- I can’t believe I finally got Spark on this Mercury 402. I was about to give up when I noticed the problem was so obvious it was right under my nose. I’m so glad I’m getting closer to getting her running.

I have the same motor but all of the wiring is crumbling. On top of that the previous owner has messed around with the wiring since there's electrical tape everywhere! Did you make your inside engine wiring harness from scratch or did you buy a replacement? I'm thinking that anything that was pulled off another motor is probably going to be in the same shape as the one I have. Another idea I had was to buy a more modern 8 pin wiring harness and just set up the wiring to mimic what the 7 pin had. Thoughts?
@watherwatchmen7785… I replace the entire wiring harness with automotive wiring all the way up to the plug and spliced in.
I have a question about the orange wiring box, what is it called? And where do you order your parts from? Have had this boat motor for 2 years and can’t find parts
@Hartsaffiliate ...If the box your referring to is the one on the top left of the motor...it's called the switch- box. You can purchase one at www.marineengine.com . I also have one that came off of a working 1973 Model 402 . Let me know if your interested in buying it.
The flywheel doesn’t have a keyway?
Yes it has a keyway.
Hey there,
I have the same engine that barely starts. it ran 3 times on starter fluid for about 5~10 seconds
I have spark but i'm stuck at the timing. (lot's of different info online)
there is a line on the side of the flywheel and a stamped mark on top of the flywheel (wich could be just a random dent)
also there a plastic "arrow" thingy at the right side of the engine (looking AT the carb)
I can't get the marks to quite line up at 0 throttle with my light so im thinking the timing is off
i think you stated at some video the timing should be set looking trough the pullstart but i dont have one.
Do you have any documents for this engine?
Greetings from the Netherlands!
The 402 Model I worked on only had two markings ( I & : ) on the outer circumference of the flywheel. There were no markings for degrees. From what I have read the timing is set by the factory and should never be adjusted. I pulled the flywheel off incorrectly (not using a puller) and removed all the top bolts holding it on. Luckily I was able to get it back on the way it came off and didn’t upset the timing. I wish I could give you more information but that’s all I have on this model.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair how did you know you had the flywheel right ? you just regained spark or did the engine began to "sputter"?
@@supersolex I knew it was on right because after regaining spark (once I found the problem with the wiring to the coils) it ran without issue and the timing marks were at the proper position on the pointer attached to the pull starter.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair Thank you for your answer! do you know where the timing pointer is? i have some plastic pointer at the right side of the carb (looking at the carb)
Greetings
@@supersolex I’m not sure about yours but my pointer was a boxed window connected to the pull starter. When I used a timing light I could see the markings through the window and I think it was 28° after top dead center. And the only way I could tell that what is the position inside the window just passed the pointer with the timing light.
