Hi I played drums on this. Was definitely trying to give the feeling of having a job interview on datura. There are specific sections and a method to the madness, there is nothing about the song that is improvised, there is a specific structure and solidly defined time signatures. Yes there is a meter and tempo!
In the context of the album, you’re not supposed have a solid footing on this song; it’s supposed to sound chaotic and disjointed. but there are parts of the album that are linear and grounding as the whole album is a story and this is just a part of it. Your reaction is appropriate for better or worse, but your analysis on ike using tuplets and odd divisions to create the feel of metric incongruity is correct!
Thanks so much for the insight here. "having a job interview on datura" is such a unique thematic goal. I don't know that I would ever end up thinking that exact thought but I think y'all nailed that aesthetic. "Uneasy delirium" would be a good description for some of this track.
Love you Kim! You're one of my all time favorite drummers and it's so cool to see some insight on your drumming here
Hubardo is really the kind of album that is supposed to be listened as one large song.
Yeah, Toby Driver is the guy behind Kayo Dot (and maudlin of the Well, and his solo material).
As chaotic as this song is it makes more sense in the context of the album, which is a concept album. For years I thought Kayo Dot would never top the towering masterpiece that Choirs of the Eye was, but then they put out Hubardo and it instantly became not just my favorite KD album but one of my favorite albums of this century. It's an incredibly kaleidoscopic album, moving from the most chaotic, aggressive tracks like this to those that are extremely beautiful and serene, many pointing towards the more moody, post-punk/electronic style they'd explore on Coffins on Io. To me, Hubardo really captures the impressive versatility, experimentation, and fearlessness of Kayo Dot, and really cemented them, in my mind, as the closest we've come to having a King Crimson in the 21st Century. Also, as others have said, KD's music is highly composed down to even the most seemingly chaotic details. They do have some improvised pieces/sections, like most all of Gamma Knife, but Hubardo, afaik, was all pre-composed.
I will say that while I usually don't have time to watch the album reviews (I wish I did, but I already stretch my free time to watch these daily song reviews!), I would definitely make it a point to watch an album review of Hubardo!
That's just bonkers! There's so much nuance to the detailed ideas that are in this track that it blows my mind that it's all composed. Not to mention they probably memorize it all for live performances.
Aside from a few sections specifically designed for improvisation, Kayo Dot's music is very tightly composed and specifically executed. This song is pretty mind-bending for that reason alone. This album in its entirety is a spiritual journey, one of their best along with Choirs of the Eye.
Supposedly their music is fully composed, is what I've heard
Kayo Dot and Maudlin of the Well were my first steps getting into more experimental music. Great bands.
Check out all of their albums, they're all good for different reasons imo, but Kayo Dot is the type of band that took a really long time to sink in for me, but once I dedicated the time and energy to it they became one of my favorite bands ever
Holy shit! my fav band from my fav. album...
Naked City's album Torture Garden which is one of John Zorn's projects would definitely fit this week's theme and I assure you this band would even agree 👌
Toby Driver is insane.
It's 4/4 through the whole song.
The album Hubardo really is something else. It captures and disgusts me simultaneously. Eventually the chaos somehow burns into your mind after many spins, so the tracks get followable. Maybe give it a try 😜
you have an outstanding music taste im proud of you
Have a go at Coyote. Beautiful atmosphere and wonderful construct.
That is one of the songs of all time.
Me too
No man, you have to listen to more Maudlin of the Well, Bath and Leaving Your Body map have to be Tobey Drivers best work!
don't tell him what to do
Not really, Kayo Dot is much more sophisticated compositionally. And just generally interesting
Wait until you hear the black stone
For some reason, chaotic and dissonant music appeals to me a lot, especially if it has complexity and depth. It's like an exciting discomfort. So this song to me is a gem of extreme metal. Also, the song Thief from this album is kind of.. confusing but definitely more comprehensible than Floodgate. The beginning sounds like listening between 2 radio stations, it's fantastic.
maybe there is no toby driver
lol
They really gave you this one, huh
Intellectually, I should love this, but I just think it's ok in reality.
Fuck, this is kind of a weird song to return to with Kayo Dot, very understandable they'd fall into the Total Chaos series though lol, would highly recommend returning to something else on Choirs Of The Eye or a track like Don't Touch Dead Animals, many Driver fans might disagree but I think his most sound work is on the first 5 Kayo Dot releases/6 if including Library Loft or Stained Glass, as well as a couple tracks from Maudlin and Tartar Lamb and to me this is the album where sonically and conceptually it started to feel a little uninspired. This is one of their most chaotic songs ever, and in my opinion it definitely doesn't result in one of their strongest songs. Still a fun experiment to return to sometimes, glad they're getting some shine on the channel again
