  • I said part 6 was the last video on this 40 hp Model 402 Mercury but I guess I lied. I decided to clean the carb to make sure this motor runs when the new owner takes it off my hands.
I enjoyed the journey bring her back from the brink but now it’s time to say goodbye to this old girl.
She can still run like a beast with this new carb clean.
Thanks for watching, sharing and subscribing!

I’ve been working on the very same engine model today. Wiring was completely toast just like yours but we managed to solder new wires onto the stator and wiring harness. A successful job resulting in good spark, much thanks to your part one of this Mercury series. Now the engine still won’t fire unless we poor gas into the spark plug holes. Must be some kind of fuel issue is my conclusion. Will try to clean the carb and hope it’ll run after that

Thanks for watching and commenting. Make sure your fuel pump is working too. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing. I'm contemplating buying a 16' boat with a mercury 402 that's running and figured I'd check info on the motor itself to see what I may be getting myself into... I may luck out and be able to recoat the stator wires to buy a few more years... Looks like I'm buying the boat! Thanks again for the information. ~Soon to be of the 402 club... =)

bullyyakker… Sounds great. Yea the Stator is still available but it’s expensive. You could always try eBay. Good luck if the compression is good then it should last another 40 yrs or more. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Just discovered your videos, thank you! I’m trying to bring back 1972 merc 402, I did same thing you did with flywheel, I marked mine tho and reinstalled based on that, I replaced stator and still no spark, new wire harness and coils…trigger tests borderline low side ohms…I’m thinking to replace switch box next, I’m at a loss….grounds on coil are correct. Any thoughts?
Thank you for videos, very helpful!

Rick Clark … I would check the ignition system. Here is a Video for checking the Stator, Trigger and switchbox for a different Mercury but very similar procedure. czcams.com/video/IxOAgMUnrFI/video.html
If the flywheel is not on correctly you will lose spark. I hope the video helps.

Do you have any wiring information on a 1979 Mercury 40 2 stroke, I just replaced the wiring harness, and now it idle up and just dies. I think I have a bad switch box, due to installation guides not being very clear and accidentally hooked up a 12v dc wire to a switch box with a stator.

Skunk Productions… I would suggest you purchase a Solec Service Manual. The manual will have wiring diagrams. I do have a video for a 1985 45 hp that troubleshoots a bad switchbox that might help you with your 40 horse or at least point you in the right direction. czcams.com/video/IxOAgMUnrFI/video.html

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair thank you I will definitely go check it out, do you know the damage that could happen when you do hook a 12v dc wire to the switch box with a stator? Does it damage both units or just the switch box or more? Thank you

@@Gramskee It most likely just affected the switchbox. The video I posted will show you how to verify the Stator and trigger condition. Good luck with your motor.

awesome, i've got one of these with all wiring toasted and some connections not connected, i watched all 7 of these videos and I still couldn't work out where everything goes, is there some sort of diagram or manual?

Yes you can purchase a Seloc Service Manual at www.marineengine.com or used on Ebay. It will provide wiring diagrams. If you slow down my video it may be easier to see more detail. Thanks for watching and commenting.
