  • I was dissatisfied with what I could find for instructions on how to do this, so I did my best to share, but I am no means a pro OR a youtube instructional video expert. I hope this helps a DIY shmuck like myself and if its not perfect its better than that **** showing you how to do it in 45 seconds only to advertise a cool break. Which also would help. I did this project two years ago but I'll do my best to answer questions if I can!

Thanks for the detail. Very nice finish look rather than vinyl J channel, worth the time and effort. Agree with other post, good to see the next gen of younguns out there doing the trade justice we need more of ya.

That's the window trim I've been looking for. That should be a stock item of varying widths on store shelves. I'd like to see how you treated the header installation. Thanks.

Nicely done. I keep a mock up piece in my truck marked 1,2,3, 4 so as to not get confused which bend goes when ( I only learned this method last year) . Something you may consider is to make a hem edge going into the flashing chase on the window. I find it makes a tighter/ straighter finish

it looks good. the problem is like on most new construction houses they use new construction windows with nail flanges.and the window are cheap so 10 years down the road when they want them replaced its a nightmare.becouse the nail flange is behind the sideing.and now the sideing is old and faded and if you damage the sideing trying to get rhe old window out you cant match it back.in the old days they used windows with brickmold or 1x4 like yours.and j channel.easy to replace windows. been there done that.

Thank you for this video! Excellent! Going to do steel lap siding on my house with integrated j in all my trim!

Glad you stumbled upon it, I don't have any kind of channel worth subscribing to, but this process was hard to discover on my own.

Nicely done bud! This unfortunately seems to be a lost art and almost non existent in the 🇺🇸New England area anyway. The only downside is when one of the helpers puts a ladder against a window or drops something on it after siding and you’re screwed lol. A lot of times I’ll just bend my j channel separately and cap the window after siding with a hem that slips on the j channel. I’ve also seen it using the vinyl j Chanel and just going over that with a “semi hem” by bending it all the way on the break and skipping the last step of closing the hem and the piece goes right over. It’s definitely not as clean but better than exposed j channel imo. Great video keep it up brother 💪

Great video. I can save you from having to make the final cut on the return though. Don’t worry about making the face measurement so precise. If it’s a little bigger than your old trim or nailer it’s ok. Do everything you just did. Except when making your return bend bend it to the exact size that you need. If the face ends up a little bit bigger it’s ok. As long as all pieces have the same size face. Hope this helps and saves you some time on your next job.

Does it matter how housewrap isn’t tucked in anywhere around the window

I'm definitely trusting the aluminum and the caulking to do 100% of the water wicking here. But even if you wrapped the window completely you would probably run into two potential complications. 1 being that the casement would be more difficult to fit and fiddle into place. 2. being that the highest potential for water getting in (near the caulked seems) is where the housewrap would have to end anyways.
