- A Subscriber requested a video on how the shift / throttle linkage are connected on the engine side of a 1980’s 35 Hp Mercury. All I have at this time is a 1973 40 hp Model 402 Mercury but it should be similar.

My Mercury 402 came as part of a project boat. I'm trying to get the parts all accounted for before I mess with it.
This video helps a lot. Thanks for posting.
Very helpful for me and my 1974 65hp Merc motor. I had no idea how to disconnect my shifting cables, and probably would have broken something in the process! Thank you, Thank very much! Much Appreciated. God Bless!
Thank you for this video. It's the most helpful I've seen all day.
Thank you for your kind remarks.
Gotta say it did kinda help me out but I have a 71 800 and the linkage is almost the same but different in botls so it helped me out somewhat gave me the infor I needed so thanks
Thanks Richard, that was very helpful. A very similar set up to my 86/87 Mercury. What I'm missing is the small connecting bracket for throttle cable so that will be easy enough to fix.
I’m glad the video was helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for your video. I found it very informative. I'm working on my '85 35hp Mercury and the tiller shifter is stuck in Neutral and the motor is in Forward (starts and runs, but stuck in Forward) after I removed the lower unit and replaced the impeller. I messed something up, needed to know how these mechanisms worked.
similar problem here. I removed the gearbox and reset it to neutral but the shifter is still very difficult to move. How did you free yours?
Thanks Richard, This was very helpful.
My favorite video. ❤
Thank you!
I have a 40hp 2 stroke mercury 400 not too sure on the year. It has the similar type of cables and levers.
This is a nice overview of the shift/throttle mechanism for the Merc 402, thanks. I'm working on the adjustments for the exact model you showed here (a 1972 merc 402), but my cable seems to have too short of a range to be able to push the shifter all the way into reverse (forward and neutral work fine). Do you have any thoughts on how I could go about fixing my issue? As far as I can tell, the only adjustment on the cable is the position of the brass pin on the threaded rod, but I'm already at the limit on that adjustment.
I’m not positive about this but you might have some adjustments inside the control box. If you disconnect the cable are you able to move the shifter into reverse? If not then you need to look at your shift linkage or your shift cam in the gearcase.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Thanks for the advice. There were no adjustments in the control box, but figured out the solution - I'll outline it in case anyone else is looking to solve the same problem. The key was to put both the controller and the lower unit in reverse BEFORE installing the lower unit (I had been trying to install it with both in neutral), that way the shift shaft is aligned to reach reverse based on the controller position, not the other way around.
@@wrerwin1 question. I have a similar Mercury motor. Pushing the controller forward is reverse and pulling the controller towards the rear of the boat is Forward Correct?
That's super helpful. It's hard to tell witch way is forward and reverse on the shift cable. I tried to repair my control box witch had the busted tooth on the face cam. I replaced it with a shift cam and gave cam that use the roller. And now forward and reverse are backwards. Sometimes the lever gets suck when I put it in forward. If you know anything about these various differences in the internal cams and cables could you post a link or make a video in your reply.
I’ll do my best to post a video of that once I have a chance. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble
I have this same more could u do a vid or do u have a vid on adjusting the reverse lock? When I go into reverse if I give to much throttle the motor lifts out of the water
Scooter0241… Sorry I don’t have a video on that specific area at this time. I will work on it though. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Helped me out Would have helped more if you actually took it apart and put it back together.
if you still have this motor could you do a video on how it works i just got my first boat and no nothing about this motor but i’m trying to get it going! thank you
Lazy_gamer_plays … I have several videos linked in the description of this video… czcams.com/video/Pexk09CXDek/video.html
I hope this helps.
Have a 1969 200 20hp Mercury. Standard setup of manual Left side Trans tougle. Right side Tiller Handle. Switching to a remote console, using a MerControl system ( gen-1 ) cables. I need the clip which is used to hold the cables adjustment barrel in place to the motor housing. HELP.
I think what you are looking for may be on eBay as part number 87609A1 but it’s for a 40 hp Model 402. I’m not sure if they make one for your motor. You can try www.marineengine.com
I have a 1974 115 horse mercury outboard. I broke the nylon cable lever holder for the brass part of the cable shifters. I can not find a part to replace it. Do you know of any one who would have this kind of part to sell?
Rick … you could try www.marineengine.com or eBay once you get the part number. You could also try a Facebook group called Vintage Mercury Outboard Fanatics. Someone may have the part your looking for. Good Luck!
What dos the shifter conect to on other side of that silver thing?
The shift cable attaches to what is called the actuating slide that moves the shift lever that rotates the shift rod in the lower unit.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I figured out what I was talking about it attachs to the reverse on the engine the one side of that arm in the engine I am working on is broken so no reverse would cost the guy more money to fix then the hole boat is worth
Hello!! I just bought the 40HP same line engine. I m in Greece
. The Mercury agent in our country told me though that I cannot find most basic spare parts. Do you have any idea where I can ask for spare parts? Thanks . Elias
I would go on www.marineengine.com and find the part you need then cross reference that part number on EBay. I don’t believe marineengine ships overseas.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Thank you very much!!!
First of all, thanks for the video. I'm a first-time boat owner with very little boat motor knowledge. But I was wondering if you could help me out on naming a couple of parts that I am missing. at 1:30, the piece that holds the top cable secured with the Phillps head. what is that called? and at 2:55, the part that hold the barrels in place. I'm having a difficult time finding these 2 parts. any help will be much appreciated.
Or anyone in the comments who has any knowledge please let me know.
Luis Esparaza …. There is a “Lever Kit” part number 87609A1 on EBay for $52.00
You can search part numbers and part diagrams by hp on www.marineengine.com also I think you are referring to the “Latch Shift Actuating Slide (Shift Cable) part number 56193 also found on eBay for about $15.00 you can find a parts diagram under the heading “Shift Control Linkage” for the Model 402 at www.marineengine.com
I hope this helps.
Sadly this company DOESN'T ship OUTSIDE of the USA! They have the part I need but won't ship out of the USA. 😢
My 40 Mercury 1982 has same gear change and throttle mechanism. I'm having difficulty setting up the cables. Is it possible to change gear with one cable or do I need the second cable attached to the throttle in order for the gear change cable to operate? Thanks
You can shift the motor without the throttle cable attached.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Thanks for your quick reply. My problem is that the shifter is very difficult to move up and down the guide rail. There is something here I don't understand. Any advice much appreciated.
Is the shifter hard to move even when the cable is dissconnected? If so try rotating the prop or flywheel slowly by hand while shifting. This might help. The shift rail might just need cleaned and lubricated. If this does not work you may need to take a look at the shift cam inside the lower unit.
Y, the shifter is difficult to move without the control cable. Thanks to your video I removed the lower unit and was able to turn the gearbox to neutral. I had started the outboard a few times before I realised it was in gear. I cleaned the rail and put copious oil along it hoping to let it glide but no luck. TIA of any advice
Does it have tilt trim? Also can you move the shifter inside the lower cowling when the lower unit is removed?
VERY INFORMATIVE BUT YOU NEED A TRIPOD....WAY TO MUCH CAMERA MOVEMENT. I SUBED ANYWAY
Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion. Mine broke so I need to buy a new one. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.
