  • In this video I turn Natural Edge Vessel from a root of a Yew tree , It was quite a challenging turn with all the dirt etc that you find in root balls and there was a massive amount of hand sanding involved but Its a stunning piece to look at and full of character .. I finished it with danish oil ..

Andy i am a retired Nurse who did a very very small amount of woodturning in my early 40s and i loved it but it was what most people think when you say woodturning, stair spindles! I have been watching several of your videos and i am truly in awe. You give a whole new meaning to wood turning/carving and it is absolutely beautiful. I have fallen back in love with wood because of you but i am now 70 and know it wouldn't matter what equipment i had i could never dream of producing what you produce. You are a wood artist. Congratulations. You are incredibly talented and i wish i could afford one of your pieces as it would have pride of place in my living room. Keeeep turning!

@@AndyPhillipWoodturning 100% agree. I'm not creative in the slightest and have an odd dislike of earthy tones, but the colours in that wood are unbelievable!
Out of interest, how much, typically, would a piece like that sell for?
PS This isn't a "muh price" type of question. I'm always amazed when I watch genuine craftsmen produce a piece of work and, more so, the amount of time that is put into it. I work in tech and don't even want to think about the amount of money the company I work for would charge for that amount of time D:

I gotta admit, at first I was certain you'd fill it full of epoxy. I'm so glad you didn't. This is excellent. Congratulations!

Came to say the same thing. At roughly 6:30 I was like "Leave it alone. Do not fill it with epoxy!!!" (or resin). So relieved he didn't fill it.

Same thought here. The epoxy treatment cheapens the overall product so much, it looks so trashy in comparison to just the plain wood

The purple colour in Yew is usually a reaction to iron, probably from iron rich soil in this case but its wise to keep an eye out for old nails or bits of barbed wire.

I wonder how old the tree was. I love your tree art, but it reminds me of something sad. I was travelling through Finland years ago and wound up in a town whose name I've forgotten, but was considered a tourist attraction for something that horrified me, and I still don't know why the Finns let this happen. A woman artist (I don't know how many decades ago. I passed through there about 25 yeas ago.) Anyway, this Finnish woman 'artist' had the oldest known tree in Finland chopped down, hollowed out, and turned into a mini chapel! You see the beauty inside trees that are no longer living, and transform them into great works of beauty, honoring their spirit in the process - not destroying them.
