Thank you so much for all the comments everyone!
I'm truely overwhelmed!
Here's an idea for your next video. Why don't you make a list of best teen horror movies?
This video was amazing! I know it might be hard to narrow down, but could you do a list of your top 10 or top 15 favorite horror films? In lots of videos you mention that a certain movie is in your top 5 or 3 and I’m curious to know the actual lists! 💖
Knew a ton of people that said the tree or the clown in poltergeist scared the crap out of them.
spookyastronauts I really saw the films like Doom Asylum, The Gingerdead Man, The Crazies and a cult classic Bikini Bloodbath on Midnight Pulp, right!?
Holy cow! This video just hit 10k views!
Veronica was a cool movie but really NOT that scary.
Also Hereditary is going to be a classic.
for sure
I actually found Veronica to be very boring 💤... Dont know, maybe it's just me. Or maybe the hype was too overwhelming.
J H hereditary on rotten tomatoes got a green splat or green bucket, while midsommer was rated better.
I watched it, it isn’t that scary ;_;
I *hated* Veronica ngl. Felt like yet another bland Conjuring clone. Ugh.
I'm 44 and The Exorcist still makes me feel uncomfortable. I love/hate that movie. And always will.
Same. And the book is actually really good. And the second book, Legion, scared me, too.
I’m 53 and could not watch that movie all the way through until I was about 40 or so. I still can’t watch it alone.
I went to see the re-release version with the spider walk in the movie theatre. There were teens there who laughed at the crucifix scene, then proceeded to get the scares of their lives. Two were crying and looked so scared walking out I kinda felt bad
When the exorcist came out, there was nothing else like it, it truly was groundbreaking. I’m 61 years old and I have never seen a movie that even comes close to how the Exorcist scared me. I honestly wish I could see it for the first time again. I keep hoping to find a movie that scares me as much and I’m always disappointed.
That scene when Charlie loses her head, and the subsequent scenes are so haunting and powerful. One of the best movies in recent time.
But not scary. Shocking, disturbing, sad ... not scary.
RealTalk yeah I wouldn’t say it was scary, but jarring. The more haunting part was when the mother found the body. That was brutal.
Hereditary is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Loved it.
Yeah... hereditary is scary. And its not jyst where tge kid loses her head - its what comes after with the brother so in shock he just drives home znd goes to bed. It sounds like a stupid reaction but I can grok tge idea if it - the brother is in shock and if preeented with the same i may do the same.
@@Davylp it depends. In the moment when you first see the movie its more disturbing than scary. But on a second watch when you know what is going on id argue its scary.
One that messed me up a lot was the descent. I’m already scared of the dark and the idea of something in a cave coming to kill me is HORRIFYING.
But my favorite horror movie is the conjuring. Some of the jump scares still get me.
I think The Descent is one of the best horror films, it was well shot and claustrophobic. The characters were also likeable
@@bwcat5586 I wasn't a big fan of The Descent, somewhat contrary to a lot of fans, I found Neil Marshall's earlier film, Dog Soldiers, far more scary and effective. Mainly because of the main characters being stranded in the middle of nowshere.
“It’s all subjective, but I’m telling you off” 😂
😜😜😜😜
I’m scared of insidious
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe
Surprised me a lot, wasn't expecting to be crept out that much with such a simple movie.
This movie stuck with me awhile
I TRIED so hard to like it but i couldn’t 🥴
@@hectorflores9939 its ok Mr. Flores. We all have tasted and opinions, don't be forced into liking a movie. I actually was affected because I was working as a makeup artist in a funeral parlor during 8PM-4AM. It's your artistic point of view in the end. Thank you for replying after so long by the way! HAHAHA
Hope you and your loved ones are ok during this pandemic, take care brother!
I was pleasantly surprised by this one, its on my rotation to watch every couple years.
I completely agree. Me and My mom watched it at midnight and we were terrified.
My mom watched Jaws in the cinema when it first came out as a child and she was so terrified that she doesn’t go into the ocean ever, she’s 52 now.
Why is Oculus never mentioned on any of these lists?! That movie was fantastic!
Yes it's definitely underrated. I thought there was some really terrifying scenes!
Especially odd since she loves that director
It was fun but not scary in conventional way
bruh its been years since i watched Martyrs and im still not over it... also that one Lake Mungo scene yikes
Martyrs made me stop watching horror for a month or so :)
Martyrs is one film that stuck with ne as well...I recommend it to anyone who will listen
Thank u for the recommendation guys! Ima watch it yall😂
I only watched SpookyRice’s breakdown of Martyrs and just that lowkey scarred me. I cant watch the actual film
@@MsGraciie13 It does really sound scary but I'll risk it xD
Insidious totally belongs on this list. I actually screamed when i watched it the first time and i am not easily scared by horror movies anymore.
Insidious 1 and 2 are quality.
Only jump scares nothing else 🤧
Nothing for the original Nightmare on Elm Street? I’m 43, that movie terrified everyone I knew.
I'm 43 too, I watched it when I was young and it traumatized me. For me it's the number one ^_^ I remember me pausing the VHS on a multiple times to brace myself :D
Ehh it's scary but nothing compared to the other movies on this list. It must be scary because of when you grew up. I was born in 1998 and The Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw Massacre scared the shit out of me, and Nightmare on Elm Street is amazing and slightly campy, but definitely not that scary.
Why?
Really? As a kid, I remember seeing the Original Nightmare on Elm Street film. Afterwards, I loved it so much, I disguised myself like Freddy Krueger, then I went around to random houses, knocked on doors, and laughed like Freddy when they answered the door. Then I ran away. They even put it in the local news paper of crazy insedents that happened. I never got caught. I've been a big horror fan since my first horror movie experience as a kid in theaters to see...Friday the 13th:part 4. It changed my life permanently. Stay spooky everyone.
If still recommend here films...

Guess : The Exorcist
Personal : Ju On- The Grudge
ding ding ding 🔔
Good choice but I find Ju On - The Curse is creepier. I think it’s the washed out colors that do it for me.
Juon the curse 2 (2000) is the most terrifying horror movie ever to me. The one that toshio's teacher come to visit and found out that toshio's mom had crush on him.
OOF, Ju-On is a different kind of scarring especially when I saw it for the first time as a child
Same, I'd had added a tale of two sisters
I watched The Exorcist for the first time semi-recently as an adult and it made me a little sad because I didn't find it very scary at all. It was good, don't get me wrong, I just can't really see what was so scary about it.
You explained the problem as to why it wasn't scary... you watched it recently. It was very scary for its time.
Did you watch the director’s cut?
The Wailing is one of the scariest and creepiest movies I’ve watched.
"The Entity" with Barbara Hershey is the only movie that had me terrified to be alone in my house for a month or so. Adding to the horror factor it also had a lot of wierd stuff that happened during filming and is based on a true story
Never gets the recognition it deserves and baaed on a true story
Only movie that has ever "scared" me is The Fourth Kind. I had something similar happen to me in 1992 that is forever etched in the darkest recess of my memory, and this film brought it to the forefront.
Dude - that one freaked me out too. But what scared me even more was Fire in the Sky. Dark Skies also shook me. Realistic alien abduction movies scare the ever living shit out o me. Sometimes not until later - like I'm fine when I watch it. But later that night when I'm alone in the dark...oh man. Terrified.
I was in High School when Jaws was released, and for TWO YEARS it literally DESTROYED beach business around the world!!
I saw it when I was a kid, when my parents were out and I had access to the cable tv...
I will never, ever swim in the ocean again, and it's been DECADES.
I've tried, and I have panic attacks, seeing sharks everywhere.
The grudge and The Ring scared the shit out of me when I was younger 😭
Τhey are the only movies that some scenes made the hair of neck stund up like needles!
I remember when i watched the grudge with my brothers and it scared the shit out of hs
The Ring scared me. The Grudge made me laugh and roll me eyes.
I’ve never been so scared by a movie as I was of Hereditary. I was never a horror fan at all, but after Hereditary, it made me view the genre completely differently. The whole time I was watching it, I was just grateful I didn’t see it in the cinemas
Hereditary is possibly the best movie I’ve ever seen. I don’t find it scary, but disturbing? Most definitely.
What about (rec)?
Evil dead from 2013 is also pretty scary to me
nah
its epic but not really scary
yes ; the new evil dead was more scary
Rec was crazy
The gore in evil dead 2013 was so gross and disturbing. I really love that movie, I find it underrated.
That attic scene in Rec, damn. I saw this during a time that I slept under an open attic. Fun times.
The face of the Crypt Keeper was the most horrifying, scary thing to me as a child. The Tales from the Crypt movies were just coming out, and the character's face was plastered everywhere in the cinema and would have to hide in my mom's arms as we walked down the aisle to our movie. Nowadays, I started watching the old TV show and I was tickled by how tongue in cheek the stories were, also it was fun to see well-known actors do their earlier work. Also, the late Christopher Reeves.
The Descent really freaked me out, especially because I'm claustrophobic!
Check out the new French movie Meandre
In my opinion. Top three scariest films to me are “Lake Mungo”, “The Exorcist”, and “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”
Lightnin' Caruso it’s on the ‘Tubi TV’ app for free. Seriously recommend checking it out
@@reneepena2208 which movie?
The Thing, Relic, The Fog, Alien, The Howling and American Werewolf in London. 😁
I like how you gave props to Rosemary's baby ;-).
Which imo is actually more terrifying than the Exorcist
One of my all time favorites! I’m glad she didn’t just choose films from this decade, like most of the comments
I rewatched this movie and that scene when she sees the baby for the first time is wow.
That was an awesome job! Thanks for all your work :)
Honestly Sinister is one of the very few movies that have scared me. Most of the time in movies I feel separated enough that they do not actually
scare me.
I loved (hated) sinister too. So creepy!
Agree creepy as hell.
Yea I really love sound effects and how they're used in this movie
Hereditary is one of the most harrowing and emotional horror movies I think, the scene where Toni Collette is crying and wailing after Charlie dies is one of the most painful bits of film I've ever seen - genuinely horrifying, I went to see it on my own at the cinema and I've never needed a hug so much after watching a film. So good and so deserving of all the nominations for this list! Also the Blaire Witch Project is so unsettling and creepy and freaked me out, I have no shame in saying it's scary!
Hereditary was the first film in YEARS that truly shook me 😅
Guess: exorcist
Personal: Hereditary/the grudge
ding ding ding 🔔
I can't believe that The Thing wasn't on this list but I guess this is a general list and a lot of people don't know about The Thing if they aren't horror fans. Great video! Thanks for your hard work researching this :)
2018's "Hereditary" and 2001's "Session 9" hit that sweet spot of showing just enough to be visceral, but ambiguous enough to haunt and linger for years afterward. Those would be my two choices.
1. Rosmary Baby
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
3. Eyes without a face
4. Black Christmas
5. Last house on the left / Funny Games
The original Funny Games Is Terrifying. Remake is 🗑.
1,3 and 5 are not scary they are good horror movies but not scary.
How is eyes without a face, Rosemary Baby and funny games "" scary""? They r just great and unsettling, but not scary at all.. it's not even a subjective matter.. i think the video is about the scariest ones and not the best ones.. I must have missed the point lol
@@flip9986 i don't know man, Rosmary baby was more of a scary one for me, but eyes without a face i think the reason it scared me that much was that i watched it as a kid and had numerous nightmares about it... if my choice was the atmospheric and unsettling there were other choices like Rabbits or Mullholland Drive or Cache (from haneke) but even for funny games i consider it as more of a scary film cause it's way more generic than his other films and uses horror film's techniques to shock and scare you
Max Buttrill first of all there are actually differences between the two if you’ve seen them. On top of that the American version has worse casting and acting and the whole atmosphere is worse. Haneke isn’t perfect, he made a mistake when he made the remake
My guess is The Exorcist. I don't find it scary, but everyone else seems to.
Also, the scariest movie that I've ever seen is John Carpenter's The Thing.
ding ding ding 🔔
those that find it scary its probably when they were young when they watch it , which voids out in this poll , meaning if you watch it now , the special effects sucks
I thought the Exorcist was hilarious, and I saw it back in the 70s...OMG did I just confess to being the Zodiac?
For some reason I found exorcist 3 scarier than the first one
The thing is my favorite movie of all time and it's a master of suspense and a beautiful set and soundtrack with some of the best practical Gore of all time. There is much more disturbing and scary content out there than the thing like A Serbian film.
I just found your channel, and am obsessed with your content. I love topics like this.
It really is such a broad question to answer because it is completely subjective; you're totally right. Objectively, the overwhelming acclaim for The Exorcist could absolutely make it the scariest film ever made. However, when I first saw it, I really wasn't scared at all. I think I learned too much about how it was made, the practical effects, etc., and so I was taken out of what could have been a really horrifying experience. I'll have to watch it again; it's been a very long time.
My pick for the scariest film ever made (or the film that affected me the most) would have to be Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I have never been more viscerally affected by a film. I couldn't move for an hour after I first watched it, and I was filled with such disgust and dread.
It's interesting to see how your collective lists played out (very happy to see such love for Hereditary; that film changed my life and affected me greatly). Looking forward to more content!!
I loved this video! Such a thorough, well put together list.
Haha I love the editing while explaining your ranking system 😂
Guess: The Exorcist
Which is also my personal! This movie terrified me as a kid (trailers during Halloween) and as an adult I’ve only been able to watch it once and it had to be during the day haha.
That movie straight up traumatized me
ding ding ding 🔔
Veronica was horrifying...in it's stupidity and over-hype.
Exactly
Eh, I thought is was alright. Not great, but not bad either.
Thanks for going through all those platforms and data to put this together. Normally these lists will have a few good picks and then a bunch of titles like Annabelle, but every movie you mention is spectacular in some way. They may not all scare me (Psycho) or they may not scare me anymore (I was lucky enough to see Jaws and Poltergeist in the theatres when I was young) but I can easily see how each of them could keep someone up at night. Or away from the beach.
I’m surprised The Omen and Se7en didn’t make the list anywhere. Part of me thinks it’s the age bracket, but every list has The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, and Blair Witch.
Again, really great lists...
**My guess is the exorcist
Personal either the ring of the grudge. The grudge really messed me up as a kid because of that one scene where that one lady is hiding under her blanket and she still got taken. It made me realize that nowhere is safe and made me really paranoid 😂😂
ding ding ding 🔔
Yay
Guess: The Exorcist. Personally, Jacob's Ladder.
Jacob's Ladder is a good answer.
@@Nicolas.Vincent I think it looks terrible. Looks really dumbed down and not nearly as moody. But I'll give it a chance when it comes out.
Jacob's Ladder was way before it's time, an amazing film. Hereditary was amazing. Loved Suspiria. I read 'The Exorcist' when I was nine, stole it from my parents, slept at the end of their bed for about a year!!!....thought I was going to be possessed!!. I think the third exorcist, I think, was pretty terrifying also. The scissor scene. The Babadook was pretty scary or It follows. The Shining was a great book and I loved the film.
@@Nicolas.Vincent I'm here from the future to tell that the remake is shit
I'm really really impressed with your data crunching, which I didn't really understand but it's really cool that you approached the question from a scientific perspective. And ok, after watching the whole video I totally understand why that one got number one. Thanks, Emma!
Suprised the original Wolf Creek is never mentiond on these lists
Agreed. I couldn't sleep after I watched that one
1. Love the sweater! 2. You talking about math in this video is the scariest movie ever made. 3. I think the #1 spot will either be Exorcist or Blair Witch.
Guess: The Exorcist. Personal: As above so below that one messed me up
My husband and I just saw As Above, So Below for the first time this week and he loved it. I'd put off watching it for so long because when it came out there had been far too many poorly done found footage movies and it got bad reviews so I didn't want to waste my time on it. I was pleasantly surprised by it; was it great? Not in my opinion but it did deserve to be rated better.
Totally underrated
That movie gave me so much anxiety.
i love as above so below i made a tshirt with papillons tag on it lol
No one's talking about the reboot of Suspiria, I was terrified. The whole choreography thing was incredible.
I saw the first VHS in the trilogy when I was 12. Saw one scene, couldnt sleep for a week🤣
THE CHANGELING scared the crap out of me when I was a child
Changeling? The Angelina Jolie film?
The 1980 film starring George C. Scott
I’m surprised that Hostel isn’t on here. That movie is keeping me, along with many many other from traveling to Europe lol
Yeeees. Helo my not European friend. Not anything scary over here. Not at all. Come and see. Europe..
That movie was so disappointing
Just stay away from Europe because it's a huge rip-off!
Wow!! excelent work, i loved your video (specially the crossed references between twitter, instagram, etc). Love from chile😷
Rosemary's Baby is my favorite horror movie of all time actually. So there.
Honestly, when I was about 10-11 years old, I stumbled upon the movie: "Event Horizon" playing on the scifi channel back in the day. Thought it was just a futuristic/matrix like movie. Got into it, and was thoroughly horrified!! Had to literally turn the movie off, and watch some cartoons before I went to bed because I was still a bit fucky... but yeah!
That being said; now a days, at age 28, my opinion on scariest movie would have to be Hereditary. Only movie that has recently messed me up, and afraid to sleep for days. Powerful!
Christ, I saw Event Horizon when I was 17 and it fucked me up, I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to see it as a kid. Great movie, though.
NUMBUR 129 You’ve just officially levelled up to the Event Horizon scare the Bajezus out of your 10 year old ass club. I watched it when I was 13 and nearly had to be sectioned because I was so traumatised by it. And then in tradition I watched it with my 12 year old son (he’s 18 now) and he was traumatised by it. And I have never forgiven myself for such stupidity. But glad you mentioned it.
Yeah I loved Hereditary too.
You are a light weight.
Not an easy question, whatever you pick, not everyone will agree. Some will say its overrated. Its hard to pick one film but for me, it should be something that could actually happen like Black Christmas or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Psychological horror can work at times like the Shining. Hell when I was a kid, I thought the Gate was the scariest film I ever seen, silly to think that but its still a fun movie. People will say the Exorcist even though Friedkin doesn't think its a horror movie, its more of a documentary which makes it realistic or as he would say, its the mystery of faith. Plus there are hidden themes of sexual abuse which I'm sure some of you have seen Rob Ager's analysis. Films like the Shining might not scare you anymore but they have moments that can get under your skin especially with the music like the Room 237 scene from beginning to end and with no jump scare at all. Plus its fun to know people's favorite horror movies or films that scared them, you might get something you wouldn't expect like Creepshow. But lets be honest, its probably the emoji movie.
Jw Nj I'm shocked no one mentioned Friday the 13th, the first one. Thst movie still scares the hell out of me. I'm in my 40's, and a lightweight when it comes to horror movies.
Just the idea of a nice little old lady talking in her son's voice in middle of the night while being in the woods...weird & eerie. A nice reverse of Psycho.
Emma... I've been a horror fan longer than you've been alive and absolutely love your channel! Just joined. :-)
I am new to your channel and really happy that I came across it because I am a horror movie fan. I am also an older person. I saw the exorcist when it came out with my girlfriend (who is now my wife) and our two best friends. I am hoping that my age doesn’t diminish me as a member of your fan group... I am extremely young at heart. I’ve got to say I was very impressed with the list of movies you came up with in your research. It gives me faith in the Awareness and knowledge of these horror enthusiast. These are for the most part high quality films, really the best of the best. The only movie on the list I haven’t seen is the infamous Texas chainsaw massacre. I gravitate more to a movie that is story driven not gory driven. My favorite type of movie is psychological horror. I do think that most of the movies on this list.Fall into that category. I’ve watched a couple of your other videos and I enjoy your presentations quite a bit. I subscribed and gave you the thumbs up. Looking forward to using your videos to find some newer movies to enjoy.
Right, before watching the rest of the video...The scariest for me,when I first watched it back in the 90's was Jacob's Ladder, as it played on a certain fear I have......Great film though...What I think your poll will say is The Exorcist, seen it once, didn't find it all that scary, and won't bother with it again. I agree, horror as a genre is VERY subjective :)
Mikey Bishop Jacob's Ladder is so underrated. "DREAM ON!"
You have to consider when the Exorcist was made. It was the first of its kind. To those who didn’t watch in in that era and have seen many other possession movies BEFORE watching the exorcist...well desensitization sets in and movies of that trope are just not as scary.
Trust me, when it came out, it was absolutely terrifying to everyone who saw it.
@@alexblaze8878 I do not deny the fear fator of the film, it is bloody good, just don;t like the hype it gets....I feel there are far scarier films out ther. Shockingly,Texas did not scare me at all...Though Nightmares In A damaged Brain ..did scare me from the opening shots...
Thanks, your taste in horror is very close to mine, so i feel the content is good.
Though the question asked could also be alongside the question is, what scares you in life,as well as movies.
The Strangers (2008) Is one that rarely gets to top ten,yet i believe deserves it.
Yes. The Strangers is a masterpiece!
"why are you doing this?" ... 'because you were home".
That is why that movie is so effective imo.
love the channel!!
This is a really good video. You explained a lot and didn’t only give your opinion but compiled different lists from different audiences which I haven’t seen before. Great job. I don’t think any movie is scary to the point where that it will make not me go to sleep or have nightmares
scifi horror is what gets me, so ALIEN and THE THING, but -- my personal all-time scariest favorite is
LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH
it is probably considered a cult classic, and there's a lot of love out there on the web for this movie. i used to stay up late as a kid watching old movies, and this is primal fear, very psychological, and based at least in part on a classic tale. www.letsscarejessicatodeath.net/ www.dreadcentral.com/news/176760/hunting-haunting-locations-lets-scare-jessica-death-45-years-later/ and so on...
My guess: The Exorcist. I haven't seen it myself though. Let's see if I'm right.
My personal opinion of the ones I've seen, would be Insidious. I haven't seen it in a couple of years though, but when I saw it back then..... It really freaked me the fuck out.
totally watching this a year later, but love hearing you talk about Texas Chainsaw and Halloween, my two favorite films of all time.
Emma please talk about wolf creek the movies and series sometime... Loving the channel!!
The original "The Haunting", "Night of the Living Dead", and Lucio Fulci's "Zombie".
Hereditary
The conjuring
Rosemary's Baby
Suspiria 2018 was just so disturbing beyond belief
The original 1977 Suspiria was so much better than the remake
When I was eleven years old my cousin and I tried to watch The Exorcist 4 the first time. I only made it to the hypnosis scene and started yelling 2 turn it off. I wasn't able 2 watch the whole movie until I was 16. It seriously messed me up. Love your videos. Keep it up. J
This is my top 10 list:
10: The Shining
9: The Conjuring
8: The Fourth Kind
7: Talk To Me
6: Midsommar
5: Threads
4: Skinamarink
3: Hereditary
2: The Exorcist
1: Come And See
Honestly feel like hereditary is the scariest movie I've ever seen.
I enjoyed it, wasn't scary but it had disturbing moments.
@@jwnj9716 I think I feel about the exorsist the same way you feel about hereditary. :D
@@Spike0000 yeah fuck man. That movie really fucked me up the first time I watched it. Toward the climax of the film I was full on hylerventilating and wanted to scream, like and pass out all at the same time. It really tapped into something primal in me that most horror movies don't. The only thing I didn't like about it was how it ended up being a possession movie with a crazy cult. But that's just because I don't find possession stories scary and I don't really care about satanistic cults. Real human evil and tragedy however? Sign me the fuck up.
I'm not sure if it 'scared' me, but I for sure felt haunted by it.
honestly after watching a LOT of horror films, I think the scariest I've seen is Sinister, it might just be because it was pretty formative for me, and its a little cheap too heavily relying on jumpscares but i recently rewatched it and it holds up as the scariest in my mind
It freaked me out a bit.
Awesome video!!
I may be too old but The Tingler is a 1959 American Horror film with Vincent Price. I had nightmares for weeks, I swear I could hear that thing crawling all over my house. Peace.
„Us“ really left a mark on me, I love this movie so much
Glad you are also a fan!
I was really hoping Hereditary would make it! It's definitely in a league of its own and I do think it's one of the best movies of all time. I honestly believe it belongs among the classics!! It gave me hope for the future - sophisticated horror movies!!!
I know Jaws may seem dated by today's standards, but when I was a kid many men, women, and children of all ages were genuinely terrified to go into the water after seeing the film. No modern horror film has had that effect on people, to my knowledge. I know Psycho made some women afraid of taking a shower, but I can't think of another horror film that has had the impact of Jaws, culturally speaking.
As to the two popular found footage films on this list, they are more boring and unintentionally funny than anything. Rec is one of the few good examples of found footage films out there, but as you said, it's all subjective. Thank you for this video, Emma!
spookyastronauts GOTTA BE FREEESHHH 10/10 astronauting
Commonly known, probably the Exorcist. But I think the Original Texas Chain Saw still really does the job. Some people will say The Shining. But I think it's not that scary. But personally Roman Polanski's The Tenant. Also The Strangers, The Descent. And just to be completely off beat Dagon.
I think it’s gotta be the Guess: The exorcist . Personal choice : the exorcist

Too late for me to get to the polls, I just want to compliment you on the amazing amount of research you did for this
excellent video. Respect
thank you so much for the content you make, you have become one of my favorites to watch. i love your unpopular opinions because for the most part i tend to have the same unpopular opinions lol. you are great!!
I saw The Exorcist as a kid,and I think the older I got,the scarier it got. I can watch just about anything without genuinely being scared, but the idea of possession terrifies me! Having said that,I saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose in the theater, and that freaked me hell out. Jennifer Carpenter is a truly phenomenal actress
Yeah I stay away from possession movies because I know they are 100 percent real life situations where they truly happen. I just don't like that being portrayed as entertainment. It is really bad for those who are possessed.
Halloween ! A suburban dream town becomes a suburban horror ! The Boogieman Michael Myers kills ! and ruins the fantasy with his 🔪 . 😨
You think _Myers_ ‘ruins the fantasy’, wait’ll you see what Rob Zombie does to it! -GAH!
I'm glad I found this channel, it provides me a lot of material that I'd otherwise miss. I skew way older than your demographic being in my 60s, so I definitely am totally surprised by the appearance of The Ring, Blair Witch and Hereditary.
I think because I hated those 3 movies so much, almost immediately, I could never suspend disbelief enough to let any spookiness penetrate. Just eye-rollingly bad in my mind, like The Grudge, with all of those leaving me scratching my head, wondering what happened to Nightmare on Elm Street or even The Omen or Carrie.
I would've guessed the Exorcist, with its body horror, and crazy head-spinning effects, but I felt that it's pretty dated. Also, I might've put The Ritual in placed of Blair Witch and Midsomar in place of Heredity, then crossed it off, because, while interesting, it's not frightening, really, and Wicker Man was a far better movie.
I thought the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was not very scary and not a particularly good movie and I'd say I Spit on Your Grave was better from that era, though, technically not scary, if you're not female, but a very satisfying revenge flick. I haven't seen Martyrs yet, although I finally found it on Tubi so it's in the queue. There were other movies that are better horror movies than all of those, like The Witch, which is more ominous than scary and better ghost stories like The Devil's Backbone or any number of Del Torro movies, which should replace found footage clunkers like Paranormal Activity.
It's a difficult problem, creepiness, ominousness, suspense, acting performances and visuals all play into the enjoyment of the horror genre. I personally would watch ANYTHING with Art The Clown in it, because he's just the epitome of the clown killer trope. But, not particularly scary. I think Halloween was a good balance between ominous, jump scares, and creepiness and it I saw it as a teen, and that and Carrie were probably my first genuinely scary movie theater experiences back in the 70s. The versions of the Exorcist and The Omen were all edited for television in the 70s and I didn't see them in full until the advent of home video late in the 80s.
Anyway, cheers. Great channel, keep refining your craft.
I think that the exorcist is a experience you have to go through without spoilers, by yourself and in the dark. Also, when you are young. I remember when I watched it, and I have been seeing horror movies my whole life. I was so shocked by it, I probably spend a few days thinking about the movie. And that's to me a sign that the movie is good. The atmosphere, the acting, the special effects. Everything in it was so well done, it was horror taken seriously, without trying to follow a formula or trying to do something that is not. The book is pretty good too btw, it explains a lot of stuff that was left out of the movie. I'm not surprised and I'm not mad either with the results, some people may not care about the movie, but if are susceptible to the movie The Exorcist is a experience that is so unique and unforgettable.
The Thing
Hereditary
Exorcist
_____
As for me, The Thing was the only good one from above. But it wasn’t even scary.
My scariest movie was....The Hills Have Eyes remake
Deffo agree with you on Hereditary. That movie just left me feeling so uncomfortable/weird and scared; very beautifully done!
Hereditary was such crap and boring, I love horror, but that put me to sleep almost
Hereditary is my favorite horror movie.
@@Maikeru101 agreed
Hereditary was definitely unnerving and got under my skin. The acting was outrageous!
Ju-On : The Grudge always scared me far more than either rendition of The Ring. It might have been because I saw Ju-On when I was a child and The Ring as a 14 year old though. The one to do it for me in theaters though, has always been the first Insidious. I was not expecting it to be anywhere as near as scary as it was, still only 13 years old, and was just gettin into horror. As a 23 year old, I still find some of the scares in that film to be quite inventive (ex- the alarm system and door scene, baby monitor),
and dig the camerawork. Arthouse horror films intrigue me more than they scare me , but Hereditary definitely gave me the creeps more than any other horror movie in recent memory.
You should try juon the curse 2... much more scarier than any juon franchise. I don't know where to find the movie since it was a TV movie,.. but i think they had it on youtube
Insidious is about astral projection which a lot of people do on purpose, they train for it, in order to get there. the astral realm. it doesn't have to be a horror experience. sleep paralysis is another look into the astral realm that people experience without purpose. it can be the scariest experience in life, for everyone. subconsciously we know that realm does exist, we are there almost every day, between sleeping and being awake for a short period of time when we experience so-called "hypnagogia" which is another word in textbooks for: we don't know what it is, and why, but we have no other explanation than that: these are dreamlike hallucinations, generated by brains that don't have better things to do. (.....) the only true fact is, that they don't even know what hallucinations are, dreams, and who is writing the story of what we experience in dreams or hallucinations, how are they generated, are they even generated or are we only observers? and so on.
the scariest movie to me is actually the Omen. the atmosphere and story jeeb me out and the haunting music still freaks me out if it pops in my head...
In no particular order: The Mist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, All Hallows’ Eve, It Follows, Midsommar, Super Dark Times (Very Thrilling and Dark at least), The VVitch, Hereditary, Creep 1 and 2, Dawn of the dead (remake), Anomalisa (Psychologically distressing), The Shining, and Paranormal Activity (To a Certain degree).
I found Hereditary beautufully made and incredibly well acted. It was truly disturbing, horrifying and emotionally draining. The best cinema experience of that year for me.
black christmas is so underrated ugh
I dunno, many people have mentioned it in this thread and I love it, so...
No worries; Blumhouse is about to…screw its reputation _ALL_ to Hell, probably.
@@bryangarcia5599 I thought everyone was referring to the original 1974 version!
@ixtasis As did I. But seeing as it’s _already_ been remade once before (in 2006), how many young people are possibly going to grow up thinking _that_ was the original? It’s madness, I tell you! _MADNESS!_
I have yet to find a horror movie that truly scares me. Most of them are either beautiful to me or just creepily interesting, but I never remember them after months. ( that's what happens when you watch thriller and horror since a little kid 😅 )
Wow! You included MY top 3! Blair Witch, The Ring and Paranormal Activity!
Hereditary is easily the most horrifying movie for me in awhile, personally. The scene with Charlie having her throat close up is the most tense and anxiety-inducing movie moment I've seen in a long time because it is just something so mundane- no serial killer or ghost, just a peanut allergy. Her head being chopped off was incredibly shocking. But the real horror of the movie, for me, was what was left up to my imagination- the realisation that he drove home with her corpse next to him, the offscreen discovery of her body, etc. Honestly, it made me physically ill.
The Descent is also easily one of the top for me. I saw it as a young teen at a sleepover, and even surrounded by tons of friends, I was genuinely terrified. The claustrophobia alone was enough. It also is the reason I hate driving behind large trucks carrying loads of wood or metals. Really stuck with me even after all those years. I've rewatched it since, and while it is no longer quite as terrifying (still an effectively scary movie though!), I'll never forget how it made me feel during my first viewing.
As for my scariest jumpscare moment, it's hands down that scene from The Ring where it jumps to that dead man's face in...the closet? Honestly I have only seen it once so the details might be incorrect, but I'm sure y'all know which one I'm referring to. I haven't been able to bring myself to rewatch it since.
Super interesting to see this list! I absolutely adore how Blair Witch manages to historically be one of the scariest movies with no jumpscares or gore. The paranoia and confusion alone work perfectly.
Sinister and insidious are amazing though, I think they’re honestly way scarier then the ring
I haven’t seen them but I’ve seen The Ring and it’s honestly probably top 10 least scary horror movies I’ve seen lmao.
Haven’t seen The Ring but I watched Sinister and it was literally so boring & stereotypical to me. I actually laughed at two of the jump scares. The only scary part of it was the score, the score was actually bone-chilling.
watching blair witch alone is the scariest movie experience ever for me. the exorcist is a much better film but doesnt scare me as much. Its funny because throughout the video you talk a lot about the fact that some of those movies scared you when you were younger, but in the case of blair witch its when i re-watched it alone as an adult that i realised just how terrifying it is. On the other hand, halloween, the exorcist, the shining etc. became movie that I thorouly enjoy for their cinematography, music and acting but don't terrify me anymore. On the other hand Hereditary still scares me after so many re-watch, I think it should have been in the list! Thanks for the vid!
"The Shining" is so good - and on the surface is scary... That being said - once you decode it - it flips the tension/mood/feeling and it becomes something else. The movie becomes something else... The sub-story takes dominance... If you know what I'm writing about - then you know - and I won't betray its secrets here. Look for yourself. If you missed it - look deeper. For my #1 - I would choose "Hereditary". There's not many films I find "scary" - but "Hereditary" is disturbing - and thought provoking. I find it to be thickly layered and complicated on a psychological level. From its initial shock moment - the film moves forward at a slow pace - creating an atmosphere of complete hopelessness. As a comparison to "The Exorcist" - it too is a film that creates an increasing dark dread within the viewer - first with the MacNeils in trying to discover what is wrong with Regan - and then with Father Karrass in the loss of his mother - the guilt he feels - and his dealings with the possessed child and standing alone in his belief about the possession. That build-up of hopelessness is somewhat lifted with the arrival of Father Merrin - which is clearly intended as a set-up for the reprieve to ring false a little later in the film. It's in "Hereditary" where the sense of hopelessness - this darkness that's inescapable - never lets up - even for a moment. It is a descending journey with no way out. On a side note - I also quite enjoyed "The VVitch" - but interestingly - it and "Hereditary" have a few common threads. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyway, that's all I have to say.
There's a lot of horror films that I've found scary but my personal favourite is the original The Haunting.
The scariest movie I’ve ever scene that still haunts me to this day is The Orphanage (2007)
I think the thing with “Blair Witch” was you had to see it pre-hype or maybe post-panning.
A fair number of my friends talked about how scary it was just after it came out, and it was a pretty big deal. So I went in expecting it to be petrifying. Instead, I just found it irritating.
Love your channel you earned a new sub. Also, the scariest movie I have seen is nothing really scares me tbh
Thank you so much
