Thank you so much for putting this all together. It has been immensely helpful so far and I will no doubt watch it over and over as many times as possible as there is so much density to unpack here.
For the commenters who are making a big deal over pricing….she likely will barely break even. This is Lynn Hill….she has an immense wealth of knowledge. She is making sure it gets out there. Ya’ll need to show some respect and be thankful she has done this at all. She could just let her secrets die with her.
She is a climber, and a damn good one, attempting to grace you with her knowledge….she is not a content creator, a PR person, a production crew, an expert in how to do any of this, etc…she is a climber, this is what she knows. Give her some grace as she learns this aspect of her lifelong career….she is giving you the key information you need to succeed at climbing.
I gotta say, I love the video clips of Shawn and Brooke. It's crazy seeing that and then seeing both of them now, including Shawn working on Burden of Dreams.

Rented and watched full video. I (climbing 30 years) and my partner (climbing 2 years), loved it on so many levels it is so worth $60. FIRST, its a one year long rental. SECOND, it is an exact breakdown of how climbing works. The way the graphics are used and the way the program is organized is very thoughtfully crafted. Imagine if you spent 100s of hours watching utube videos about top 10 things to do climbing and thought I just wish someone would would actually explain why it all works, when to use the techniques and lastly, why do I fall. Lynn Hill is doing that. My suggestion is Step 1, "rent" the video and watch it! As an experienced climber, learn better ways to teach and help newbies and be more mindful yourself. For new climbers, learn the whys and hows of climbing in one place. Step 2, Go climb and video tape yourself. Step 3, Watch your video and Lynn Hills full video and see what you can do better and compare and diagnose what went well and what went wrong. Repeat steps, 2 and 3. Thanks Lynn Hill. The community has needed this for sure.

I remember watching Ron Kauk, climbing Midnight Lightning in an old VHS called Painted Spiders and thinking “that looks really hard”. Then I saw Lynn climbing the same boulder like it was 5.10 . That’s when I knew her technique was something else.
By the way, I was born in Lake Garda and seeing Lynn climbing on the overhangs of Massone brought back memories!

This is really a joy to watch. I have to say that I've witnessed MANY high-level climbers explaining things poorly because they didn't really understand the subtleties of their technique. For this reason, I've always told my students to watch WOMEN who climb well - they're much more likely to prioritize technique over brute strength than some musclebound giant. I'm certain that this series will bear that out!

I just got finished watching the full movie which has become in my opinion the best compendium of climbing knowledge ever put in video format, at least to my knowledge. This clip is already amazing! Super dense with information which is so clearly presented that it almost feels obvious, yet is so subtly profound.
Given this, however, I think I would need to watch the full program many many times over years. Thus, (similar to others in the comments) I'm pretty surprised to see that you pay a premium price to *rent* the video. I understand this project was a monumental effort, and I deeply want you and your colleagues to receive proper compensation for it (and I don't even feel that $60 is a crazy proposition). But, I'm very much put off by the idea of renting it, and I struggle to see the benefit of a rental-only model for a video targeted to ordinary consumers. Would you consider adding a "permanent purchase" option, or giving a transparent comment on why the video is being distributed in this way?

I agree with other comments - I think the pricing/revenue model needs to be refined. $60 is a major purchase for video instruction, and when it's a rental that times out (and is only part 1 in a multi-part series), lots of folks may get cold feet.
Thanks for your feedback. I would allow people to to watch the video indefinitely, however, Vimeo only offers rental for a maximum of one year. If I allowed people to own the video download it onto their computer, I would not longer have control over my product. It's easy to post other people's video and share it to the world, which wouldn't be fair to me. Do you think it's fair for me to work for 14 years and pay a LOT of money and not even be able to cover the cost of this production?

Business is just like climbing, in the sense that the brute force approach is often less effective than using a bit of finesse.
I think in this instance, what you're after (if I'm understanding correctly) is:
- Not allowing the video to be copied/distributed without revenue coming to you
- Achieving a sustainable amount of revenue to allow you to keep making these great videos.
Both are valid goals, but can be achieved in a variety of ways.
You can chop up the videos into smaller instructional segments, highlighting the individual skills. Check out the channel Movement for Climbers for a good example of this - he's got 180k subscribes now and is likely making good money from the videos. He's also not a legendary name in climbing like you are, so I'm sure a consistent CZcams effort could get you to hundreds of thousands of fans quickly, which would keep revenue coming.
You can also create a Patreon account, and encourage your supporters to help fund future videos as you release them.
You can make merchandise for Lynn Hill fans to purchase. I know I'd buy some for my girlfriend who climbs also.
My point here is, you can turn a difficult to hold sloper into a great hold with just a bit better body position, and that's what you're encountering here.
I've operated businesses of non-trivial gross revenues throughout my life, and would *love* to help you brainstorm and strategize via email if you happen to be interested.
I'm just a huge fan, have a deep respect for you and your career, and would love to see you do well.
Either way, I wish you the best of luck with this project, am already subscribed, and will be following along!
Thank you for the detailed response and suggestions! I'm a one person business, so it has been challenging to make so many decisions on all aspects of the business! I did think of breaking the concepts into smaller chunks, which could ultimately bring in more revenue, but I decided to let each person regulate how much information they could process at their own pace and allow access to the entire body of work. If you have any ideas about how to make this content available indefinitely with a one-time purchase, (without compromising the security of my content) I would be very interested in your suggestions.
I did look at Patreon as a potential option, but since I wanted to start with this video as a foundational body of work, it didn't seem like a good fit. Perhaps it could be a potential in future video content.
As for your suggestion to offer some products on my website, I do currently sell T-shirts, tank tops, and signed photos, which has helped support some of the cost of these video productions. I also do speaking engagements across the US and in various places abroad.
Thanks for sharing the Climbing Movement website! Their videos are interesting and informative! They could use some of the motion graphics concepts that I've created to enhance their teaching points! For me to offer a similar service, I would likely need to hire someone to help me. In any case, I will keep moving upward and hopefully make less mistakes as I evolve in the process. In the meantime, I wish you many fun experiences on the rock!

Hi Gordon! I know you are used to getting content for free, but this project is special and has cost me a lot more money and time than you could ever imagine. I have no problem letting people have access to this video indefinitely, however, I wasn't sure if owning this video would create a security issue. It's a know fact that if creative content can be owned, it is at risk for being given away for free. I hope to continue to create more content that's affordable in the future, but I will not be able to do so if people are not willing to support my efforts.
@@LynnHillClimbing I get it. I'm just not a fan of the model, nor am I convinced it leads to higher revenue, and I doubt it will curb illegal redistribution. I think Gabe Newell proved that convince of accessibility to the end user is the real answer. But you get to decide your strategy as the content creator. I get that $60 can be hard for some to come up with. At minimum wage, it would take 5 hours or so to earn money to rent it. I can say for some of us older people, the chance to watch an analysis of climbing by Lynn Hill is well worth it. I also get that pricing it was probably very difficult, and the decision to not make it a purchase was likely due to fear of theft and out of control free sharing. I would suggest finding a couple of close friends to share a couch with and watch together and take notes for as long as you have the rental. Perhaps later, once they make up for production costs, they will reevaluate and discover more secure technological options for purchasing.
Just so you know,, I did not delete your previous comment. I just now noticed your comment that this video is too expensive. I've spent a LOT of my own money over the past 14 years producing this video. What we are willing to pay for a product or service seems to be a subject matter. In any case, good luck with your climbing! I'm happy that you could enjoy at least the introduction to this video for free.
Maybe that’s what’s wrong with our economic system. The small guy can’t get paid for their work but giant corporations make billions off the little guy creating “free content”. Or a wealthy person might spends thousands of dollars to spend time around a celebrity while you won’t spend $60 to get all the knowledge about climbing from the sport’s female GOAT!
@@LynnHillClimbing it's not that it's too expensive. i'd buy a hard copy (or the rights to watch it for the next 50 years) of it for 60 usd, but as a rental it's just weird. what if i want to show a scene to a friend in 1.5 years from now because i thought i'd be relevant for them? or i want to check something out for myself because i forgot a detail? then i cant. it's just so impractical. that's independent of the price for the video.
people sell very detailed guide books for less and they dont come to my door after a year because they want it back.
