Completely nailed how I feel about them too. Every time I give them a listen I think “wow that was cool but a 1 listen.” Occasionally I’ll go back to a couple of their older songs on rare occasions because they have such heavy guitar chugs in them that make them fun to listen to.

Where this track ends, it picks up on the same note on the first track of their next album ("red in tooth and claw" on wake/lift). But it's the complete opposite mood; instead of the pummeling despair of au pays natal, you're in for twelve minutes of insanely positive energy and vibes, bright and euphoric. I still doubt it's your thing, but I think it's a pretty cool flip of sound.

I have a ton of the reaction/analysis to watch, but I'm so happy by how much Moon Over Paris floored you! That song is by far my favourite on the album. This is probably my favourite discovery through album club and I'm extremely grateful to Per for picking it. That song in particular has such a strong personality, a life of its own. The lyrics have a ton of great imagery, and one of my favourite lines ever: "when the Moon is over Paris, we all feel the same: love-drunk poets on the starlit rain". It's such a beautifully written song. I think the 90s rock style you're thinking of is some indie/grunge overlap, it feels closer to some more texture-focused band (without getting into shoegaze territory). Maybe some Built to Spill style of indie.

I loved FF games as a kid, particularly the score. I would sit in pause screens sometimes just to listen to the music. Uematsu is responsible for me growing to love progressive metal music and instrumentation in general. He's created some amazing pieces throughout his career. Like someone else said, the Advent Children version is quite good and an unexpected evolution to an already great track.

The FFVII Advent Children version of this song is seriously worth a listen as well Bryan. It's amazing how Uematsu was able to elevate this song with real instruments and a more rock/metal style.

I loved Uematsu's compositions. It was so different to anything that I knew back then.

In terms of style they are somewhere near the mesh point between King Crimson and Henry Cow.

If you want to check out another song by Nobuo Uematsu, I and a lot of other people feel his true best song is Dancing Mad, the final boss theme from Final Fantasy VI on the SNES. It kind of pioneered epic compositions of this length (It's 4 distinct themes that go from baroque organ to prog rock and 18 minutes long in its original form) and complexity in video game music. e: ironically enough the 4th section of this song actually bears a strong resemblance to some Emerson Lake and Palmer tunes, if you want to tie it into that video you did last week

Even better, this possibly was a game that would have been on the Nintendo Playstation (Super NES CD-ROM), a discbased addon made by Sony for Nintendo. But they had a fallout very late in production (there is actually a protoype floating around) and Sony decided to go in the console market instead. Final Fantasy VI was on SNES but I guess Sony convinced Squaresoft to publish this for their console because of the disc (it might already had been in production for a discbased system). This game released in 1997, the PS1 in 1994 (JP)/1995 (in the West). SNES released in 1990 (JP), 1991 (US), 1992 (EU). Zelda LTTP was a 1991 game (JP). PS1 could play full audio CD's and some versions had a really good soundchip/DAC to the point that some people bought them to play their audio CD's, but I don't know how they were compressed for their games.

If you want more horse artists, I suggest Replacer, who does a lot of Midcentury inspired content, and Radiarc, who is into the epic contemporary composer stuff. These two and Vylet are some of my most favorite pony artists. I mean, the whole pony thing really was more about giving creatives a chance- we gave this little girl cartoon a chance, so we could give each other a look and listen, too. This mindset has really paid dividends with the music scene, because that support for over a decade helped a lot of people blossom.

The SID chip was actually unfinished, The guys designing it had run out of time, as the C64 was went into production.

You must listen to the entire album in one sitting (not long) . Maybe buy the album or CD I order to hear the songs melt into each other without an ad or whatever.

unpopular opinion : ff7 isn't even in the top 3 of final fantasy for me, now having said that the music is definitely not the reason for that, great track, first one in the series to feature vocals, you could do a month of pure final fantasy songs and not run out of absolute bangers

You may find Rhys Chatham a more approachable composer working within the same kind of aesthetic. I think Branca and he worked together in the early days and he is far less abrasive in his approach.

I used to watch others play this game and this song would get stuck in my head more than any other video game song for some reason. And I always thought it was pretty cool. Edit: lacking cohesion, It all makes sense that I would be drawn to it😆 Thanks Bryan. 😁 This is one of the many reasons I love your channel. You explain music in a way that I cannot and it helps me understand why I like what I do.

Symphony No.3 is wonderful.

Pretty great album. Over a decade ago now I was a sales manager, and a few of my reps at a time would ride in my car. This was one of my favorite pump-up albums to play before “grind time”. Needless to say, it was out of most of their elements at first but it was effective and they acclimated like you described haha. Good stuff.

Well I was looking forward to listening to this, since you mentioned their comparable with Legs on Wheels... I hear that now, to an extent, but this is just total chaotic invention and insanity, which is so entertaining it's hilarious and enjoyable. I'm absolutely going to deep dive into them, as this was a blast!

The reason there's such a difference in tone between the first and second parts is that the first part is played while we are shown what happened to the world and the characters and how they're celebrating the victory while the second part is played while the credits roll and the camera slowly pans across a silhouetted mountainous landscape.

The beginning and ending themes of Super Metroid may be the most memorable for me

I only made it to your analysis of ring 7 yet, so you may address this further into the video. But regarding the lyrics not being reflected in the music - I absolutely see what you mean but it has never bothered me. The way I have always interpreted this album is that it's a collection of "theme songs" or "anthems" for the different rings in this authoritarian society. The lyrics subtly underline the actual feelings of the people living there, but they're either scared of repercussions or desperately trying to convince themselves that everything is okay. It's a propaganda piece. But then the interesting thing is also that as you get closer and closer to the center, I feel like the songs get more honest and music aligns more to the tone of the lyrics. The people in power have the freedom to not self-edit. Just my interpretation, figured it was worth throwing out. Super cool analysis, gonna enjoy the rest now!

When I was a kid this was the first game I played on the SNES from the regular NES and the music blew my mind. Huge jump in quality from the 8 bit. This is probably the game I put the most time in, to the point I have done emulator randomizer for Link to the Past as an adult. Thanks Bryan. The 2nd part is the end credits.

Great to see you touch on gaming composers Bryan! Koji Kondo is potentially the greatest of all video gaming composers, an absolute legend. So many iconic songs and themes that have left memories for generations.

As always you have an interesting reaction to this band haha I will say this was an odd choice being that its just a jam really and not a progression at all from you've heard previously. Southbound Pachyderm is the one that shows real growth and I think you wouldve liked that one a lot more

There are a lot of really great melo death bands but DT has to be one of the most consistently great bands in the genre. Even their more experimental music is fantastic.
