even the AN-124 is bigger than the C-5. The other was never operational. It was never completed. The 225 was designed to carry rocket boosters and the Buran space shuttle. 55 AN-124s were built and they were never made to one-up the C-5 as it was meant to be a civilian outsized cargo carrier from the start, unlike the C-5 which was only meant to be military. Russia is now designing its own, updated, military AN-124-102.
HMM but still flying!
It not whether it's bigger or smaller. It was designed to support ground troops so it's capability is to land on gravel, dirt and short runways. To get in and out fast with equipment and supplies.

I was part of the software team at GEC-Avionics for the HUD for this big-ole-gal and can clearly remember watching the maiden flight of P1 (with her long pointy red/white stripped nose probey thing) on 15 September 1991 and have a wall poster from McDonnell Douglas as a "thank you" for getting her to that major milestone. A few weeks later, Jane's did an article of that first test flight and in it was a picture underneath which was the caption "GEC's HUD in TOGA mode showing FMA windows", the picture was a completely blank black square - so not too far from the truth at that time ;-)
I made simulator racks for those HUDs that they bought from AP Labs right before the buy out by Boeing. It had two mount slides on it and a peg board to simulate opens and shorts to ensure that the redundant systems kicked in and worked right. Other racks for 16 of the onboard systems to check proper redundant system operation as well. Two sets of each, so they even ordered the test systems in redundant fashion. :-)
@@cosmicraysshotsintothelight Are you implying my software could fail? LOL!!! 😉
@@TheOneTrueSpLiT It simulated hardware shorts and opens in the interconnect cables on 17 of the 51 onboard computers, and would be used to prove that your software actually works to enable the redundant standby systems. But hey, you may not even have written any of that. It could be 'hard wired' or in firmware. So you probably can't even tell me about it. :-P
@@cosmicraysshotsintothelight We had an "Independent Test Group" who were a mix of hardware and software engineers that had one of our HUDs connected to a test bench consisting of various Logic Analysers and bespoke gear to give the HUD simulated data in order to test all of the HUD's functionality, as well as BIT, we even had a joystick connected to the test bench so we could "fly" the HUD while giving it the data for all sorts of simulated scenarios. That's as much involvement I had with the test setups, sure I had to do unit and integration test on the modules of code but other than "flying" the HUD that's as much involvement I had with the hardware - I never really understood most of it and still don't to this day, and the same applies for networks, mobile phones and printers!
@@TheOneTrueSpLiT These were racks meant to test for interconnect cable failures and were far more simple than your "stimulation" equipment. Orders of magnitude more simple. They were simply meant to test the changeover function of how redundant hardware sets were/are supposed to operate. They had a pegboard where all the cables entered and exited and small 'shorting bars' in place to show normal connects and then to simulate a cabling short or open by (mis)placing or removing them, to see if the second unit kicked in. So we had two slide mounts on each rack made for each type of on board computer and pegboards above each as break out boxes for the cabling. Very simple stuff and no real electronic diagnostic hardware at all, IIRC. There was a master unit which was, IIR a VAX/VMS chassis with customer supplied boards and software. Probably written and supplied by yous guys. :-)

This plane is great to fly on, it is smooth flying and powerful. We used to live next to the active runway at FOB Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq and the C-17 was a regular guest. I had the privilege of watching it take off at night and that beast would rotate and accelerate at such a steep angle that it was comparable to a fighter jet taking off, and I noticed that even without Night Vision you could see the heat in the exhaust end glowing red! I flew as the only passenger once, from Hungary to Germany and I was invited up to the flight deck, I noticed that they had full-color weather radar and Nav, glass cockpit and really comfortable looking seats, NICE! We left Iraq on a C17 and as soon as we pulled off of the runway, the Threat Warning Reciever detected an anti-aircraft seeker targeting our aircraft and the pilot immediately deployed chaff and anti AA flares and he pulled it hard left and right banking maneuvers and for awhile dropped it down to the deck, of course, this was a total surprise to us because the pilot was too busy saving our lives and was unable to narrate the events in real-time! Anyhow, once we were out of danger he explained what we had just endured, and he and the rest of the crew received a great round of applause from all of us!
no chaff but yes to flares and some other stuff :)
There is no "Threat Warning Receiver" per se on the C-17. The defensive systems on the aircraft consist of the Missile Warning System, the Countermeasures Dispensing System, and the Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures system. To some degree they are integrated with each other.
@@c17nav I understand that "technically" the system is not termed a "threat warning receiver," however missiles are a "threat" and the system gives you some sort of "warning", rest assured I will never utilize the term "threat warning receiver" in regards to the C-17 ever again!
