- In this video I turn Natural Edge Vessel from a root of a Yew tree , It was quite a challenging turn with all the dirt etc that you find in root balls and there was a massive amount of hand sanding involved but Its a stunning piece to look at and full of character .. I finished it with danish oil ..

ABSOLUTELY!!
did they need the click bait title though?
This is one of those pieces that can be examined for years, yet the viewer will continue to see new details. Bravo!
i'm always amazed at how the artist can see what's inside the raw piece.
It’s amazing to watch the transformation of a rough tree stump to something beautiful!
I’m ceaselessly amazed at how craftsmen like you are able to visualize a piece of art from within a piece of wood that would otherwise be rotting in the woods somewhere.
For the longest time, I’ve just been using CZcams to watch you and Matt Jordan. Love and admiration from 🇺🇸.
Thankyou
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning Thank YOU! Keep up the good work. 😄
That is awesome 😊
Wonder how old this piece of wood is??? And you have the vision to turn it into the work of ART. LOVE IT thanks for showing us part of the procedure 😅😅😊😊😮
It looks like one of the most satisfying activities second to surfing n fishing
3AM here and I am watching *woodturning* .CZcams algorithm, You've done it again👏👏👏
Me too. Sites pop up on my "suggested" side bar that I would never have found on my own and just love.. Like this one.
1:30 am. And am watching too. 😂
IDK if it's just me but does anyone else find this sort of thing mesmerizing as well as therapeutic?!
I DO AS WELL
I work in the computer industry and this is about the only thing keeping me sane
Therapeutic? It’s bloody terrifying!
I am often watch woodturning vids just before bed. But I've also slept during MRIs and CAT scans too. Some rythmic sounds, even loud ones, make me sleepy.
Yes
This is the first time I've seen someone work with Yew like this. I had no idea it had such color variation. I love how you worked with the nature and shape of the wood and didn't try to fill in the voids. The finished piece is so interesting, so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you very much!
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning 100% agree. I'm not creative in the slightest and have an odd dislike of earthy tones, but the colours in that wood are unbelievable!
Out of interest, how much, typically, would a piece like that sell for?
PS This isn't a "muh price" type of question. I'm always amazed when I watch genuine craftsmen produce a piece of work and, more so, the amount of time that is put into it. I work in tech and don't even want to think about the amount of money the company I work for would charge for that amount of time D:
The wood's natural appearance is visible through the sealant. Looks better that way.
I was surprised by the lilac tones - which just happens to be my favourite colour! 🥰
Wow😮
I remember in shop class in 7th grade, taking to the wood lathe to make a wooden lamp. One of the most rewarding projects I ever had.
Andy i am a retired Nurse who did a very very small amount of woodturning in my early 40s and i loved it but it was what most people think when you say woodturning, stair spindles! I have been watching several of your videos and i am truly in awe. You give a whole new meaning to wood turning/carving and it is absolutely beautiful. I have fallen back in love with wood because of you but i am now 70 and know it wouldn't matter what equipment i had i could never dream of producing what you produce. You are a wood artist. Congratulations. You are incredibly talented and i wish i could afford one of your pieces as it would have pride of place in my living room. Keeeep turning!

Nature reveals her BEAUTY ❤️🙏🏽.....the job of THIS man IS like jewelery , artist 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Exactly, Mother Nature creates so much Beauty, just look.
This might be my favorite piece I’ve ever seen turned. Wow 🤩. Would make an amazing lamp. Like low warm light in a cabin type I’m thinking.
ALL heavily GRAINED wood is BEAUTIFUL !!! ............................ROOTS , BURLS so on and so forth !!! The FINISHED PIECE IS FANTASTIC & OUTSTANDING !!!
I am in AWE of Curly and Birds Eye Maple !!!
CZcams recommended this to me randomly. As a first time viewer with zero experience or real interest in woodworking, this was interesting enough to keep me for the whole thing. Good job.

I see others turn roots but they don't turn out anywhere near that perfect. You have an exceedingly Gracious gift. Beautiful!
Thank you!

That's beautiful ...😳
I cannot say enough just how much I love that piece. The color variations in the wood are so amazing. I'm glad that you didnt use any epoxy or other materials with this piece. The grain is so beautiful on its own
I'm also glad that epoxy didn't touch this one!
4:09 GOOD HOLY GOD THE PURPLES that is incredible. i thought i have seen the best of the best in woodturning already but i mean this has to be the most gorgeous thing ever turned
6:20 ABSOLUTELY NO FREAKIN WAY THIS YEW IS THIS PURPLE
I was stunned by all the colors too ! The purple made me wonder about why so I am.on a mission !. So Beautiful !
Having reduced yews several times and knowing how quickly they can go through chains, I can only tip my hat to your chisel sharpening skills. Beautiful end result, I love how you tailor your approach to each piece, but yew is a special wood and it certainly looked fantastic when you'd finished. Thank you for the upload.
Major missed opportunity to say “Thank YEW for the upload” 🙌🏼
How a person would thumbs down on this video is totally beyond me 🤷🏻♂️. This is meditative and peaceful at minimum.
They’re the ones who tried this and got their fingers caught or those that don’t like flying objects in the rear view mirror🥴🤣
There jeluas of this persons skill
Maybe they are machinists who winced at the hardpoint saw crashing into the unprotected bed at the start!
Maybe they are tree huggers ?. No clue here!
may be they are nature saver
Yew is my favourite wood, the contrast of cherry and birch colours. The purples are rare! And this is exquisite... I am in love 😍
I think this man has every tool ever invented ☺️
There are people, many people, who can look at a tree and marvel at the beauty of nature, but it takes an artist to look beyond the surface and reveal the real wonder that lies beneath and enhance it even more. You, sir, are that artist. This is such a beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing your vision and your skill with everyone.
Thanks 👍
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning : it has a possible use in meditation where the vessel would rotate at a beneficial speed in front of a viewer,,,,,,,the lighting would be critical also...imo

I love how you manage to accentuate the beauty of what Mother Nature already created. It's a work of art!
A relatively unremarkable garden shrub is turned in to an extraordinary piece. Hats off to you!
A real natural beauty converted into a piece of shite modern art
That's a very beautiful piece. I can only imagine how nerve racking it must have been to hollow it out. Amazing work
Thank you!
Oh my gosh‼️ what a SPECTACULAR job‼️ The grain is magnificent!!! A beautiful job well done!!

As a landscaper I have pulled -by hand- 100s of yew stumps over the years(taxus). The part where you drill the heart out..... it felt like that last root finally gave for me. Thank you! Cathartic!
BRAVO, Just great, no stupid talking, very relaxing, great job, 👍👍👍👍👍
Congratulations Mr: Andy. You used to give a new chance for the old woods; They have been born again !
I like the natural wood and the grain movement is unreal. This is one of my favorite pieces.

I know bugger all about turning wood but even I was thinking, ok that looks bloody dangerous.
@@dred8616 hell yeah, and I shuddered a couple of times, damn
@@dred8616 Because it was dangerous. He should have made the root more round before every attaching to the lathe.

When you have raw materials and makes it in a peace of art that is genius in my eyes.

I LOVE watching wood turning videos. Each finished piece is a gorgeous masterpiece.
But I do usually find myself saying, "I wish they'd left just a little more of the wood in there, somehow the full character of that beautiful piece of wood didn't quite make it through.."
For the first time, I did NOT say that.
It is perfection.
❤
Thank you
We all love a little bit more wood left in there

Beautiful piece of art!! Well done!! I'd be proud to have it on display in my home.
Some of the most beautiful bowls I have ever seen have been spalted wood. Stumps that are slightly spalted are just gorgeous! Beautiful work. ❤
Beautiful work, and so relaxing to watch! Thank you for posting
Looking at the finished product is not only pleasing to the eye, but calming. I had to look at it a little longer. So beautiful.😊
Не перестаю удивляться как получаются такие шедевры ❤
The purple colour that comes through was so surprising and beautiful.
Colorblind?
It was amazing - but it was kind of a bummer how much less vibrant it was post-varnishing?
@@billybilly4382 I see purple too.
This is so nice see the transformation, with the skills involved, very very good work!!
The purple colour in Yew is usually a reaction to iron, probably from iron rich soil in this case but its wise to keep an eye out for old nails or bits of barbed wire.
Another absolutely gorgeous sculpture….the colours are so lovely…I like to watch these videos before I go to bed as it counteracts the horrors of the day in 2021.
Thanks .. glad they help 👍

Неожиданное, смелое решение! 😊 Великолепный результат! 👍 Вы - великий Повелитель красивого дерева! ❤️ Здоровья Вам и новых шедевров! 🙏
I gotta admit, at first I was certain you'd fill it full of epoxy. I'm so glad you didn't. This is excellent. Congratulations!
Came to say the same thing. At roughly 6:30 I was like "Leave it alone. Do not fill it with epoxy!!!" (or resin). So relieved he didn't fill it.
Same thought here. The epoxy treatment cheapens the overall product so much, it looks so trashy in comparison to just the plain wood

Same thing i was thinking but thank god he didn’t do that.
Ain't he brave with that lathe lol . : )
The colours make it look like polished rock to me. Amazing how it's come out!

Thank you. I never tire of watching an artist at work and waiting to see what transpires. I think that is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen made. It should be in a museum so that many people can see it and admire how beautiful wood is and how wonderful that there are craftspeople who can use modern machinery to bring out the beauty in the world. Thank you again I shall enjoy watching this video time and again
I can't stop looking at these videos. The hidden treasures in the wood brought out by the artist. AMAZING
Generally, Mr. Phillip, your videos have given me something to aspire to in my own shop. This one just makes me realize that there are skill levels in turning that it is useless for me to aspire to. 99 ways for that to go wrong for every one that resulted in such success, and yet you make it look easy. Absolutely astonishing craftsmanship in this work, and the wood itself came through with stunning colors and texture. World class work.
OMG ~ Stunning.. Thank you for sharing ! !

Oh no you didn't....OH YES YEW DID...lol....Just couldn't resist.... I love how you honored the wood and it's shape(s). In carving out the inside & not shying away from it...showed that you appreciated the wood exactly as it was. Then by sanding the openings so they were smooth all the way around you showed they each had their rightful place in the prominence of the whole. You have a great eye Andy. This is a beautiful piece.

@@AndyPhillipWoodturning :: is the Yew related to the Juniper thus some Cedars.....or is that a stretch ? I’m focusing on the shared ‘purple’ and aroma of all those.
